To keep S mode, use Office in a web browser. If you need the desktop installer and it is not available in Microsoft Store, Microsoft’s route is to switch out of S mode—a free, one-way change.
Can you install desktop Office without leaving S mode?
Usually, not if the desktop Office installer is unavailable in Microsoft Store. Windows in S mode allows apps from the Store; it blocks ordinary desktop installers from other sources. Microsoft says to switch out of S mode to install an app that is not available in the Store. HP likewise describes Microsoft Store apps as the supported app path in S mode and notes that legacy Win32 apps do not run there.
Switching out is free, but it is one-way through the normal switch process: you cannot use that process to return the device to S mode. Before switching, consider whether the browser version of Office meets your needs.
Use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint while keeping S mode
Office for the web runs in a supported browser, so it does not require installing the desktop Office apps or changing out of S mode. Microsoft offers free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint at Microsoft365.com; sign in with a Microsoft account. OneNote is also available in a browser.

Online documents require an internet connection. Web apps cover common tasks, but they do not provide every feature available in the desktop apps. This is the practical choice if you mainly need to create or edit everyday documents and want to retain S mode.
Office for the web versus desktop Office

Check your HP Stream before installing desktop Office
“HP Stream” covers different configurations, so the model name alone does not establish which Windows release, memory, or storage your laptop has. HP lists at least one Stream 11-ak0053dx configuration with Windows 11 Home in S mode, but that does not identify the configuration of another Stream.
- Identify the exact device and Windows version. Check the model number and Windows edition/version in the device’s system settings, then compare them with the requirements for the Office product you intend to use.
- Check RAM and free storage. Microsoft’s Windows 11 minimums are 4 GB RAM and 64 GB or larger storage. The storage figure is a Windows platform minimum, not an Office installation requirement, and does not tell you how much space is free on your laptop.
- Check the Office edition’s requirements. Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM (or 2 GB for 32-bit) and 4 GB available disk space for Microsoft 365 home desktop apps on Windows. Office 2024 lists Windows 11, 4 GB RAM, and 4 GB available disk space. Requirements can depend on edition and architecture, so verify the current product requirements before purchase or installation.
- Decide whether the one-way switch is worthwhile. If the desktop installer is unavailable in Microsoft Store, switch only if you need the installed apps and accept that you cannot return to S mode through the normal switch process.
Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee a good experience on every Stream. The exact model, available storage, and other configuration details matter.
How to switch out of S mode
Use Microsoft’s current S mode instructions for the Windows version on your device, and confirm the one-way consequence before proceeding. Store labels and screens may change.

- Open Settings and go to System > Activation on Windows 11, or Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
- Find the section for switching out of S mode and select the link that opens Microsoft Store.
- In Microsoft Store, select Get on the switch-out page. Follow the on-screen confirmation; this switch is free.
- After the switch completes, install Office only from a legitimate Microsoft source or Store listing, and follow the license and product requirements for your Office edition.
Microsoft’s S mode instructions cover Windows 10 as well, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Do not treat an unsupported Windows 10 installation as a secure long-term setup.

No—not for basic browser access to the free web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. A paid Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription provides premium apps and services; it is a separate option, not a prerequisite for using the free web apps. Desktop Office requires a paid purchase or an applicable subscription license.

If you are considering a one-time desktop suite such as Office Home 2024, first confirm that the exact Stream meets the current Windows, memory, and storage requirements and that the license fits your needs.
