You can coach poker without giving up your playing career by treating coaching as a small service business with a narrow promise, defined deliverables, protected calendar blocks, and separate financial records. Start with one student type and one problem, sell one or two manageable formats, and review your actual time and revenue before expanding.

What a player-coach business actually is

A player-coach business has two operating activities: playing poker for your own account and selling instruction based on your experience. They compete for the same scarce resources—mental energy, study time, calendar space and bankroll—so the business needs explicit boundaries rather than whatever hours remain after a session.

Your first version does not need a large video library, a custom website or a full-time client roster. It needs a specific promise that a suitable student can understand. For example: “I help low-stakes no-limit hold’em cash players build a repeatable turn-barrel decision process,” or “I help tournament players review final-table hands and identify high-leverage mistakes.” The narrower promise makes lesson preparation faster and gives prospective clients a reason to choose you.

Existing poker education providers show that coaching can be packaged in several ways, including private instruction, hand reviews, structured courses, quizzes, live webinars, study plans and community access. PokerCoaching lists these formats on its main site and pricing pages (course and coaching formats; plan examples). Those are examples of packaging, not evidence that any particular format guarantees income or learning results.

Choose the student and problem before choosing a product

“I coach poker” is too broad to guide your marketing or lesson design. Define the student in terms you can recognize and the problem in terms you can improve.

Describe a reachable student

  • Game: no-limit hold’em cash, multi-table tournaments, sit-and-gos, Pot-Limit Omaha or another format you actively understand.
  • Stage: a beginner learning fundamentals, a regular trying to beat a stake, or an experienced player addressing a specific leak.
  • Environment: online, live casino, a particular tournament structure, short-handed tables or full ring.
  • Constraints: limited study time, inconsistent bankroll management, trouble using a solver, or difficulty translating theory into table decisions.

State the after-result without promising winnings

Promise a capability you can teach, not a financial outcome you cannot control. “Leave with a written preflop study plan and three decision rules” is measurable. “Increase your win rate by 10 big blinds per 100 hands” is not a responsible default promise because results depend on opposition, sample size, game selection, variance and the student’s execution.

Check whether you can teach the problem repeatedly

Review your own marked hands, notes and study material. If you can explain the same concept with multiple examples and adapt it to common student mistakes, it is a better starting niche than a topic you understand only intuitively. A cash-game specialist and a tournament coach should use different examples, terminology and homework; do not combine them in one vague offer simply to reach a larger audience.

Start with one or two coaching formats

Choose delivery methods by how they fit your playing schedule, preparation capacity and preferred teaching style. The table below compares operating characteristics; it is a planning framework, not a published outcome study.

Format How it works Synchronous or asynchronous Preparation and follow-up Students served at once Curriculum required before sale Schedule fit
One-to-one session Live call or in-person lesson focused on the student’s goals and examples. Synchronous Review goals and hands beforehand; send notes or homework afterward. One Low to moderate; reusable lesson outlines help. Requires a fixed appointment but creates immediate feedback.
Hand review Student submits selected hands; you annotate decisions and return a written or recorded review. Usually asynchronous Time is concentrated in analysis and explanation; define a hand limit. One per review batch Low; a consistent review template is useful. Flexible around playing sessions, but deadlines must be explicit.
Structured course Pre-recorded lessons, examples, exercises and assignments arranged as a sequence. Asynchronous Large initial production effort; periodic updates and learner support. Many High before the first sale. Good for protecting playing blocks once created, but production can disrupt them.
Quiz or drill program Students answer situation-based questions and review explanations. Asynchronous, with optional live debrief Create questions, answer keys and explanations; monitor recurring errors. Many Moderate to high. Useful when you can build content in small batches.
Live webinar or group class Teach one topic to several students with questions and shared examples. Synchronous Prepare a lesson and interaction plan; provide a replay or notes if promised. Several to many Moderate. One calendar block can replace several private sessions, but attendance is less flexible.
Community or study group Ongoing discussion, office hours, shared study and peer feedback. Mixed Requires moderation, scheduled touchpoints and clear response expectations. Many Moderate initially, ongoing operational work. Can become a constant interruption unless response windows are defined.

A practical launch combination is one high-touch service, such as a 60–90 minute private session or a bounded hand review, plus one repeatable asset such as a quiz set or short group class. Test demand and workload before recording a large course.

Define exactly what the client receives

Write the deliverable before you announce a price. A clear scope protects both your playing time and the client’s expectations.

Specify the session or review unit

  • Length of a live meeting and whether setup time is included.
  • Number of hands, screenshots or database filters included in a review.
  • Game format, stakes or tournament stage covered.
  • What the student must submit and the deadline for sending it.
  • Whether the student receives a recording, written notes, a study plan, homework or a follow-up message.
  • Your response window, rescheduling rule and cancellation policy.

Use a repeatable lesson workflow

  1. Intake: collect the student’s goals, format, experience, recent hands and study constraints.
  2. Diagnosis: group the examples by decision type rather than discussing them in the order received.
  3. Teaching: explain the underlying principle, show a baseline line, then contrast common deviations.
  4. Practice: ask the student to make decisions on new but related hands.
  5. Action plan: assign a small number of specific drills or review tasks with a due date.
  6. Follow-up: send agreed notes and record what should be revisited next time.

This is operating guidance, not a tested formula. Its purpose is consistency: you should know how much preparation a booking requires before accepting more clients.

How do I coach poker while still playing?

There is no evidence-backed universal split between playing and coaching. Instead, create recurring blocks for each activity and measure the actual result for several weeks.

Build a weekly block calendar

  • Playing: sessions selected for your game, energy and bankroll plan.
  • Coaching delivery: live lessons, group classes and office hours.
  • Preparation: hand analysis, lesson design and student messages.
  • Administration: scheduling, invoices, records and cancellations.
  • Recovery: sleep, exercise and unstructured time after demanding play or teaching.

Put recurring coaching appointments in the calendar before filling the remaining time with play. Keep preparation and administration in separate blocks so a client message does not fragment a poker session. Set a communication window—for example, one daily period for non-urgent replies—and state that window in your welcome information.

Track the real cost of each service

For every booking, record delivery minutes, preparation, follow-up, administration and any cancellation time. A “90-minute lesson” that consumes three hours is a different business from a 90-minute lesson with a reusable outline. Also log playing hours, session quality and recovery. After several weeks, adjust the calendar based on evidence rather than an assumed optimal allocation; no dependable industry statistic establishes one.

Use capacity limits

Set a maximum number of active students, reviews or community questions for each period. Pause new bookings when preparation spills into protected playing or recovery blocks. A waitlist is safer than accepting work you cannot deliver on time.

What should I charge for poker coaching?

Reliable market-wide rates, conversion rates and expected income were not established in the available evidence, so do not present a number as a standard. Set an initial price from your own workload and positioning, then revise it after tracking real bookings.

Calculate an effective hourly floor

  1. Estimate total time per unit: delivery, preparation, follow-up, scheduling and likely unpaid cancellations.
  2. Decide the minimum effective hourly return that justifies taking time away from playing or study.
  3. Add payment-processing, platform, software and tax-reserve considerations where applicable.
  4. Round to a simple package price and state exactly what is included.

For example, if a hand-review package takes two hours in total, price the package—not just the time spent recording the explanation—and limit the number of hands so the estimate remains credible.

Offer a small, testable menu

Offer Useful when Scope to define
Single diagnostic session A new student wants to identify priorities before committing. Time, intake material, written action plan and whether recording is included.
Hand-review batch The student has examples but limited time for live meetings. Hand count, formats accepted, turnaround and depth of explanation.
Multi-session package The problem requires practice and a later check-in. Number of meetings, expiry date, homework and rescheduling terms.
Small group class Several players share one topic and can learn from each other. Class length, maximum attendance, replay access and question policy.

Review pricing after you know preparation time, demand, repeat bookings and cancellation frequency. Avoid claiming that a price reflects an industry average unless you have a reliable, current source for the specific market and format.

How do I get my first poker coaching clients?

Your first clients are more likely to come from a clearly defined offer and credible examples than from a complicated funnel. Use methods that let prospects understand your specialty and assess whether it fits them.

Publish useful proof of teaching, not promises of winnings

  • Write short hand breakdowns that explain the decision process and assumptions.
  • Post a sample quiz with an explanation of why tempting alternatives fail.
  • Record a brief lesson on one recurring situation, using anonymized hands.
  • Describe your format, scope, preparation requirements and response times on one page.

Do not publish a client’s database, screen name or results without explicit permission. A testimonial can describe clarity, organization or usefulness, but it should not be edited into a guarantee of future profit.

Start with warm, relevant communities

Tell former study partners, local poker groups and format-specific communities exactly whom you help and what the first booking includes. Answer public strategy questions without turning every reply into a sales pitch. When someone asks for individual help, send the scope and scheduling details rather than negotiating an undefined arrangement in messages.

Make the first booking easy to qualify

Use a short intake form asking for format, stakes or tournament level, goals, representative hands and availability. Decline prospects whose needs fall outside your specialty; a good fit protects your reputation and preparation time.

Use study tools as aids, not as a substitute for coaching

Solver-based drills can help you prepare examples or practice your own decisions, but software output still requires interpretation and adaptation to the student’s game. GTO Wizard’s trainer documentation describes configurable practice from preflop through river and situation-specific drills (trainer documentation). PokerCoaching describes its PeakGTO product as a solver-backed study and drill tool (product information). These vendor descriptions do not independently prove learning effectiveness, and no tool is a requirement for starting a coaching business.

Choose a tool by teaching use case

  • Match the tool’s supported formats and positions to the games you coach.
  • Check whether you can create repeatable drills or export examples for students.
  • Explain assumptions such as stack depth, rake, bet sizes and ranges before showing a result.
  • Use human-readable decision rules and practice hands, not unexplained screenshots.
  • Do not present one solver line as the only profitable action in every live or online pool.

Protect playing bankroll and personal runway

Coaching income should not be used to disguise an underfunded playing bankroll, and poker variance should not be allowed to force rushed coaching sales. Keep separate records for playing funds, coaching receipts and household expenses.

Jonathan Little wrote in a 2019 CardPlayer article: “In my opinion, it is short-sighted to try to become a professional poker player without at least a year’s worth of living expenses set aside and a nice bankroll of at least 5,000 big blinds for no-limit hold’em cash games or 100 buy-ins for tournaments.” (CardPlayer article) This is his opinion about becoming a professional player, not a validated threshold for launching a coaching business or an industry standard. Your own risk tolerance, game, expenses and jurisdiction require separate decisions.

Keep business and playing decisions separate

  • Do not move coaching receipts into a playing account without recording the transfer.
  • Do not promise extra sessions because a losing poker month created personal cash pressure.
  • Maintain a cancellation reserve so one delayed payment does not disrupt your playing plan.
  • Reassess whether coaching is supporting or harming your decision quality at the table.

Tax and record-keeping basics for U.S. readers

U.S. tax treatment depends on facts such as whether an activity is conducted as a trade or business, the type of income, expenses, state rules and the tax year. It is not possible to determine every player-coach filing position from general guidance.

IRS Publication 17 (2025) discusses gambling winnings and withholding and states that a person in the trade or business of gambling uses Schedule C (Publication 17). IRS Topic 419 covers gambling income and losses and reporting duties for casual gamblers (Topic 419). IRS side-hustle guidance says income from services is taxable and must be reported, including payments made through payment apps (side-hustle guidance).

Maintain two clean ledgers

  • Coaching: invoice number, date, client or business name, service, amount received, refunds, platform fees and business expenses.
  • Playing: date, venue or platform, game, buy-ins, cash-outs, tournament entries and other records your tax adviser requests.

Keep receipts and payment statements, save copies of invoices and note whether an expense relates to coaching, playing or both. Check current federal and state rules for the tax year and consult a qualified tax professional before choosing a business structure, estimating payments or claiming deductions. This is general information, not individualized tax advice.

Measure whether the arrangement is working

Review the business on a fixed cadence, such as every four to six weeks. Track operating facts rather than vanity metrics.

Metric What it tells you Decision it can support
Qualified inquiries Whether your niche and message attract suitable students. Refine positioning or examples if inquiries are mismatched.
Booked sessions Whether interest converts into scheduled work. Improve scope, intake or scheduling clarity.
Repeat-client rate Whether students find an ongoing use for your service. Develop a follow-up package only if it fits your capacity.
Preparation hours per booking The hidden cost of delivery. Standardize templates, narrow scope or change price.
Cancellations and no-shows Lost time and calendar reliability. Adjust reminders, deposits or policy wording.
Effective hourly revenue Receipts divided by all coaching hours, not only live time. Compare coaching with the value of protected playing and study time.
Playing quality and recovery Whether coaching is degrading your own decision-making. Reduce capacity or move delivery to lower-energy periods.

Keep the measurement period long enough to include ordinary cancellations and variance. A few enthusiastic early clients are not enough to establish a stable income level.

Common failure modes and fixes

Trying to serve every player

Symptom: your page lists every format, stake and skill level, but prospects cannot tell whether you are right for them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: choose one primary student and problem. Add a second segment only after your examples, preparation time and results are repeatable.

Underpricing because only live minutes are counted

Symptom: a full calendar produces little effective return because analysis and messages happen unpaid.

Fix: measure the complete service unit and either narrow the deliverable, use reusable templates or reset the package price.

Letting clients interrupt playing sessions

Symptom: urgent messages, rescheduling and hand uploads break concentration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: publish response windows, use a booking system, require advance hand submissions and keep notifications off during play.

Building a course before validating demand

Symptom: weeks of recording produce a library few people request.

Fix: teach the topic live or as a small paid workshop first. Use recurring questions to decide which lessons deserve permanent production.

Using solver outputs as authority

Symptom: lessons become screenshots of mixed strategies without explaining assumptions or practical adaptation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: show the input assumptions, translate outputs into decision principles and test the student with new examples.

Mixing playing and coaching finances

Symptom: you cannot tell whether coaching is profitable or how much tax to reserve.

Fix: separate ledgers and accounts where practical, reconcile payments monthly and obtain professional tax advice.

A 90-day launch plan

Days 1–14: define and test the offer

  1. Choose one format, student type and recurring problem.
  2. Write the outcome, scope, preparation requirement, turnaround and boundaries.
  3. Create one sample hand breakdown or quiz that demonstrates your teaching.
  4. Invite a small number of suitable players to an initial paid or clearly documented pilot.

Days 15–45: deliver and document

  1. Run the same intake and lesson workflow for each pilot.
  2. Record delivery, preparation, follow-up and cancellation time.
  3. Collect permission-based feedback about clarity and usefulness.
  4. Revise scope where requests repeatedly exceed the original promise.

Days 46–90: stabilize the schedule

  1. Publish a concise service page with examples, availability and policies.
  2. Set a weekly capacity limit that leaves protected playing and recovery blocks.
  3. Introduce a second format only if it uses existing knowledge without creating uncontrolled preparation.
  4. Review inquiries, bookings, repeat work, effective hourly revenue and playing quality at the end of the period.
  5. Keep, narrow, pause or redesign the business based on those records.

Bottom line

Build the coaching side as a constrained service business: identify a student you can genuinely help, sell a clearly bounded format, schedule preparation as well as delivery, and keep coaching finances separate from poker funds. There is no dependable universal price, schedule or income promise to copy. Your own records—qualified demand, total hours, repeat work, effective revenue and playing quality—are the evidence for deciding whether to expand.
