Use three separate control surfaces: configure age and communication limits in the Switch 2’s System Settings > Parental Controls, use the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for playtime, bedtime and activity reports, and set eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions in the supervising adult’s Nintendo Account. A console PIN or a playtime limit by itself does not block purchases.
What each parental-control setting actually controls
Switch 2 parental controls are not one master switch. Nintendo divides the important settings between the console, the mobile app and the supervising adult’s Nintendo Account. Choosing the right surface prevents a common mistake: setting a PIN or a time limit and assuming that game purchases are now blocked.

| Switch 2 System Settings | Software age ratings, communication restrictions and other restrictions available directly on the console; creating the parental-controls PIN | No phone is required, but app-only playtime and activity features are not available here. |
| Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app | Daily playtime, bedtime, activity viewing, selected-game exceptions and additional Switch 2 controls | Requires a supported iPhone or Android device and a Nintendo Account belonging to a parent or guardian aged 18 or older. |
| Parent or guardian Nintendo Account settings | Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions, eShop viewing restrictions, friend suggestions and third-party information-sharing choices | These account controls are separate from both the console PIN and the app’s playtime settings. |
Most Switch 2 console restrictions apply to the system rather than being independently tailored to every user. If children of different ages share one console, choose settings that are appropriate for the youngest player, then use the app’s per-user activity view and any available game exceptions to handle legitimate differences.

What you need before starting
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with access to System Settings.
- For app-based controls, a supported iPhone running iOS 16.0 or newer or an Android device running Android 8.0 or newer.
- A Nintendo Account for the parent or guardian who will supervise the console. Nintendo’s requirements specify that this adult must be at least 18.
- A few minutes to choose a private four- to eight-digit parental-controls PIN if you configure restrictions on the console.
The Parental Controls app is free. The setup described here does not require an accessory, replacement part, repair tool or printed manual. If you do not have a smart device, you can still configure the console-supported restrictions and create a PIN; you simply will not have the app’s playtime and activity functions.

Set up basic restrictions directly on Switch 2 without a phone
This route is useful when you want age-rating and communication limits immediately or cannot use a supported smart device.
- On the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Open Parental Controls.
- Choose the option to continue without linking the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.
- Select the console-supported restrictions you want, such as software age ratings and communication controls. Read each setting’s description before confirming it because these restrictions affect the console as a system.
- Save the choices when the console asks you to confirm them.
- Create a four- to eight-digit PIN, then enter it again to confirm.
The PIN authorizes changes to parental-control restrictions and some related system settings. Keep it private and do not use a number that a child can easily guess. Anyone who knows the PIN can change the restrictions, so sharing it defeats the purpose of the setup.
What this offline setup does not do
Setting the PIN and software restrictions does not create a daily playtime schedule, bedtime, activity report or purchase block. Those functions belong to the app or the supervising Nintendo Account. If you later decide that you need app features, follow the console’s instructions to link the app rather than creating a second, conflicting setup.
Use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for playtime
The app is the control surface for scheduled play. It can show activity, apply a daily limit, add a bedtime and, where appropriate, allow an individually selected game to ignore restrictions.
Install and link the app
- Install the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on a compatible iPhone or Android device.
- Sign in with the supervising parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account. The account holder must be 18 or older.
- From the app’s Parental Controls area, start the process to link the Switch 2.
- Follow the on-screen instructions on both the phone and console until the system confirms that they are linked.
Menu wording can change with a system or app update, and some choices can vary by region or account type. If a label is different from the one described above, use Nintendo’s current support instructions and the matching Parental Controls section rather than selecting an unrelated account or user menu.
Set a daily playtime limit
- Open the linked console in the app’s Parental Controls area.
- Choose the daily playtime setting.
- Set the number of hours or minutes allowed for each day.
- Adjust individual days if your family schedule needs different limits on school days, weekends or holidays.
- Save the schedule and leave the console connected as required for the app to apply changes.
Nintendo allows the limit to vary by day, so a single schedule does not have to fit every day of the week. The app can also show activity so you can check how the console is being used instead of relying only on a child’s estimate.
Choose what happens when time runs out
Turn on Suspend Play When Time’s Up when you want software to stop at the end of the allowance. With it off, the Switch 2 displays a notification when the limit is reached, but play can continue. Suspension is therefore the enforcement option; a notification is a reminder rather than a hard stop.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Add a bedtime
Set a bedtime in the same Parental Controls area when you want play to end at a particular time of night. When both a daily playtime limit and a bedtime are set, the earlier one takes effect. For example, if the remaining daily allowance would end at 9:30 p.m. but bedtime is 9:00 p.m., the bedtime is the effective cutoff.
Allow a particular game to ignore restrictions
The app supports individually selected games that can ignore restrictions. Use this only for a title you have evaluated and deliberately approved; it does not turn off every console restriction or authorize purchases. The exception is a targeted playtime choice, not a replacement for reviewing age ratings, communication settings or account permissions.

Block game and downloadable-content purchases separately
Purchase controls are managed through the supervising adult’s Nintendo Account. They are not controlled by the console’s four- to eight-digit PIN and are not created by setting a playtime schedule.
- Sign in to the parent or guardian Nintendo Account that supervises the child or supervised account.
- Open the account’s settings and locate the restrictions for Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store purchases.
- Apply the purchase restriction to the relevant child or supervised account.
- Review the related eShop viewing and account options, then save the changes.
- Test the arrangement with the child’s account before treating it as complete. Confirm that a purchase cannot be authorized without the adult’s approval and that the adult can still make intended purchases from the correct account.
Nintendo places purchase restrictions, eShop viewing restrictions, friend suggestions and third-party information-sharing choices in Nintendo Account settings rather than in the console or mobile app. Keep the supervising account’s sign-in details private. A child who can use the adult’s account directly may be able to bypass restrictions that were correctly configured on the child account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Phone and tablet in-app purchases
If the concern is an in-app purchase made in a game or service on a phone or tablet, Nintendo says to use that device’s own parental-control and purchase settings. The Switch 2 account restriction does not replace the operating system’s controls for purchases made outside the console.
Configure communication and age restrictions with shared consoles in mind
Software age ratings and communication limits answer different safety questions. Age-rating controls restrict which software can be used under the console’s parental-control rules. Communication controls address interactions and related online functions. Select both when your concern includes unsuitable content and contact with other players.
Because most console parental controls apply system-wide, a setting chosen for one child can affect every player on that Switch 2. There is no assumption in Nintendo’s guidance that each user receives a completely separate console-wide rule set. Start with the youngest player’s needs, then use account-level settings and carefully chosen app exceptions where they are available.
Review exceptions before allowing them
- Check the game’s age rating and the type of online communication it enables.
- Decide whether the exception applies to playtime only or whether another setting still needs to remain restricted.
- Explain to the child which behavior is allowed and what remains off-limits.
- Recheck the exception after a major game, console or app update.
Verify the setup before handing over the console
A short verification prevents a setting from appearing to work while leaving a purchase or communication path open.
- Use the child or supervised account and try to open software above the selected age range. Confirm that the restriction appears.
- Check a communication-related function that should be restricted and verify that the expected limitation is shown.
- Start a game, allow the scheduled time to run down, and observe whether Suspend Play When Time’s Up stops the software or whether the console merely displays a notification, depending on your choice.
- Check the app’s activity view and confirm that the expected user and play session appear.
- Attempt a Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store purchase from the supervised account. Confirm that the account-level restriction requires the adult’s authorization.
- If the test involves a phone or tablet purchase, test that device’s own restrictions separately.
- Write down the schedule and the adult account used for supervision, but do not write the private PIN where a child can find it.
Two-parent and multi-device monitoring
Nintendo’s app update history lists version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026. That version adds shared parental controls, allowing two parents or guardians to monitor activity and set daily playtime limits from their respective devices. This is useful when supervision is shared between households or when one adult is not always carrying the primary phone.
Shared access does not merge the purchase-control surface with the app. Each adult should understand which person’s Nintendo Account supervises the child account and who can change purchase restrictions. Agree on one schedule before making edits from two devices so that a later change does not surprise the child.
App versions and operating-system requirements can change. Nintendo currently lists iOS 16.0 or newer and Android 8.0 or newer, but check the current support information before installing after a long gap or changing phones.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
The app will not link to the Switch 2
- Confirm that the phone meets the current iOS or Android requirement and that the app is updated.
- Make sure you are signed in with the intended adult Nintendo Account, not a child or supervised account.
- Return to the console’s System Settings > Parental Controls area and follow the linking instructions shown there.
- If the console was configured without the app, use the displayed option for linking rather than starting a second independent configuration.
Play continues after the limit
Check whether Suspend Play When Time’s Up is enabled. When it is disabled, the notification is expected and the child can continue. Also check whether the current game was individually allowed to ignore restrictions.
The schedule ends earlier than expected
Look at both controls: the daily allowance and bedtime. The earlier of the two takes effect. Review the day-specific schedule as well; Nintendo allows different limits on different days.
A child can still buy something
Recheck the supervising Nintendo Account’s eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions. A console PIN, age-rating restriction and playtime schedule do not substitute for this account-level setting. If the purchase occurred on a phone or tablet, inspect that device’s own purchase controls instead.
One child’s restriction affects another
This is consistent with Nintendo’s system-wide behavior for most console parental controls. Choose a baseline appropriate for the youngest player and use the app’s activity review or a carefully selected game exception for older players where appropriate.
The menus do not match these instructions
Labels can differ by region, account arrangement and software update. Stay within the console’s Parental Controls area, the app’s Parental Controls area or the supervising Nintendo Account settings. Use Nintendo’s current support instructions when an option has moved or a requirement has changed.
A practical setup for a family sharing one Switch 2
For a young child
Start with the youngest appropriate software age setting, restrict communication, create a private PIN, use the app to set a daily limit and bedtime, and turn on suspension if a hard stop is required. Apply purchase restrictions to the child’s supervised Nintendo Account and verify them with a test account session.
For siblings with different ages
Keep the system-wide baseline suitable for the younger sibling. Use the app to review activity and allow only specific older-child games to ignore the relevant restriction. Do not give the older child the PIN or the adult account credentials.
For two guardians
Use shared parental controls in app version 2.6.0 or later where supported, agree on the schedule and keep purchase restrictions under the supervising adult accounts. Both adults should know that changing playtime in the app does not change eShop purchase permissions.
What to remember about the three-part setup
- Console: age ratings, communication and the PIN; no smart device required.
- App: daily playtime, bedtime, activity review and selected-game exceptions; requires a supported phone and an adult account.
- Nintendo Account: eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions and related account-level controls.
- Phone or tablet: its own settings are required for in-app purchases made on that device.
- Shared system: assume most console restrictions affect everyone and set the baseline for the youngest player.
Review these settings after a console, app or operating-system update, after adding a new player, and whenever a child moves from supervised to independent account use. The controls are most effective when the PIN, adult account credentials and phone-level purchase settings are kept separate from the child’s access.
