Store a power bank indoors in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat sources. Never leave it in a parked vehicle. Keep it dry, prevent drops and metal-to-terminal contact, and follow the temperature and charging limits in the exact model’s manual. There is no single safe temperature range or storage charge level that applies to every power bank.

For long-term storage, use the manufacturer’s stated charge percentage and inspection interval. If a bank is swollen, leaking, unusually hot, damaged, or venting gas, stop using it immediately and follow the manufacturer’s recall and disposal instructions.

The safe storage routine at a glance

These rules cover most everyday situations, while the product manual remains the controlling source for a particular model:

  • Choose a cool, dry indoor location away from direct sunlight, radiators, heaters, hot appliances and other heat sources. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) says to “store the power bank in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight” and warns, “Don’t leave a power bank in a parked vehicle.” ACCC power-bank guidance
  • Do not charge a power bank while it is very hot or very cold. Let it return naturally to the charging range specified by its maker.
  • Keep the unit dry and protect it from crushing, punctures and hard impacts.
  • Prevent loose keys, coins, cables or other metal objects from touching its terminals. A pouch or sleeve can help with separation and physical protection, but it is not temperature insulation.
  • For storage lasting months, follow the maker’s charge-level and recharge schedule rather than assuming a universal percentage.
  • Take any swollen, leaking, smoking, venting, overheating or physically damaged unit out of service.

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), citing the National Fire Protection Association, says lithium-ion batteries should be stored at room temperature when possible and should not be charged below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C). Those are general battery-safety limits, not a replacement for the instructions supplied with your power bank. USFA battery-fire guidance

Why temperature and storage conditions matter

A power bank contains lithium-ion cells, a charging circuit and protective electronics in a compact enclosure. Heat accelerates battery aging and can make an already damaged cell more hazardous. Moisture can corrode contacts or circuit boards, while crushing and punctures can damage the cell internally. Very low temperatures reduce available performance and make charging conditions more demanding.

“Safe temperature” has three different meanings that are often confused:

Term What it means What to check
Storage temperature The range in which an unused bank may be kept. The manual’s storage specification; it may differ from operating and charging limits.
Operating temperature The range for powering a phone or other device. The maker’s range for use under load.
Charging temperature The range in which the bank may safely accept a charge. Never infer this range from a storage or operating figure.

Manufacturers do not use one universal specification. For example, an Anker safety guide lists 32°F to 95°F (0°C to 35°C) for operating and storage, while a separate Anker maintenance article describes 0°C to 25°C as an optimized operating range and says not to store a charger in a hot or humid environment. These are Anker recommendations, not industry-wide limits. Anker Power Bank Safety Guide and Anker portable-charger maintenance guide

How to store a power bank in hot weather

Move it indoors before the temperature rises

A parked car is a particularly bad storage location. The cabin can become much hotter than the outdoor air, and sunlight through the windows can heat the bank directly. Bring the power bank into an air-conditioned or otherwise moderate indoor area before leaving the vehicle. Do not keep it on a dashboard, windowsill, patio, greenhouse, near a cooker, or beside a radiator.

At home, select a shaded shelf or drawer with ordinary indoor conditions and some ventilation. Do not bury a warm bank under clothing or bedding, and do not place it against a heat-producing charger, laptop or game console.

What to do when the bank feels hot

  1. Disconnect the bank from the phone, wall charger or other equipment.
  2. Place it on a nonflammable, stable surface away from paper, fabrics and direct sun.
  3. Allow it to cool naturally at room temperature. Do not put it in a freezer or refrigerator, and do not use a hair dryer, ice pack or other direct heating or cooling method.
  4. Inspect the case for bulging, cracks, leaking fluid, a chemical smell, smoke or unusual deformation.
  5. If it remains unusually hot, behaves erratically, or shows damage, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or the appropriate local hazardous-waste authority.

The ACCC specifically advises letting a power bank cool after use before recharging. A bank that is merely warm from normal use can be allowed to return to room temperature; a bank that is painfully hot or showing abnormal behavior should be treated as potentially defective rather than simply cooled and reused.

Charging after heat exposure

Do not plug in a hot power bank to “top it up.” Wait until it has returned to the charging temperature in its manual. The USFA’s general guidance says not to charge below 0°C (32°F) or above 40°C (105°F); the Anker safety guide uses a narrower 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) range. Because these limits come from different sources and products, use the exact model’s stated charging range whenever it is available.

How to store a power bank in cold weather

Separate cold storage from cold charging

General guidance does not establish one universal minimum temperature for storing every power bank. A model may tolerate temporary cold storage yet prohibit charging until it has warmed, or it may specify a different range altogether. Check the manual for the storage, operating and charging limits separately.

If a bank has been in a cold car, garage, backpack or outdoor location, bring it inside and let it warm naturally before switching it on or charging it. Keep it in a dry place while it warms so condensation does not form inside or around its ports. Do not apply direct heat, place it on a radiator, or use a heated pad.

Cold-weather symptoms

A cold power bank may show reduced output, shut down under load or refuse to charge. Those symptoms do not prove permanent damage. Allow the unit to reach the model’s specified temperature range, then inspect it and try again. If it still overheats, swells, leaks, smells chemical, or behaves abnormally, retire it instead of repeatedly attempting to charge it.

Outdoor and winter travel

Carry the bank inside an insulated bag only as a way to reduce exposure to cold; do not assume insulation makes an unspecified temperature safe. Keep it away from snow, rain and condensation, and do not place it next to wet gloves or a leaking bottle. When moving between a cold exterior and a warm room, leave the bank disconnected until it has acclimated and is visibly dry.

Source Temperature advice Scope and qualification
U.S. Fire Administration, reviewed November 7, 2024 Store lithium-ion batteries at room temperature when possible; do not charge below 32°F (0°C) or above 105°F (40°C). General public battery guidance citing NFPA; not a model manual.
Anker Power Bank Safety Guide 32°F–95°F (0°C–35°C). Listed for operating and storage in that guide; Anker-specific.
Anker portable-charger maintenance article, March 15, 2022 0°C–25°C as an optimized operating temperature; avoid hot or humid storage. An optimized operating range, not a universal storage or charging limit.

If the manual supplied with your bank conflicts with a general web article, follow the manual or ask the manufacturer for clarification. Record the model number and keep a copy of the instructions so you can check the limits later.

Charging a power bank before storage

Short breaks of days or weeks

For ordinary short-term storage, there is no need to force a full charge immediately before putting the bank away. Let it cool, ensure it is dry, disconnect cables and store it in the recommended environment. Avoid leaving it permanently connected to a charger unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that use.

Storage lasting several months

Long-term charge advice is model-specific. Anker’s Power Bank Safety Guide recommends about 60% charge and recharging every three months. Treat that as Anker’s recommendation, not a rule for every brand or capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the manual for a target storage charge and maintenance interval.
  2. Let the bank reach room temperature and confirm it is dry and undamaged.
  3. Charge or discharge it to the specified level using a compatible charger.
  4. Disconnect it, label the date if useful, and store it in a cool, dry, shaded place.
  5. At the recommended interval, inspect the case and ports before recharging. Stop if you find swelling, leakage, corrosion, cracks or abnormal heat.

Do not deliberately run a stored bank completely flat unless the manufacturer instructs you to do so. If no maintenance schedule is provided, ask the maker rather than importing another model’s percentage or interval.

Physical protection, bags and travel

A pouch, sleeve or case can prevent scratches, reduce impact damage and keep terminals from touching coins or keys. It does not cool a bank, make a hot car safe, or permit charging outside the manufacturer’s range.

For air travel, the Federal Aviation Administration says spare, uninstalled lithium-ion batteries—including power banks—must be carried in carry-on baggage only. Its PackSafe guidance lists a case, sleeve, retail packaging, tape or a snug plastic bag as ways to protect terminals from short circuits. That aviation rule concerns transport and terminal protection, not temperature control. FAA PackSafe lithium-battery guidance

When a power bank must be taken out of service

Stop-use warning signs

  • Swelling, bulging or a case that no longer closes normally.
  • Leaking liquid, a sharp chemical odor, hissing or venting gas.
  • Smoke, sparks, melting, scorching or persistent overheating.
  • Cracks, punctures, crushing or severe impact damage.
  • Repeated unexpected shutdowns, failure to charge, or abnormal behavior after temperature exposure.

Unplug the bank if it is safe to do so, move people away, and keep the device away from flammable materials. Do not open the enclosure, squeeze a swollen cell, puncture it, immerse it in water or put it in household trash. For immediate fire or smoke, leave the area and call local emergency services.

Check recalls by exact model

Recall notices apply to named products, not to all power banks. For example, a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warning dated September 17, 2026 covered about 12,500 Hererod jump starters/power banks after 16 fire reports, including seven reports of property damage. Those figures describe that specific warning and are not an estimate of power-bank fires generally. CPSC Hererod warning

A separate CPSC recall dated November 13, 2025 covered named Belkin portable power banks and wireless charging stands: about 83,500 units in the United States and about 2,385 sold in Canada. Again, those counts apply only to the recalled products. CPSC Belkin recall

Search the CPSC recalls and warnings database, your country’s product-safety authority and the manufacturer’s support page using the exact brand, model and serial number. If recalled, stop using it and follow the specified remedy. CPSC advises consumers with certain defective or recalled products to contact their local hazardous-waste authority before drop-off because acceptance and procedures vary. A practical storage checklist

  • Location: Indoors, cool, dry, shaded and away from heat sources.
  • Vehicle: Remove it from parked cars, even when the outside air feels moderate.
  • Condition: No swelling, cracks, leaks, smoke, chemical odor or abnormal heat.
  • Temperature: Check the model’s storage, operating and charging ranges separately.
  • Charging: Never charge while unusually hot or cold; use the stated charging range.
  • Long-term level: Follow the manufacturer’s target and inspection interval; Anker’s example is about 60% and every three months.
  • Protection: Keep terminals away from metal and use a pouch for physical separation, not insulation.
  • Travel: Carry spare power banks in carry-on baggage and protect terminals under current aviation rules.
  • End of life: Use the official recall remedy or local hazardous-waste route, never household garbage.

Common situations and the correct response

“I left it in a hot car.”

Remove it, disconnect it and let it cool naturally indoors. Do not charge it while hot. Inspect for swelling, leakage, odor, deformation or persistent abnormal heat; retire it and seek manufacturer or hazardous-waste guidance if any sign appears.

“It was in a freezing backpack overnight.”

Bring it indoors, keep it dry and let it warm naturally to the range in its manual before use or charging. Because no universal cold-storage minimum is established, do not guess from another model’s specification.

“The bank is warm during normal charging.”

Some warmth can occur, but charging should remain within the maker’s stated range and the unit should not become unusually hot, smell abnormal or deform. Stop charging if those warning signs occur.

“Can I store it in a protective pouch?”

Yes, if the pouch keeps terminals from metal objects and protects against knocks. It does not make a hot or cold location safe and should not be used to conceal a damaged bank.

“How often should an unused bank be recharged?”

Use the manufacturer’s schedule. Anker recommends checking and recharging every three months at about 60% for long-term storage; other models may specify different values or no fixed interval.

Bottom line

Keep a power bank indoors, cool, dry, shaded and physically protected; never leave it in a parked vehicle. Let a hot or cold unit return naturally to its model-specific range before charging, and do not invent a universal temperature or storage percentage. The moment a bank swells, leaks, vents, overheats or is recalled, stop using it and follow official disposal instructions.
