There is no established universal privacy winner among AI assistants. To reduce how much of your information is collected or reused, check the exact account and feature you plan to use, then evaluate model improvement, retention, human review, and deletion separately. The controls published for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini cover different things, so they do not form a like-for-like privacy ranking.
How to choose an AI assistant that collects less personal data
Start with the provider’s current privacy documentation for your exact product and account type: consumer, work, or school. Then answer four separate questions:
- Model improvement: Can your conversations be used to improve models, and what setting or mode changes that?
- Retention: How long are conversations or related data kept, including for safety, feedback, or service operation?
- Human review: Can people or service providers review content, and what happens to reviewed conversations?
- Deletion: What does deleting a conversation or activity actually remove, and what copies or exceptions remain?
Compare the answers for the exact feature you will use, not just the assistant’s brand. A training opt-out is not automatically a retention limit, a ban on human review, or a deletion guarantee. The policies below describe official consumer-facing guidance available as of October 4, 2026; work and school accounts may follow different controls.

These controls differ in scope and effect. For instance, Claude’s Incognito mode is specifically described as excluded from model improvement, while Google’s Keep Activity setting also governs whether Gemini chats appear in Activity and how they may be used. OpenAI’s cited control addresses model improvement; it should not be treated as proof of a particular retention period.

How long does an AI assistant keep your conversations?
ChatGPT
The cited OpenAI Data Controls guidance explains how to opt out of model improvement, but does not establish a complete retention schedule. Check the provider’s current retention and deletion documentation separately rather than inferring storage duration from the training setting.
Claude
Anthropic says personal data is retained as reasonably necessary under its policy. If users allow chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. This period applies to that stated training use and is not a general retention period for every Claude conversation or data type. Anthropic’s retention guidance

Gemini Apps
With Keep Activity on, Google sets an 18-month auto-delete default for Gemini Apps activity. Users can change it to 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. Google also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data are retained for up to three years and are not deleted when users delete activity. With Keep Activity off, future Gemini chats are still saved for 72 hours so Google can respond, process feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the public. Turning activity off therefore does not mean zero storage. Other Google settings, including Web & App Activity or Location History, may also continue to save data through other Google services. Do not assume that a training opt-out means no person can access a conversation. Google says human reviewers help protect and improve Gemini services when Keep Activity is on; reviewed chats and related data may remain for up to three years, even after the user deletes activity. Google also says a subset of Connected Apps data processed by Gemini may be reviewed by human reviewers. OpenAI’s cited Data Controls guidance establishes a route to opt out of model improvement, not a complete account of human review. Anthropic’s cited consumer guidance establishes the treatment of Incognito chats for model improvement and eligible data retention, but does not establish that no person can ever access a chat. For either service, consult current policy information for the exact account and feature before sharing sensitive material.

What do activity-off, Incognito, and deletion controls actually do?
Keep Activity off in Gemini
Google says future Gemini chats will not appear in Activity or be used to train its AI models unless you send feedback, but they remain saved for 72 hours for response, feedback processing, and safety. Previously reviewed chats may have a separate retention period, and other Google services may collect activity under their own settings. These controls therefore limit specified uses; they do not promise that no data is stored anywhere.
Incognito in Claude
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even if Model Improvement is enabled. That statement is specifically about model improvement; do not infer broader storage or deletion terms from it. Review the current retention guidance for other handling of consumer data. Deleting Gemini activity
Google lets personal-account users review and delete Gemini Apps activity and turn off Keep Activity. However, Google says chats already reviewed by human reviewers and related data are not deleted when users delete activity. Which assistant should you choose?
Choose based on the data you need to share and the controls you can verify, rather than a broad privacy label. The official consumer sources here cover ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini Apps, but they do not provide equivalent current evidence for every assistant, business or school plan, or jurisdiction. They also do not supply a common measurement that would support ranking one provider as collecting the least.

- If minimizing retention matters most, look for the period, data type, purpose, and exceptions; a short service-operation window is not the same as deletion of prior reviewer copies.
- If you use a work or school account, verify administrator controls and applicable terms rather than assuming consumer settings are available.
- Share only the details needed for the task. Avoid entering confidential or identifying information if the provider’s documented handling does not meet your requirements.
