Instagram lets you look for Reels by subject, account, hashtag, audio, song, or location. The exact search layout is not identical for every user: Instagram changes navigation and tests different result pages by device, country, app version, and account.
Use the Instagram mobile app for the most search options. If the app does not show a dedicated Reels filter, you can still search through an account, hashtag, audio page, place page, the main Reels feed, or Instagram.com.
Search for Reels in the Instagram app
- Open Instagram and tap the Search magnifying-glass icon.
- Tap the search box at the top.
- Enter a subject, phrase, creator name, hashtag, song, audio title, or place.
- Press the search key on your phone’s keyboard.
- Open a relevant result. Depending on your version of Instagram, results may show Reels mixed with other content or may include categories such as Accounts, Audio, Tags, and Places.
If your results include a Reels or video category, tap it to narrow the results. Instagram does not guarantee that every account will have a permanent, dedicated Reels search tab.

Use more specific searches
Broad searches such as fitness or recipes can produce accounts and suggested topics instead of the Reel you want. Try a distinctive phrase, a creator’s username, or a complete hashtag instead:

Find Reels from a specific creator
- Tap Search.
- Enter the account’s username or display name.
- Tap the correct account under Accounts.
- On the profile, tap the Reels tab below the profile information.
- Tap the Reel you want to watch.
This is usually more reliable than searching a general topic when you know who posted the video. Public-account Reels can generally be viewed by anyone. Reels from a private account are available only to logged-in followers approved by that account.
Search Reels by hashtag
- Open Instagram Search.
- Search for the hashtag, including the
#symbol—for example,#onepanpasta. - Choose the matching result under Tags.
- Browse the public content on the hashtag page and open a Reel.
You can also tap a hashtag displayed below a post or Reel to open its hashtag page.
A hashtag page is not a complete, chronological archive of every Reel using that hashtag. Instagram ranks the results, and the order can be personalized. Reels from private accounts do not appear publicly on the corresponding hashtag page.

Search by song or audio
Find more Reels from audio you are already watching
- Open a Reel that uses the audio.
- Tap the audio track name at the bottom of the Reel.
- On the audio page, browse other Reels using that sound.
For licensed music, the audio page normally identifies the artist and track. For original audio, it identifies the creator’s username.
Search for a song or sound directly
- Tap Search and enter the song title, artist, sound name, or a distinctive lyric or phrase.
- Submit the search.
- Choose Audio if that category appears.
- Open the matching audio result to view its associated Reels or audio page.
Audio availability can vary by country, account type, privacy settings, and licensing agreements. A Reel can remain available even after its audio is muted if music rights change. An original sound may also be difficult to find if it belongs to a private account or has limited visibility.
View trending audio

- Open your profile.
- Tap Professional dashboard.
- Select Trending audio.
Instagram says this feature can show up to 50 currently trending audio tracks. Personal-account users can identify some trending sounds by opening a Reel, looking for the Trending arrow beside the audio name, tapping the audio name, and then tapping the Trending arrow at the top of the audio page.
Search for Reels by location
- Tap Search.
- Enter the location name.
- Choose the matching result under Places, if it appears.
- Browse the public content associated with that place and open a Reel.
You can also tap the location shown above a post or Reel to open its place page. Location results are not a complete list of every Reel filmed there. The Reel must have a location attached, the place must exist as an Instagram location, and the content must be visible to you.
Browse Reels without searching for a keyword
To browse recommendations, open the Reels surface using the Reels icon or tab in the Instagram app. Its position can change as Instagram tests different navigation layouts.
On a computer, go to Instagram.com, sign in, and click Reels in the left navigation. You can also use Search or Explore, depending on the navigation shown on your account.
The Reels feed is primarily a recommendation system, not a complete keyword-search database. Instagram can use accounts you follow, Reels and photos you interact with, and your connections when deciding what to show.
Search Instagram Reels on a computer
- Go to Instagram.com and sign in if necessary.
- Click Search or Explore.
- Enter your query.
- Open the matching Reel, account, hashtag, audio result, or place.
For direct Reel browsing, use this path:
Instagram.com → ReelsThe desktop search layout can differ from the mobile app, so checking Instagram.com is useful when the app displays only account results or does not show a Reels category.

Use Google or Bing to find a public Reel
Search engines sometimes find public Reels that Instagram’s own results do not show. Try:
site:instagram.com/reel/ "your exact phrase"Other examples:

site:instagram.com/reel/ fromusernameThis searches Google or Bing’s index; it does not search Instagram’s entire Reel database. Search-engine results can omit private content, recent posts, ordinary personal-account Reels, and public content that has not been indexed.
Meta says eligible public Reels and posts may be indexed when they were uploaded from January 1, 2020 onward, the account holder is over 18, and the account is public and professional. Even then, indexing is not guaranteed.
View or clear recent Instagram searches
Instagram records recent searches for items such as accounts, hashtags, audio, tags, and places. On the web, Instagram documents this route:
Search → Recent searchesRemove one search individually, or choose Clear all next to Recent. Clearing search history is temporary: a search can appear again after you perform it again.
Recent searches should not be treated as a guaranteed history of every Reel you watched. Instagram’s documented search-history tools cover searches, not a permanent record of all viewed Reels.

Why a Reel does not appear in search
| Possible reason | What it means |
|---|---|
| The account is private | Only approved followers can see its posts and Reels. Private content is not publicly discoverable through hashtag pages or search-engine indexing. |
| The Reel was deleted or archived | The original result may disappear, even if an old link or screenshot still exists. |
| The creator changed visibility | Changing an account to private, blocking you, or restricting the content can remove it from your results. |
| The audio was muted or changed | Music-rights changes can affect the audio page and the Reel’s sound, while leaving the video available. |
| Instagram ranked it lower | Search and Explore are personalized and do not promise exhaustive results. |
| The search layout changed | Your account may not currently have a dedicated Reels filter or may be part of a navigation test. |
| The app has a temporary problem | An outdated app, failed loading request, or cached result can prevent categories or videos from appearing. |
What to try when search shows accounts instead of Reels
- Replace a broad keyword with a more specific phrase.
- Search the exact hashtag, including
#. - Search for the creator’s username and open the profile’s Reels tab.
- Search the song or sound and select Audio, if available.
- Try Tags, Places, or Reels when those categories appear.
- Open Instagram.com in a browser.
- Update Instagram, close and reopen it, and retry the search.
What Instagram search cannot guarantee
- There is not one universal mobile Reels search tab for every Instagram account.
- A keyword search does not return every Reel containing that word.
- Hashtag results are not guaranteed to be complete or chronological.
- Google’s
site:instagram.com/reel/search does not cover all Instagram Reels. - Original audio is not always searchable or reusable.
- A missing Reel is not proof that the creator deleted it.
Search results can differ between two accounts because Instagram considers activity, followed accounts, interactions, and connections. A Reel that appears for one person may be ranked lower—or unavailable—for another.

FAQ
Can I search Instagram for Reels only?
Sometimes. After entering a search in the mobile app, Instagram may show a Reels or video category. The label is not available in the same place for every account, device, country, or app version. If it is missing, search through the creator’s profile, a hashtag, an audio page, or Instagram.com.
How do I find someone’s Reels on Instagram?
Search for the person’s username, open the correct account under Accounts, open the profile, and tap its Reels tab. Private-account Reels require you to be an approved follower.
How do I find a Reel by its song?
Search the song title or artist and choose Audio if that result category appears. If you already have a Reel using the song, tap the audio track name at the bottom to open its audio page and browse other Reels using it.
Why can’t I find a Reel I watched?
It may have been deleted, archived, made private, restricted, muted because of a rights change, or ranked out of your results. Instagram’s recent-search feature is not a guaranteed history of every Reel you watched.
Does Google search every Instagram Reel?
No. A query such as site:instagram.com/reel/ searches only public Reel pages indexed by Google or Bing. Private, recent, non-indexed, and many personal-account Reels will not appear.
