If you forgot your Yahoo password, use Yahoo’s official Sign-in Helper. Enter your Yahoo ID, recovery email address, or recovery phone number, complete the verification method Yahoo offers, and create a new password. Yahoo resets the password; it does not normally reveal the old one.

If you cannot access any recovery or alternative sign-in method, try every option Yahoo displays and then use Yahoo Help Central to check whether Contact Us is available for your product and region. There is no guaranteed way to bypass Yahoo’s identity verification.

Use this official recovery address: https://login.yahoo.com/forgot. Type it directly into your browser or open it through Yahoo Help Central. Confirm that the page is on a yahoo.com domain before entering a password, verification code, or other private information.

Choose the recovery route that fits your situation

Your situation Best next step Important limitation
Your browser or password manager may have saved the password Check the saved-password manager on your own trusted device This works only if the password was previously saved
You forgot the password but can use the recovery phone or email Use the Sign-in Helper Yahoo must offer and accept that verification method
You are still signed in to Yahoo Mail or another Yahoo app Change the password from the app’s security settings Menu labels vary by app and version
Account Key is enabled Approve the Yahoo app sign-in prompt, then disable Account Key if you want password sign-in This applies to accounts that already have Account Key enabled
You have a Yahoo passkey Use the passkey to sign in, then create a password from Account Security The passkey must be available on the device or passkey manager where it was created
You forgot the Yahoo ID too Use the Sign-in Helper with a recovery item You need access to one of the recovery methods Yahoo accepts
You lost the recovery phone and email Try all alternatives Yahoo offers, then check official Contact Us availability Yahoo may be unable to recover the account without a usable verification method
You think someone changed the password Use the Sign-in Helper immediately, then secure the account after recovery Changing the password alone may not remove app passwords, forwarding rules, or connected devices
Yahoo Mail works in a browser but not in Outlook, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird Reauthenticate the mail app or use a Yahoo app password if required A third-party app password can remain active after the main password changes
The account has been unused for years Attempt recovery, but distinguish account access from mailbox-content recovery Old messages and settings may already have been permanently deleted

Before resetting: check whether your device saved the password

People often search for password recovery when the old password is still stored in a browser, operating-system password manager, or third-party password manager. This is an optional first step—not a substitute for Yahoo’s recovery process.

Inspect saved passwords only on your own trusted device. Never send a saved password to someone claiming to be Yahoo support.

Firefox on a desktop

  1. Open Firefox and choose Menu → Logins and Passwords.
  2. Search for Yahoo and select the saved entry.
  3. Reveal or copy the password. Firefox may require device authentication or the Firefox Primary Password.

See Mozilla’s current Firefox Password Manager instructions if the labels differ.

Passwords saved by Apple

On macOS Sequoia, open the Passwords app. On macOS Sonoma or earlier, use System Settings → Passwords, or in Safari use Safari → Settings → Passwords. Authenticate with Touch ID or your Mac password. Apple documents the current options in its Passwords and saved passkeys guide.

Chrome, Edge, iPhone, Android, and third-party password managers use different menus by version and device. Open that product’s built-in password manager rather than relying on a universal menu path. Yahoo also explains how to check browser autofill settings.

Reset a forgotten Yahoo password with Sign-in Helper

This is the normal recovery procedure for Yahoo Mail and other Yahoo services.

  1. Open Yahoo Sign-in Helper.
  2. Enter the Yahoo ID, recovery email address, recovery phone number, or other recovery item the page accepts.
  3. If you have the recovery phone but not the email, select Use recovery phone number when that option appears.
  4. Select Next.
  5. Choose one of the verification methods Yahoo offers. Depending on your account, this may be a text message, alternate email, Yahoo app approval, passkey, emergency recovery code, or another sign-in method.
  6. Retrieve the code or follow the verification link. Do not share it with another person.
  7. When Yahoo prompts you to do so, create a new password.
  8. Sign in again and review your recovery and security settings.

The exact screens and button labels can vary by region, browser, account state, and the risk check Yahoo applies. If Yahoo offers a recovery email, a phone number is not inherently required. Conversely, having a Yahoo ID alone does not guarantee that the account can be recovered.

Change the password while you are still signed in

If Yahoo Mail is open on your phone, changing the password from the signed-in app may be easier than starting recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tap your profile icon.
  2. In Yahoo Mail, tap Manage Accounts when shown. Other Yahoo apps may proceed directly to the next step.
  3. Tap Account Info. In Yahoo Mail, the label may instead be Account.
  4. Tap Security.
  5. Scroll to Change password.
  6. Enter the new password and tap Continue.

Yahoo’s mobile-app labels differ between Yahoo Mail and other Yahoo apps. If the option is not available in the app, use a mobile browser and open the Sign-in Helper or Yahoo Account Security.

If Account Key is enabled

Account Key lets an existing Yahoo user approve a sign-in from the Yahoo mobile app instead of entering a password. Yahoo no longer allows Account Key to be set up on every account, but accounts that already use it can continue to sign in with it.

Approve the Account Key prompt if it appears. After signing in, you can return to password-based sign-in:

  • On the web: open Yahoo Account Security, choose Turn off Account Key, and confirm.
  • In the mobile app: open the profile or menu, choose Account Key → Manage Account Key → Disable Account Key.

If the prompt does not arrive, enable notifications for the Yahoo app, choose Resend on the sign-in page, and try Use text or email to sign in or Try another way to sign in. If Yahoo displays an Uh-oh error because the daily text-message limit was exceeded, Yahoo says to wait 24 hours before trying again through the Yahoo Mail app. More troubleshooting is available in Yahoo’s Account Key guidance.

If you have a Yahoo passkey

A passkey can sign you in with the device’s unlock code, fingerprint, or face recognition instead of a password. Yahoo says passkeys are stored locally on the device where they were created and are not available for every Yahoo account or desktop device.

If an existing passkey works, use it to sign in. Then open Yahoo Account Security, choose Password, and create a new password. This is a practical route from Yahoo’s documented passwordless sign-in and signed-in password-change features, although Yahoo does not describe it as a separate passkey-recovery form. See Yahoo’s passkey sign-in instructions.

If you forgot your Yahoo ID as well

The Sign-in Helper can help locate a forgotten Yahoo ID. Open Sign-in Helper, enter one of the recovery items associated with the account, and follow the prompts. Yahoo’s account-access instructions cover the forgotten-ID path.

Use the full email address when appropriate. This is especially important for accounts created with a non-Yahoo address and for addresses ending in ymail.com or rocketmail.com; entering only the part before the @ may not identify the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accounts created with Google or Facebook email addresses

For an older Yahoo account whose Yahoo ID is a Google or Facebook email address:

  1. Open the Sign-in Helper.
  2. Enter the Google or Facebook email address in the Yahoo ID field.
  3. Select Continue.
  4. Follow the recovery instructions Yahoo displays.
  5. After access is restored, create a new Yahoo password.

See Yahoo’s instructions for Yahoo accounts created with Google or Facebook email addresses.

If you no longer have the recovery phone or email

Start with the Sign-in Helper anyway. Enter the Yahoo ID, recovery email, or recovery phone number associated with the account and examine every method Yahoo offers. Possible alternatives include:

  • A different alternate email address.
  • Approval in a Yahoo mobile app where you are still signed in.
  • An existing passkey.
  • Account Key approval.
  • Old recovery information still shown after a recent security change.
  • An emergency recovery code associated with certain two-step-verification methods.

If Yahoo offers no method you can use, open Yahoo Help Central and select Contact Us if that option is available for your product, issue, region, and account. Yahoo Customer Care may be able to assist with some secondary-verification situations, but eligibility and availability vary. An agent is not guaranteed to override the verification process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yahoo’s guidance is situation-dependent: some accounts with inaccessible recovery information may be unrecoverable, while Customer Care may help in certain eligible cases. Do not trust websites promising a universal no-phone workaround or a secret recovery form. If Yahoo confirms that no usable recovery method exists, the account may be permanently inaccessible.

Can Yahoo recover an account without a phone number?

Yes—if Yahoo accepts another valid method, such as a recovery email, Yahoo app approval, passkey, Account Key, or another method shown by the Sign-in Helper. A phone number is not a universal requirement.

However, Yahoo should not be expected to recover an account solely from a name, an old password, date of birth, billing information, or old security-question answers. Yahoo’s current security guidance says security questions are no longer used for account security.

If verification codes or links do not arrive

Use Yahoo’s verification-code and link troubleshooting:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use Resend within the first five minutes if the code has not arrived.
  • Confirm that the phone number or alternate email shown by Yahoo is correct.
  • SMS codes require a mobile number. A landline cannot receive an SMS code.
  • Check the alternate email account’s spam or junk folder.
  • Confirm that the alternate email account still exists and can receive messages.
  • Check whether the email provider or internet service provider is blocking Yahoo messages.
  • If a link has expired, request a new link rather than repeatedly opening the old one.

Avoid requesting many codes in quick succession. Multiple messages can make it unclear which code is current, and repeated recovery attempts may trigger additional verification.

If the recovery email is the same Yahoo mailbox you are trying to recover, it is not useful while you cannot access that mailbox. Choose another recovery method shown by Yahoo.

If Yahoo says Invalid ID or Password

Check these common causes before concluding that the account was hacked:

  • Turn off Caps Lock and check Num Lock.
  • Type the password manually once. Autofill may be supplying an old password.
  • Confirm that you are using the correct Yahoo ID, including the full address for non-Yahoo, Ymail, and Rocketmail accounts.
  • If you recently changed the password, update the saved password in your browser, phone, password manager, or mail app.
  • Try another supported browser, preferably on a familiar device and normal network.
  • If you still cannot sign in, stop guessing and use the Sign-in Helper.

An invalid-password message does not by itself prove that someone changed your password. Use Yahoo’s sign-in guidance and recovery process to distinguish an ID, autofill, browser, or account-security problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Yahoo temporarily locks the account

Yahoo may temporarily lock an account after too many unsuccessful sign-in attempts. Yahoo says the lock normally clears automatically after 12 hours, while the Sign-in Helper may restore access sooner.

Do not keep guessing passwords. Repeated failures can prolong the challenge. Yahoo may also request extra verification because of:

  • A password it considers risky.
  • A hidden or constantly changing IP address.
  • Sign-in attempts from different geographic locations in a short period.
  • A VPN or proxy.
  • An unfamiliar browser or device.
  • Private or incognito browsing.
  • Cleared cookies or browser data.
  • Many incorrect password attempts.

Use a familiar device and ordinary network where possible, turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily, and use the Sign-in Helper instead of repeatedly attempting passwords. Yahoo’s sign-in troubleshooting page covers account locks and related problems.

If the sign-in page keeps looping or reloading

A sign-in loop can be a cookie, browser, or risk-verification problem rather than a wrong password. Try Yahoo’s sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the sign-in page, select Not you?
  2. Enter the Yahoo ID and password again.
  3. If the loop continues, clear the browser cookies.
  4. Quit and restart the browser.
  5. Try another supported browser.
  6. Try another Yahoo sign-in page, such as the primary Yahoo sign-in page or Yahoo Mail sign-in page.

Use the Sign-in Helper if the loop persists. Avoid repeatedly submitting the same credentials while Yahoo is applying a security challenge.

If you think someone changed your password

Use the Sign-in Helper immediately. If Yahoo shows an old recovery phone number or email address, try it if you still control it. Old recovery information can remain visible after a recent legitimate change, but it can also help when someone changed the recovery choices without permission; its appearance alone does not prove an account takeover.

After you regain access, treat the account as potentially compromised until you complete this checklist:

  1. Change the password to a new, unique password that was not used elsewhere.
  2. Review current sign-ins, recent activity, and account changes. Sign out unfamiliar devices or sessions.
  3. Check recovery information. Remove unknown phone numbers and email addresses and restore your own current details.
  4. Review passkeys and connected devices. Remove anything you do not recognize.
  5. Delete unrecognized app passwords. App passwords can continue working after the main password is changed.
  6. Inspect Yahoo Mail settings. Check filters, forwarding addresses, reply-to addresses, send-only addresses, vacation responses, blocked addresses, signatures, and sending names.
  7. Look for evidence of misuse, such as missing mail, unexpected spam sent to contacts, unfamiliar sign-ins, or altered account information.
  8. Enable two-step verification and add a passkey where Yahoo makes it available.
  9. Change the password anywhere it was reused. An attacker may try the exposed password on other services.

Yahoo’s guidance on a compromised account and unusual account activity explains these checks in more detail.

If Yahoo Mail works in a browser but not in another mail app

After a password reset, webmail or the official Yahoo app may work while Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or another third-party client stops syncing. That does not necessarily mean the reset failed.

Some older or third-party mail apps do not use Yahoo’s branded sign-in page. When two-step verification or Account Key is enabled, they may require a separate Yahoo app password—a randomly generated code intended for that app.

  1. Open the mail app and reauthenticate the Yahoo account if it provides that option.
  2. If the app cannot use Yahoo’s normal sign-in page, create an app password in Yahoo Account Security and enter it in the mail app instead of the main password.
  3. If necessary, remove and re-add the Yahoo account in the third-party app.
  4. Delete old or unrecognized app passwords from Yahoo Account Security.

App passwords may remain active even after the main Yahoo password changes, so resetting the main password does not necessarily revoke every third-party connection. See Yahoo’s app-password instructions and its guide to reauthenticating third-party mail apps.

Old, inactive, or deleted Yahoo accounts

Being able to reclaim an account is not the same as restoring its old mailbox contents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inactive mailbox

Yahoo says that after 12 months or more without use, mailbox contents, folders, contacts, and settings may be permanently deleted. Signing in may recover access to the email account, but it cannot restore content that Yahoo has already deleted. See Yahoo’s inactive mailbox policy.

Deleted or deactivated account

Yahoo says an account may be deleted after 24 months without a sign-in, depending on account history and policy. Accounts can also be deleted because the user requested closure or because of a Terms of Service issue. The old Yahoo ID may not become available again. These policies can differ for legacy accounts, account types, and regions, so treat the published time frames as current policy—not a guarantee for every old account.

User-requested closure

For a Yahoo account closed by its owner, Yahoo generally allows reactivation by signing in within 30 days in the United States. Longer hold periods apply in certain regions. After the applicable reactivation period, recovery may be impossible. See Yahoo’s account-closure guidance and deactivation and deletion policy.

Create a strong replacement password

Yahoo recommends a password of at least 12 unique characters. Use a memorable passphrase or a password-manager-generated password. Do not use your name, Yahoo ID, birthday, obvious words, keyboard sequences, or repeated characters, and do not reuse the password on another site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yahoo’s public guidance emphasizes length, uniqueness, and unpredictability. Do not assume that every Yahoo account universally requires a particular combination of uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols unless the live reset form displays that requirement.

Secure the account after recovery

  • Confirm that your recovery mobile number and alternate email address are current and accessible.
  • Enable two-step verification where available.
  • Add a passkey on a device you control if Yahoo offers the option.
  • Review recent activity, current sign-ins, connected devices, and security changes.
  • Remove unknown app passwords and third-party connections.
  • Store the new password in a reputable password manager rather than relying on browser autofill alone.
  • Keep emergency recovery codes in a secure offline location if your two-step-verification method provides them.

Avoid Yahoo password-recovery scams

Fake Yahoo support pages and fake technicians are a major risk when someone is locked out. Use only Yahoo pages reached by typing the address yourself or through Yahoo Help Central. The Sign-in Helper should use the yahoo.com domain, including login.yahoo.com.

  • Do not enter your Yahoo password or verification code on a third-party support site.
  • Do not give a caller or email sender a verification code.
  • Do not pay an unsolicited person who claims to be a Yahoo technician.
  • Do not trust phone numbers found in random search results, advertisements, forums, or pop-ups.
  • Do not install remote-control software at the request of supposed support.

Yahoo warns that it does not request passwords through unsolicited emails or phone calls. Its legitimate Yahoo communications guidance and official customer-support page explain how to avoid support scams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recover my Yahoo password without a phone number?

Yes, if Yahoo offers another valid method, such as a recovery email, Yahoo app approval, Account Key, passkey, emergency recovery code, or another alternative sign-in method. If no accessible recovery method is available, Yahoo may not be able to recover the account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Yahoo show me my old forgotten password?

Normally no. Yahoo’s official process resets the password. The old password may be visible only if it was previously saved on your own browser, operating-system password manager, or third-party password manager.

How long does a Yahoo account lock last?

Yahoo says an automatic lock normally clears after 12 hours, although the Sign-in Helper may restore access sooner. Stop repeatedly guessing passwords because additional attempts can trigger more verification.

Will changing my Yahoo password sign out every mail app?

Do not assume that it will. Official Yahoo and browser sessions may request the new password, while third-party mail apps may require reauthentication or a separate app password. Existing app passwords may remain active until individually deleted.

Can old Yahoo security questions recover my account?

No. Yahoo’s current security guidance says security questions are no longer used for account security. Use the Sign-in Helper and the recovery methods it offers instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start at Yahoo Sign-in Helper, use any recovery or passwordless method you can access, and reset—not reveal—the forgotten password. If Yahoo offers no usable verification method, official support may help only in some eligible situations; there is no guaranteed bypass. After recovery, inspect the account for unauthorized changes, secure every mail app, and update your recovery information.
