For a first-time watch, start with NCIS, then follow the franchise in release order: NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Origins, and finally NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
This order gives you the cleanest introduction to the characters, preserves the important reveals, and avoids making the 1991-set prequel feel like an unexplained collection of references. You do not need to alternate between shows episode by episode, but there are a few crossover checkpoints worth watching in sequence.
The best first-time viewing order
The most practical way to watch every released NCIS-branded series is to use release order rather than strict story chronology. Watch the flagship first, then move through the spin-offs in the order they were introduced.

Start here. The original series establishes Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Anthony DiNozzo, Ziva David, Abby Sciuto, Timothy McGee, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, and the wider continuity used by later shows. - NCIS: Los Angeles — Seasons 1–14
This is the first spin-off. Its team and Los Angeles office are introduced through the two-part NCIS storyline “Legend.” - NCIS: New Orleans — Seasons 1–7
The New Orleans team is introduced through the two-part NCIS story “Crescent City.” - NCIS: Hawai’i — Seasons 1–3
This is a separate Hawaii-based team that becomes especially relevant to the franchise’s later multi-show crossover. - NCIS: Sydney — Seasons 1–3
The first NCIS series set outside the United States pairs American NCIS agents with the Australian Federal Police. It is largely self-contained, so it does not require complicated interleaving with the other shows. - NCIS: Origins — Seasons 1–2
Although the story is set in 1991, watch this prequel after the original NCIS. It follows a young Gibbs at the fledgling Camp Pendleton office and is more rewarding once you understand Gibbs’s later identity and his history with Mike Franks. - NCIS: Tony & Ziva — Season 1
Save this for after the relevant Tony and Ziva story has unfolded in the flagship series, including Tony’s regular run and Ziva’s later return. The series follows the former agents in Paris as they raise their daughter and deal with an attack on Tony’s security company.
This is a series-level order. It is the easiest way to complete the franchise without constantly switching platforms, tones, and regional teams. It is not a complete episode-by-episode broadcast-order list.

Release-order checklist
| Step | Series | Seasons to watch | Why it belongs here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | NCIS | 1–23 | The flagship establishes the franchise’s characters and continuity. |
| 2 | NCIS: Los Angeles | 1–14 | Introduced through the flagship’s “Legend” backdoor pilot. |
| 3 | NCIS: New Orleans | 1–7 | Introduced through the flagship’s “Crescent City” two-parter. |
| 4 | NCIS: Hawai’i | 1–3 | Part of the franchise’s later three-series crossover. |
| 5 | NCIS: Sydney | 1–3 | A mostly self-contained Australia-set branch. |
| 6 | NCIS: Origins | 1–2 | A 1991 prequel best appreciated after the original series. |
| 7 | NCIS: Tony & Ziva | 1 | A continuation of the Tony-and-Ziva story. |
NCIS: Sydney‘s third season concluded with 20 episodes in 2026. NCIS: Tony & Ziva premiered on Paramount+ in September 2025 and its first season contains 10 episodes.
Should you watch the episodes in strict crossover order?
Usually, no. Each spin-off has its own regional team and season arcs, and most episodes can be watched without switching to another program. A full franchise-wide airdate sequence is possible, but it is cumbersome and can interrupt a season just as its story is gaining momentum.
Instead, use the following checkpoints if you want the important introductions and crossovers in the correct sequence.
1. Introducing Los Angeles
- NCIS Season 6, Episode 22: “Legend, Part 1”
- NCIS Season 6, Episode 23: “Legend, Part 2”
- Begin NCIS: Los Angeles.
These two episodes function as the backdoor pilot for the Los Angeles Office of Special Projects and lead directly into the spin-off. If you are watching the flagship one episode at a time, this is the natural point to sample or begin NCIS: Los Angeles.
2. Introducing New Orleans
- NCIS Season 11, Episode 18: “Crescent City”
- NCIS Season 11, Episode 19: “Crescent City: Part II”
- Begin NCIS: New Orleans.
The two-part story introduces the New Orleans team before its own series begins. You can watch both episodes as part of the original series and then move to the spin-off, or simply watch all of NCIS first and treat the episodes as the team’s introduction when you later start NCIS: New Orleans.

3. The New Orleans and flagship crossover
For a crossover-aware run, keep these installments together:
- NCIS Season 13, Episode 17: “After Hours”
- NCIS: New Orleans Season 3, Episode 14: “Pandora’s Box, Part II”
These belong to a crossover involving the flagship and New Orleans teams. Because streaming services can present episodes by separate show and season rather than by franchise chronology, check the original airdate order when you reach these episodes instead of assuming either show should always come first.

4. The three-show crossover
This is the crossover where sequence matters most. Watch it in this order:
- NCIS Season 20, Episode 10: “Too Many Cooks”
- NCIS: Hawai’i: “Deep Fake”
- NCIS: Los Angeles: “A Long Time Coming”
Do not treat these three episodes as interchangeable standalones. The story continues from the flagship to Hawaii and then to Los Angeles.
A practical hybrid order for crossover fans
If you want more continuity than the simple one-show-at-a-time plan but do not want to build a spreadsheet of every airdate, use this approach:

- Watch “Crescent City” and “Crescent City: Part II,” then start NCIS: New Orleans.
- When you reach the later New Orleans crossover involving “After Hours” and “Pandora’s Box, Part II,” use the original airdate order.
- Continue through the remaining spin-offs, saving the linked NCIS–Hawai’i–Los Angeles event for the sequence listed above.
- Watch NCIS: Origins after the flagship and NCIS: Tony & Ziva after the Tony-and-Ziva storyline.
This hybrid approach preserves the major handoffs without forcing you to jump between three or four shows every week.

NCIS: Origins is set in 1991, years before the flagship begins. That makes it the obvious choice for a strict chronological experiment, but not the best introduction for most viewers.
The prequel follows a young Gibbs at the early Camp Pendleton office and is narrated by Mark Harmon, the original actor associated with Gibbs. Its setup assumes that viewers recognize the older Gibbs and understand why Mike Franks and other pieces of Gibbs’s history matter. Watching the original series first turns those references into character history rather than unexplained continuity details.
If you have already watched NCIS, watching Origins next is a good way to explore Gibbs’s past. If you have never seen any NCIS series, start with the flagship.
What about JAG?
JAG is optional prehistory, not a required part of the normal NCIS watch-through.

The NCIS concept was introduced through two JAG Season 8 episodes:
- “Ice Queen”
- “Meltdown”
These episodes serve as the backdoor pilot for NCIS. Watch them immediately before NCIS Season 1 if you want to see the franchise’s television origin. You can also watch all of JAG first, but that adds a substantial military-legal drama commitment and is not necessary to understand any of the NCIS-branded series.
For most viewers, the best optional add-on is simply JAG Season 8’s “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown,” followed by NCIS Season 1.

If a season is missing from your streaming service, check authorized digital stores or physical media. A NCIS DVD box set can be useful for offline or longer-term access, but check the exact season count, region, and included episodes before buying. A box set labeled as a complete collection may cover only the flagship series or a selected run; it should not automatically be assumed to contain every NCIS spin-off.
What about the announced NCIS: New York?
NCIS: New York has been announced for CBS’s 2026–27 schedule as part of an all-NCIS Tuesday lineup. It should not be added to the released viewing order yet. Wait until episodes are available and its continuity position can be verified.
For now, the released NCIS-branded lineup consists of seven series: NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawai’i, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva.
Choose the right order for your goal
| If you want… | Use this approach |
|---|---|
| The easiest first watch | Watch the seven released series in release order, one show at a time. |
| The important crossover introductions | Use the “Legend,” “Crescent City,” and three-show crossover checkpoints. |
| Maximum continuity accuracy | Use the hybrid order and verify original airdates for crossover episodes. |
| Gibbs’s story from the earliest point | Start with Origins, but expect it to be more meaningful after watching the flagship. |
| The franchise’s television prehistory | Watch JAG Season 8’s “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown” before NCIS Season 1. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to watch JAG before NCIS?
No. JAG is optional. Watch Season 8’s “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown” only if you want to see the backdoor pilot that introduced the NCIS concept.
Should I watch NCIS: Origins first because it is set in 1991?
Usually not. Release order is better for a first viewing because Origins assumes that you already recognize Gibbs and understand the importance of Mike Franks and Gibbs’s later history.
Do I have to alternate between NCIS and every spin-off episode by episode?
No. Most episodes are self-contained within their regional teams. Watch each series in season order and use the listed crossover checkpoints when the story explicitly continues elsewhere.
What is the correct order for the major three-show crossover?
Watch NCIS Season 20, Episode 10, “Too Many Cooks,” then NCIS: Hawai’i’s “Deep Fake,” and then NCIS: Los Angeles’s “A Long Time Coming.”
Are all NCIS shows available on Paramount+?
The U.S. catalog snapshot used for this guide lists all 23 seasons of NCIS and streaming availability for NCIS, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Availability for other spin-offs, territories, plans, and future licensing windows can differ, so check the specific season before subscribing.
The Bottom Line
Start with NCIS, then watch Los Angeles, New Orleans, Hawai’i, Sydney, Origins, and Tony & Ziva in that order. Add the two JAG backdoor pilots only for franchise prehistory, and watch the listed crossover episodes in sequence when you want continuity beyond the simple show-by-show order.
