This Itechguide teaches you how to tag someone on Instagram. The guide covers steps to tag someone on Instagram from Android or iPhone.
Option 1: Tag Someone from an Android Device
This section covers steps to tag someone on an existing or a new post..
Method 1: Tag Someone on an Existing Instagram Post
- Open the Instagram App for Android.
- Then, open the post you want to tag people on.
- To edit the post, tap the 3 dots on the top right of the post. A set of options will be displayed.
- From the displayed options, tap Edit.
- Then, when the post opens for editing, tap Tag people.
- When the Tag people screen opens, on the picture, tap the person you want to tag. The point you tapped will display Who’s this?.
- Type the name of the person you just tapped in the picture into the search bar.
- After typing the person’s name in the search bar, to initiate search, tap the search icon on your keyboard.
- Based on your search, Instagram search will display a list of names.
- From the displayed names, to tag someone on Instagram, tap the name of the person in the picture.
- The name will be added to the part of the picture you tapped – you have tagged this person in the post!
Repeat the steps to tag everybody you wish to tag in the picture.
- When you finish, on the top right of the Tag people screen, tap the save icon.
Method 2: Tag Someone on a New Instagram Post
- At the bottom of the App, tap the new post icon. Your photo Gallery will open.
- Tap on the photo you want to post. Then, on the top right of the screen, tap Next.
- On the next screen, select a version of the picture you want to post and tap Next.
- Then, on the New post screen, tap Tag people. The Tag people screen will open.
- Tap on the person you want to tag in the picture. Who’s this? will be displayed. To tag this person, type the person’s Instagram name into the search bar.
- Then, to initiate Instagram search, tap the search key on you keyboard. A list of users matching your search will be displayed.
- From the displayed list, to tag someone on Instagram, tap on the name of the person you selected in your picture.
- The person’s name will be displayed on the picture. You have tagged the person!
- When you finish tagging everybody in the picture, on the top right of the screen, tap the save icon.
- Finally, to tag someone on new Instagram post, at the top right of the screen tap Share.
Option 2: Tag Someone from iPhone
This section covers steps to tag people on Instagram for an existing or a new post.

Method 1: Tag Someone on an Existing Instagram Post
- Open the existing Instagram post you want to tag people on. Then, tap the 3 horizontal dots on the top right of the post. A set of options will be displayed.
- From the list of displayed options, tap Edit. The post will open for editing.
- Then, to start tagging the people in the picture, tap Tag people…
- Tap the person you want to tag in the picture. Instagram search will open immediately.
- Type the name of the person you want to tag into the search bar. Instagram search will display a list of names based on the name you typed in the search bar.
- From the displayed search result, tap the name of the person you want to tag in the picture.
- The person’s Instagram name will be displayed on the person in the picture – you have tagged the person!
- To save your changes, on the top right of the App, tap Done.
Method 2: Tag Someone on a New Instagram Post
- At the bottom of the Instagram App for iPhone, tap the new post icon. The App will open your Camera scroll.
- Tap the photo with people you want to tag. Then, at the top right of the screen, tap Next.
- On the next page, select a version of the picture you want to post. Then, tap Next.
- Finally, on the New post screen, to tag someone on Instagram, tap Tag people. The App will open the Tag people screen.
- Tap on the person your want to tag in the picture. Instagram search will open.
- Type the Instagram name of the person you want to tag into the search bar.
- Then, from the displayed result, tap the name of the person in the picture. The person’s Instagram name will be displayed on the picture.
- When you finish tagging on the people you want to tag in the picture, on the top right of the page, tap Done.
- Finally, to tag someone on Instagram for a new post, on the top right of the New post screen, tap Share.
