Grassday is an offline-first AI companion that turns your own outing preferences, local forecast, and air-quality data into one daily two-hour recommendation for going outside. Instead of asking you to interpret hourly charts, it presents a single recommendation card, explains which conditions affected the choice, and can create a printable field card so you can leave your phone behind.
The project was created by SK Firdous Ali (Aryan) for the DEV Community Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge, Week 1, themed “Touch Grass.” Its design is promising as a focused experiment in local, explainable assistance, but the published project description does not include an independent accuracy study, clinical outcome, or measured behavior-change result.
What Grassday does
Grassday answers a practical question: When is the best time for me to go outside today? It learns from the way you rate previous outings, combines that history with current environmental conditions, and chooses a peak two-hour window. The result is deliberately narrow: one recommendation and a short explanation rather than a page of weather graphs.

The documented demonstration uses a synthetic user with 25 realistic seeded outings. That profile prefers temperatures from 18 to 24°C, low wind, and no rain. Those records make the demo look personalized, but they are not evidence that the model will predict comfort accurately for a real person. The project is intended to let a real user replace the seeded history with genuine outings recorded locally.

Grassday was built around a behavioral goal as much as a forecasting goal. Creator SK Firdous Ali describes the principle this way: “The core design principle was simple: the screen must be the shortest part of the experience.” The app is meant to help you make a decision quickly, print the result if useful, and spend less time looking at a device.
How the recommendation is produced
The project description identifies a complete local pipeline. Each stage has a distinct job, so the recommendation is not simply a weather condition mapped to a fixed rule.
1. It gathers a forecast and air-quality conditions
Grassday uses a seven-day forecast from Open-Meteo together with air-quality input. The forecast supplies the environmental conditions that could affect an outing, while air-quality information adds a factor that a temperature-only decision would miss. The project names 14 biometeorological variables in its feature set; it does not publish a full variable-by-variable list in the available description.

A local SQLite cache stores the forecast and related information on the device. This is the foundation of the offline-first design: the application can work with data already retrieved instead of sending every decision to a remote service. Local caching also provides a place to retain outing history and ratings.

3. It learns from your outing ratings
After an outing, you can rate the experience on a 1–5-star scale. Those ratings are the personal signal in the system. A person who consistently dislikes windy afternoons should gradually receive different recommendations from someone who enjoys them, even when both people see the same forecast.
4. A TabPFN model scores comfort
The documented machine-learning component is a TabPFN v2 regressor. It performs in-context comfort scoring from the available environmental features and the user’s outing history. In practical terms, the model estimates how suitable each candidate period is for that particular preference profile; it is not presented as a medical, safety, or universal comfort predictor.
5. Feature sensitivity explains the result
Grassday calculates vectorized feature-sensitivity scores to show which conditions influenced the recommendation. An explanation might therefore identify temperature, wind, rain risk, or air quality as important factors instead of presenting an unexplained score. The published description does not claim that these explanations prove causality; they are interpretive cues for understanding the model’s choice.

6. A local nudge engine writes the encouragement
An Ollama-based nudge engine, with a fallback option, creates contextual encouragement around the recommendation. This layer is for wording and motivation, not for replacing the comfort score. If the language-generation component is unavailable, the fallback keeps the experience from depending entirely on that model.

7. ReportLab creates a field card
ReportLab generates a printable PDF field card. You can print the recommendation before leaving, put the paper in a pocket, and avoid checking the phone repeatedly. This is a concrete expression of the project’s screen-minimization goal rather than an additional forecasting feature.
What “offline-first” means here
Offline-first does not mean that a device can obtain a fresh seven-day forecast with no network connection. Fresh forecast and air-quality information must be fetched at some point. The documented architecture instead keeps the working data, ratings, and recommendation workflow local after data has been retrieved. If the connection is unavailable, the app can use its cached information, but that information may be older than the current conditions.
That distinction matters when conditions change quickly. A cached forecast can still support a planned walk, but you should check current local hazards independently when storms, smoke, extreme heat, flooding, or other fast-changing risks are possible. Grassday is a convenience and personalization layer, not an emergency alert service.
The numbers in the project description
| Detail | What it represents | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 25 seeded outings | Synthetic demo history for one example user | A demonstration setup, not a validation sample or accuracy statistic |
| 1–5 stars | Rating scale for genuine outings | The personal feedback signal used for preference learning |
| 14 biometeorological variables | Environmental features used by the scoring pipeline | The project description does not state the complete variable list or individual weights |
| Two hours | Length of the daily peak recommendation | A fixed decision window, not a promise that conditions remain ideal throughout it |
| Seven days | Forecast horizon named for the input feed | Forecast availability, not a guarantee that every day receives a recommendation under all conditions |
How to use the experience in practice
The public demonstration is seeded, while the intended workflow is personal and iterative. Because the project description does not publish a stable installation path or distribution channel, the steps below describe the documented experience rather than a guaranteed download procedure.

- Open the Grassday interface and allow the initial data to load. The first forecast and air-quality retrieval needs a network connection so the local cache has current input.
- Review the proposed two-hour window. Start with the recommendation card rather than scanning every available hour. The card is designed to answer the decision question immediately.
- Read the sensitivity explanation. Check which environmental factors pushed the score up or down. This helps you decide whether the recommendation fits your actual circumstances, such as clothing, mobility, allergies, or a preference not yet represented by the model.
- Go outside during the suggested period when it is safe and practical. The recommendation is not a substitute for official warnings or personal judgment about hazards.
- Rate the outing from one to five stars. Record how comfortable the outing actually felt. Over multiple outings, these ratings provide the local history that distinguishes your profile from the seeded demonstration.
- Print the field card if you want to disconnect. Use the ReportLab-generated PDF as a simple reminder of the chosen window and leave the phone at home or on a desk.
Repeated ratings are more useful than a single judgment. One unusually hot, smoky, or stressful day can reflect circumstances that are not stable preferences. Treat the model as an adaptive aid and give it enough varied outings to learn a meaningful pattern.
Grassday versus a conventional forecast screen
The following is a design comparison, not a performance ranking of unnamed weather products. It describes the axes on which Grassday positions itself.
| Decision axis | Grassday’s documented approach | Traditional forecast-dashboard approach |
|---|---|---|
| Personalization | Uses your 1–5-star outing history alongside environmental data | Usually presents forecast conditions without a personal comfort model; behavior varies by product |
| Output | One actionable two-hour window and an explanation | Multiple hourly values that leave the user to choose a period |
| Data handling | Local SQLite cache and local processing are central to the architecture | Cloud dependence and retention policies differ by service |
| Explainability | Vectorized sensitivity cues identify influential conditions | The reason for a recommendation may not be shown when no personalized recommendation exists |
| Screen use | Printable field card supports leaving the phone behind | Continued screen checking is often part of using an hourly display |
The advantage of Grassday is therefore workflow simplicity: it tries to convert several data points into one decision you can act on. The trade-off is that a single window hides detail that some users need, such as exact precipitation timing, trail conditions, or several alternative periods.

The named backend stack is FastAPI, SQLite, TabPFN v2, and ReportLab. The frontend uses React, Vite, Lucide icons, and a responsive “Living Nature” visual theme. Together, these choices separate the user interface, local persistence, model scoring, explanation, language nudge, and PDF generation into understandable components.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- FastAPI: provides the application API layer that connects the interface with data and model operations.
- SQLite: stores cached environmental data and user outing records locally.
- TabPFN v2: performs the in-context regression used for comfort scoring.
- Feature-sensitivity calculations: turn model inputs into explanatory cues.
- Ollama or fallback nudge engine: produces contextual encouragement without making the language model the sole source of the recommendation.
- ReportLab: renders the printable PDF field card.
- React, Vite, and Lucide: support the responsive interface and its iconography.
This architecture also illustrates why “local-first” is a meaningful product choice. A developer can keep personal ratings on the device and make the core decision path available even when a remote language model is unavailable. At the same time, forecast freshness and any external data-service limits remain separate concerns.
What has not been demonstrated
The project description documents a design and a seeded demo, not an independent evaluation. It does not report recommendation accuracy against measured comfort, a comparison with human choices, a clinical wellbeing outcome, or a measured increase in time spent outdoors. The 25 seeded outings, 14 variables, star ratings, and two-hour window are project parameters, not benchmark results.
That evidence boundary should shape how you use Grassday. It may be useful for turning a vague intention into a concrete plan, especially if you enjoy giving feedback and refining a personal profile. It should not be treated as proof that the selected period is objectively the healthiest or safest time to be outside.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Important limitations and safety checks
- Stale cached data: an offline recommendation can lag behind rapidly changing weather or air quality.
- Unrepresented personal factors: allergies, mobility needs, sunlight sensitivity, local pollen, terrain, and accessibility constraints may not be captured by the documented feature set.
- Forecast uncertainty: even a current forecast can be wrong, especially several days out.
- Small personal history: early recommendations may be unstable because the model has few genuine ratings to learn from.
- Hazard priority: follow official emergency, heat, smoke, flood, and severe-weather guidance before any app recommendation.
- Privacy expectations: local storage reduces the need to send outing history to a server, but users should still inspect the project’s actual storage and synchronization settings before entering sensitive information.
Who is likely to find it useful
Grassday is a good conceptual fit for someone who wants a short answer, has flexible outdoor time, and is willing to rate outings. It is also appealing if you deliberately want to reduce phone use: the printable card turns the recommendation into a physical reminder.
It is less suitable as a sole planning tool for fixed-schedule commuters, technical outdoor activities requiring detailed forecasts, or situations where official hazard information is essential. Those users may still use the recommendation as one input, but they need more precise and authoritative information than a personal comfort window provides.
Bottom line
Grassday is an ambitious local-first experiment: it combines personal 1–5-star outing feedback with forecast and air-quality data, scores a daily two-hour period, explains influential conditions, and lets you print the result. Its strongest idea is not a claim of superior prediction; it is the deliberate reduction of screen time between deciding to go outside and actually stepping out. The published evidence supports the design and demonstration, while leaving real-world accuracy and behavior change open for future evaluation.
