Public Wi-Fi is usually safe for ordinary browsing because most websites encrypt traffic, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Still, verify the network with venue staff, protect your accounts and device, and remember that encryption cannot make a fraudulent website trustworthy. For sensitive tasks, cellular data is another option when available.
Is public Wi-Fi safe?
It can be. The FTC says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” That guidance, in its February 2023 article Are Public Wi-Fi Networks Safe? What You Need To Know, reflects the fact that most websites now use encryption.
Encryption helps protect information as it travels between your browser and a website. Look for HTTPS in the address bar or the browser’s lock symbol. These indicators mean the connection to that site is encrypted; they do not prove that the site itself is honest.

A scammer can use encryption too. As the FTC cautions, “If you visit a scammer’s website, your data may be encrypted on its way to the site, but it won’t be safe from scammers operating the site.” Check the address and be wary of unexpected login prompts or requests for personal information, even when HTTPS appears.

How to connect to free Wi-Fi safely
- Ask venue staff for the official network name and sign-in steps. Do this at an airport, café, hotel, library, or other venue, particularly when multiple similar network names appear. CISA’s public Wi-Fi tip card advises checking the network name and login procedure with staff: CISA Public Wi-Fi Tip Card.
- Join the confirmed network. A familiar venue name alone does not prove a hotspot is genuine; an attacker can set up a similarly named network.
- Use HTTPS for websites. Check the address bar for HTTPS or the lock symbol, while remembering that this only indicates encryption in transit—not that the destination is legitimate.
- Keep your device software current. Update your operating system, browser, and security software. Enable automatic updates where appropriate.
- Protect your accounts. Use strong passwords and turn on two-factor authentication where available.
- Pause before entering sensitive information. Verify the website address and the reason for any request. Encryption will not prevent a scam site from receiving information you submit.
Should you use a VPN on public Wi-Fi?
A VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN server, adding a layer of protection on that part of the connection. It is not a substitute for choosing the right hotspot, checking website addresses, or securing your accounts. A VPN provider becomes another party you must trust, and a VPN app may not encrypt all traffic.
Before choosing an app, investigate who operates it, read its privacy and data-sharing terms, check requested permissions, and look for independent information about whether it encrypts traffic. When is cellular data a better option?
For a sensitive task, using cellular data instead of a public hotspot is a reasonable alternative when service is available. Whether that is practical depends on your connection and mobile-data allowance. A VPN is an additional service layer, not a replacement for an internet connection.

Quick checklist before you sign in
- Confirm the network name and sign-in process with venue staff.
- Use HTTPS, but do not treat the lock symbol as proof that a website is legitimate.
- Keep your operating system, browser, and security software updated.
- Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication where available.
- Consider cellular data for sensitive activity when practical.
- If using a VPN, assess its operator, encryption, permissions, and privacy terms rather than relying on promises of anonymity.
