Use the handoff that matches the data: build options for user-selected configuration, run-step arguments for tool parameters, and declared outputs for files produced by one step and consumed by another. When the consumer needs generated Zig code, expose that output as a module dependency. In every case, make the producer-consumer relationship explicit in the build graph rather than relying on execution order.

Choose the right handoff

Zig’s build system represents work as a directed acyclic graph. Independent steps can run concurrently, so a required order must be expressed by a dependency or by wiring a produced value into the consumer. The official Build System guide demonstrates these patterns.

What you need to pass Use Typical consumer
A user-selected setting or build configuration b.option and the Options mechanism Build script or compiled Zig code
Arguments for an executed tool Arguments on its run step Generator or other process
A file produced by a step A declared output, such as one represented by addOutputFileArg, passed as a LazyPath Install step or later build step
Generated Zig source that downstream code imports A module dependency using the generated source Compiled Zig module
Content or copied files created by the build script WriteFiles and its generated-file paths Later step that consumes those files

Pass configuration into build logic and Zig code

Read a user setting in build.zig

Use b.option when a person invoking the build should be able to select a value, for example through a -D build option. The build script can read that choice and use it to configure the graph or build artifacts. This is different from a file produced during the build: it is an input choice, not an output artifact.

Expose configuration to compiled Zig code

If project source code also needs the value, use the build system’s Options mechanism to surface the build-script value to Zig code. The official guide presents Options as the way to pass build-script values into project code. The language documentation also describes build configuration being surfaced as comptime values; its master documentation is rolling, so compare the details with the documentation for the compiler version you use.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pass arguments to an executed tool

When a build step runs a generator or another executable, give that process its parameters as run-step command-line arguments. This is appropriate for values such as an input path, a mode, or a requested output location. The guide’s generator pattern passes input and output paths as arguments; for an output file, it also declares the output so the build graph can track it.

Do not confuse a process argument with a build dependency. An argument tells the process what to do; graph wiring tells Zig what work must complete first and which output the next step consumes.

Pass a generated file to a later step

Declare the producer’s output

Represent a generated file as an output of the producing step. The guide demonstrates addOutputFileArg, which supplies an output path to the tool and returns a path value for later use. Treat that result as a LazyPath and pass it directly to the consumer instead of making the consumer guess a filename in a fixed directory.

Connect the consumer

Pass the output path to the later step through the API that accepts it, such as an install step or another tool’s arguments. This connection makes the data flow visible to the build graph and establishes the producer-consumer relationship. The guide’s generated-file example connects the produced file to an install step, rather than relying on incidental step order.

Make generated Zig source importable

When downstream Zig code must use a generated .zig file, make the generated output available as a module dependency. In the official guide’s example, a generator produces person.zig, and the resulting source is exposed to the main executable through a module dependency. Zig modules form a directed graph, and a module imports another by name; use the build-system module wiring when that imported source is generated rather than an ordinary checked-in file.

Create files with WriteFiles

For content the build script itself needs to write, or files it needs to copy, the guide documents WriteFiles. It makes each generated file and the parent generated directory available as LazyPath values. Pass the relevant path to dependent steps just as you would a path returned for a tool-produced output. This keeps generated content in the build’s managed output flow.

Keep the build graph reliable

  • Declare outputs and pass their paths. A later step should consume the path produced by its upstream step, not assume that a file exists in a particular directory.
  • Express required ordering. Steps that are not connected may run independently or concurrently; add the dependency relationship through the relevant build API.
  • Avoid changing source files during ordinary builds. The guide warns that mutating source files can create caching and concurrency bugs. Generate into build-managed outputs instead.
  • Prefer managed paths and tools over shell assumptions. Passing build-system path values keeps the graph aware of artifacts and avoids dependence on fixed output directories or shell-specific behavior.

Check API details for your Zig version

Zig’s Build API evolves. The current official Build System guide includes example help output identifying Zig 0.17.0, while the language documentation at master changes over time. Those facts do not establish that every example applies unchanged to older releases. Check the guide and examples that correspond to your installed compiler before copying API calls verbatim.
