There is no single fastest VPN across all tests. Tom’s Guide named Proton VPN fastest overall in its April 2026 test round; TechRadar named PrivadoVPN fastest overall by peak WireGuard throughput; and Security.org ranked NordVPN first using its own method. Those are separate publications’ findings—not a shared lab verdict or a guarantee of the speeds you will get.

Which VPNs were fastest in the reported 2026 tests?

The results depend on what each publication measured. Tom’s Guide’s April 2026 round favored Proton VPN, TechRadar’s current comparison highlighted PrivadoVPN’s WireGuard peak, and Security.org’s ranking put NordVPN first. Their figures use different methods, so they should be read side by side as distinct findings, not combined into a single league table.

Publication and test Reported result What the result means
Tom’s Guide, April 2026 [source] Proton VPN reached 1,548 Mbps on a 10 Gbps test line over a long-distance route; its local result was 1,475 Mbps. Tom’s Guide’s results in that test round. The publication also reports a 950 Mbps result in an earlier round using a 1 Gbps line.
TechRadar, current comparison [source] PrivadoVPN reached 2,334 Mbps using WireGuard. Proton VPN recorded 1,475 Mbps locally and more than 1,500 Mbps on a US-to-UK route. TechRadar’s reported peak-throughput results; they are not directly comparable to another publisher’s test unless the conditions match.
Security.org, 2026 ranking [source] NordVPN ranked first, followed by Proton VPN, IPVanish and Private Internet Access. Reported download-speed losses were 5.78%, 8.18%, 4% and 4.84%, respectively. A ranking and percentage-loss figures under Security.org’s method—not peak Mbps figures.

Security.org also reported substantially different upload losses for some services: 84.26% for Private Internet Access. Download and upload results can tell different stories, so check both when the source reports them.

Why do VPN speed rankings disagree?

A speed result reflects the test setup as much as the VPN. Raw Mbps, percentage speed loss, latency and jitter measure different things. Even two tests reporting Mbps may use different baseline connections, server routes, protocols, hardware and times of day.

  • Baseline and test capacity: A result depends on the connection’s speed without the VPN. Tom’s Guide describes using an uncontested 10 Gbps test line in its 2026 round; its earlier 950 Mbps result came from a 1 Gbps round. Those test-line capacities are not speeds a reader should expect from a home connection.
  • Server location and route: A nearby server and a cross-border route can produce different results. A test that favors one route may not predict performance on the route you use most.
  • Protocol: WireGuard, OpenVPN and a provider’s proprietary protocol can perform differently. TechRadar calls ExpressVPN its fastest OpenVPN provider, while its PrivadoVPN peak cited above used WireGuard.
  • Time and repeatability: Network congestion and the time of day can change results. Tom’s Guide says its tests include morning and evening runs.
  • Latency and jitter: High download throughput does not necessarily mean responsive gaming or smooth calls. TechRadar identifies NordVPN as strongest for gaming latency and jitter in its comparison, a different distinction from peak download speed.

AMTSO’s 2025 VPN Testing Guidance recommends using the same location for all VPN apps and transparent, reproducible speed-test tools. It cautions that choosing a test target solely by lowest ping can lead to suboptimal comparisons. Read AMTSO’s guidance.

How to choose the fastest VPN for your use

Start with the task and route that matter to you. A top-line download result is only useful if the test resembles your own connection, destination and device.

  • 【AC1200 Dual-band Wireless Router】Simultaneous dual-band with wireless speed up to 300 Mbps (2.4GHz) + 867 Mbps (5GHz). 2.4GHz band can handles some simple tasks like emails or web browsing while bandwidth intensive tasks such as gaming or 4K video streaming can be handled by the 5GHz band.*Speed tests are conducted on a local network. Real-world speeds may differ depending on your network configuration.*
  • 【Easy Setup】Please refer to the User Manual and the Unboxing & Setup video guide on Amazon for detailed setup instructions and methods for connecting to the Internet.
  • 【Pocket-friendly】Lightweight design(145g) which designed for your next trip or adventure. Alongside its portable, compact design makes it easy to take with you on the go.

  • 【Keep your Internet Safe】IPv6 supported. OpenVPN & WireGuard pre-installed, compatible with 30+ VPN service providers. Cloudflare encryption supported to protect the privacy.
  • For large downloads: Look for repeated throughput results, the no-VPN baseline and the protocol used. A single peak is less informative than results across routes and test times.
  • For long-distance connections: Prioritize tests on routes similar to yours. Tom’s Guide’s Proton VPN figure of 1,548 Mbps was its best result on a long-distance route, while TechRadar reports Proton VPN above 1,500 Mbps on a US-to-UK route; these are each publication’s separate results.
  • For gaming and calls: Compare latency and jitter as well as throughput. A VPN can download quickly but still add delay or variation that affects interactive use.
  • If you need OpenVPN: Check performance specifically on OpenVPN and confirm the protocol is available in the app for your operating system. TechRadar labels ExpressVPN fastest for OpenVPN in its comparison, but that label is specific to its reported test.
  • If you want a free option: TechRadar reports Windscribe’s free service at 1,594 Mbps using WireGuard, alongside a 10 GB free-plan data limit. That figure is a reported test result, not a promise for every connection; the data limit may matter more than peak speed for regular use.

How to read speed claims without being misled

  1. Identify the metric. Check whether the claim is peak or average Mbps, percentage speed loss, latency or jitter. Do not compare values from different metric types as though they were equivalent.
  2. Check the baseline and route. Note the no-VPN connection speed, test server locations and route distance. A provider’s result on a nearby server does not establish its performance on a distant route.
  3. Check protocol and platform. A WireGuard result does not establish OpenVPN performance. Confirm that the tested protocol is available on the device you plan to use.
  4. Look for a transparent, repeatable method. AMTSO recommends comparable locations and transparent tools. Its guidance quotes: “For transparency and reproducibility of test methods, industry-standard speed test tools such as OOKLA, speed.cloudflare.com, nperf.com, etc. are recommended.”
  5. Keep each publisher’s figures with its method. No shared raw dataset across these publications establishes a normalized overall winner. Treat each ranking as a result of that publication’s own test.

What provider-published speed claims can—and cannot—show

NordVPN’s own page summarizes a West Coast Labs test with an average of 817 Mbps in 2025 and reports on an Artifact Security comparison in 2026. These are provider-published accounts; the underlying lab report was not independently inspected for this comparison. NordVPN also notes that congestion, server choice, distance and a user’s internet connection can affect observed speeds. See NordVPN’s provider-published speed information and its account of the 2026 comparison.

Provider-reported results can add context, but they should not be presented as independent measurements unless the underlying testing and its method have been verified. They also cannot establish how fast a service will be on your route and connection.

Bottom line: the fastest VPN depends on the test and the job

For Tom’s Guide’s April 2026 test round, the answer was Proton VPN; for TechRadar’s reported WireGuard peak, it was PrivadoVPN; and Security.org ranked NordVPN first under its own 2026 method. Choose by the route, protocol and performance measure you actually need, and treat every published speed as a test-specific result rather than a personal guarantee.
