For a typical four-hour weekly game, plan about 8 hours for Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, 20–28 hours for Lost Mine of Phandelver, and 32–46 hours for Dragon of Icespire Peak. Only the Stormwreck Isle figure comes from explicit Wizards scheduling guidance; the other ranges are community planning estimates.
Those totals describe table time, not the extra evening you may need for character creation, rules teaching, breaks or between-session preparation. The right choice depends less on the advertised level range than on how much calendar time your group can protect and whether you want a tightly guided introduction or a flexible set of quests.
Runtime at a glance
The three adventures most often treated as modern D&D starter campaigns are Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire Peak and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. Roll20’s starter-set guide lists all three as principal beginner adventures. The official D&D overview describes Stormwreck Isle as a level 1–3 introduction and Icespire Peak as a level 1–7, side-quest-driven adventure.

| Adventure | Best-supported planning time | Evidence quality | Why tables finish at different times |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragons of Stormwreck Isle | About 8 hours; the opening encounter is 60–90 minutes | Official Wizards guidance | Teaching pace and optional exploration |
| Lost Mine of Phandelver | About 20–28 hours | Community estimate | Role-play, exploration and combat speed |
| Dragon of Icespire Peak | About 32–46 hours | Community estimate | Side quests can be cut, reordered or expanded |
In a four-hour weekly slot, those figures correspond to roughly two, five to seven, and eight to twelve meetings respectively. Treat the last two conversions as scheduling aids rather than promises from Wizards; they are arithmetic applied to community ranges.

How reliable are the published time estimates?
Adventure books rarely specify a guaranteed number of hours because a tabletop session has no fixed playback speed. A group that role-plays every conversation, searches every room and discusses each tactical move can take twice as long as a group that resolves scenes briskly. Player absences, rules questions and breaks create further drift.
Stormwreck Isle has the clearest anchor. Wizards Play Network event guidance calls the Drowned Sailors opening a “60 to 90 minute adventure session” and says the complete adventure can be divided into “four, two-hour sessions.” An Adventurers League adaptation guide likewise presents Stormwreck scenes as separate two- to three-hour sessions. D&D Beyond’s 2021 editorial description calls the adventure “short but tightly written” and says it introduces game concepts slowly.
No equivalent Wizards runtime promise is supplied for Lost Mine of Phandelver or Dragon of Icespire Peak. Their figures are useful community planning ranges. Keep that distinction visible when you set expectations with players: a range is a forecast based on how groups commonly play, not a completion deadline.

What the schedule looks like
Stormwreck Isle is the strongest fit when a group has only a few available meetings. Its official four-session plan uses two-hour blocks, which makes it practical for a school club, family game, convention slot or weeknight table. The opening Drowned Sailors encounter is designed to fit one such meeting, giving new players a contained first lesson before the rest of the island opens up.

Why it tends to stay compact
The adventure is written as a focused level 1–3 introduction rather than a broad regional sandbox. Scenes teach core concepts in a gradual order, so the Dungeon Master spends less time inventing connective material. Optional exploration can still add time, especially if players investigate every lead or linger in social scenes, but the central path remains comparatively tight.
How to prepare for a two-hour slot
- Start with characters ready to play. Use the included pregenerated characters if the group is new or if character creation would consume most of the first meeting.
- Reserve the first 10–15 minutes for safety tools, table expectations and a concise explanation of the action, movement and ability-check loops.
- Use the opening encounter as the rules tutorial. Explain a rule when it first matters instead of delivering a long lecture before play.
- End on a clear decision point. Note unresolved clues and the exact place where the next meeting begins so a short session does not lose momentum.
The official Stormwreck Isle Starter Set packages the adventure book with a level 1–3 rulebook, five pregenerated characters and six dice. That contents list can reduce setup time, although it does not change the amount of play the story itself needs.
Lost Mine of Phandelver: a medium-length first campaign
Planning range
Community campaign schedules commonly allow 20–28 hours for Lost Mine of Phandelver. In a four-hour weekly game, that is five to seven meetings. Because this is not a Wizards runtime commitment, choose a target inside the range only after asking how much role-play and exploration your table enjoys.
Where the hours go
The adventure combines travel, investigation, wilderness encounters, a town hub and a climactic dungeon. Groups that negotiate extensively in town or map every branch of a location will use the upper end of the estimate. A table that keeps travel scenes brief and moves directly between essential objectives may finish near the lower end.

Keeping a medium campaign on track
- At the start of each meeting, state the party’s current objective and the information that points toward it.
- Mark optional locations separately from required clues so players can choose deliberately instead of wandering by accident.
- Use a visible break or scene-change point when a fight runs long; resume with a one-minute recap rather than replaying the previous discussion.
- Tell players when a location is complete. Closure helps the group decide whether to investigate another lead or advance the main plot.
If your calendar has a firm end date, identify which locations are essential before the first session. That lets you shorten travel or omit a side investigation without making the finale feel abrupt.
Dragon of Icespire Peak: the expandable sandbox
Planning range
Community estimates place Dragon of Icespire Peak at roughly 32–46 hours, or eight to twelve four-hour meetings. The wider spread is a feature of its structure, not a contradiction: D&D presents it as a level 1–7 adventure built around numerous side quests and adjustable leveling requirements.
Why completion time varies most
The party can choose which quests to pursue, return to earlier locations and spend time on missions that are interesting but not necessary for the final confrontation. A Dungeon Master can cut a quest chain to meet a deadline, while a group that accepts nearly every lead can run well beyond the shorter forecast. Character decisions, travel choices and the amount of in-world downtime all have visible effects on the calendar.
Three ways to scope it
- Short campaign: Select a small set of quests that establish the main threat, award the levels the adventure expects and lead directly to the finale.
- Standard campaign: Offer the available quests, but review progress after each meeting and retire hooks that no longer serve the party’s goals.
- Open-ended campaign: Keep most side quests available, allow return visits and let the party decide its own route. Schedule additional meetings rather than promising a fixed end date.
Tell players up front which scope you are using. The same book can feel like a brisk introductory campaign or a long-running sandbox depending on that choice.

Convert the estimate to your real calendar
Start with the hours of actual play you can protect, then add non-play overhead. A four-hour booking may contain only three hours and 30 minutes of adventure after a meal, technical setup and a break. Conversely, a two-hour club meeting may devote nearly every minute to the scenario if characters and materials are ready.
| Available format | Best use | Planning adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| Two-hour sessions | Family, school, convention or weeknight games | Use the Stormwreck-style short blocks; end at a scene boundary and keep recaps brief |
| Four-hour sessions | Typical weekly home game | Apply the community ranges directly, while reserving time for a break |
| Irregular sessions | Rotating attendance or monthly games | Plan by scenes rather than by chapters and keep written progress notes |
For a simple forecast, divide the adventure’s estimated hours by your reliable play hours per meeting and round up. Then add at least one additional meeting if the group must create characters, learn the rules from scratch or frequently play with substitutes. That buffer is a planning safeguard, not part of the published runtime.
What commonly adds time?
- Character creation: New players need help choosing abilities, equipment and spells. Pregenerated characters remove decisions but also require a short orientation.
- Rules teaching: The first combat is slower while everyone learns actions, movement, conditions and dice procedures.
- Role-play depth: Negotiating with nonplayer characters, debating party plans and pursuing personal goals can turn a short scene into a full meeting.
- Exploration style: Mapping, searching for traps and examining every clue reward careful groups but extend the clock.
- Combat pace: Large enemy groups, unfamiliar spells and tactical discussion increase the time between turns.
- Breaks and logistics: Food, late arrivals, digital-table setup and rules lookups reduce the hours available for the adventure.
None of these factors means a group is playing incorrectly. They explain why a published range should be treated as a capacity plan rather than a stopwatch.
Choose by the time you actually have
If you have four to eight total hours
Stormwreck Isle has the strongest documented fit. Its short, tightly written structure and official two-hour-session guidance let you schedule a complete introduction without compressing a larger campaign into an awkward ending.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

If you can commit to five to seven weekly meetings
Lost Mine of Phandelver offers a middle path: enough room for investigation and character development, but a narrower scope than a side-quest sandbox. Set a midpoint check-in so you can trim optional scenes if the group is trending toward the upper end.
If you want a longer, player-directed campaign
Icespire Peak is the natural choice among these three because its quest menu and adjustable leveling support expansion. Do not promise a fixed finale date until the group decides how many optional quests it wants to pursue.
A session-zero planning checklist
- Ask each player how many hours they can attend consistently and whether the schedule is weekly, fortnightly or irregular.
- Choose a session length that includes a break without silently removing play time.
- Explain whether the campaign will follow the main path, include selected side quests or remain open-ended.
- Prepare characters, dice and rules references before the first meeting whenever possible.
- Set a review point after the opening session: compare actual scene progress with the forecast and revise the calendar.
- Keep a short log of completed locations, unresolved hooks and the next intended objective. This prevents recap time from consuming the next session.
A realistic schedule protects the part players value most: making decisions together. Pick the adventure whose structure matches your available time, label estimates honestly, and leave enough flexibility for the group’s own pace.
