The safest way to watch One Piece is to follow the original TV anime by episode number, not by the “season” labels shown by Netflix, Crunchyroll, or another streaming service. Those labels differ between platforms and can split one story arc into several packages.

Start at Episode 1 and continue in numerical order. The movies, recap specials, live-action series, and upcoming remake are optional and should be treated as separate viewing tracks.

The correct One Piece anime order

Use the saga and arc names below to check that your streaming service has placed episodes correctly. The gaps inside some ranges are usually filler, crossover, or special episodes; they are not missing main-story episodes.

A practical first-time viewing plan

  1. Watch Episodes 1–53.
  2. Continue through Episode 130. The first two movies can be watched after Episode 53, but they are optional.
  3. Continue through Episode 516. The early recap films and side-story films can be added after their corresponding material if you want them.
  4. After Episode 516, optionally watch 3D2Y, then continue through Episodes 517–750.
  5. After Episode 750 and its related tie-in material, watch One Piece Film: Gold if desired.
  6. Continue through Episode 889. Watch Episodes 895–896 if you want the Stampede tie-in, then watch One Piece: Stampede.
  7. Watch Episodes 1029–1030 before One Piece Film: Red. For the fewest spoilers, wait until after Episode 1085.
  8. Continue with Episodes 1086–1155, then Episode 1156 onward for Elbaph.

You do not need any movie to understand the anime’s main plot. Most theatrical films are standalone adventures or alternate versions of events, and they do not fit perfectly into the anime’s continuity.

Filler episodes you can skip

Filler does not adapt the manga’s main story, so it can be skipped without losing the central narrative. These are the larger filler blocks commonly omitted:

  • Episodes 54–61 — Warship Island
  • Episodes 131–135 — Post-Arabasta
  • Episodes 136–138 — Goat Island
  • Episodes 139–143 — Ruluka Island
  • Episodes 196–206 — G-8
  • Episodes 220–228 — Ocean’s Dream and Foxy’s Return
  • Episodes 326–336 — Ice Hunter and Chopper Man
  • Episodes 382–384 — Spa Island
  • Episodes 426–429 — Little East Blue
  • Episodes 575–578 — Z’s Ambition
  • Episodes 626–628 — Caesar Retrieval
  • Episodes 747–750 — Silver Mine
  • Episodes 780–782 — Marine Rookie
  • Episodes 895–896 — Cidre Guild
  • Episode 907 — 20th-anniversary special
  • Episodes 1029–1030 — Uta’s Past

Do not skip every episode marked “mixed” automatically. Some episodes combine filler material with canon scenes, and some promotional episodes are harmless but useful if you plan to watch an associated movie. If you want a strict shortcut, check the individual episode guide before skipping isolated episodes.

One Piece movies in release order

For the movies themselves, release order is the least confusing approach. There are 15 theatrical films in the catalog as of August 2026:

  1. One Piece: The Movie (2000)
  2. Clockwork Island Adventure (2001)
  3. Chopper’s Kingdom on the Island of Strange Animal Island (2002)
  4. Dead End Adventure (2003)
  5. The Cursed Holy Sword (2004)
  6. Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island (2005)
  7. The Giant Mechanical Soldier of Karakuri Castle (2006)
  8. Episode of Alabasta: The Desert Princess and the Pirates (2007)
  9. Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura (2008)
  10. One Piece Film: Strong World (2009)
  11. One Piece 3D: Straw Hat Chase (2011)
  12. One Piece Film: Z (2012)
  13. One Piece Film: Gold (2016)
  14. One Piece: Stampede (2019)
  15. One Piece Film: Red (2022)
Movie Suggested anime point
One Piece: The Movie After Episode 18
Clockwork Island Adventure After Episode 53
Chopper’s Kingdom After Episode 91
Dead End Adventure After Episode 143
The Cursed Holy Sword After Episode 195
Baron Omatsuri After Episode 228
The Giant Mechanical Soldier After Episode 228
Episode of Alabasta After Episode 130; it retells the arc
Episode of Chopper Plus After Episode 91; it substantially reworks Drum Island
Strong World After Episode 381, preferably after 426–429
Straw Hat Chase After Episode 516
Film: Z After Episode 578
Film: Gold After Episode 750 and its Silver Mine tie-in
Stampede After Episode 896
Film: Red After Episode 1030; after Episode 1085 is safer

These placements are approximate. The films may reveal characters, abilities, designs, or relationships that appear later in the anime even when their marketing tie-in occurred earlier. Film: Red is the clearest example: Episodes 1029–1030 lead directly into it, but finishing Wano gives better spoiler protection.

Optional recap specials

Recap specials are not substitutes for the original episodes on a first viewing. They remove scenes and character development to compress a long arc. Add them only if you want a refresher:

What is current, and where to find new episodes

The anime resumed after a three-month production hiatus on April 5, 2026, with the Elbaph Arc beginning at Episode 1156. The new broadcast structure caps the anime at a maximum of 26 episodes per year, split across two cours.

As of August 8, 2026, Episode 1172 is the latest released episode, with Episode 1173 scheduled for August 9 in the United States. Crunchyroll announced the Elbaph simulcast for the United States and several other territories, but subtitles, dubs, movies, and episode availability still vary by country.

On the Crunchyroll website, open Categories → Release Calendar to check upcoming releases. The release calendar is available on the website, not in the mobile app. If your service has not added a new episode yet, check its regional catalog and language settings before assuming the episode has not aired.

Series that should not be inserted into the anime order

  • Netflix’s live-action ONE PIECE: a separate adaptation. Its second season, ONE PIECE: Into the Grand Line, premiered on March 10, 2026.
  • THE ONE PIECE: Netflix’s separate anime remake of the manga’s opening East Blue material, scheduled to premiere in 2027.
  • One Piece Log: Fish-Man Island Saga: a re-edited and re-animated version of existing Fish-Man Island material. It is an optional alternate cut, not a continuation after Episode 1155.

These versions can be watched independently. Do not switch from Toei’s anime to the live-action series or remake as if either were the next season.

FAQ

Do I have to watch all the One Piece movies?

No. The theatrical movies are optional and are not required to follow the anime’s main story. Watch them in release order or use the suggested episode placements if you want to include them.

Should I follow seasons or episode numbers?

Follow episode numbers. Streaming services divide the long-running anime into different season packages, so season labels are inconsistent. Episode numbers and arc names are more reliable.

Can I skip One Piece filler?

Yes. Clearly identified filler arcs can be skipped without losing the manga-based story. Avoid skipping an entire range solely because one episode is labeled mixed, since it may contain canon material.

When should I watch One Piece Film: Red?

Watch Episodes 1029–1030 first for the direct tie-in. For stronger spoiler protection, finish the Wano arc through Episode 1085 before watching the film.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: watch the original anime from Episode 1 upward, using arc names rather than streaming-service season labels. Skip clearly marked filler if you want a faster route, and treat every movie and recap special as optional. For the safest movie order, wait until the recommended episode points—especially Episode 1085 before One Piece Film: Red.
