ChatGPT: how to share and export conversations depends on your goal: use Share for a viewable link to one conversation, or use Profile → Settings → Data Controls → Export for a ZIP containing chat history and other account data. Shared links can be viewed by anyone who obtains them, while exports do not rebuild chats in another account.

Sharing is the quickest way to let another person read one conversation online. Exporting is the better choice for backing up account data, retaining many conversations, making a data-access request, or processing the data offline.

How do you share a ChatGPT conversation with a link?
To share a ChatGPT conversation from the desktop website, open the conversation, choose the conversation’s Share control, review the preview, and copy the generated link or choose an available sharing option. Depending on the rollout, the Share control may appear at the top right of the conversation or in the conversation’s sidebar menu; labels and placement can vary by platform, account, and workspace.

- Create the link, then select Copy link or another available sharing option.
- Open the link in a private or incognito browser window if you want to check what a recipient can see without relying on your signed-in session.
OpenAI says shared links are available on chatgpt.com and the iOS and Android apps, although availability can vary by account or rollout. A generated personal shared URL generally begins with https://chatgpt.com/share/. That address pattern can help you recognize the link, but HTTPS does not make the conversation private.
How do you share a ChatGPT conversation on iPhone, iPad, or Android?
Open the correct conversation in the ChatGPT app, use its Share control, review the preview if one is shown, and copy the link or send it through the device’s share sheet. On mobile web, the browser may open the phone or tablet’s native share sheet instead, so the final options depend on the browser and operating system.
Confirm the conversation before generating the link. If you send the link through Messages, Mail, or another app, the recipient receives the URL you selected; the operating system’s share sheet does not change the privacy model of the shared conversation.
What does a ChatGPT shared link contain?
A personal shared link represents a snapshot of the conversation available when the link is created or updated. Later messages are not automatically added to an ordinary personal shared link. If a response is still generating, the unfinished turn may not appear, so finish the response and create or update the link afterward.
Sharing an individual assistant response can create a link scoped to that response rather than the entire conversation. Check the preview to confirm whether you are sharing the full conversation or only the selected response.
The old behavior that let someone continue the original shared conversation has been deprecated across ChatGPT plans. When a viewer replies to a shared conversation, ChatGPT creates a copy in that viewer’s conversation history rather than letting the viewer jointly edit the original. Business and Enterprise workspace behavior can differ because workspace controls apply.
Are ChatGPT shared links private?
No. Anyone who obtains a personal ChatGPT shared link can view the conversation included in that link. OpenAI says the shared link does not include the sharer’s name or other personal information, but the missing name does not make the conversation confidential or access-controlled. OpenAI’s Shared Links FAQ is the current source for the documented privacy behavior.
Before sharing, check the conversation for:
- Names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, account identifiers, or other identifying details.
- Passwords, API keys, authentication codes, private documents, or pasted secrets.
- Medical, financial, legal, employment, or relationship discussions.
- Confidential business information, proprietary prompts, customer data, or employer material.
- Uploaded files or text copied from documents that the recipient is not authorized to see.
Do not describe a shared link as secure merely because the URL begins with https://. The important risk is that anyone who receives the URL can pass it to someone else. OpenAI’s current guidance does not provide ordinary personal shared links with granular permissions or an expiration-date option.

How do you delete or invalidate a ChatGPT shared link?
Manage personal shared links from Settings → Data Controls → Shared links → Manage, then delete an individual link or remove shared links through the options shown in your account. OpenAI documents this management path in its Shared Links FAQ.
Deleting or unsharing the link stops access through that URL. Deleting the original conversation also deletes its associated shared link. Neither action can remotely erase a copy that another person already imported into their own ChatGPT history, copied into a document, downloaded, or otherwise saved.
How do you export ChatGPT history and account data?
For an eligible signed-in personal account, request a ChatGPT export through Profile → Settings → Data Controls → Export. The export is account-level rather than a documented single-chat download.

According to OpenAI’s current export guidance, an export can take up to seven days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after the notification is received. Keep access to the email inbox or phone number associated with the account because ownership verification may be required.
Which ChatGPT accounts can use the in-product export?
OpenAI’s current help guidance says the in-product export is available for eligible signed-in personal accounts, including Free, Plus, and Pro, and may be available for eligible ChatGPT Edu workspaces when an administrator enables it. Logged-out users cannot request the export through ChatGPT, and Business and Enterprise workspace settings do not provide the same in-product export workflow.
Plan availability and workspace policies can change. Business and Enterprise administrators or workspace documentation may provide different approved data-access procedures.
What is included in a ChatGPT data export?
The ZIP contains chat history and other relevant account data. The exact file names and structure can change, so do not assume that every export has an identical directory layout. The export is a machine-readable account archive, not a neatly formatted collection of one PDF or Word file per conversation.
You may need to extract the ZIP, locate JSON or other included files, open them with a text editor or suitable viewer, and copy selected conversations into a document. If you need a readable transcript, use the conversation interface, copy the relevant content, or try the browser’s print function separately.

OpenAI documents shared-link metadata in a shared_conversations file. The metadata can include information such as the shared-link ID, conversation ID, title, and anonymity setting; the broader export structure remains subject to change. Can you export just one ChatGPT conversation?
OpenAI’s documented export workflow requests account-level data rather than a clearly documented single-conversation export. For one conversation, choose the method that matches the required output:

Browser printing and copying are practical alternatives, not OpenAI’s official account-export feature. Asking ChatGPT to reformat a conversation into a transcript creates a reformatted copy and should not be treated as an authoritative export of the original account data.

How do you move ChatGPT conversations to another account?
There is no full account-merge or chat-history migration function. OpenAI’s documented workaround is to export the original personal account, extract the archive, and upload the relevant JSON to a new conversation in the personal account you want to keep.
- Export data from the original account.
- Extract the downloaded ZIP.
- Find
conversations.jsonor the relevant numbered conversation JSON files. OpenAI notes that larger exports may contain numbered conversation files. - Sign in to the personal ChatGPT account you want to keep.
- Start a new conversation.
- Upload the JSON file or files.
- Ask ChatGPT to use the uploaded data as reference material.
According to OpenAI’s account-transfer guidance, this workaround does not recreate each old conversation as an individual chat, restore the old sidebar, merge the accounts, move a subscription, or transfer memories, custom instructions, GPTs, files, settings, or workspace access.
If the JSON is too large to upload, split it, upload numbered files separately, or upload only the conversations you actually need. Treat the uploaded archive as reference material rather than expecting the new account to behave as though it owns the original chats.
What are the Business, Enterprise, and Edu differences?
Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces do not necessarily follow personal ChatGPT sharing and export behavior. Workspace membership, administrator controls, external-viewer restrictions, and media or file rules can change what a link does.

Enterprise behavior around later messages and shared-chat handling can differ from personal links. Do not assume that a personal shared-link rule applies to every Enterprise workspace; check the current workspace documentation or ask the administrator.

Why is the ChatGPT Share button missing?
A missing Share button can have several causes, including disabled chat-history settings, a Business or Enterprise workspace restriction, a changed interface, a temporary or private chat, a logged-out session, or content and media restrictions. Check the account type, workspace, sign-in state, and current Data Controls settings instead of assuming one cause.
OpenAI says sharing is disabled for conversations created while the relevant chat-history setting is disabled. Current interface labels may differ from older descriptions, so use the labels shown in your account and consult the current OpenAI Shared Links FAQ.

Why does a shared link show a loading screen?
A newly created shared link may take a few seconds before the conversation becomes viewable. Wait briefly, then refresh or reopen the link. If the link remains inaccessible, confirm that the link was copied completely and that workspace restrictions do not prevent the viewer from opening it.
Why does the shared conversation look incomplete?
An incomplete shared conversation may have been created while a response was still generating, or the link may represent only one assistant response. Finish generation, reopen the conversation, review the preview, and create or update the shared link again.
Why did the ChatGPT export email not arrive?
- Check the inbox associated with the account that requested the export.
- Check spam, junk, and promotions folders.
- Check SMS if the account uses a phone number for notifications.
- Confirm that the request was made for the intended ChatGPT account.
- Allow up to seven days, as stated in OpenAI’s current guidance.
- Avoid repeatedly submitting requests while an existing request is processing.
If the notification still does not arrive after the stated period, submit a new request or use the Privacy Portal. OpenAI’s export instructions identify the Privacy Portal as an alternative route for requesting a copy of account data.
What should you do if the ChatGPT export link expired?
The current export download link expires 24 hours after the notification is received. If the link has expired, request a new export or use the Privacy Portal rather than relying on the old message.
What should you do if the exported JSON is too large?
Split the JSON, upload numbered files separately, or select only the conversations needed for the new account. Large exports are reference material for a new chat, not a direct import database.

Which ChatGPT sharing or export method should you use?
Use a shared link when the recipient only needs to read a safe online snapshot. Use a data export when you need comprehensive retention, offline processing, or a privacy/data-access request. Use copy-and-paste or browser printing when the real requirement is a controlled, readable transcript.
