Short answer: RYOBI says every 18V ONE+ battery works with every RYOBI 18V ONE+ product. That platform promise covers the 18V ONE+ family, not RYOBI’s 40V tools. Chargers are a separate question: some charge all 18V ONE+ packs, one current model also accepts 40V packs, and older chargers require model-by-model verification.
Capacity ratings such as 4Ah and 6Ah indicate how much energy a pack can store relative to another pack. A higher-capacity battery can usually run a tool longer, but the actual runtime depends on the tool, material, load and work pattern. Charger speed and the number of batteries charged at once depend on the charger model.
What the ONE+ compatibility promise actually covers
ONE+ is RYOBI’s shared 18V battery platform. RYOBI’s current 6Ah battery page states that 18V ONE+ batteries are compatible with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ product. In practical terms, an 18V ONE+ pack bought years ago can be used in a newer 18V ONE+ drill, saw, light or outdoor tool, provided the battery and tool are genuine members of the 18V ONE+ family.

RYOBI describes ONE+ as having evolved for 30 years and offering more than 300 products. Those are undated statements on the company’s product material, rather than a dated independent market statistic. They do explain why owners commonly have batteries and tools from several generations in the same household.
Will an old Ryobi 18V battery fit a newer ONE+ tool?
For a battery clearly marked RYOBI 18V ONE+, the manufacturer’s current compatibility claim is yes. The pack can be moved between 18V ONE+ tools without buying a different battery for each tool.
There are two important qualifications:
- The statement applies to the 18V ONE+ platform. It does not cover RYOBI 40V tools or other voltage families.
- A very old or unidentified charger is a separate compatibility issue. The battery may fit the tool while the charger needs a manual check.
Look for the platform marking on both the battery and tool. If a listing, label or kit only gives a partial model number, stop and identify the complete number before charging. Do not force a pack into a tool or charger whose rails, contacts or labels do not match.

Battery capacity: what 2Ah, 4Ah and 6Ah change
Ah means ampere-hours, a capacity rating. Within the same 18V platform, a 6Ah pack stores more charge than a 4Ah pack, and a 4Ah pack stores more than a 2Ah pack. That extra stored energy is why a higher-capacity pack is generally chosen for longer work between charges.

Capacity is not a guaranteed number of minutes. A drill making small pilot holes may use far less energy than a circular saw cutting dense lumber, and an outdoor tool can draw different power as the material changes. Runtime also changes with battery age, temperature and the operator’s technique. Treat the Ah number as a comparison between packs, not as a promise for a particular tool.

The 6Ah description is a vendor positioning claim, not an independent runtime test. If balance or fatigue matters, compare the complete battery model and the tool’s instructions rather than choosing solely by the largest Ah number.
What is inside a ONE+ battery?
RYOBI identifies lithium-ion cells, IntelliCell electronics, COOL-CORE temperature management and an LED fuel gauge on the PBP007 6Ah battery. These are product features named by RYOBI; they are not a complete circuit-level description of every battery in the platform.
Battery generations and chemistry labels still matter when selecting a charger. A current charger may be advertised broadly for all 18V ONE+ batteries, while an older charger may have a narrower or different specification. The label and manual for the exact model take priority over a general assumption based on the battery’s physical fit.

Can you use any Ryobi ONE+ charger?
Do not treat “ONE+” as a blanket approval for every charger ever made. Current models make broad compatibility claims, but legacy units need their own documentation. The most reliable process is to read the charger’s complete model number, then check its manual or the product information for the battery type and platform it supports.
PCG004 fast charger
RYOBI lists the PCG004 as compatible with all RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries. It is marketed as a fast charger and includes a specific claim: an 18V ONE+ High Performance 2Ah battery can be charged in less than 30 minutes. That time applies to the named battery class and this charger’s stated test condition; it is not a universal charging time for every 18V pack.
PCG005 dual-port simultaneous charger
RYOBI lists the PCG005 as compatible with all RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries and says it charges two batteries simultaneously. Choose it when keeping two packs available matters more than using a single charging slot. “Simultaneous” describes the two-port operation; it does not establish the same charge time for both packs or for every capacity.
PCG007 18V/40V dual-platform charger
The PCG007 is advertised as compatible with any RYOBI 18V ONE+ or 40V battery. This is a property of the charger. It does not make an 18V battery suitable for a 40V tool, and it does not make a 40V battery suitable for an 18V tool. The charger’s dual-platform capability should never be used as evidence that the tool platforms are interchangeable.

P117 legacy dual-chemistry charger
An older RYOBI 18V ONE+ battery-and-charger kit lists a P102 lithium-ion battery and a P117 dual-chemistry charger. That kit is useful evidence that legacy charger specifications differ, but it is not a complete compatibility matrix for every historical pack. If your charger is a P117 or another older model, use its printed label and manual before connecting a newer battery.

How to identify the right battery and charger
- Read the battery label. Record the voltage family, “ONE+” wording, capacity and full model number, such as PBP007.
- Read the tool label. Confirm that the tool is an 18V ONE+ product before inserting an 18V pack. A 40V label indicates a different platform.
- Read the charger model. PCG004, PCG005, PCG007 and P117 have different feature and platform descriptions.
- Match the charger claim to the battery. A charger stating support for all 18V ONE+ batteries is different from an older charger whose documentation names a chemistry or specific kit.
- Check the manual when anything is unclear. This is especially important for a battery or charger bought used, inherited without its packaging, or showing worn or unreadable labels.
- Inspect before charging. Do not use a pack or charger with cracked housing, damaged contacts, heat damage or another condition that makes the manual’s safety instructions inapplicable.
Common compatibility questions, answered precisely
Can a Ryobi 18V battery charge on a 40V charger?
Only if the charger is specifically designed for both platforms, such as the PCG007’s stated 18V ONE+ and 40V compatibility. A charger labeled only for 40V should not be assumed to accept an 18V pack. Even when a dual-platform charger accepts both, each battery remains tied to its own tool platform.
Can a 40V battery run an 18V ONE+ tool?
No compatibility claim supports that use. The PCG007 statement concerns charging, not tool operation. Use an 18V ONE+ battery in an 18V ONE+ tool and a 40V battery in a 40V tool.
Does a 6Ah battery charge six times slower than a 1Ah battery?
No such universal calculation is established by the product information. Charge time depends on the charger, pack design and capacity. The PCG004 example is limited to a named High Performance 2Ah battery and should not be extrapolated to larger packs.

Does “dual chemistry” mean every lithium-ion battery is supported?
No. “Dual chemistry” is a feature description for a particular legacy charger. It does not prove that the charger supports every later lithium-ion model. Verify the P117 or other charger’s manual for the exact battery.
Choosing a charger by the job
- Replacing a current 18V charger: A model with an explicit “compatible with all RYOBI 18V ONE+ batteries” statement, such as PCG004 or PCG005, addresses the broad current-platform requirement.
- Reducing wait time for a named pack: PCG004 has RYOBI’s less-than-30-minute claim for a High Performance 2Ah battery. Use that figure only for that stated combination.
- Keeping two packs charging: PCG005’s two-port simultaneous operation is the relevant feature.
- Owning both voltage families: PCG007 is the model in this comparison that RYOBI identifies for both 18V ONE+ and 40V batteries. The tools still require their own platform batteries.
- Keeping an older charger: Identify the exact model and consult its manual instead of inferring support from a newer charger’s wording.
Troubleshooting a battery or charger that does not seem to work
The battery fits physically but the tool will not run
Recheck the voltage family and platform marking. Physical fit alone is not proof of electrical or tool compatibility. Remove the battery, inspect the contacts for contamination or damage, and consult the tool and battery manuals. If the pack is from the 40V family, it is not an 18V ONE+ replacement.
The charger does not recognize the battery
Confirm the charger model and its stated battery support. An older dual-chemistry model may not have the same published scope as PCG004 or PCG005. Check that the battery is seated correctly and that the contacts and housing are undamaged. Stop using the combination if the manual does not list it.

Compare the actual battery capacity and model with the charger’s claim. The PCG004 figure is for a specific High Performance 2Ah battery, not every 4Ah or 6Ah pack. Temperature, battery condition and charger status can also affect the observed time; use the manufacturer’s instructions for the next diagnostic step.
The battery becomes unusually hot or shows physical damage
Disconnect it and follow the safety instructions in the battery and charger manuals. Do not continue charging a swollen, cracked or heat-damaged pack, and do not substitute an unverified charger in an attempt to solve the problem.
A simple decision rule
Start with the tool’s platform, not the charger’s marketing feature. For an 18V ONE+ tool, select an 18V ONE+ battery and then choose a charger whose exact model documentation supports that battery. Pick capacity according to the balance between runtime and handling. Choose PCG004 for its specified fast-charge example, PCG005 for two-at-once charging, or PCG007 when one charger must accept both 18V ONE+ and 40V packs. Treat any legacy charger, including P117, as a separate verification exercise.
