Buy a digital game that is explicitly labeled Xbox Play Anywhere in the Xbox Store or Windows Store. Sign in on both devices with the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought it, then install the console copy from My Games & Apps > Ready to Install and the PC copy from your Microsoft Store or Xbox library. Eligible games do not require a second purchase for the included Windows and Xbox versions.
What an Xbox Play Anywhere purchase includes
Xbox Play Anywhere is an account-based entitlement for qualifying digital games. Microsoft describes the program as allowing one purchase through the Xbox Store or Windows Store to provide access on an Xbox console, a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, and, where supported, a compatible gaming handheld at no additional game purchase.
The entitlement follows the Microsoft/Xbox account, not a particular console or computer. The account used at checkout must be the account used to claim and install the game on each device.

Check eligibility before you buy
Availability on Xbox alone does not mean that the Windows version is included. Confirm all of the following on the current store listing before completing the purchase:

- Digital purchase: The title must be sold as a qualifying digital game through the Xbox Store or Windows Store. Xbox Play Anywhere does not turn an ordinary physical purchase into a cross-entitlement.
- Xbox Play Anywhere label: Look for the exact program designation on the product page.
- Both platforms listed: The listing should identify the compatible Xbox and Windows platforms. If only an Xbox platform is shown, do not assume that a PC license is included.
- Correct edition: Standard, deluxe, ultimate and bundle editions can contain different games or add-ons. Verify which edition you are buying and where its included content can be used.
- Windows requirements: Read the PC requirements and storage information before buying. A Play Anywhere entitlement does not remove a game’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage or operating-system requirements.
Store wording and page layouts can change. The label and platform information on the listing you are about to purchase are the authoritative check for that transaction.
Install the game on Xbox
- Turn on the Xbox console and sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that purchased the digital Play Anywhere title.
- Open My Games & Apps.
- Open Ready to Install. Owned Play Anywhere games that are available for that console account should appear there.
- Select the game and choose the command to begin installation.
- Wait for the installation to finish, then launch the game from your installed games list.
If the title is not in Ready to Install, do not purchase it again immediately. First confirm that the console is signed in to the account that paid for the game and that the store listing actually carries the Play Anywhere designation. A title that is not eligible will not gain the Windows entitlement simply because it appears in the Xbox catalog.
Install the game on a Windows PC
- Sign in to Windows with the account you intend to use for the game, then sign in to the Xbox and Microsoft Store experiences with the same purchasing account.
- Open the Xbox app or Microsoft Store and search for the game, or open the library or owned-games area.
- Select the game that is associated with your account.
- Choose Download or Install. In Microsoft Store guidance, the Download icon starts the download and installation flow.
- Let the installation complete, then start the game from the Xbox app, Microsoft Store library or Windows Start menu, depending on where it was installed.
The exact button text and library location can vary as Microsoft updates its apps. The key checks are that the account shown in the store is the purchasing account and that the page recognizes the game as owned rather than offering a new purchase.

Continue the same game on the other device
For a title that supports the Play Anywhere cross-progression features, the account carries shared saves, achievements and supported add-on entitlements between the Xbox and Windows versions. Finish a session on one device, allow the game to save and synchronize, then launch it on the other device while signed in to the same account.
Cross-progression does not mean that every game has identical settings or performance on both platforms. A PC may use different graphics settings, control options or display resolutions, and the game’s own listing or documentation determines which add-ons are included with a particular edition.
Requirements that still apply on Windows
Play Anywhere removes the need to buy a second copy; it does not make an incompatible PC compatible. Check the individual store listing for:

- Supported Windows release and build.
- Minimum and recommended processor requirements.
- Graphics processor and graphics-memory requirements.
- System memory requirements.
- Required free storage and the game’s download size.
- Any platform-specific limitations listed by the publisher.
Program-level eligibility covers compatible Windows devices, while the game page supplies the title-specific requirements. A Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer that lacks the required hardware may still show the game as owned but fail to install or run it properly.
Why the game may be missing
The title is not actually Play Anywhere
An Xbox game can have a separate Windows release, or no Windows release at all, without being part of the program. Return to the product page and verify the exact Xbox Play Anywhere designation and the listed Windows platform. If the designation is absent, the Xbox purchase should not be treated as a PC license.
The wrong account is signed in
Purchases are attached to the account that completed checkout. On Xbox, check the active profile before opening Ready to Install. On Windows, check the account displayed in both the Xbox app and Microsoft Store. Signing in to a different family member’s, work or personal account can make an owned game appear to require payment.

The PC does not meet the game’s requirements
If the game is owned but the install option is unavailable, or installation fails, compare the computer with the title’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage and Windows requirements. The Play Anywhere program does not override those checks.
The store interface has changed
Labels and menu locations can change slightly. You may see an owned-games library, a Download icon or an Install button instead of the wording used in older Xbox instructions. Follow the current equivalent of the account library and installation command rather than assuming the entitlement has disappeared.

The game or add-on is being confused with another edition
Bundles and premium editions can display separate entries for the base game and additional content. Open the exact edition shown in your order history or owned library and inspect its included items. An add-on that was not part of the purchase will not appear merely because the base game is Play Anywhere.

How to compare two Xbox Play Anywhere games
If both candidates carry the Play Anywhere label, compare the details that affect how you will use them rather than assuming the experiences are identical.

Cross-entitlement, cross-progression and cross-play are different
These terms describe separate capabilities:
- Cross-entitlement is the one-purchase license that grants access to the eligible Xbox and Windows versions through the purchasing account.
- Cross-progression is the transfer of saves, achievements and supported add-on progress between those versions.
- Cross-play is multiplayer compatibility between players on different platforms.
A game does not need cross-play to qualify for Play Anywhere. Conversely, cross-play in a game with separate platform purchases does not by itself grant a second copy.
Account and purchase checklist
- Use one Microsoft/Xbox account for the purchase, Xbox installation and Windows installation.
- Buy the digital edition from an Xbox Store or Windows Store listing that visibly says Xbox Play Anywhere.
- Confirm that both Xbox and Windows platforms are listed for the exact edition.
- Review Windows hardware, operating-system and storage requirements before downloading.
- Check the owned library before buying again if the game is missing.
- When changing devices, launch the game with the same account so supported saves and achievements can synchronize.
What you should expect after setup
Once the eligible digital title is associated with the correct account, the Xbox copy is accessed through the console’s owned-games installation area and the Windows copy through the owned library in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. You pay for the qualifying game once, but each device still downloads and installs its own platform version and must satisfy its own compatibility requirements.
