A reliable SQL-agent knowledge layer combines searchable database metadata with explicit business definitions, then retrieves the relevant context before the agent writes a query. Keep permissions and validation outside the model: the database and cloud identity should limit what can run, while tests and review catch incorrect SQL or misunderstood questions.
What belongs in a SQL agent’s knowledge layer?
The layer should help an agent answer two different questions: where is the information stored? and what does the organization mean by it? Database names alone rarely answer both.
Schema metadata tells the agent what it can query
Catalog tables and views, their columns, descriptions, identifiers, time fields, and known relationships. Where available, record join paths and cardinality—for example, whether a customer can have many orders. This context helps the agent choose relevant objects and avoid unsupported joins.
EDB describes a schema knowledge base as an index of metadata such as tables, views, columns, and comments. Its documentation also describes looking up relationships and join paths. A searchable vector index is one possible implementation, not a requirement; the essential capability is retrieving accurate, relevant catalog information.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Business definitions explain how to interpret the schema
Maintain a glossary for terms that can mean different things across teams, including “customer,” “active,” “revenue,” and “last quarter.” Define canonical metrics with their filters, grain, time zone, and exclusions. If teams use the same term differently, record the distinction rather than silently choosing one meaning.
Google Cloud’s data-agent documentation describes schema descriptions, system instructions, and structured context about expected database queries. Atlas documents a YAML-based semantic layer that can represent schema, business terminology, and metrics. These are product examples of ways to encode business meaning; a glossary or semantic model can live in other systems too.

Schema knowledge and content knowledge solve different problems
A schema knowledge base helps the agent select tables, columns, and relationships. A content knowledge base indexes records or documents so the agent can find relevant contents. EDB makes this distinction in its documentation. Use schema retrieval to ground SQL structure; add content retrieval when the task also requires locating particular records or documents.
How should context be retrieved before SQL generation?
Retrieve a small, question-specific set of definitions rather than sending every table description to the model on every request. EDB documents an agent-driven discovery pattern that includes finding schema entities, inspecting column definitions, and looking up relationships and join paths.

- Parse the request. Identify the requested result, time range, likely metric, and any ambiguous business terms.
- Search the catalog and glossary. Retrieve candidate tables or views, relevant columns, metric definitions, and applicable business rules.
- Inspect relationships. Retrieve join paths and cardinality for the candidate objects. Do not infer a join merely because two columns have similar names.
- Resolve ambiguity. Ask a clarifying question when a material choice—such as which definition of “active” to use—cannot be resolved from approved context.
- Draft SQL from the retrieved context. Keep the retrieved definitions available to the generation and validation steps so the query can be checked against the intended metric and objects.
For example, a request for “active customers last quarter” needs more than a table named customers. The agent needs the approved definition of “active,” the relevant event or status fields, the reporting calendar and time zone, and a defined meaning of “last quarter.” If those terms are not specified, it should seek clarification instead of presenting an arbitrary interpretation as settled.
How do you make recurring questions predictable?
For questions that recur and need stable governed behavior, use a reviewed, parameterized query or semantic alias rather than asking the model to invent fresh SQL each time. EDB describes semantic aliases as reviewed parameterized SELECT queries, with support for execution roles intended to follow least-privilege practice.

Review the query and its parameters, document what it returns, and assign an owner responsible for changes. This approach can make a known task more repeatable, but it covers only the questions that have been modeled; it does not replace retrieval for open-ended exploration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should access and execution be controlled?
Do not treat instructions in a prompt as an access-control boundary. Google Cloud documents cloud IAM and database object privileges as separate permission layers: IAM governs access to cloud infrastructure, while database permissions govern access to database objects and operations. Configure both for the actual identity used to execute queries.

Limit the database identity
- Inventory which schemas, tables, and views the agent genuinely needs, then grant access accordingly.
- Prefer read-only credentials for analytical agents unless a separate, reviewed workflow requires writes.
- Check that database policies remain effective on every execution path, including any application-level row or column restrictions.
Microsoft’s SSMS Copilot transparency note says generated queries run under the user’s permissions and warns that generated queries and responses may be inaccurate or fail to match the user’s intended result. That is a product-specific description, not a substitute for verifying the identity and permissions in your own architecture. AWS documents an architecture using query rewriting and source-specific controls; treat it as an implementation example, not a universal guarantee.
Validate before execution
Check generated SQL against the allowed objects and operations, and apply suitable query limits. Database permissions should remain the backstop: a generated query that passes an application check must still be unable to access objects or perform operations the execution identity is not allowed to use.
How do you test and maintain the layer?
Test representative questions against expected results and review failures for missing definitions, ambiguous terms, stale metadata, and incorrect joins. Keep a versioned test set and update it when schemas or business definitions change. Atlas documents validation and schema-drift checks for its semantic layer; those capabilities illustrate maintenance controls to assess, not evidence that a particular product ensures reliability for every deployment.
Record enough information to audit a request and diagnose an error: the retrieved context, generated query, authorization identity, execution outcome, and any correction. Set retention rules so that sensitive prompts or query results are not kept longer than policy allows. AWS architecture guidance describes provenance and identity-aware controls, but teams need to verify their own implementation against their security requirements.

| Approach | Useful when | Trade-offs to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Live schema retrieval with an agent | Questions vary and users need open-ended exploration. | Retrieval quality, schema breadth, latency, permission boundaries, and query validation. |
| Curated semantic model or knowledge base | Business terms, joins, or metrics need to be reusable and maintained. | Ownership, freshness, modeling effort, and fit with existing catalogs. |
| Reviewed parameterized queries for common questions | The same analytical questions recur and require stable behavior. | Coverage is limited to modeled questions; definitions need review and maintenance. |
| Managed cloud data-agent service | The team prefers an integrated platform. | Vendor-specific constraints, supported sources, permissions, cost, portability, and program terms. |
These are design choices, not a product ranking or controlled comparison. EDB, Google Cloud, AWS, and Atlas documentation describes capabilities and patterns; it does not establish a universal accuracy benchmark or a single best vendor.
