That can feel like the assistant has built a profile, but there is no single, shared profile system across providers. Saved memories, past-chat personalization, chat records, and data used to improve models are different things, with separate controls and deletion rules.
What does an AI assistant remember about you?
“Remembering” can mean several different things. A detail available in the conversation you are having is not necessarily stored for later. A saved memory is information retained for future use. Past-chat personalization draws on earlier conversations. Model improvement is a separate question about whether eligible conversation data may be used to improve a provider’s models.
- Current conversation context: Information available within the conversation at hand. The sources cited here do not establish a general technical account of how assistants implement this.
- Saved memory: A fact or preference retained for future personalization and, in some products, available to review or delete.
- Past-chat personalization: Use of relevant information from earlier conversations in a later response, even if you do not repeat it in the current thread.
- Model improvement: Use of eligible chat data to improve models. This is not the same as remembering details to personalize your next reply.
These distinctions matter because turning off one feature or deleting one record may not change the others.
How do ChatGPT and Gemini use past conversations?
ChatGPT: saved memories and chat-history insights
OpenAI documents two personalization sources: saved memories and relevant information referenced from past conversations. Saved memories are details a user asks ChatGPT to retain; chat-history personalization can draw on useful information from earlier chats. Gemini: personalization with memory of past chats
Google documents personalization based on past Gemini chats. Its help page explains how to find and delete past chats and how to ask Gemini whether it used information from them. Google cautions that personalization may take a short time to stop after a chat is deleted. Changes to data in connected Google apps may take days to affect the Gemini experience. Claude: model improvement is not proof of a personal profile
Anthropic’s cited disclosures describe model-improvement data use, retention, and Incognito chats. They do not establish that Claude maintains a cross-chat personal profile equivalent to the memory and past-chat personalization features documented by OpenAI and Google. The table reflects only what these provider pages say about their own products; it does not rank their privacy protections. Features and settings can vary by plan, account type, platform, and region, and can change.
If I delete a chat, does the assistant forget it?
Not necessarily. In ChatGPT, the saved memory and the conversation where you mentioned it are separate. OpenAI says deleting one does not automatically delete the other. It also states: “Deleting a saved memory prevents it from being used in future personalization, but it does not remove mentions of that information from past conversations.” OpenAI Help Center, “Memory in ChatGPT”.

For Gemini, Google warns that deleting a chat may not stop personalization instantly. For either service, do not assume that removing a conversation instantly removes every related record or effect across all systems; follow the provider’s current account and activity controls.
Does turning off memory stop AI training?
No single setting should be assumed to cover both. ChatGPT’s memory controls and model-improvement control are distinct. OpenAI says turning off “Improve the model for everyone” prevents new conversations from being used to train models. Its current Help Center says personal-account chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when that setting is on; content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used by default for training. Temporary Chat is another separate mode. OpenAI says it does not create memories or appear in history, while limited safety-relevant context may still be used in rare high-risk situations. Anthropic says that chats allowed for model improvement may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. This qualification applies to new or resumed chats after model improvement has been enabled. Anthropic says switching off model improvement means previous or new chats will not be used for future training, while data already included in runs in progress or trained models is treated separately. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. These disclosures concern training and retention, not proof of a persistent personal profile.

- Check personalization or memory controls. Review saved memories and any past-chat personalization options the product offers. In ChatGPT, OpenAI documents managing memory in settings and asking the assistant to change or forget information.
- Handle chats and memories separately. If you want to remove both a saved memory and its source conversation from the relevant account surfaces, use the controls for each rather than assuming deleting one handles both.
- Review model-improvement settings separately. Turn off the provider’s training or model-improvement option if that is your goal; do not treat memory deletion or chat deletion as a substitute.
- Account for processing delays. Gemini’s documentation says the effect of deleting a chat on personalization may take a short time, and connected-app data changes may take days.
- Use temporary or incognito modes only for their documented purpose. ChatGPT’s Temporary Chat is described as not creating memories or appearing in history; Anthropic says Claude Incognito chats are not used for model improvement. Check each provider’s current terms for other retention or safety handling.
Settings labels and availability can change, and may differ by account, platform, plan, or region. Use the provider’s current help page and in-product controls to confirm the available options.

Why persistent context can create a privacy mismatch
Continuity can spare people from repeating useful information. It can also carry a detail shared for one task into a later answer where it is not relevant. A 2026 qualitative study, “When Disability Disclosure Travels: Memory, Privacy, and Contextual Integrity in Conversational AI,” interviewed 12 adults with disabilities in the United States. Participants described both reduced repeated disclosure and concern that disability information could travel into contexts where it did not belong. This is interview evidence from a small, specific sample—not a measure of how often the issue affects users generally. See the study.
There is no broad, representative cross-platform statistic established here for how often assistants infer personal traits or build profiles. Nor do the cited provider pages show that an assistant necessarily knows a person’s full identity. The defensible concern is narrower: when a product retains or references information, it may influence later responses, so users should understand which feature is active and what its controls do.
