Document the microscope, camera, specimen, settings, date and software before you record; preserve untouched original clips; keep an edit log; cite every visual; retain any required people releases; and freeze the inspected export. Regeneron ISEF is a useful example, but its rules are not automatically the rules for every science competition. Check your own fair’s current handbook and deadlines before submitting.
What a defensible microscopy video record contains
A judge should be able to tell what was recorded, how it was recorded, what changed during editing and which visuals came from somewhere else. A short project log can provide that chain of evidence without turning your notebook into a film-production diary.
- Capture identity: microscope make and model, camera make and model, connection or mount, specimen or sample ID, capture date and operator.
- Optical conditions: objective or eyepiece magnification, illumination method, filters or stains that materially affect appearance, and any special stage or temperature condition.
- Technical settings: recording software, resolution, frame rate, exposure, white balance, gain, focus mode and file format when those settings affect interpretation.
- Provenance: original file name, storage location, checksum or other internal identifier if your project uses one, and the person who transferred or copied the file.
- Edit history: trims, speed changes, crops, annotations, contrast or color adjustments, compositing, narration, music and the date each version was exported.
These are recommended reproducibility details. The ISEF pages reviewed do not prescribe a universal camera-settings log, codec, resolution, frame rate, timestamp method or edit-log template. Use a level of detail that lets another student understand the evidence without implying that your chosen format is an ISEF requirement.
Start by checking the competition’s actual rules
Rules are issued by the competition, affiliation and year, not by the existence of a microscope video. The Society for Science International Rules for Pre-College Science Research page is the official hub for ISEF and links the 2027 rules. It also explains that affiliated fairs may add requirements. Responsibility for knowing those additions rests with the finalist, adult sponsor and fair director.

Use ISEF as a clearly labeled example in your planning:
- For ISEF, Display & Safety rules address citations for graphics, releases for people shown and inspection of digital displays.
- A local or affiliated fair may set different file-submission, presentation, consent or media rules.
- A school-level round may ask for a video while a later fair may inspect only a poster and live explanation. Do not assume that a source project file or raw video must be submitted unless your rules say so.
- Save a PDF or printed copy of the rules for your year and mark the clauses that affect media, citations, people, hazardous material and artificial-intelligence use.
Step 1: Record the capture setup before pressing Record
Write the setup in a dated laboratory notebook or project log before the first useful clip. If you change the objective, light path, camera, specimen preparation or software during a session, start a new entry rather than trying to reconstruct the change later.
Minimum setup fields
| Field | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Microscope | Manufacturer, model, optical path (compound, stereo or another configuration), objective and eyepiece magnification | Allows a reader to understand scale and field of view |
| Camera | Manufacturer, model, sensor or advertised resolution if known, USB or C-mount connection, adapter or port used | Identifies the imaging device and its compatibility path |
| Specimen | Sample ID, preparation date, stain or medium, slide or culture identifier and relevant treatment group | Connects the clip to the experimental record |
| Illumination | Transmitted or reflected light, lamp or LED setting, filter, polarizer, condenser or other setting that changes appearance | Light conditions can change contrast and apparent structure |
| Acquisition | Date and time, software name and version if shown, resolution, frame rate, exposure, gain, white balance and focus mode | Preserves settings that can affect motion, brightness or color |
| File identity | Original file name, camera-card or computer folder, and a short description of the event shown | Prevents confusion when many clips look similar |
Describe what the viewer sees
Use a neutral note such as “Sample B17, 40× objective, transmitted white light, 1920×1080 at 30 fps, 00:00–00:18 shows cells entering the field from the left.” Do not write an interpretation as if it were a capture fact; record “dark circular structures visible” separately from a later conclusion about what those structures represent.
Record changes within a session
If you adjust focus or illumination while recording, note the approximate time and reason. If a clip contains a deliberate change, label it in the edit log or on-screen annotation. This is especially important when brightness or color changes could be mistaken for a biological response.
Step 2: Protect the raw footage
Copy camera files to a project folder and make edits only on duplicates. Keep the camera-original files in a read-only or clearly labeled raw folder; never overwrite them with an edited export.

Keep at least two copies in separate locations when your school policy permits, and verify that a copied file opens before removing anything from a camera card. A second copy is an ordinary protection against accidental loss; it is not a claim that ISEF requires a particular backup system.

Name versions so the sequence is unambiguous
Use names such as sample-B17_2026-10-16_raw-004.mp4, sample-B17_edit-v03.mp4 and sample-B17_final-inspected.mp4. Do not call several different files “final.” If you must replace an export, increment the version and record why.
Step 3: Keep a concise, truthful edit log
The log should let a judge, mentor or your future self distinguish an observational change from a presentation change. It does not need to describe every mouse click.
| Timecode or clip | Operation | Reason and effect |
|---|---|---|
| 00:00–00:02, raw-004 | Trimmed lead-in before the specimen enters view | Removes handling footage; no data-bearing frames removed |
| 00:08–00:14 | Playback changed to 50% speed | Makes motion easier to inspect; duration is labeled on screen |
| 00:15–00:18 | Added arrow and text label | Identifies the structure; arrow is a graphic created in the stated software |
| Entire clip | Minor contrast adjustment | Improves visibility; no features were painted in or erased |
| 00:20–00:30 | Added narration | Explains the procedure; narration does not replace the underlying observation |
Edits that need explicit disclosure
- Trimming: State what was removed and whether the removed portion was non-evidentiary setup.
- Speed changes: Give the playback speed or duration multiplier. A time-lapse or slow motion can change a viewer’s impression of rate.
- Crop or zoom: Identify the original frame and say whether the scale bar remains valid.
- Color, contrast and denoising: State that the adjustment affects display, not the underlying acquisition. Avoid selective changes that make one treatment appear stronger without disclosure.
- Compositing: Mark split screens, stitched fields, picture-in-picture and inserted footage. Do not present separate specimens as one continuous field.
- Annotations: Distinguish arrows, labels and false-color overlays from structures actually recorded.
- Narration and music: Identify who created the narration and the source or license for music. Keep audio low enough that it does not obscure a required explanation.
Keep the editable project file alongside the log, but do not assume a competition requires you to submit it. Submit it only when the current rules or fair instructions request it.
Step 4: Cite microscopy visuals individually
For ISEF, the Display & Safety guidance requires finalist-created graphics to be cited individually with the software used and year created. Graphics created by other people also need individual citation; internet-sourced graphics require a URL. The rule is written for graphics, but a transparent project should apply the same one-visual-at-a-time discipline to microscopy stills, diagrams, labels, plots and inserted footage.
Build a visual-credit register
| Visual ID | What appears | Creator or source | Credit information |
|---|---|---|---|
| V01 | Microscope frame from sample B17 | Finalist, captured in this project | Microscopy video frame; captured [date]; microscope and camera identified in notebook |
| V02 | Arrow and scale-label graphic | Finalist | Software name and year created, as required for an ISEF finalist-created graphic |
| V03 | Reference diagram | Another creator | Creator or institution, title, year if available and URL when sourced online |
| V04 | Inserted demonstration clip | External source | Owner or creator, title, date if available, license or permission and exact URL |
Place a short visual ID beside or below the image when the format allows, and keep the expanded register in your project materials. If a single screen contains several visuals, identify each one rather than using a blanket “images from the internet” line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSeparate original observation from illustrative material
Label a frame recorded through your microscope as project data. Label a stock diagram, textbook illustration or external clip as illustrative. Do not use an external image to imply that your sample produced a feature it did not show. If you create a composite, describe which panel came from which source and what processing was applied.

Step 5: Handle people and releases correctly
ISEF Display & Safety guidance says that if a photo or video shows a person other than the finalist, signed photo/video releases must be kept in a notebook and made available on request; the releases themselves are not displayed. Ordinary specimen footage does not create a people-release requirement merely because it was recorded in a laboratory.
Plan filming so classmates, visitors and identifiable bystanders are outside the frame. If someone must appear, obtain the appropriate signed release before recording or before publication under your local rules. Society for Science gives this sample wording: “I consent to the use of visual images (photos, videos, etc.) involving my participation/my child’s participation in this research.” The page presents it as sample release text, not as a universal required form, so use the fair’s own form when one exists.
Store releases in the notebook or controlled project folder, limit access to the people who need them and do not place signatures, addresses or other private details on the public poster or video.

Step 6: Export, inspect and freeze the submitted version
Keep three things distinct: raw footage, the editable project and the export that you will show. Before submission, open the export on the same type of display you expect to use and check that text, scale bars, labels, audio and frame order survive the export.
ISEF digital-display example
ISEF Display & Safety guidance says finalists using digital displays must be prepared to show the complete presentation. It also states: “These materials may not be altered in any way after the Display & Safety inspection has been completed.” Treat the inspected file as locked: record its file name and export date, make a backup, and do not swap in a corrected video afterward unless the fair explicitly authorizes the change.
Final export checks
- Confirm the opening and closing frames contain the project title, your name or identifier required by the fair and any necessary safety or source labels.
- Watch the entire file, not only the microscope sections. Verify that trims did not remove context and that speed changes are labeled.
- Check every visual ID against the visual-credit register and confirm URLs are complete and accurate.
- Read captions and labels at the actual viewing size. A scale bar or annotation that is illegible on the competition display is not useful evidence.
- Test audio with the display speakers or headphones that the fair permits. Keep a silent version only if the rules allow it and your presentation can explain the difference.
- Copy the inspected export to the required submission medium and keep the project file and raw footage unchanged in your archive.
Optional hardware: choosing a camera that fits the microscope
A dedicated microscope camera is optional; a competition does not inherently require one. A phone adapter or an existing camera may be adequate if it produces stable, interpretable footage. If you buy or borrow a camera, compatibility matters more than a headline megapixel number.

Do not buy a research-grade camera merely to make a school video. A compatible, stable image with a documented scale and honest edit history is more defensible than unused specifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the science documentation separate from the media documentation
Your video log supports the visual record; it does not replace the project’s scientific records. Keep specimen preparation, experimental variables, observations, analysis and safety documentation in the project notebook or data system required by your fair.
For ISEF, the Rules for All Projects page covers the research plan and ethics requirements. It also requires generative-AI use to be acknowledged and says generative AI may not write the research plan, abstract, poster or citations. If you use an AI tool for a permitted purpose, record the tool and how it was used according to the current rules; do not let generated wording replace your own scientific authorship.
Troubleshooting common documentation failures
The video looks bright in the editor but dark on the fair computer
Recheck the export on the target display, then document any display-dependent correction as an export adjustment. Do not silently brighten only the submitted copy while leaving the edit log unchanged.
The camera will not focus through the microscope
Check that the C-mount adapter matches the microscope type, that the camera is seated at the correct parfocal position and that the software has selected the correct device. Test with a spare slide before recording a valuable specimen. If the camera is incompatible, use an approved eyepiece or phone adapter rather than forcing a mount.

- Attention: There is a transparent protective cover in front of the lens of the microscope, which is used to protect the lens. The cover needs to be removed when using the scope. Otherwise, you will not be able to focus and obtain the clear image.
- Wide Application: Our usb Microscope is a great science tool for educational purpose, personal interests and research. Suitable for kids, students, engineers, inventors, collectors to magnify the plants, insects, coins, circuit boards, jewelers, skin, hairs and more.
- User-friendly Accessories and Service: Come with the stable metal stand, OTG adapter, ruler, driver and microscope carrying bag, make your operation more convenient.
Several clips have the same automatic file name
Copy them into dated session folders immediately and rename the copies with a unique sample and sequence identifier. Preserve the original name in the log so the renamed file can be traced back to the camera.
An annotation covers a structure
Move the label outside the field, add a leader line or show an unannotated frame first. Record the change and make clear that the arrow or color overlay was added during editing.
A classmate appears in the background
Trim or reframe the shot if that removes no evidence. If the person remains identifiable, obtain and retain the required release under the applicable rules; do not display the signed form.

You discover an error after inspection
Do not replace the inspected file on your own. Ask the fair director or the official rules contact whether a correction is permitted, and keep the inspected export unchanged until you receive an answer.
One-page pre-submission checklist
- Competition and year rules checked; affiliated-fair additions recorded.
- Microscope, camera, mount or USB path, specimen ID, date, magnification, illumination, software and material settings logged.
- Raw clips preserved and never overwritten; editable project and exports stored separately.
- Every trim, speed change, crop, color adjustment, composite, annotation, narration and music addition entered in the edit log.
- Microscopy stills, diagrams, plots, labels and inserted footage credited individually; internet visuals include their exact URLs.
- Signed releases retained for identifiable people other than the finalist, with releases kept out of the displayed materials.
- Complete presentation watched from start to finish on a representative display.
- Inspected export given a unique name, backed up and not altered afterward unless the fair authorizes a change.
- Research-plan and generative-AI requirements reviewed separately when entering ISEF or an affiliated fair.
This workflow gives you an auditable path from specimen to screen while leaving room for each competition to impose its own format. The strongest submission is not the one with the most elaborate effects; it is the one whose footage, edits, visuals and permissions can be explained without guesswork.
