Step 1: Prep Your Account
To improve your ability to find people on Instagram, perform the following tasks.
Option 1: Link Your Instagram to Facebook Account

- Open Instagram App on your phone and login to your account.
- Then click your profile tab. If you have uploaded a profile picture, the tab will display the picture. Otherwise, it will display the default icon as shown in the image below…
- On the top right of your profile page, tap the 3 horizontal lines.
- Then tap Settings – the last item on the list…bottom right of the app.
- On the Settings page, scroll down and tap Account.
- Then click Linked Accounts.
- Finally, tap Facebook. Then follow the steps to login to and link your Facebook account to Instagram.
Option 2: Link Your Phone Contacts to Instagram
The final step to prep your account to find someone on Instagram is to link your contacts. Here are the steps…
- Tap your profile tab. Then tap the 3 lines on the top right of your profile.
- From the list of displayed options, tap Discover people.
- Beside Connect Contacts, tap Connect.
- Then, on the Find people to follow pop up, tap Get started.
- Finally, on the Allow Instagram to access your contacts, tap Allow.
Step 2: Find Someone on Instagram
This section offers 2 options to find people on Instagram. Here they are…
Option 1: Find Someone from “Discover People”
- From your Instagram Profile, tap the 3 lines on the top right of the App.
- Then tap Discover people.
- Instagram will then offer you a list of people to follow.
Option 2: Find Someone with Instagram Search
- From the Instagram App, tap the search tab beneath the App. Search tab is next to the Home tab.
- Then, on top of the app, tap the search bar.
- Instagram will request access to your device’s location. You can allow or deny. It is completely optional.
- Instagram search offers 4 tabs – TOP, ACCOUNTS, TAGS and PLACES.
- To find someone by name or phone number, tap the ACCOUNTS tab. Then tap on Search account. Finally, type a name or phone number.
- Instagram search will return a list of accounts matching your search.
- To follow someone on the search result, tap the person’s name. Then tab Follow.
