ChatGPT and Claude do not automatically share their built-in memories. To give both assistants access to the same information, connect each to a compatible external memory store and select the same project in both apps. SharedMemory documents this setup through a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) connector, but its instructions do not verify that connecting two assistants takes two minutes.
What shared memory means—and what it does not
Each assistant’s built-in memory or project context is separate. A common external store can give multiple compatible assistants access to the same saved information, but each app must be connected and authorized individually.
SharedMemory’s v2 documentation describes a remote MCP connector at https://api.sharedmemory.ai/mcp. The connector exposes memory tools such as saving, searching, retrieving, updating, and deleting information. SharedMemory says the connector routes those tools through the same memory pipeline as its direct API. That is the vendor’s description, not independent testing of its performance or security.

The service’s developer quickstart says onboarding takes under five minutes, but that is not a measured duration for connecting ChatGPT and Claude. Setup time will depend on account access, consent, and the steps required in each app.

Connect ChatGPT to the shared store
SharedMemory’s guide documents custom MCP connectors for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise. Menu labels and availability can change, so check the current app if a step differs.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Connectors.
- Select Add a custom connector.
- Enter
https://api.sharedmemory.ai/mcp, then select Connect. - Sign in to SharedMemory and select the project you want ChatGPT to use.
- Review the requested access on the consent screen and allow the connection only if the scopes are appropriate for that project.
To check that the connection is useful, try a low-risk fact, such as: “Remember that I prefer TypeScript with strict mode and tabs for indentation.” Then ask ChatGPT about that preference.

Connect Claude to the same project
SharedMemory’s instructions cover Claude web and Claude Desktop. They do not describe the same menu route for Claude Code, which uses a different configuration path.

- In Claude, open Settings → Integrations.
- Under Custom integrations, choose Add integration, then Custom MCP server.
- Enter
https://api.sharedmemory.ai/mcpand select Connect. - Sign in to SharedMemory and choose the same project you selected for ChatGPT.
- Review the consent screen and allow the connection if its requested scopes fit your intended use.
Test retrieval by asking Claude about a harmless detail you saved through ChatGPT. The shared project selection is the key operational step: choosing different projects means the assistants will not be using the same memory space.

For developers, Anthropic’s memory tool is an interface that an application must implement; documented storage options include files, databases, cloud storage, and encrypted files. It is not a consumer setting that automatically syncs every assistant.
Check access and protect the information you store
SharedMemory says its connector uses OAuth 2.1, issues an app-scoped token, displays requested scopes during consent, and lets users revoke access from Dashboard → Connectors. Read the actual consent screen before approving, and choose a project containing only information you are comfortable making available to that assistant. The cited documentation does not establish that sensitive personal information should be stored in a third-party service.

If you stop using an assistant with the store, revoke its connector access from the dashboard. Revoking access is different from deleting information already saved in the memory project; use the service’s memory controls if you also want to remove stored facts.

Troubleshoot a connection that fails or cannot retrieve memories
- ChatGPT reports “Connection failed”: SharedMemory says an incomplete consent flow may cause this error. Its guide recommends reconnecting because the OAuth code is single-use.
- The browser redirect does not complete in Claude: SharedMemory’s guide says a blocked redirect can prevent setup. Check whether the browser or an extension is blocking it, then retry the connection.
- Claude connects but its tools do not appear: SharedMemory recommends toggling the connector off and on if tools are still missing after 30 seconds.
- An assistant cannot recall what the other saved: Confirm both apps are authorized and that each points to the same SharedMemory project. Then test with a specific, non-sensitive fact rather than a vague question.
These recovery steps come from the vendor’s setup guides; they are not independently verified troubleshooting results.
