Step 1: Download Screencast-O-Matic

The first step in this guide is to install Screencast-O-Matic.

  • Open Screencast-O-Matic.com from a browser on your PC.
  • When the page opens, click the Start recording for free link.

  • Then, on the Screen Recorder page, click Launch Free Recorder.

  • Save the WebLaunchRecorder.exe file to a folder on your computer.
You have just downloaded the free version of Screencast-O-Matic. It offers you up to 15 minutes of continous recording. If you want more recording time, purchase a premium version.

Step 2: Record Video with Screencast-O-Matic

  • Open the folder you saved the Screencast-O-Matic recorder file and double-click the file.

  • The video recorder will launch. When it launches, the recording screen will not cover your screen.
  • To expand the recording screen to cover your screen, use the highlighted points in the image below to drag the recording screen to cover parts of your screen you want to record.
The default recording for Screencast-O-Matic is Screen. But it also has an option to record with the Webcam on your computer or both Screen and Webcam. More on this later.

  • The first thing to do is to test your microphone. To check that your mic is working, on the bottom left of the screen, click Narration.
If the Record Settings screen is not displayed, click the Settings icon (looks like a gear). Then, click Narration.

  • On the Narration screen, select a microphone.

  • Once you have confirmed that your microphone is working, the next step is to select your recording option. If you just want to record your screen, proceed to the next step.
  • Otherwise, to record only with the Webcam on your PC, select Webcam. But if you want to record your screen and record your face via the Webcam, select Both.

  • Now, it is time to start recording! To record video on Windows 10, on the bottom left of the screen, click Rec.

  • When you click Rec, the recorder will display a 3, 2, 1 count-down and start recording.
  • You can pause the recording at any time by clicking the pause button – bottom left of the recorder.
  • To resume the same recording session, click the Record icon.
  • But if you have finished recording, open the option to save your video by clicking the Done button – see the second image below.

  • When you click the Done button, 2 options will be displayed. To edit your video, click Edit Video. Otherwise, to save the video, click Save / Upload.
  • Finally, on the What do you want to do with this recording screen, click Save As Video File.
  • Then, click the default file name.
  • Give the file a descriptive name.
  • To select a folder to save the video file, click Browse. The default file save location will open. To select this folder, click OK
  • Finally, to save the video file, on the bottom right of the video recorder, click Publish.
  • Then, wait for the video file to be published to the selected folder.
  • Finally, when the Publish confirmation screen is displayed, select an option. Your video is ready!
