SafeSearch is configured separately in each search engine. Turning it off in Google does not change Bing, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo, and a managed device or network may prevent the change altogether.
Use the section for the search engine you use. The available setting names differ: Google offers Filter, Blur, and Off; Bing and Yahoo use Strict, Moderate, and Off; DuckDuckGo uses On and Off.
What SafeSearch does
SafeSearch reduces the chance of explicit images, videos, text, and links appearing in search results. It does not control the entire internet, and it does not apply to other search engines when changed in one service.

How to turn off SafeSearch on Google
On a desktop browser
- Open Google’s SafeSearch settings.
- Select Off.
- Return to Google Search and run a new search.
You can also reach the same setting from a Google results page: select your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner, then select SafeSearch settings and choose Off.

Google’s three choices work as follows:
- Filter: blocks explicit results.
- Blur: blurs explicit images, although explicit text and links may still appear when relevant.
- Off: allows results that may include explicit content.
On Android
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap SafeSearch.
- Select Off.
On an iPhone or iPad
In a mobile browser, open Google’s SafeSearch settings and select Off. Google’s documented mobile-app path specifically covers Android; the browser settings page is the dependable route on iOS and iPadOS.
How to turn off SafeSearch on Bing
Bing uses the same web path on desktop and mobile browsers:
- Go to Bing.com.
- Select the GlobalNavButton icon in the upper-right corner. Depending on the window size, this may appear as the menu or settings icon.
- Select Settings.
- Select More.
- Under SafeSearch, choose Off.
- Scroll to the bottom of the menu and select Save.
Bing’s options are:
- Strict: the strongest filtering level.
- Moderate: a less restrictive level.
- Off: turns Bing SafeSearch off.
This only changes Bing. It has no effect on Google, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo settings.

On a desktop browser
- Open Yahoo Search and sign in.
- From a search-results page, select the apps icon or select Settings.
- Select Preferences.
- Open the SafeSearch preference drop-down menu.
- Select Off.
Yahoo’s current instructions end after selecting the preference; they do not list a separate Save button.

On a phone
- Open Yahoo Search in a browser or open the Yahoo Search app.
- Make sure you are signed in.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Preferences.
- Select Off.
- On iPhone or iPad, tap Done.
Yahoo labels its levels Strict, Moderate, and Off. Strict removes adult content, Moderate removes images and video, and Off does not filter results.
How to turn off SafeSearch on DuckDuckGo
Using DuckDuckGo Settings
- Open DuckDuckGo.
- Open Settings.
- Find Safe Search.
- Select Off.
On a results page, DuckDuckGo also provides a Safe Search control in a drop-down box below or near the search box. Select Off there if it is visible.
Using the !safeoff search shortcut
Add !safeoff to a DuckDuckGo query:
example search !safeoffThe shortcut turns Safe Search off for that search. It is useful when you do not want to change the saved browser preference.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=example&kp=-2Do not use safe.duckduckgo.com when you want filtering disabled. DuckDuckGo says that this hostname always uses Strict Safe Search.
Why SafeSearch keeps turning back on
If the Off option is unavailable, greyed out, or accompanied by a lock icon, the setting is being controlled outside the local search page. Common causes include:

Only the parent can change it for a Family Link-managed account.
- School or workplace administration: an organization can enforce search filtering on managed accounts, browsers, devices, or networks.
- Public or family-safe Wi-Fi: the network may redirect searches through a filtered service.
- Antivirus or family-safety software: security software can force filtering independently of the search engine.
- Browser extensions or settings: an extension can add Google’s
safe=activeparameter to searches, forcing SafeSearch on. - Lost cookies or local storage: Google can reset the preference when you are signed out and delete cookies. DuckDuckGo stores settings in browser cookies and local storage, so clearing site data can remove its saved preference.
What to check
- Look for a lock icon beside SafeSearch. If it is present, the restriction must be removed by the parent, administrator, network owner, or security software controlling it.
- Sign in to Google before changing the setting if you want it saved across devices.
- Temporarily test a personal connection instead of public or school Wi-Fi, if you are authorized to do so.
- Review browser extensions and remove or disable unfamiliar search, parental-control, or security extensions.
- Check whether the search URL contains
safe=active. If it returns after being removed, an extension or managed browser policy may be adding it. - For DuckDuckGo, check whether the network redirects
duckduckgo.comtosafe.duckduckgo.com. That redirect enforces strict filtering.
SafeSearch is not a complete content filter
Turning SafeSearch off does not guarantee that every explicit result will appear. Google describes the setting as allowing results that may include explicit content, and filtering is not perfectly accurate. Conversely, SafeSearch is not a replacement for device-level parental controls: it applies only to the search engine where it is enabled and does not block content opened directly on other websites.

After changing the setting, run a new search and check the search engine’s setting again. If the selection has reverted, the problem is usually an account, browser, device, or network policy rather than a missing button.

Does turning off Google SafeSearch turn it off on Bing or Yahoo?
No. SafeSearch is configured independently by each search engine. Change the setting separately in Google, Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo if you use all four.

Can I turn off SafeSearch on a Family Link account?
Not locally. Google says SafeSearch is set to Filter for Family Link-managed children, and only the parent can change it.
Does DuckDuckGo’s safe.duckduckgo.com turn filtering off?
No. DuckDuckGo says that safe.duckduckgo.com always uses Strict Safe Search. To disable filtering, use DuckDuckGo Settings, add !safeoff to a query, or use the documented kp=-2 URL parameter.
Why did SafeSearch turn back on after I cleared my browser data?
Google can reset the setting when an unsigned-in user deletes cookies. DuckDuckGo also stores the preference in cookies and local storage, so clearing site data can remove its saved setting.
The Bottom Line
Choose Off in the search engine’s own settings: Google’s SafeSearch page, Bing’s Settings → More, Yahoo’s Settings → Preferences, or DuckDuckGo’s Settings → Safe Search. If the option is locked or keeps reverting, an account, browser, device, or network administrator is enforcing the restriction.
