Before ordering, compare the board’s height and depth with the exact enclosure drawing, then check retention, front-panel fit, connector or backplane position, clearance, ventilation and rack space.
Choose between a rack case and a guided subrack
A 19-inch rack case can hold Eurocard PCBs horizontally, while a subrack holds cards vertically in guides. These are different mounting approaches, not interchangeable descriptions of one enclosure. Subrack.eu describes a typical system as a cabinet or rack containing a card-holding subrack, which in turn accepts subunits or Eurocard boards (Subrack.eu’s subrack overview).
- Choose a horizontal rack case if the board arrangement, available rack height and case depth suit that format. Check how boards are retained and whether the front and rear openings suit your connectors and cabling.
- Choose a guided subrack if cards need to slide into guides or connect to a rear motherboard or connectors. Confirm card-guide spacing, panel dimensions and connector alignment for the exact configuration.
Match PCB height and depth to usable space
“3U” or “6U” alone does not confirm fit. PCB height and depth, the enclosure’s usable internal dimensions, card spacing and the position of any retaining hardware all matter.
Subrack.eu lists PCB heights of 100 mm for 3U and 233.35 mm for 6U, and gives 160 mm, 220 mm and 280 mm as common board depths. These are dimensions on its subrack page; check the drawing for the product you intend to use (source).

Verotec’s 19-inch Eurocard rack-case catalogue describes 1U and 2U cases, with case depths of 270 mm and 370 mm and configurations for 3U and 6U cards. It lists card depths of 160 mm and 220 mm. Those figures describe the catalogue’s configurations, not every model now available; verify the current drawing and SKU before relying on them (Verotec catalogue).
Compare the enclosure features that affect fit

| Airflow and service access | Ventilation, removable covers, cable entry and access for maintenance can determine whether a nominally compatible enclosure works in the finished system. |
| Machining and included hardware | Confirm whether openings need machining and whether guides, tiebars, panels, fasteners and other required parts come with the specific SKU. |
What the documented product options show
Verotec horizontal rack cases
Verotec’s catalogue describes a universal punched-hole pattern for positioning tiebars, with examples combining a 3U by 160 mm board and a 6U by 220 mm board. It also describes side ventilation, a removable top cover and a removable rear gland plate that can be machined. The catalogue states compatibility with IEC 60297-1, IEC 60297-3 and IEEE 1101.10; treat these as the manufacturer’s claims for the documented product, not as confirmation of unlisted features or standards editions (catalogue).

Subracks and rack drawers
Verotec lists Eurocard subracks, front panels and modules as part of its product family (product range). Subrack.eu’s rack-drawer page describes card guides for 3U and 6U Eurocards, options involving rear connectors and motherboards, and customizable front and rear covers. Check which options are available and included for the specific drawer or subrack you are considering (Subrack.eu rack drawers).

- Measure the PCB: record its height and depth, including any components or connector parts that project beyond the board.
- Select the mounting style: decide whether the board belongs in a horizontal rack case or a vertical guided subrack.
- Check the exact drawing: compare the PCB envelope with usable internal clearance, case depth, rack height and the positions of tiebars or guides.
- Confirm interfaces: check front-panel dimensions, connector or backplane placement, rear access and cable routing.
- Check the build details: verify ventilation, cover access, machining needs and which hardware is supplied.
- Get confirmation for the SKU: ask the supplier for the current product drawing and clarify any dimensions or included parts not specified in the listing.
Suppliers document different configurations and accessories, so fit is a question of the complete interface stack—board, retention, panel, connectors, enclosure and rack—not just the U designation. Product pages and catalogue specifications are not independent fit tests; verify the precise model before purchase.
