On an Xbox One, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Updates & downloads, select Update console, and follow the on-screen instructions. To see the installed operating-system version, open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info. If Update console is greyed out and says No console update available, Microsoft says the console is currently up to date.

Choose the right update method

Xbox provides two ways to bring a console up to date. The built-in online method checks Microsoft’s update service directly from the console and is the normal choice. An offline USB method is a recovery option when the console cannot complete an online update or cannot remain connected long enough to download it.

Method What you need Best use Trade-off
Online update An Xbox connected to the internet Routine updates and checking whether a newer release is available Depends on the console’s network connection and the online update service
Offline USB update A Windows PC, a compatible USB flash drive, the current Xbox Offline System Update package, and the console Recovery when an online update cannot finish Requires downloading, preparing, and transferring files; the exact package and console sequence can change

The menu paths in this guide come from Microsoft’s Xbox One support instructions. Xbox Series X|S consoles may use different offline-recovery requirements, so check the current Xbox Support instructions for your exact model before preparing a USB drive.

Before you begin

  • Confirm that the console can connect to the internet if you are using the online method.
  • Have enough time for the console to download, install, and restart. Do not turn it off while an update is being applied.
  • If you are checking a version for support or troubleshooting, write down the value shown in Console info before changing anything.
  • For an offline update, use a USB flash drive that meets the current Xbox Support requirement. Microsoft Community guidance cited for this procedure specifies at least 6 GB; an 8 GB drive is therefore a sensible capacity, but Microsoft’s current page takes precedence if the package requirement changes.

Manually update an Xbox One online

The built-in command is available from the console’s system settings. The labels below use Microsoft’s current Xbox One wording.

  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.

  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
  1. Turn on the console and make sure it is connected to the internet.
  2. Press the Xbox button on the controller to open the guide.
  3. Move to Profile & system, represented by the account icon.
  4. Select Settings.
  5. Open System, then select Updates & downloads.
  6. Select Update console.
  7. Read the message shown and follow any on-screen prompts. If an update is available, the console downloads and installs it. The console may restart during installation.

When the control is greyed out and reads No console update available, Microsoft says there is no update currently available for that console. That message is the expected result when the installed software is already current according to the service.

If the update command is unavailable

Do not treat a greyed-out command as a failed update. The specific message matters: No console update available means the service has not offered a newer update at that moment. If the screen instead shows an error, an interrupted download, or a request to retry, record the exact wording before leaving the page. The online procedure requires an internet connection; when the console cannot complete that connection or download, the USB method below is the supported alternative to investigate.

Check which Xbox system version is installed

The installed operating-system value is shown on the console-information screen. This is the most direct way to identify what is currently installed, whether you are checking before an update, confirming a successful update, or reporting a version to support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system (the account icon).
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Open System.
  5. Select Console info.
  6. Read the system or OS version displayed on that screen.

Record the version exactly as displayed, including punctuation or build information. A version number identifies the software installed on the console; it does not by itself show when the last update occurred. For that timing information, use Latest console update status.

See when the console was last updated

Xbox separates the installed-version information from the update-history status. To see the last-update information:

  1. Press the Xbox button.
  2. Open Profile & system > Settings > System.
  3. Select Updates & downloads.
  4. Choose Latest console update status.

This screen reports when the console was last updated. Use it alongside Console info when documenting a problem: the first screen tells you what software is installed, while the second tells you about the most recent update event recorded by the console.

Turn on automatic Xbox updates

Automatic updating depends on two settings: the console’s power mode must be Instant-on, and Keep my console up to date must be enabled. Both settings are in the system menus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
  2. Go to General > Power mode & startup.
  3. Set Power mode to Instant-on.
  4. Return to System > Updates & downloads.
  5. Enable Keep my console up to date.

These settings allow the console to maintain itself through the automatic-update path. They do not change the manual command: you can still open Update console whenever you want to check immediately.

Use a USB drive when an online update cannot finish

The offline method is not simply a copy of the online menu command. It uses a Windows PC to download Microsoft’s current Xbox Offline System Update package, prepares a USB flash drive, and then uses that drive with the console. Because Microsoft can change the package, file-system requirement, and model-specific instructions, use the current Xbox Support offline-update page for the exact download and console sequence.

What the offline process involves

  1. On a Windows PC, open the current Xbox Support instructions for an Xbox Offline System Update.
  2. Download the update package specified on that page. Do not rely on an old package saved from an earlier update cycle.
  3. Prepare a compatible USB flash drive. Microsoft Community guidance cited for this procedure specifies a minimum capacity of 6 GB. An 8 GB drive provides a practical margin for that stated minimum, but the current Microsoft requirement controls if it changes.
  4. Format or prepare the drive exactly as Microsoft instructs. A recent walkthrough describes an NTFS-formatted drive, but formatting and file-system requirements can change, so confirm the current page before erasing the drive.
  5. Extract the downloaded package on the PC and copy the required update files to the location specified by Xbox Support. Do not add unrelated folders or rename files unless the instructions explicitly require it.
  6. Safely disconnect the USB drive from the PC and connect it to the Xbox.
  7. Follow the console-specific offline-update or recovery sequence shown in the current Xbox Support instructions. The available prompts can differ by model and by the problem that prevented the online update.

The USB drive is a task-enabling tool, not a permanent accessory requirement. Once the console has completed the offline procedure, remove the drive as directed and check Console info to record the installed version. If the console does not recognize the drive, stop and recheck the current Microsoft instructions rather than repeatedly applying files from an older package.

Important limits of the USB method

  • The cited 6 GB figure comes from Microsoft Community guidance dated 2024; it should not be treated as a timeless requirement for every future package.
  • The official article underlying the menu instructions is scoped to Xbox One. Verify Series X|S-specific offline directions before attempting recovery on those models.
  • Offline updating still requires a correctly prepared package. A USB drive by itself cannot create an update or repair an incompatible package.
  • Preparing the drive can erase its existing contents. Copy any files you need elsewhere before formatting it.

Online versus offline: which should you use?

Question Use the online menu Use the USB fallback
Is the console connected to the internet? Yes No, or the online update repeatedly cannot complete
Do you have a Windows PC? Not required Required to download and prepare the package under the cited instructions
How much preparation is involved? Open the guide and select Update console Download, prepare a compatible drive, extract files, copy them, and follow the model-specific recovery sequence
How do you confirm the installed result? Open System > Console info after the update Open System > Console info after the offline procedure
What is the principal risk? The download cannot complete because the network path is unavailable The drive, file system, package, or model sequence does not match current requirements

Start online whenever the console has a reliable internet connection. Move to USB only when the online route cannot complete or when current Xbox Support specifically directs you to use offline recovery. The offline route involves more steps and should be treated as troubleshooting, not as a faster routine update.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see What it means or what to check next
No console update available is greyed out Microsoft says no update is currently available. Check Console info if you need the installed version and Latest console update status if you need the last-update information.
The update cannot download or complete online Confirm that the console is connected to the internet. If the online path still cannot finish, use the current Xbox Offline System Update instructions rather than an old package.
The console does not recognize the USB drive Recheck the current Xbox Support requirements for capacity, file system, extraction, file placement, and console model. Do not assume that a drive prepared for one procedure is valid for another.
The USB package was downloaded a long time ago Download the current package again. Offline packages and model requirements can change.
You need to report the version to support Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info and transcribe the displayed system or OS version exactly.
You want to know when the last update occurred Open System > Updates & downloads > Latest console update status; the version screen alone does not provide that timing detail.

A simple verification checklist

After any successful update, verify the result rather than relying only on the restart.

  • Open Console info and record the installed system version.
  • Open Latest console update status and note the last-update information.
  • If you want future updates to occur automatically, confirm Instant-on under General > Power mode & startup and Keep my console up to date under System > Updates & downloads.
  • If you used USB recovery, remove the drive only when the current Xbox Support procedure says it is safe, then perform the same version and status checks.

Those three screens and settings answer the practical questions most owners have: whether an update is available now, what software is installed, when the console last updated, and whether automatic updating is configured.
