Fortnite Battle Royale Sprites are collectible battlefield helpers. Equipping one grants its own Sprite Power, such as extra loot, shield recovery, movement benefits, information, or combat effects. To keep a Sprite for later matches, carry it to an Extraction Site, activate the site, defend the pickup, and interact with the arriving crate. Elimination before banking leaves the found Sprite on the island for another player.
After extraction, the Sprite enters your Collection. Sprite Dust earned from successful extractions can summon an extracted Sprite before a future match or improve its powers and loot. The roster, tools, supported modes, and exact interface can change with Fortnite updates, so the version-specific details below are identified as such.
What a Fortnite Sprite does
Epic describes Sprites as little helpers that can be found and equipped during a match to provide a special Sprite Power. A Sprite is therefore more than a cosmetic collectible: carrying the right one changes what your character can do or what information and loot you can access.

A Water Sprite can support a squad that is fighting around water, a Ghost Sprite can help you disengage after reloading, and a Seven Sprite can provide information about enemy movement. Other Sprites improve chest rewards, upgrade weapons, or create defensive items. You do not need to use every power in the same way; compare the effect and its trigger with the situation you expect to face.

Sprites are also part of a collection loop. A Sprite found during a match is temporary until you extract it. Once banked, it can be summoned and developed in later matches instead of being lost at the end of the current game.
The Sprite collection and extraction loop
- Find a Sprite. Explore the island and open chests while watching for a Sprite. The exact spawn behavior and available types can change between updates.
- Equip or carry it. Equipping activates its power. Decide whether the effect is worth occupying your available Sprite slot and whether you can safely reach an extraction point.
- Choose when to extract. An unbanked Sprite is at risk. You can continue looting or fighting for a better position, but elimination before extraction drops the found Sprite on the battlefield.
- Reach an Extraction Site. At the site, activate the panel. A timer begins while the pickup is prepared.
- Defend the pickup. Stay alive and protect the area while the extraction crate arrives. Other players can contest the process, so treat the timer as an objective rather than a harmless interaction.
- Bank the Sprites. When the crate is available, interact with it to bank the Sprites you are carrying or have equipped. Successful extraction adds them to your Collection and awards Sprite Dust.
- Use the collection later. Extracted Sprites can be summoned before future matches. Dust can also support upgrades, so extraction has both an immediate collection benefit and a progression benefit.
GamesRadar+ describes the same practical sequence: activate the Extraction Site panel, wait through the timer, and interact with the crate to bank carried and equipped Sprites. Epic’s rules are the authority for whether the system, rewards, or interface has changed.
How to bank a Sprite safely
Before leaving the find location
- Read the Sprite’s power and identify its trigger. A conditional effect may be valuable only if you can reliably meet that condition.
- Check your route to an Extraction Site and identify cover, vehicles, mobility, and nearby escape paths.
- Remember that extraction is an objective other players may watch. Arriving early does not guarantee a safe crate.
At the Extraction Site
- Interact with the site’s activation panel.
- Remain close enough to defend the objective while the timer runs.
- Use the terrain and squad positions to watch likely approaches; the timer gives opponents an opportunity to contest you.
- When the crate arrives, interact with it rather than assuming the Sprite was automatically saved.
If you are eliminated
Epic’s support guidance is explicit: a Sprite found in a match remains on the battlefield if its carrier is eliminated before banking it. The next player may be able to claim it, but your Collection does not receive that copy. This is why extraction should be treated as the final step of collecting, not as an optional bonus after a successful fight.
Portable Extractor and other Gizmos
Epic’s v41.00 notes describe Portable Extractor as a way to extract an equipped Sprite from anywhere on the island. It changes the positioning problem: instead of travelling to a fixed site, a player with the item can use the documented portable option. The precise activation prompt and inventory behavior should be read from the current in-game UI.
Later v41 updates also document the Sprite Locator and Lucky Locator. Their functions and availability are season-dependent, and the published notes do not establish a permanent, exhaustive specification for either item. Open the current Gizmo Wheel description before building a route around one.
| Gizmo or method | What is established | What to verify in the live season |
|---|---|---|
| Extraction Site | Activate the site, defend while the timer runs, then interact with the arriving crate to bank carried or equipped Sprites. | Site locations, timing, contest conditions, and reward presentation. |
| Portable Extractor | Epic describes it as extracting an equipped Sprite from anywhere on the island. | Whether it is currently obtainable, its charge or use restrictions, and the exact activation prompt. |
| Sprite Locator | Listed in v41.20/v41.30 update material as a Sprite-related Gizmo. | Current effect, source, charges, and whether it is enabled this season. |
| Lucky Locator | Listed in v41.20/v41.30 update material as a Sprite-related Gizmo. | Current effect, source, charges, and whether it is enabled this season. |
Epic’s v41 update notes state that Gizmos are available only in unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build. Gizmos cannot be traded or dropped when you are eliminated, and they expire at the end of the season. The timer shown in the game is the authoritative expiration date for your current items.
Sprite powers in the v41 roster
The following effects come from Epic’s v41.00, v41.20, and v41.30 materials. They are a version-specific reference, not a promise that every type remains enabled or unchanged in a later season.
| Sprite | Documented power or trigger | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Earth | Provides a chance of finding extra rare chest items. | Best suited to players prioritizing chest value and longer looting routes. The effect is chance-based, so it does not guarantee a rare item. |
| Fire | Creates a burst after you deal sufficient damage. | Rewards sustained pressure and can add area or finishing damage after a fight has already started. The exact threshold is update-dependent. |
| Water | Replenishes shields while you are in water for you and nearby squad members. | Useful for teams that can deliberately fight or rotate around water. It is conditional on the environment and proximity to squadmates. |
| Duck | Replenishes shields while you are emoting or jamming. | Provides recovery during a qualifying emote action, but the action can leave you exposed if used in an unsafe position. |
| Ghost | Grants a short cloak after you reload. | Reload timing becomes a disengagement or repositioning opportunity. The cloak is brief, so it should not be treated as permanent invisibility. |
| Demon | Siphons health and shields on an elimination. | Most valuable to aggressive players who can secure eliminations; it offers no equivalent benefit when you fail to finish an opponent. |
| King | Increases pickaxe damage. | Improves harvesting or close-range pickaxe attacks, but its value is lower when your plan depends mainly on firearms. |
| Dream | Grants a random item at each level and legendary loot at maximum level. | Combines uncertain short-term rewards with a valuable maximum-level payoff. Level progression must be maintained across matches. |
| Punk | Described by Epic as “Possibly nothing… or infinitely something.” | The wording signals an intentionally uncertain or unusual effect. Do not build a precise strategy around a result that the current description does not define. |
| Zero Point | Spawns a Shield Bubble Jr. when you use a healing item on yourself. | Links personal healing to temporary protection. The trigger is self-use of a healing item, not simply carrying one. |
| Air | Improves sprinting and jumping and prevents fall damage. | A movement and rotation choice that can make vertical routes safer and traversal faster. |
| Batman | Enables a midair Bat Cape glide and improves rare Sprite finds in chests. | Combines mobility with collection-oriented chest value. Its usefulness depends on whether the current loot route offers enough chest opportunities. |
| Seven | Reveals enemy footsteps. | Provides directional information for tracking or avoiding opponents, especially when visual sightlines are poor. |
| Lootin’ Llama | Can upgrade a weapon when you open ammo boxes. | Rewards players who search ammo boxes and can turn ordinary looting into weapon progression. |
| Peeky Peely | Marks nearby rare variants or enemies carrying them, while also revealing your location. | Offers information about valuable targets but creates a counter-risk because your own position is exposed. |
The table combines powers from different v41 updates. If a Sprite is missing from your match, has a different trigger, or displays another description, trust the current in-game text and update notes over an older roster.
How to choose a Sprite
There is no universally strongest Sprite because the benefit depends on your route, team, and willingness to accept risk. Use the effect, trigger, and extraction risk as three separate questions.
| Your priority | Potential fit from the v41 descriptions | Question to ask before equipping |
|---|---|---|
| More loot | Earth, Dream, Batman, or Lootin’ Llama | Will you open enough chests or ammo boxes to activate the benefit before extraction? |
| Movement and safer rotations | Air or Batman | Will jumping, gliding, or fall protection help you reach the next objective faster than a combat power would? |
| Shield recovery | Water, Duck, or Zero Point | Can you safely meet the water, emote, or self-healing condition? |
| Combat sustain | Fire, Demon, or Ghost | Does your playstyle reliably deal damage, secure eliminations, or reload during contested fights? |
| Information | Seven or Peeky Peely | Can your squad exploit the information, and can you survive the location reveal attached to Peeky Peely? |
| Collection progression | Dream or any Sprite you are trying to level | Are you prepared to extract repeatedly rather than risk the Sprite in an unnecessary late-game fight? |
A conditional power is not automatically weak. It is weak only when its trigger does not match your plan. For example, Water is a natural choice for a squad that can hold a shoreline, while Duck is a poor emergency-healing plan if you have no safe moment to emote.

Leveling, Sprite Dust, and Mastery
Epic’s v41.00 notes say Sprite leveling comes from exploration, eliminations, and extraction. Exploration includes finding and opening chests. This means progression is not limited to winning fights: a player who searches, survives, and completes extractions can also advance a Sprite.

- Summoning: spend Dust to call an already extracted Sprite before a future match.
- Upgrading: spend Dust to improve a Sprite’s powers and loot potential.
Extracting a max-level Sprite grants Mastery and progression rewards. Epic recommends pursuing maximum level over multiple matches rather than expecting one match to complete the process. The available notes do not establish universal Dust costs, a fixed number of matches, or permanent upgrade values; those figures can depend on the live season and current interface.
A practical progression routine
- Use a Sprite whose trigger fits your normal route, so exploration and combat naturally contribute to its level.
- Extract before taking an avoidable final fight. A banked copy is more valuable for progression than an unbanked copy that disappears on elimination.
- Spend Dust only after checking the current upgrade or summon description. Costs and benefits can change with updates.
- Repeat the loop across matches until the Sprite reaches maximum level, then collect the Mastery reward shown by the game.
How to summon an extracted Sprite again
Extraction is what makes a Sprite available beyond the match in which you found it. After the crate interaction succeeds, open the game’s Sprite Collection or equivalent pre-match collection interface, select the extracted Sprite, and use the displayed Sprite Dust option to summon it for a later match. The current UI may rename buttons or move the collection panel, so follow the labels shown in your build.
Summoning is not the same as recovering a Sprite after elimination. If you were eliminated before banking, that particular found copy never entered your Collection. You must find another copy in a later match or use a Sprite that was extracted previously.

Mode and season restrictions
Epic’s Fortnite Battle Royale Support page says Sprites are unavailable in competitive modes. If you are playing a competitive playlist and cannot find a Sprite or its collection interaction, that is an intended mode restriction rather than necessarily a bug.
Epic’s v41.20 notes place Gizmos in unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build. They also state that Gizmos expire at season end. Because the exact date is shown by the in-game timer, check that timer before saving a Gizmo for a later session. A new season can change the roster, extraction tools, power descriptions, and where the items appear.
What to check after an update
- Open the current Sprite descriptions instead of relying on a saved list of powers.
- Inspect the Gizmo Wheel for enabled tools and their use instructions.
- Confirm that your playlist is unranked Battle Royale or Zero Build if you are trying to use a Gizmo.
- Read the expiration timer on each Gizmo.
- Expect old guides to omit newly added types such as Air, Batman, Seven, Lootin’ Llama, or Peeky Peely, or to describe effects that have since changed.
Battle Royale Sprites versus the Creative Earth Sprite device
Fortnite Creative has an Earth Sprite device with a different purpose. A creator places the device on an island and configures it to exchange weapons or other gear for loot. Settings can include team or class access and trade limits.
That device is not the Battle Royale Earth Sprite. It does not use the Battle Royale extraction-and-collection loop, and its creator-configured trade behavior should not be confused with Earth’s chance of extra rare chest items. When a guide says “Earth Sprite,” check whether it is discussing a Battle Royale power or a Creative device before following the instructions.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common Sprite problems
| Symptom | Likely explanation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No Sprite appears in the match | Your playlist may be competitive, the type may be disabled this season, or the roster may have changed. | Confirm the mode, inspect current update information, and use the in-game descriptions rather than an older roster. |
| The Sprite vanished after you died | It was found but not banked at an Extraction Site. | Return to the collection loop in a later match. Only a successful crate interaction saves it to your Collection. |
| The extraction did not save the Sprite | The panel may not have been activated, the timer may have been interrupted, or the crate may not have been interacted with. | Activate the site, remain alive through the timer, wait for the crate, and interact with it when it arrives. |
| A power seems different from a guide | Sprite abilities are update-dependent and later v41 notes add or change types. | Read the current Sprite card and patch notes. Treat older tables as historical references. |
| A Gizmo cannot be traded or dropped | Epic states that Gizmos cannot be traded or dropped when eliminated. | Use the Gizmo during the current match or accept that elimination will not let you hand it to another player. |
| A Gizmo is no longer usable | Gizmos expire at the end of the season. | Check the in-game expiration timer and use an unexpired item in an eligible unranked mode. |
| The Creative Earth Sprite does not grant a Battle Royale power | You are using the creator-configured Creative device. | Follow the island creator’s trade settings; use Battle Royale matches for the collectible Sprite system. |
Key takeaways
- Equip a Sprite for its specific power, and choose it by trigger and tactical objective rather than by name alone.
- Extraction is the protection step: activate a site, defend the timer, and interact with the crate to bank the Sprite.
- Elimination before banking loses the found copy from your progression.
- Sprite Dust supports future summoning and upgrades; exploration, eliminations, and extraction advance leveling.
- Abilities, Gizmos, supported playlists, and expiration rules are seasonal. Verify the current in-game UI.
- Competitive modes do not support Sprites, and v41 Gizmos are restricted to unranked Battle Royale and Zero Build.
- Creative’s Earth Sprite device is a separate creator-configured gear-for-loot feature.
