To stop Microsoft Edge from launching Copilot unexpectedly, hide its toolbar button, disable the separate Copilot new-tab experience, and turn off browser-context access. In Edge, open Settings > Appearance > Copilot and Sidebar (called Copilot and AI in some versions), choose Copilot under App specific settings, and switch off Show Copilot button on the toolbar. Then check Copilot new tab page and disable it if an AI-focused tab appears at startup. These visibility controls are independent from privacy controls that stop Copilot reading the current page, open tabs, page title, or browsing history. If a setting is unavailable, keeps reverting, or Copilot remains enabled, an administrator policy, Edge version, account, or regional availability is usually responsible.
How do I hide the Copilot button in Microsoft Edge?
Hiding the toolbar button is the quickest user-level way to prevent accidental Copilot launches. It removes the visible entry point from the current Edge profile but does not change the separate controls that govern webpage, tab, or history context.
- Open Microsoft Edge and select the Settings and more button (the three dots).
- Choose Settings.
- Open Appearance, then select Copilot and Sidebar. Some Edge builds label this area Copilot and AI.
- Under App specific settings, select Copilot.
- Turn off Show Copilot button on the toolbar.
Close Settings and look at the right side of the toolbar. The Copilot icon should no longer be displayed. This change is a profile setting, so repeat it in any other Edge profile where the button appears. Hiding the button does not remove Copilot components from Edge or prevent an administrator from enforcing the feature again.

First, confirm that you changed the setting in the profile you are actively using. Edge can show different settings for a personal profile and a work or school profile. If the switch is missing, greyed out, or returns after you restart Edge, continue with the policy checks later in this guide rather than repeatedly changing the same toggle.

How do I turn off the Copilot new-tab page?
The AI-focused new-tab experience has its own switch. Removing the toolbar button alone will not necessarily change what appears when you open a new tab.
- In Edge, open Settings.
- Go to Copilot and AI. In some builds, this is reached through Appearance > Copilot and Sidebar.
- Find Copilot new tab page.
- Turn the experience off.
Open a fresh tab to verify the result. If the AI page still appears, the setting may be controlled by your organization. Microsoft documents that an organization can enable the Copilot new-tab experience through policy, in which case a local user switch may be unavailable or may not persist.
Why disabling the new-tab page is separate
Edge treats the new-tab experience, the toolbar button, and contextual grounding as separate features. A browser can therefore have a hidden toolbar button while still showing an AI new tab, or show neither while retaining Copilot context controls in Settings. Check each feature independently instead of assuming one switch covers all of them.

How do I stop Copilot reading my page, tabs, or browsing history?
Use Copilot’s context controls when your priority is preventing content access rather than merely hiding the icon. Microsoft says Copilot may use the current webpage, its title, open tabs, and browsing history depending on the prompt; these controls limit that contextual grounding.
Block context from the current web session
- Open the Copilot pane or entry point in Edge.
- Select the More menu (the three dots).
- Choose Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
With this option off, Copilot is prevented from using those web context clues for its responses. The setting addresses access to context; it does not, by itself, remove the toolbar button or change the new-tab page.
Turn off browser-content use in Copilot settings
Microsoft also exposes Allow Copilot to use browser content in the Copilot app settings. Switch it off to limit contextual grounding from browser content. This is a separate control from Show Copilot button on the toolbar, so the Copilot button can remain visible even when browser-content use is disabled.
What the context setting covers
Microsoft Support describes Copilot in Edge as a built-in assistant that can summarize webpages, videos, and PDFs. Depending on the prompt and enabled settings, the relevant context can include the page you are viewing, the page title, other open tabs, and browsing history. Turning off the context options removes that grounding path; it is not the same action as uninstalling a component or deleting browsing data.

Which Edge setting should I change?
Choose the control that matches the behavior you want to stop. Visibility, new-tab behavior, context access, and administrator enforcement are different layers.

The table explains why hiding a button may not satisfy a privacy requirement, and why turning off context may not stop an icon or new tab from appearing. For a complete change, apply the relevant user controls and then check whether policy is overriding them.
How can my company or school disable Copilot in Edge?
Managed-device controls are enforced by Edge policy rather than by an individual profile. If your organization wants Copilot Chat unavailable, its administrator can use the HubsSidebarEnabled policy; disabling it also blocks every Edge sidebar app, not only Copilot.
What HubsSidebarEnabled controls
HubsSidebarEnabled is the broadest control described here. When an administrator disables the policy, Copilot Chat in the Edge sidebar is disabled and the sidebar’s other apps are blocked automatically. Because it affects the entire sidebar, an administrator should treat it as a feature-wide change rather than a Copilot-only switch.

EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext governs enterprise Copilot use of webpage and PDF context. CopilotPageContext governs personal Copilot context when Copilot is used in an Edge work profile. These policies address what Copilot can ground responses on; they are distinct from the policy that disables the sidebar itself.
How to inspect policy status
- Type
edge://policyin the Edge address bar and press Enter. - Review the listed policies and their status. Look specifically for HubsSidebarEnabled, EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext, and CopilotPageContext.
- If a policy is listed as managed, note that a local Settings switch may be unavailable or may be overwritten after a restart or sign-in.
- Contact your IT administrator with the policy name and the behavior you are seeing.
Do not attempt to work around an organizational policy by editing unrelated browser files. The administrator must change an enforced policy for the setting to remain different across managed sessions.
Why does Copilot keep coming back after I turn it off?
A reverting setting usually indicates policy enforcement, a different Edge profile, or a version and availability difference rather than a failed click.

The setting is greyed out
A greyed-out switch is a strong sign that the browser is managed. Check edge://policy and ask IT which policy controls the feature. On a personal computer, confirm that Edge is not signed into a work or school profile before escalating.
The setting changes but returns after restart
Check whether the same profile is active after restart, then inspect edge://policy. If an organization enables the feature, the policy can reapply the setting. Capture the policy name and the exact setting path before contacting support so the administrator can identify the source quickly.
The button is gone but an AI new tab remains
Return to Copilot and AI > Copilot new tab page and disable that experience separately. The toolbar visibility switch does not govern the new-tab page.
The new tab is normal but Copilot can still use page context
Open the Copilot controls and turn off both Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web and, where shown, Allow Copilot to use browser content. These are privacy and grounding controls, not appearance controls.
The Copilot menu is missing entirely
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to a disabled sidebar, policy settings, an outdated Edge version, or account and regional availability as possible causes. Check edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebar to see whether the sidebar and Copilot area are available, then open edge://settings/help to check for an Edge update. If the feature still differs from another computer, compare the signed-in account, profile type, and regional availability.

Version differences can change menu names and which Copilot controls are shown. Open edge://settings/help; Edge checks its installed version and displays available updates there.
- Enter
edge://settings/helpin the address bar. - Allow the page to complete its update check.
- Restart Edge if it installs an update.
- Revisit Appearance > Copilot and Sidebar or Copilot and AI and look for the controls again.
Updating can expose a newer label or path, but it does not override an administrator policy. If the control remains absent after updating, inspect policy and account conditions instead of assuming the feature is broken.

Is Copilot Mode the same as Copilot in the sidebar?
No. Microsoft describes Copilot Mode as a separate Edge feature from Copilot in the sidepane and from contextual grounding. Its controls and policies are therefore independent.
Microsoft states that Copilot Mode is off by default and under the user’s control. Turning Copilot Mode off does not guarantee that the sidebar Copilot button, the Copilot new-tab page, or browser-context access is disabled; check those controls separately when you want all AI entry points and context paths addressed.

Use a short verification sequence so each behavior is tested independently.
- Hide the button through Settings > Appearance > Copilot and Sidebar (or Copilot and AI) and turn off Show Copilot button on the toolbar.
- Disable Copilot new tab page in the same Copilot settings area.
- Open Copilot’s More menu and turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
- In Copilot app settings, turn off Allow Copilot to use browser content if that option is present.
- Open a new tab, inspect the toolbar, and visit a normal webpage to confirm that the unwanted behavior has stopped.
This sequence separates appearance from data-access decisions. You can leave a visible button while blocking context, or hide the button while allowing context, depending on your needs; the controls do not imply one another.
What is the best sequence for a managed work or school device?
Start with policy identification rather than repeated local changes. A managed device can enforce Copilot behavior for every sign-in or profile.
- Open
edge://policyand record the policies related to Copilot and the sidebar. - Check
edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebarto see whether the sidebar is disabled or the Copilot controls are unavailable. - Check
edge://settings/helpso the administrator knows which Edge version is installed. - Tell IT whether the issue is a toolbar button, an AI new tab, webpage or PDF context, or all sidebar apps.
- Ask the administrator to review HubsSidebarEnabled, EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext, or CopilotPageContext, as appropriate.
Providing the exact symptom prevents an overbroad change. For example, disabling the sidebar to stop Copilot also blocks other sidebar applications, while a context policy can restrict webpage or PDF grounding without removing the sidebar.
How do I choose between hiding Copilot and blocking context?
Choose based on the risk or interruption you are trying to remove.

- Accidental launches: hide Show Copilot button on the toolbar.
- AI content on every new tab: disable Copilot new tab page.
- Page, tab, title, or history context: turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
- Browser-content grounding: turn off Allow Copilot to use browser content.
- Organization-wide sidebar removal: have IT disable HubsSidebarEnabled, understanding that all Edge sidebar apps are affected.
- Enterprise webpage or PDF context: ask IT to review EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext.
- Personal Copilot context in a work profile: ask IT to review CopilotPageContext.
These choices also differ in persistence. A local switch applies to the profile where you set it; a managed policy can reapply across restarts, sign-ins, or multiple users on the device.
What should I do if controls differ between two computers?
Compare the Edge version, signed-in account, profile type, region, and policy state before assuming one installation is malfunctioning. Microsoft notes that differences in sidebar state, policy settings, outdated software, regional availability, and account availability can all change the controls shown.
- On each computer, open
edge://settings/helpand compare the installed Edge version. - Confirm whether each browser uses a personal profile or a work or school profile.
- Open
edge://policyon both devices and note any managed entries. - Open
edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebarand compare whether the sidebar is enabled. - Apply the same user-level settings only after the profile and policy conditions match.
A different menu label alone does not prove that a feature is missing. Microsoft uses both Copilot and Sidebar and Copilot and AI labels, and availability can vary by account or region.
What should I expect after making the changes?
After a successful personal configuration, the toolbar no longer shows the Copilot button, new tabs use the regular experience, and Copilot’s context options are off if you changed them. Test each result separately because one successful change does not confirm the others.
On a managed device, the expected result depends on the policy selected by IT. Disabling HubsSidebarEnabled removes Copilot Chat and the entire Edge sidebar, while context policies can leave the interface in place but restrict webpage, PDF, or work-profile context. If the result conflicts with the stated policy, record the exact Edge version, profile, policy status, and screen behavior for your administrator.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will hiding the Copilot button affect my other Edge profiles?
No. The toolbar switch is set in the active Edge profile. Repeat the change in each personal, work, or school profile where you do not want the button; an administrator policy can instead apply across managed profiles.
Can my employer force the Copilot new-tab page back on?
Yes. Microsoft documents that an organization can enable the Copilot new-tab experience through policy. If the local switch is unavailable or repeatedly reverts, only the administrator can change the enforced setting.

Does disabling the sidebar remove non-Copilot tools too?
Yes. Disabling the HubsSidebarEnabled policy disables Copilot Chat and automatically blocks all Edge sidebar apps. IT should use that broad policy only when removing the entire sidebar is acceptable.
Why do I see ‘Copilot and AI’ instead of ‘Copilot and Sidebar’?
Microsoft uses different labels in different Edge builds. An outdated version, disabled sidebar, account or regional availability, and organizational policy can also change which controls appear.
