On a Linux shell, start with cat /etc/os-release to identify the distribution and release, then run uname -srm for kernel and system details. If you are in Windows, ChromeOS, a container, a virtual machine, or a remote session, interpret the result as belonging to that environment—not automatically to the physical host.
The two commands that answer most Linux checks
Open the shell or terminal where you want to identify the operating system. Run these commands separately:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -srm
The first command reads standardized operating-system identification fields. The second reports the kernel name, kernel release, and machine architecture. Together they tell you whether the current command environment is Linux, which distribution identifies itself there, and which kernel context it is using.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a fuller kernel and system report, use:
uname -a
Use /etc/os-release as the authority for the distribution name. Treat uname as complementary system information rather than a replacement for distribution identification.

How to read /etc/os-release
The file is designed for programs and people to identify an operating system. The most useful fields are:
| Field | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
PRETTY_NAME |
A human-readable operating-system label | Use this when you need a readable name for a report or support request. |
ID |
A machine-oriented distribution identifier | Use this in scripts or conditional instructions that need a distribution identifier. |
VERSION_ID |
A release identifier, when supplied | Use it to distinguish releases, while preserving the exact value shown by the system. |
Not every field is mandatory. A missing VERSION_ID, for example, does not prove that the system is not Linux; it only means that this identification file does not provide that particular value. Likewise, do not infer a distribution from a single line if the file supplies a more complete set of fields.
To display only the most useful lines, you can run:
grep -E '^(PRETTY_NAME|ID|VERSION_ID)=' /etc/os-release
If you need the complete identification record for troubleshooting, keep the unfiltered output from cat /etc/os-release. It may contain additional fields that help distinguish editions or related distributions.
What uname tells you—and what it does not
uname -srm requests three pieces of information: the kernel name, the kernel release, and the machine hardware name. uname -a adds the other system fields available to that command.
This is kernel and system context, not a definitive distribution label. A Linux kernel can be used by different distributions, and a compatibility or virtualization layer can present a kernel context that does not describe the host operating system. If the question is “Which Linux distribution and release is this?”, read /etc/os-release. If the question is “Which kernel context and architecture does this shell see?”, use uname.
Choose the check for the environment you are actually using
| Where you are checking | Use this check | What it identifies | Important scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux desktop or server shell | cat /etc/os-release |
Distribution identity and available release fields | Describes the environment in which the command runs. |
| Linux desktop or server shell | uname -srm or uname -a |
Kernel and system details | Not the authoritative distribution name. |
| Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt | wsl --list --verbose (also wsl -l -v) |
Installed WSL distributions, their state, and WSL 1 or WSL 2 | Describes Windows-managed Linux environments, not the Windows host as a Linux distribution. |
| Inside a WSL terminal | cat /etc/os-release and uname -srm |
The Linux environment provided by WSL | Does not establish that the Windows host itself runs Linux. |
| Chromebook Terminal or Linux development environment | Run the Linux commands inside that terminal | The optional Debian Linux environment | The Chromebook device itself runs ChromeOS. |
| Container or sandbox | cat /etc/os-release; optionally inspect /run/host/os-release |
Usually the container image; the optional path may expose host identity | /run/host/os-release is not guaranteed to exist. |
Checking a Linux desktop or physical server
Step 1: Open a shell on the system
Use the machine’s terminal, console, or an already authenticated administrative shell. The commands are read-only identification checks; they do not install packages or change operating-system settings.

Step 2: Identify the distribution
cat /etc/os-release
Look first for PRETTY_NAME. Then note ID and, when present, VERSION_ID. Record the values exactly, including punctuation and quotation marks where they appear, because support instructions often depend on the precise release identifier.
Step 3: Identify kernel context
uname -srm
Use uname -a if you need every field that the command exposes:
uname -a
Step 4: Check whether the result belongs to the intended machine
If you reached the shell through SSH, a hosting console, a container, or a virtual machine, the output describes the system at the other end of that session or the guest environment. It does not automatically identify the laptop, hypervisor, or physical server from which you connected.
Checking Windows for Linux through WSL
Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) is a feature of Windows that provides a Linux file system and Linux command-line tools alongside the Windows desktop. From Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt, run:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
wsl --list --verbose
The abbreviated form is:
wsl -l -v
The listing shows the Linux distributions installed under WSL, each distribution’s current state, and whether it uses WSL 1 or WSL 2. This is the appropriate Windows-side check when you want to know which Linux environments are installed and whether they are running.
To identify the distribution from inside one of those environments, open its WSL terminal and run:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -srm
Those commands report the Linux environment in WSL. They should not be used to describe the Windows host as a Linux system: Windows remains the host operating system, while WSL supplies a Linux environment within it.

When a WSL listing is empty or unexpected
- If no distribution appears, the Windows-side listing has no installed WSL distribution to report.
- If a distribution is listed as stopped, the entry still identifies an installed environment, but it is not currently running.
- If the listing shows more than one distribution, check the distribution name and state rather than assuming the first entry is the one used by every terminal shortcut.
- Use the Linux commands inside the specific distribution when you need its release fields or kernel context.
Checking a Chromebook without confusing ChromeOS with Linux
A Chromebook runs ChromeOS. ChromeOS also offers an optional Linux development environment that opens a Debian environment in the Terminal app. These are related but different scopes:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- The Chromebook’s device operating system is ChromeOS.
- The optional development environment is a Linux environment, identified from its own terminal.
Check the Linux development environment
If the Linux development environment has been enabled, open the ChromeOS Terminal app and run:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -srm
The output describes the Debian environment in which the commands execute. Google’s ChromeOS documentation describes setting up this environment from ChromeOS settings and opening a Debian environment; the exact settings labels can vary with ChromeOS releases, so follow the labels shown on the Chromebook rather than assuming that every device presents an identical screen.
Interpret the result correctly
Using the Terminal app or programs in its default container means you are using Linux in that environment. It does not change the device’s host classification from ChromeOS to a conventional Linux distribution. This distinction matters when a support form asks for the device operating system versus the operating system inside the development container.
Checking inside a container or sandbox
Containers commonly expose a Linux user space even when the physical host uses another operating system. Run the normal checks inside the container:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -srm
In many container setups, /etc/os-release describes the container image. It may therefore identify the image’s distribution and release rather than the host’s distribution.
The os-release specification documents an optional host-identity path:

cat /run/host/os-release
Container runtimes may expose host identity there, but the path is not guaranteed to exist. A missing file is not proof that the host is non-Linux; it means that this runtime has not made host identification available at that location. Do not substitute the container’s PRETTY_NAME for the host’s name without confirming which layer you are examining.
Container questions to answer before reporting a result
- Did the command run in the container, a host shell, or a management console?
- Does the reported path belong to the image or to a mounted host-information directory?
- Is the requested answer about the workload environment or the physical machine?
Remote servers, virtual machines, and SSH sessions
When you connect to a server remotely, execute the checks after the connection is established:
cat /etc/os-release
uname -srm
The result belongs to the shell you reached. For a physical Linux server, that normally identifies the server’s installed distribution and kernel context. For a virtual machine, it identifies the guest operating system; the hypervisor host may use a different operating system. For a container reached through a service console, it identifies the container unless the console is explicitly attached to the host.
This layered interpretation prevents a common error: reporting the client computer’s operating system because that is where the terminal window is displayed. The decisive question is always “Where did the command execute?”
Devices that are Linux-related but not presented as Linux distributions
Operating-system categories are not interchangeable. Google’s device-system API represents Android, iOS, ChromeOS, Windows, macOS, and Linux as separate categories. That classification supports a practical distinction:
- A system may use Linux technology internally without being identified to users as a Linux distribution.
- Android and ChromeOS should not automatically be relabeled as ordinary desktop or server Linux distributions.
- The commands in this guide identify the environment where a shell is available; they are not universal consumer menus for every phone or tablet.
For an Android, iOS, macOS, or Windows device without a Linux shell, do not claim that the device is running a Linux distribution merely because a component, compatibility layer, or application uses Linux-derived technology. Use the platform’s own operating-system category unless you are specifically checking a Linux environment running on that device.
Troubleshooting results that look confusing
/etc/os-release is missing
The file is the standard practical check, but its absence alone does not establish that the environment is not Linux. You may be in a deliberately minimal image, a restricted sandbox, or a nonstandard environment. Run uname -srm to inspect the kernel context, then determine whether you are checking a container, compatibility layer, or other restricted shell.

The release field is absent
Some identification fields are optional. If VERSION_ID is missing, report the available PRETTY_NAME and ID values without inventing a version. Missing version information is an information gap, not a negative Linux test.
uname says Linux, but the device is Windows or ChromeOS
This is expected when the command runs inside WSL or the Chromebook’s Linux development environment. The command is accurately describing the current Linux layer; it is not reclassifying the host device.
The output differs between two terminals
Different terminals may connect to different layers: a Windows shell versus WSL, a ChromeOS host interface versus its Debian environment, or a host shell versus a container. Run the commands in each terminal and label every result with the environment in which it was executed.
The kernel information does not match the distribution name
That is not necessarily an error. uname reports kernel/system details, while /etc/os-release reports distribution identity. Treat them as two separate facts and preserve both when diagnosing a server.
A host-information path is unavailable in a container
/run/host/os-release is optional. If it is absent, report only what the container exposes and avoid presenting the container identity as proof of the physical host’s operating system.
A decision path for support tickets and inventory
- Locate the execution environment. Decide whether the command will run on the physical device, a remote server, a virtual machine, a container, WSL, or a Chromebook’s Linux environment.
- Run the distribution check. Execute
cat /etc/os-releaseand recordPRETTY_NAME,ID, andVERSION_IDwhen present. - Run the kernel check. Execute
uname -srm; useuname -awhen a complete system line is required. - Label the layer. State explicitly whether the output came from the host, guest, container, WSL distribution, or ChromeOS Linux development environment.
- Report uncertainty honestly. If a field or host path is unavailable, say that it was not exposed rather than supplying a guessed distribution or version.
A concise support record can therefore contain the environment name, the exact PRETTY_NAME, ID, and VERSION_ID values that were present, plus the complete uname result and the layer in which both commands ran.
Why the checks are complementary
No single command answers every version of “Is this running Linux?” The distribution file is best for naming the operating system and release. uname is best for kernel and machine context. WSL’s Windows command is best for enumerating Windows-managed Linux distributions and their WSL versions. ChromeOS’s distinction between the host and its Debian environment is essential when a Linux terminal is available on a non-Linux host category. Container host paths, when exposed, add another layer of context.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCombining the appropriate checks gives a precise answer without overstating what a shell can reveal. It tells you what is running where the command executed, which is the level that matters for installing software, following distribution-specific instructions, and diagnosing a server.
