Google has not announced an AI tool that resets forgotten passwords. Its July 23, 2026 announcement describes an optional selfie-video sign-in method for eligible users who are locked out or do not have their usual phone or computer. Google’s documented way to recover a forgotten password remains the standard account-recovery process.

What Google actually announced

During setup, an eligible user records a short selfie video while following guided head movements. If signing in later becomes difficult, the user records another video. Google says it compares the new recording with the saved one to help confirm identity. The feature is an additional sign-in option, not a replacement for account recovery.

Google’s announcement was authored by John Gronberg, Director, Product Management, and Claire Forszt, Product Manager, Google Identity and Engagement. It tells users to check eligibility and set up the option through Google’s sign-in page. Availability is therefore not established as universal.

Google describes the feature as using a live-video check and its standard security practices to detect suspicious sign-ins. Those are Google’s descriptions of its system, not independent evidence of how effective the method is.

How the selfie-video option handles privacy

Google says the video is recorded and securely stored with the user’s consent, encrypted at rest, used only to help the user sign in unless the user chooses additional sharing, and deletable at any time. The company’s announcement says, “Your selfie video is yours and you’re in control.”

Enrollment is required in advance. A person who never set up the option cannot rely on it as an immediate substitute for the ordinary recovery process.

What to do if you forgot your Google password

Google’s reader-facing guidance is “How to recover your Google Account or Gmail.” It covers forgotten passwords or usernames and situations where verification codes are unavailable.

  1. Start Google’s Account recovery process.
  2. Answer the questions as accurately as possible to confirm that you own the account.
  3. Reset the password when Google prompts you.

Google says changed recovery information can take up to seven days to take effect. Do not share your password or verification codes. Google also warns against services that claim to provide account or password support. If the account belongs to a workplace, school, or another organization, contact its administrator because the normal personal-account steps may not work.

Selfie video versus ordinary recovery

Aspect Standard recovery Selfie-video sign-in
Purpose Forgotten passwords or usernames, and unavailable verification codes Backup account access for eligible users who have trouble signing in
Identity check Questions about the account and available recovery factors Guided movements and comparison with a previously saved video
Setup Uses account information and existing recovery methods Requires advance enrollment
Stored material Recovery details and verification factors An encrypted selfie video that Google says the user can delete
Availability Google’s established recovery route Eligibility must be checked; universal access is not stated

These options address different situations. The announcement does not say that selfie video replaces password recovery or that it automatically changes a password.

Keep more than one way to get back in

A backup sign-in method does not make outdated recovery details safe. Google recommends maintaining multiple methods, including Recovery Contacts, 2-Step Verification, and passkeys.

Recovery Contacts

Google’s 2026 guidance says Recovery Contacts can help confirm identity when other recovery options are unavailable. They do not receive access to the account or its personal information.

Passkeys

Passkeys can use a fingerprint, face scan, or a device screen lock such as a PIN. Google says biometric data remains on the device and is not shared with Google. Because a passkey is tied to both a device and its unlock method, create one only on a device you personally own and use; anyone who can unlock that device with its passkey may be able to access the account.

Physical security keys

FIDO2 hardware security keys are supported on compatible devices and accounts. Google’s at-risk sign-in guidance says a trusted passkey or physical security key may sometimes be required to restore a restricted sign-in method or speed activation of a new authentication or recovery factor. A security key must be set up with the account. It is optional for this selfie-video feature and does not reset a password by itself.

Why the AI wording is misleading

The announcement includes an AI-generated summary, but that summary is not evidence that the selfie-video system uses AI to reset passwords. The official description is narrower: Google compares a later selfie video with an enrolled video to help verify identity. The documented password-reset action still occurs through Google’s account-recovery flow after ownership checks.

No feature-specific statistic about selfie-video enrollment, success rates, or recovery outcomes is provided in the announcement or current recovery guidance.

The Bottom Line

Google’s July 2026 feature is an optional, eligibility-based selfie-video sign-in backup—not an AI password-reset service. Enroll only if the option is offered to your account, keep recovery details current, and maintain another trusted method such as a passkey, Recovery Contact, or compatible security key.
