One-click scans. No signup required.
Find duplicate files by comparing their contents—not just their names—then review each match and remove unwanted copies in a way you can reverse. Start with a narrow folder or two known folders, protect important data with a verified backup, and do not permanently delete files until you have checked that the copy you kept works where you need it.
What counts as a duplicate?
An exact duplicate has the same content as another file. Its filename and folder can be different: photo.jpg and photo-final.jpg might be identical, while two files both named photo.jpg might contain different images. A name-based search can help locate candidates, but it cannot establish that files are duplicates.
Exact matching is also different from finding similar files. A resized, edited, or re-encoded photo may look nearly the same while its file contents differ. Similarity tools can surface those files for human review, but do not treat them as safe-to-delete exact matches.
Prepare before scanning
Back up important files
Before a large cleanup, make a separate backup of the files that matter and verify that you can access the backup. Comparing a backup folder with its source can help identify matching content, but a comparison by itself does not prove that the backup can be restored. An external drive is one possible place for a separate backup; no particular device or capacity is right for every collection.

Choose a narrow scope
Decide what question the scan should answer. A scan of one folder finds duplicates within that folder. A comparison of two selected folders can check a source against a backup, migration copy, or second drive. A tool only checks locations it can read and that you include in the scan.
Start with a user-owned location, such as Downloads or a photo export folder. Avoid broad system and application folders: files that look redundant may be required by software, and a consumer duplicate finder is not a substitute for a system-storage feature. For example, Microsoft documents Windows Server Data Deduplication as a separate server-side optimization for NTFS volumes; its chunk store should not be manually altered without guidance from authorized Microsoft Support (Microsoft Learn: Understanding Data Deduplication).

How duplicate finders identify exact matches
Many finders use stages to reduce unnecessary comparisons. File size can rule out a match when two files differ in size. A tool may then compare hashes of parts of the files and finally calculate a hash over the whole file. Check the documentation for the tool you use: the exact process varies.
The fclones project describes grouping files by size and successive content-hash stages, including whole-file content. It says it does not finish with a byte-for-byte comparison and describes collision risk as negligible for its hash widths and use context. A content hash is a practical way to identify likely exact matches, not a reason to skip reviewing paths and context. DuoBolt says its reported exact matches receive a full-content BLAKE3 hash; its similar-photo identification is a separate feature that calls for judgment (fclones documentation; DuoBolt documentation).

Choose a workflow that lets you review first
| Option | Useful for | Review and recovery | Documented details |
|---|---|---|---|
| fclones | Command-line scans and controlled file operations | Can emit a report; supports a dry-run for intended operations | Separate commands include group, remove, move, link, and dedupe. The documentation explains staged size and hash grouping. |
| Duplicate Wizard for Mac | Internal folder scans or comparison of two folders | Provides a review step and explicit confirmation before selected items go to Trash | The manual describes scans involving external drives and network volumes; this does not mean every tool can safely modify every such storage location. |
| DuoBolt | Exact-file matching and a separate similar-photo review feature | Documentation describes review and restoration features | Its documentation says reported exact matches receive a full-content BLAKE3 hash; similar-photo results are not exact duplicates. |
These are examples of different workflows, not a performance or overall-safety ranking. Before choosing a finder, confirm its supported operating systems and storage types, how it verifies exact matches, whether it lets you preview or save results, and how you can recover files after an action. The cited macOS manual documents external-drive and network-volume scans, but support for scanning does not establish that every application can safely make changes on those locations.
Safe cleanup workflow
- Back up and verify. Protect important files with a separate backup you can access, especially before a broad cleanup.
- Select the folders deliberately. Choose a manageable user-owned folder for an internal scan, or select two known folder trees when checking a backup or migration copy. Do not assume unselected or unreadable locations were checked.
- Scan without deleting. Run the finder to produce groups or a report. If using a command-line tool, keep scanning separate from file modification. For fclones, the documentation recommends its
--dry-runoption to print intended operations without executing them: “To make sure you’re not going to remove wrong files accidentally, use--dry-runoption.” (fclones documentation) - Review every group. Inspect the full paths and, for photos or documents, previews or contents. Confirm that the files are exact matches if your goal is exact-duplicate cleanup. A matching hash or filename does not tell you which copy belongs in the organized library, a project, or a backup.
- Choose what to keep by its role. Keep the copy in the intended project or library location. If another copy may be serving as a backup or archive, leave it in place until you understand its purpose. Do not use oldest, newest, shortest path, or first result as a universal rule.
- Use a reversible action. Prefer moving selected files to Trash or a clearly named holding folder instead of permanently deleting them. For command-line cleanup, save and inspect the report, then use a dry run before any operation. Be clear about whether the chosen command removes files, moves them, creates links, or deduplicates storage; those actions are not interchangeable.
- Verify before emptying Trash. Check the kept copy in its folder and open relevant apps or projects. Empty Trash only after you are satisfied that the files you retained are the ones you need.
What not to do
- Do not delete by filename alone. Names can differ for identical content or match for different content.
- Do not approve every item automatically. Identical content does not reveal the organizational or backup role of each path.
- Do not treat similar photos as exact duplicates. Review edited, resized, or re-encoded versions individually.
- Do not confuse consumer cleanup with server deduplication. Windows Server Data Deduplication stores repeated chunks while preserving access semantics; Microsoft says it is supported on NTFS volumes and warns against manually changing its chunk store without authorized support (Microsoft Learn: Understanding Data Deduplication).
If you are comparing two folders
For a backup or migration check, select the intended source and destination explicitly and use a tool that supports comparing two folders. Review the paths in the results: the same content in both places does not establish that either folder is a complete, restorable backup. Do not remove one side merely to make the trees look cleaner; first confirm which location is the working copy and which, if either, is your retained backup.
