There is no single timeline for every DC animated production. For the most coherent experience, watch each shared continuity on its own: use release order for the television-led DC Animated Universe (DCAU), release order for the DC Animated Movie Universe (DCAMU), and release order for the Tomorrowverse. Only use the DCAU chronological list if you specifically want the story chronology, because several series, shorts and films overlap.
The DCAU begins with Batman: The Animated Series (1992), the DCAMU runs from Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013) through Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020), and the Tomorrowverse starts with Superman: Man of Tomorrow (2020) and concludes with the three-part Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths (2024).
If you are asking “What is the correct DC animated universe order?”, the answer depends on which universe you mean. Pick the continuity first, then follow its list. A Batman film released in the same decade as a DCAU title may still belong to a different world, with a different origin, age and supporting cast.

Choose the right continuity before you start
DC animation is a collection of continuities rather than one master universe. A character can have several animated origins, costumes and voice casts without those versions sharing a timeline. Starting with the wrong list is the usual reason a marathon seems contradictory.

| Tomorrowverse | Connected direct-to-video films | 2020–2024 | Post-reset film continuity | Release order |

The DCAU guide from The Popverse (2026) defines the DCAU as a shared continuity of television shows and movies. DC’s 2025 guide describes Justice League Dark: Apokolips War as the end of the DC Animated Movie Universe after the Flash resets the timeline. That reset is why the Tomorrowverse is a successor continuity, not a continuation in which every earlier event remains unchanged.
The formats also explain why the lists feel different. The DCAU was built through weekly television, so character relationships and status-quo changes accumulate over seasons. The DCAMU and Tomorrowverse are direct-to-video film runs: each entry is a feature, but the surrounding films supply context and consequences. Standalone projects are usually adaptations or experiments and do not need homework.
DCAU release order
Release order preserves the way the audience originally met the characters and lets crossovers develop naturally. The list includes the television series, direct-to-video films, web series and shorts that are generally grouped under the DCAU.

For a practical marathon, watch each season of a series in its original run, then place the films in the year shown above. The later films deliberately use the established DCAU designs and continuity, so they work best after the classic series rather than as an entry point.
The television labels can be confusing. The New Batman Adventures is the redesigned continuation of Batman: The Animated Series, not a separate Batman universe. Likewise, Justice League Unlimited expands the League series rather than rebooting it. The web series and short are often omitted from casual lists, but including them gives the fullest shared-continuity run.
DCAU chronological viewing order
This is an approximate story order, not an official episode-by-episode chronology. The shows were produced concurrently, some stories overlap, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker moves between future events and flashbacks. The order below follows the chronology used by the DCAU guide while keeping those caveats visible.
- Batman: The Animated Series — the early-career Gotham stories establish Bruce Wayne, his allies and his rogues.
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm — its principal story belongs during Batman’s early years, with flashbacks to his pre-costume life.
- Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero — set during the original animated-series era.
- Superman: The Animated Series — Metropolis stories expand the shared world beyond Gotham.
- The New Batman Adventures — the redesigned Gotham era follows the original Batman series.
- Lobo — the 2000 web series can be placed after the established Superman-era material.
- Gotham Girls — the web series focuses on Gotham’s women and fits after the related animated-series status quo.
- Static Shock — Virgil Hawkins’ series crosses into the wider DCAU while running alongside the other shows.
- Justice League — the founding League stories follow the heroes’ earlier solo adventures.
- Chase Me — the 2003 short is a compact Batman story placed with the later Gotham material.
- Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman — a later Batman film set after the original Gotham series.
- Justice League Unlimited — the expanded League roster and final television-era arcs.
- Batman and Harley Quinn — a 2017 return to the DCAU television continuity.
- Justice League vs. The Fatal Five — another late DCAU film that assumes familiarity with the League.
- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker flashback material — watch the historical flashbacks before the future-set portion.
- Batman Beyond — decades later, Terry McGinnis becomes Batman while an older Bruce Wayne mentors him.
- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker — after the flashbacks, watch the film’s present-day story in the future Gotham setting.
- The Zeta Project — this spin-off shares the future-era setting introduced by Batman Beyond.
- The 2014 Batman Beyond short — a later piece of future-era material.
- Justice League Unlimited episode “Epilogue” — the television continuity’s epilogue, which is why it belongs at the end of a story-focused rewatch even though the series was released earlier.
Because this chronology is approximate, release order is still the safer first-watch choice. Chronological order is most useful after you already know the character introductions and want the in-universe progression from young Batman to the future Justice League.

There is no need to split individual episodes between every concurrent show unless you enjoy timeline reconstruction. Watch a complete series run, or use the broad sequence above, and accept that crossovers were written to be understandable when broadcast. The important chronological landmark is the jump from the contemporary League era to the decades-later Batman Beyond setting.
DCAMU release order: the connected 2013–2020 film arc
The DC Animated Movie Universe begins with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013). Its altered timeline leads directly into the modern League and culminates in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020). DC’s 2020 editorial described this as a seven-year story and enumerated 15 films. Later guides, including the 2026 Rotten Tomatoes accounting, count 16 by including Constantine: City of Demons. The table uses that 16-film convention and identifies the disputed entry.
| # | Title | Release year | Continuity note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox | 2013 | Timeline-reset starting point |
| 2 | Justice League: War | 2014 | New League formation |
| 3 | Son of Batman | 2014 | Introduces the DCAMU’s Damian Wayne arc |
| 4 | Justice League: Throne of Atlantis | 2015 | Expands the League’s roster and world |
| 5 | Batman vs. Robin | 2015 | Continues the Batman–Damian relationship |
| 6 | Batman: Bad Blood | 2016 | Builds the Bat-family side of the continuity |
| 7 | Justice League vs. Teen Titans | 2016 | Connects the League and younger heroes |
| 8 | Justice League Dark | 2017 | Introduces the supernatural team |
| 9 | Teen Titans: The Judas Contract | 2017 | Teen Titans-focused continuation |
| 10 | Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay | 2018 | Suicide Squad story in the same timeline |
| 11 | The Death of Superman | 2018 | First half of the Superman event |
| 12 | Constantine: City of Demons | 2018 | Included in the later 16-film count |
| 13 | Reign of the Supermen | 2019 | Follows The Death of Superman |
| 14 | Batman: Hush | 2019 | Batman-centered mystery in the shared setting |
| 15 | Wonder Woman: Bloodlines | 2019 | Wonder Woman’s DCAMU story |
| 16 | Justice League Dark: Apokolips War | 2020 | Finale and timeline-reset endpoint |
Watch these films in the table order rather than trying to rearrange them by each hero’s personal chronology. The films were released as a connected arc, and character developments, deaths and the final reset are designed to accumulate from one release to the next.
The 15-versus-16 discrepancy is a counting convention, not a different ending. DC’s 2020 list treated the main seven-year sequence as 15 films; later enumerations place Constantine: City of Demons inside the same connected accounting. If you are following a 15-film checklist, you may see that title omitted; if you want the fuller 16-film run, watch it in the position shown above.

Tomorrowverse release order: the 2020–2024 successor continuity
The Tomorrowverse follows the DCAMU reset. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2026 guide counts 10 films, ending with the three-part Crisis on Infinite Earths event. Since the films were released as a connected sequence, release order is also the practical story order.
| # | Title | Release year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Superman: Man of Tomorrow | 2020 |
| 2 | Justice Society: World War II | 2021 |
| 3 | Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One | 2021 |
| 4 | Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two | 2021 |
| 5 | Green Lantern: Beware My Power | 2022 |
| 6 | Legion of Super-Heroes | 2023 |
| 7 | Justice League: Warworld | 2023 |
| 8 | Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part One | 2024 |
| 9 | Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Two | 2024 |
| 10 | Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths – Part Three | 2024 |
Do not insert DCAU or DCAMU films between these entries. Familiar heroes are reintroduced with new histories, and the 2024 trilogy is the conclusion of this specific run rather than a universal ending for every DC animated production.
For a first Tomorrowverse marathon, keep the two-part Long Halloween story together and watch all three Crisis on Infinite Earths parts consecutively. The release sequence supplies the intended escalation from individual heroes and teams to the multiverse-scale finale.

Standalone and alternate-continuity films
Several well-known films are intentionally outside the three lists above. Treating them as missing chapters creates false continuity connections.
Recommended Free Tools
Standalone adaptations
- Superman: Doomsday
- Wonder Woman
- Batman: Under the Red Hood
- Batman: Soul of the Dragon
- Injustice
- Catwoman: Hunted
These titles can be watched in any order. Each establishes its own version of the characters unless a film’s own marketing identifies it as part of a specific mini-series. A standalone film can therefore be an excellent starting point when you want one complete story without committing to a multi-year sequence.
Batman: Gotham Knight
Batman: Gotham Knight is an alternate animated interpretation associated with the Nolan-era Batman universe. It is not an episode of the DCAU and should not be placed between DCAU films.
LEGO productions
The LEGO direct-to-video films form their own continuity. They do not share continuity with the theatrical LEGO Movieverse, so a LEGO-branded title should be grouped by its own release line rather than added to a DC superhero timeline.
How to plan your watch
If you are new to DC animation
- Pick one continuity, preferably the DCAU if you want television character development or the DCAMU if you want a film-only arc.
- Use release order for the first pass. It prevents spoilers and preserves introductions, redesigns and crossover payoffs.
- Finish that continuity before switching to another. The same character name can represent a different origin, age and history after a reset.
If the full DCAU run feels too large, begin with Batman: The Animated Series, continue through Superman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures, then move into Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Add the films and web projects at their listed release points when you want the complete version.
If you want only films
Choose the 16-film DCAMU table for the longest single connected film story, or the 10-film Tomorrowverse table for the later post-reset run. The DCAU also has films, but its essential context comes from the television series, so a film-only DCAU marathon omits much of the continuity those movies assume.
If you have already watched the DCAU
Rewatch it chronologically using the approximate list, paying particular attention to the Batman Beyond placement and the flashbacks in Return of the Joker. End with “Epilogue” for the strongest sense of a television-era conclusion.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you are switching universes
Finish the current continuity’s finale before starting the next one. Move from Apokolips War to Superman: Man of Tomorrow only as a deliberate reset, not as the next episode of one uninterrupted story. The visual style may change gradually, but the reset is the decisive continuity boundary.
Common order mistakes
- Combining every title into one timeline: DCAU, DCAMU and Tomorrowverse are separate continuities.
- Calling the DCAMU a 15- or 16-film list without explanation: DC’s 2020 enumeration has 15; later counts add Constantine: City of Demons for 16.
- Putting Batman Beyond immediately after its release year in a chronology list: its story occurs decades after the earlier DCAU adventures.
- Confusing a reset with a sequel: Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox resets the DCAMU timeline, while Superman: Man of Tomorrow begins the Tomorrowverse.
- Assuming every Batman animated film belongs to the DCAU: films such as Under the Red Hood, Gotham Knight and Hush come from different continuities or arcs.
- Treating LEGO releases as one franchise timeline: direct-to-video LEGO DC films and the theatrical LEGO Movieverse are separate.
- Skipping a title because its format is different: Lobo, Gotham Girls and Chase Me are web or short-form entries, but they are part of the broad DCAU release list.
- Expecting exact chronology from overlapping television seasons: the DCAU chronological sequence is an approximation, so use release order when an episode-level placement becomes uncertain.
Release order versus chronological order: which is better?
| Goal | Recommended order | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First-time viewer | Release order | Preserves introductions, reveals and intended pacing. |
| DCAU continuity study | Approximate chronological order | Shows the progression from early Batman stories to the future-era Batman Beyond setting. |
| DCAMU marathon | Release order | The 2013–2020 films form a deliberately serialized arc. |
| Tomorrowverse marathon | Release order | The 2020–2024 films build toward the three-part Crisis finale. |
| Sampling famous films | Standalone order of your choice | Independent films do not require a shared-universe sequence. |
The simplest answer is therefore: start with the release list for the continuity you want, and reserve the DCAU chronological list for a second viewing. No ordering method can merge all DC animated productions without contradicting their separate resets and alternate worlds.

Are the DCAU, DCAMU and Tomorrowverse connected?
They are related as DC-branded animated projects, but they are not one continuous timeline. The DCAU is the television-led continuity beginning in 1992. The DCAMU is the connected 2013–2020 film arc. The Tomorrowverse begins after that reset with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and runs through the 2024 Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy.
Should I watch DC animated movies by release date or chronology?
Use release date for a first viewing in every major continuity. It preserves the order in which characters, redesigns and reveals were introduced. Use the approximate chronological list primarily for a DCAU rewatch, where the future setting of Batman Beyond makes story chronology meaningfully different from release chronology.
How many films are in the DCAMU?
The commonly cited totals are 15 and 16. DC’s 2020 enumeration lists 15 films; later guides count 16 by including Constantine: City of Demons. The table here uses the 16-film convention and labels that inclusion so you can reconcile either checklist.
How many films are in the Tomorrowverse?
There are 10 films in the 2020–2024 run when the three Crisis on Infinite Earths installments are counted separately. Watch all ten in release order.
Can I watch the DCAU films without the shows?
You can, but you will miss much of the relationship and world-building those films assume. The DCAU is television-led, unlike the film-only DCAMU and Tomorrowverse. At minimum, the main Batman, Superman and Justice League series provide the context for the later DCAU movies.

Where does Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker go?
Its flashback material belongs before the future-set portion. In a chronological rewatch, place the flashbacks first, watch Batman Beyond, then finish the film’s present-day story. In release order, watch the 2000 film where it appears in the DCAU list.
Is Batman: Hush part of the DCAU?
No. The animated Batman: Hush is part of the DCAMU table, released in 2019. It should not be inserted into the DCAU sequence simply because it features Batman.
Are the LEGO DC films part of the theatrical LEGO Movieverse?
No. The direct-to-video LEGO DC productions have their own continuity and should be kept separate from the theatrical LEGO Movieverse.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the correct DC animated universe order?
Choose the continuity first. Use release order for the DCAU, DCAMU and Tomorrowverse; use the approximate chronological list mainly for a DCAU rewatch.
Are the DCAU, DCAMU and Tomorrowverse one universe?
No. The DCAU is television-led, the DCAMU is the 2013–2020 film arc, and the Tomorrowverse is the post-reset 2020–2024 film continuity.
Is the DCAMU a 15-film or 16-film series?
Both counts are used. DC’s 2020 list has 15; later guides count 16 by including Constantine: City of Demons.
Where should I put Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker?
In chronology, place its flashbacks before Batman Beyond and its future-set present-day story afterward. In release order, watch it as the 2000 DCAU film.
Can standalone DC animated films be watched in any order?
Yes. Titles such as Superman: Doomsday, Under the Red Hood, Injustice and Catwoman: Hunted are separate stories unless identified as part of a specific line.
The Bottom Line
Start with one continuity, not one giant DC list. Watch the DCAU, DCAMU and Tomorrowverse in release order on a first pass; revisit the DCAU chronologically only when you want its approximate in-universe progression. Count the DCAMU as 15 or 16 according to whether Constantine: City of Demons is included, keep standalone and LEGO projects separate, and treat each reset as a real boundary between worlds.
