Yes—an attacker with the required access could force older Windows components onto a system and potentially restore vulnerabilities that had already been fixed. The August 2024 reports described two distinct vulnerabilities, with different privilege requirements. They do not establish which Windows builds are vulnerable or the complete fix status today.
What “unpatching” means
In August 2024, SafeBreach researcher Alon Leviev disclosed downgrade techniques that manipulated the Windows update process to replace critical system components with older versions. If an older component contains a flaw that a later version fixed, restoring it can bring that vulnerability back.
Contemporary reporting said Windows Update could still show a system as up to date after components had been downgraded. That describes the reported research at the time; it is not evidence that every Windows installation, or Windows Update today, behaves this way. The reports also described potential bypasses of Virtualization-based Security (VBS), a Windows security feature.
BleepingComputer said the disclosure covered Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server systems. That is the scope reported at disclosure, not a verified list of affected builds or currently supported releases.

These are elevation-of-privilege issues, not evidence of a universal one-click internet attack against any fully updated Windows PC. The privilege prerequisites matter: the advisory described basic-user access for CVE-2024-38202 and administrator access for CVE-2024-21302. The available reports do not establish how often the techniques were used or how many systems were affected.
How to check whether Windows Update fixed your PC
The August 2024 coverage cannot establish today’s remediation status for your Windows version. In particular, the available material does not settle the current fix status for CVE-2024-38202. Use Microsoft’s live security guidance and the update history on the affected device rather than relying on an old report or assuming that “up to date” alone answers the CVE-specific question.

- Find the Windows version and build on the device: open Settings > System > About, then note the Windows edition, version, and OS build.
- Check updates installed on that device: open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the latest update details.
- Search the Microsoft Security Update Guide for CVE-2024-38202 and CVE-2024-21302. Use Microsoft’s current guidance for the relevant Windows version to determine whether an update applies and whether further action is specified.
- If the advisory or your organization’s support team gives a specific update instruction, follow that guidance for the identified Windows version. Do not manually replace system files, roll back components, or disable VBS based solely on the 2024 reports.
Microsoft’s live advisory and the updates installed on the affected Windows version are the authorities for remediation; the August 2024 reports describe the disclosure and then-known fixes, not the complete patch status in October 2026.

MyCERT’s advisory dated 10 August 2024 describes the impact and privilege requirements for both CVEs. BleepingComputer reported on 7 August 2024 that Microsoft had issued an update for CVE-2024-21302, and on 27 August 2024 covered the release of the Windows Downdate tool and the reported behavior in which a downgraded system appeared up to date. Those dates are useful historical context, not a substitute for checking current, version-specific Microsoft guidance.

The available Microsoft Security Update Guide result did not provide usable CVE-specific remediation details. Consequently, it would be misleading to name a current affected-build list, prescribe a particular KB update, or claim that every PC is now protected on the strength of these reports alone.
