HP 62 versus HP 62XL: which black cartridge should you buy?
Choose standard HP 62 Black when your volume is modest

It is sensible when you print occasionally, want the standard capacity, or are replacing the same cartridge already installed in the printer. Choose HP 62XL Black for heavier black printing

The HP listing cited for the ENVY 7645 establishes the 62XL option for black ink. It does not establish an XL tri-color cartridge for this model. For color replacement, use the HP 62 Tri-color listing that HP identifies for the ENVY 7640/7643/7644/7645 family.

Photos and pages with heavy coverage
Expect lower real-world page counts than an average-yield figure when pages contain large photographs, dark backgrounds or full-page graphics. How to replace an ENVY 7645 cartridge

- Turn the printer on. Leave it powered so the carriage can move to the replacement position.
- Open the cartridge-access door. Wait until the carriage stops moving. Do not force it while it is traveling.

- Prepare the new cartridge. Remove it from its package and take off the protective tape or shipping cover without touching the electrical contacts or ink nozzles.
- Install the replacement in the matching slot. Seat the black cartridge in the black position and the tri-color cartridge in the color position. Press until it is fully latched.
- Close the access door. Allow the printer to recognize the cartridge. If an alignment page or confirmation appears, complete it before starting an important print job.
- Print a test page. Check black density and color blocks. Keep the alignment or maintenance result if you need to troubleshoot later.
Do not remove a new cartridge’s protective seal until you are ready to install it. Leaving an opened cartridge exposed can allow the nozzles to dry or collect dust.
Fixes for common ink problems
The printer says the cartridge is incompatible
- Recheck that the cartridge number is the one listed for ENVY 7645 in your country.
- Confirm that you did not buy a cartridge for a similarly named ENVY model or another regional market.
- Remove and reseat the cartridge, making sure the protective strip has been removed and the latch is closed.
- Restart the printer only after the cartridge is seated. If the warning remains, use the seller’s return process rather than forcing the cartridge into the slot.
Prints are streaked or a color is missing
- Verify that the affected cartridge is installed and recognized.

The cartridge appears to empty quickly
- Compare your pages with the type of coverage used for HP’s approximate yield estimate. Full-page graphics consume substantially more ink than light text.
- Check whether the printer is performing repeated cleaning cycles, which use ink without producing a finished page.
- Use the correct paper setting and print mode for the job; an inappropriate setting can increase ink use or reduce apparent density.
- Do not treat the 600-page figure as a guaranteed count. HP explicitly qualifies it as approximate and dependent on content and other factors.
Text looks faint after replacing black ink
Confirm that the replacement is the black cartridge, not the tri-color unit, and that it is fully latched. Print a quality pattern, then run alignment or cleaning once if the printer recommends it. If the pattern is still incomplete, the cartridge may be defective or the printer may need service; repeated cleaning is unlikely to solve a seating or hardware problem.
