As at the time of writing this Itechguide, the option to convert PDF to Google Doc is not available in either Google Docs or Google Drive Apps. The steps shared in this guide offer a way around this limitation.

  • Open <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Drive.Google.com (opens in a new tab)" href="https://accounts.google.com/signin/v2/identifier?service=wise&passive=true&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2F%3Futm_source%3Den&utm_medium=button&utm_campaign=web&utm_content=gotodrive&usp=gtdDrive.Google.com from a browser on your PC. Then, sign in with your Google Account.

  • To upload the PDF to Google Drive, drag it from your computer to Google Drive.

  • The file will start uploading from your computer to Google Drive. Wait for the upload to complete. The upload progress bar will be displayed at the bottom right corner of your browser window.
  • When it is fully uploaded, the progress bar will display a tick with a green background.
  • Once the PDF is fully uploaded, right-click it. Then, point to Open with and select Google Docs.
  • Google Docs will open the PDF file in a new browser window and convert it to Google Docs.
  • If you check the folder you uploaded the PDF, a Google Docs file with the same name as the PDF file will be in the same location. That is your Google Docs converted file!

  • Open Docs.Google.com from a browser on your PC. Then, sign in with your Google Account.

  • When Google Docs homepage opens, open a blank document.

  • Then, on the top left of Google Docs document menu, click File. From the displayed options select Open. Open file pop up window will open.
  • At the far right of the pop up window, click the Upload tab.
  • To open the PDF file from Google Docs, drag the file from your computer to the portion of the screen that says “Drag a file here”.
  • You can also click Select a file from your computer. Then navigate to the location of the PDF and upload it.
  • When you drag and drop the file, wait for it to upload.
  • Once the file is uploaded, Google Drive will open it as a PDF file. To convert PDF to Google Doc, click Open with Google Docs.
  • Google Docs will open the file in a new browser tab as a Google Docs file.
  • A copy of the converted Google Docs file will be saved on the root of your Google Drive My Drive folder.
  • To download the file as a Word document, on the top left of the converted Google Docs menu, click File. Then point to Download and select Microsoft Word (.docx).
By downloading the converted PDF to Google Docs document as a Word file, you have effectively converted the PDF to a Microsoft Word file as well!
