On Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data, select eligible software data, and choose OK. The command moves downloaded software, add-on content, and some update data between the console and a compatible microSD Express card; it does not move save data. A regular microSD card from the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or saves, although captures on it can still be loaded.
How to move Switch 2 games to a microSD Express card
The move tool is built into Data Management. It works in either direction, so you can move eligible data from system memory to the card when internal space is low, or return it to system memory later. Nintendo’s instructions are documented in its software-data transfer guide.
Exact menu path
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll down and select Data Management.
- Choose Move System / microSD Express Card Data.
- Select the software data you want to move. The list can include downloaded software, add-on content, and update data.
- Review the selection and confirm with OK. Keep the console powered on until the transfer finishes.
This is a storage-location command, not a reinstall command. After the transfer, the software remains associated with the same user and can be launched from the HOME Menu. The amount of time depends on how much data is selected and the card and console conditions; Nintendo does not publish a universal transfer-time estimate.
What the command can and cannot move
Eligible downloaded software data, downloadable add-on content, and update data can be moved between system memory and a microSD Express card. Nintendo specifically warns: “Save data and some update data cannot be migrated.” Read the item list and any warning shown on screen before confirming, because a completed move does not mean every file associated with a game changed locations.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Save files stay in the console’s system memory. They are not copied to the card by this tool, and removing downloaded software does not remove its save data. If you download that software again later, the existing save normally remains available to the associated user.
Moving data does not choose a permanent download location
The move screen is not a preference for where future downloads will install. Nintendo does not provide a setting here that makes the card the default location for every later download. If you continue playing after moving a title, new or replacement update data can be written to the location you did not select. That behavior is expected, so check Data Management again when you need to see where space is being used.
What to check before starting a move
First confirm that the card is inserted and recognized in Data Management. If it is a new card, complete the internet system update Switch 2 requests the first time the card is used. Then review the storage breakdown so you know whether the pressure comes from software, add-on content, updates, or captures. Moving only the largest eligible items is often less disruptive than moving everything at once.
Do not remove the card or power off the console during the operation. The menu shows the data available for migration; saves are intentionally absent, and an update that cannot be migrated may remain in system memory. Once the move finishes, return to Data Management and confirm the free-space figures on both locations.
Which microSD card works with Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo Switch 2 is compatible only with microSD Express cards. Nintendo’s compatibility page states: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Express cards use a faster interface than ordinary microSD cards, but compatibility is the essential requirement; a card that merely says “microSD” is not automatically suitable. Nintendo’s current guidance supports microSD Express capacities up to 2TB.
The first time you use a card, the console requires an internet system update. Connect Switch 2 to the internet and install the requested update before troubleshooting the card or attempting to move software. A card that is not microSD Express, or a card being used before the required update, will not provide the expected game-storage functions.
What happens to an old original-Switch microSD card?
A regular microSD card used with the original Nintendo Switch cannot be used on Switch 2 to save or load digital games or save data. It can still be used to load screenshots and videos that were captured to that card. In practical terms, the old card may contain viewable media, but it does not become a game library for the new console. Do not format or discard it until you have copied any captures you want to keep.

Storage choices compared
| Storage location | Capacity or limit | Can hold Switch 2 software data? | Can hold save data? | Capture support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 system memory | 256GB stated by Nintendo; some capacity is reserved for system use | Yes | Yes; saves remain here | Yes |
| microSD Express card | Up to 2TB supported by Nintendo | Yes, for eligible downloaded software, add-on content, and update data | No; saves cannot be saved or copied here | Yes |
| Regular microSD card from the original Switch | No Switch 2 game-storage compatibility | No; digital games cannot be saved or loaded from it | No | Existing screenshots and videos can be loaded |
The 256GB figure is a Nintendo product specification for Switch 2, not a guarantee that all 256GB is available for games. System software reserves part of the capacity. Nintendo also says that no individual game currently requires additional storage to play, so buying a card is optional rather than a universal requirement.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
Buy or reuse a compatible microSD Express card only if your library, downloadable content, updates, or captures regularly exceed available system memory. If the free-space indicator in Data Management remains comfortable, the internal storage is sufficient and no expansion purchase is necessary. Nintendo has not identified a particular card brand, model, or minimum capacity as mandatory for every owner.
When expansion is useful
- You keep several downloaded games and add-on packages installed at the same time.
- Large updates repeatedly consume the remaining system space.
- You record many screenshots or videos and want to keep them on the console.
- You prefer to archive eligible software on removable storage instead of deleting and redownloading it.
What not to assume
- Do not assume every card labeled “microSD” works; look specifically for microSD Express.
- Do not assume a card automatically makes games run faster. Nintendo describes Express as faster to read and write than ordinary microSD, but performance can vary by software and card; no universal gain for every title is established.
- Do not assume a bigger card is required because of one particular game. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage to play.
Choosing a capacity without overbuying
Nintendo supports capacities up to 2TB, but that is a ceiling, not a recommendation that every owner needs the largest card. Match the capacity to how many downloads and captures you want available simultaneously. Because no individual game currently requires additional storage to play, start with your actual free-space trend and add expansion when that pattern justifies it. Verify that any listing says microSD Express, states its capacity clearly, and identifies Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility; the word “microSD” alone is insufficient.
Where are game saves stored?
Switch 2 game save data is stored in system memory and is generally associated with the selected user. The move command cannot put saves on a microSD Express card, and deleting downloaded software does not itself delete those saves. This separation means you can remove a large download to reclaim space without deliberately removing its progress.

How to free space when Switch 2 storage is full
Use System Settings > Data Management to see which software and captures are using capacity. Choose the least disruptive option for the data you want to keep.
Move eligible software to the card
If a microSD Express card is installed, use Move System / microSD Express Card Data and select eligible software, add-on content, or update data. Saves stay in system memory, so moving the software does not move your progress.

Delete software and redownload it later
Data Management lets you delete downloaded software. Nintendo says the save data is unaffected, and the software can be downloaded again later from the account that obtained it. This is useful when you need immediate room but do not want to purchase expansion storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve captures before deleting them
Screenshots and videos can be uploaded to the Nintendo Switch app or transferred to a computer with a USB cable. Verify that the copies open on the destination before deleting the originals from the console. A regular microSD card from the original Switch may still be useful for loading captures, but it is not a replacement for a Switch 2 game-storage card.
Do not plan on a USB hard drive
Nintendo does not currently support external USB hard drives as storage for Switch 2 software. A USB drive can be useful for transferring captures to a computer when supported, but it cannot serve as an additional game library for the console.
Moving from the original Switch: storage move versus system transfer
Moving files between system memory and a card on one Switch 2 is different from transferring users and data from an original Switch to a Switch 2. The move command cannot convert an old regular microSD card into Switch 2 storage.
Prepare the original Switch
For a console-to-console migration, Nintendo recommends moving as much data as possible to the source console’s system storage before starting the transfer. This makes the transfer process less dependent on the old card, which Switch 2 cannot use for digital game and save storage. Keep both consoles charged and updated, and make sure you understand which users and software you intend to move.

Local transfer when both consoles are available
Nintendo provides a local method when the original Switch and Switch 2 are together. Follow the on-screen transfer instructions and keep both systems near one another and connected to power until the process reports completion. The destination can use a microSD Express card for expanded storage after the transfer, but the old console’s regular card is not a compatible destination for Switch 2 game data.
Server transfer when the source console will not be available
Nintendo also documents a server method for cases in which the source console cannot remain with you. The source uploads the transfer data, is initialized after the upload, and Nintendo retains the uploaded data for up to one year. Initialization means the original console is reset as part of this method; do not choose it until you have completed any separate backups and are certain you no longer need that console in its current state. The full options and prerequisites are in Nintendo’s System Transfers to Nintendo Switch 2 guide.

Troubleshooting common storage problems
The card is not recognized
Confirm that the card is explicitly microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card. Install the internet system update requested when the card is first used, then restart the console and check Data Management again. An original-Switch card can appear physically usable while still being incompatible for Switch 2 games and saves.
The move option is missing or some data is not listed
Only eligible software data is presented by the tool. Save data is excluded by design, and Nintendo warns that some update data cannot be migrated. If a particular item is absent, do not infer that its save was lost; saves remain in system memory.

Some associated files may remain in system memory, including saves and update data that cannot be migrated. Reopen Data Management after the operation and inspect the storage breakdown rather than judging by the game icon alone.
A later update appears in the other storage location
The move command does not set a default install destination. Nintendo notes that update data may later be stored where you did not select. This is normal; move eligible data again if you need to rebalance space.
You are worried that deleting a game erased progress
Deleting downloaded software does not itself delete its save data. Redownload the software later using the relevant account. If a title supports Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup, that service is an additional recovery option, separate from microSD storage.

Start by checking System Settings > Data Management rather than buying a card solely because the console has a card slot. Nintendo lists 256GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use, and says no individual game currently requires extra storage. Expansion therefore depends on how much software and media you want installed at once.

The key distinction is simple: software data can be distributed between system memory and microSD Express, while saves remain in system memory. Once that boundary is clear, the Data Management screen tells you whether moving, deleting, or expanding storage is the least disruptive choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I move games to my microSD Express card on Switch 2?
Open System Settings, choose Data Management, select Move System / microSD Express Card Data, select eligible software data, and confirm with OK. The command can move downloaded software, add-on content, and some update data, but not save data.
Can I use my old Switch microSD card on Switch 2?
Only for loading screenshots and videos captured to that card. A regular microSD card from the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data. Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card for expanded game storage.
Does moving a game move my save data?
No. Save data remains in Switch 2 system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD Express card. Moving or deleting downloaded software does not itself delete the associated save.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need a microSD Express card for Switch 2?
No. Nintendo lists 256GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use, and says no individual game currently requires extra storage to play. Expansion is optional if your downloads, updates, or captures fit internally.
Why is some update data still in system memory after I move a game?
Nintendo warns that some update data cannot be migrated. Also, the move command does not set a permanent default location; later update data may be stored in the other location.
What can I do when Switch 2 storage is full?
Move eligible software to a compatible microSD Express card, delete downloaded software and redownload it later, or transfer screenshots and videos to the Nintendo Switch app or a computer before deleting them. External USB hard drives are not currently supported for software storage.
What happens if I use Nintendo’s server transfer from an original Switch?
The source console uploads the transfer data and is initialized after the upload. Nintendo retains the uploaded data for up to one year, so complete separate backups and be certain you no longer need the original console in its current state before starting.
The Bottom Line
Use System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data to move eligible Switch 2 software. Buy a card only when you need more room, and make sure it is microSD Express. Saves stay in system memory, old regular Switch cards are limited to captures, and deleting software is safe when you are prepared to redownload it.
