Yes. Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant can control Spotify on supported devices, while a custom assistant can use Spotify’s Web API to control playback and manage playlists after you authorize it. What you can do depends on the assistant and device: Siri’s documented commands include creating playlists, Alexa guidance focuses on playback, and custom API playback requires Spotify Premium.

What can an AI assistant do with Spotify?

An assistant can act as a voice-controlled way to choose and control Spotify content, or as part of a custom application that sends authorized requests to Spotify. Those are different kinds of integration: consumer assistants are configured through their platform, while a custom assistant needs a developer to implement Spotify’s authorization and API calls.

Depending on the platform, Spotify control can include selecting a song, album, artist, playlist, or podcast; pausing or resuming; skipping; and adjusting volume. Playlist capabilities are not uniform. Spotify documents playlist creation through Siri and playlist creation and management through its developer API, but the Alexa commands in Spotify’s guidance are playback controls.

  • Consumer voice assistants: Convenient when you already use a supported assistant and device. Available commands and setup vary by platform and configuration.
  • Custom assistants: Can be built to control playback and work with playlists, but require OAuth authorization, appropriate permissions, and implementation work.

Can Siri control Spotify?

Yes. Spotify Support says Siri can play songs, albums, artists, playlists, and podcasts; create playlists; like music to save it to Your Library; skip tracks; play or pause; and change volume.

How to ask Siri

Try a direct request such as Hey, Siri, play my Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify. Depending on your device and configuration, Siri may need you to say “on Spotify” so it routes the request to the right service.

Spotify’s documented Siri capabilities go beyond starting playback: playlist creation and liking music are included. The exact way Siri handles a request can depend on the device and configuration, so a command that works on one setup may not behave identically on another. Spotify’s support guidance describes the available actions, but does not establish one universal setup path or account requirement for every device.

Can Alexa play a Spotify playlist?

Yes. Spotify’s Alexa guidance says you can link Spotify to Alexa speakers such as Amazon Echo and select Spotify as the default music service. Once linked, you can ask Alexa to play a playlist and use basic playback commands.

Examples of Alexa commands

  • Alexa, play .
  • Alexa, pause.
  • Alexa, resume the song.
  • Alexa, stop shuffle.
  • Ask Alexa to adjust the volume.

For playlist requests, use the playlist’s exact name if Alexa does not identify it correctly. Spotify also notes that a newly created playlist may take time to appear in Alexa, so an immediate failure to find it does not necessarily mean the link is broken.

The instructions describe linking Spotify and choosing it as the default service, but do not give a single step-by-step Alexa app path that applies to every app version or region. Follow the current setup flow shown in your Alexa app, then test a playlist by name. If Alexa keeps choosing another service, check that Spotify is selected as the default music service.

Can Google Assistant play Spotify?

Spotify announced Google Assistant support for playing and controlling Spotify music, playlists, and podcasts on Assistant-enabled speakers, smart displays, and phones. That announcement was published on October 21, 2020; it is useful evidence of the integration, but it does not establish current availability on every device or in every region.

If you use Google Assistant, check the current service and device options available where you live rather than assuming that the 2020 announcement describes today’s availability everywhere. The announcement names supported device categories, but it does not specify current regional restrictions, account requirements, or a complete list of commands.

What is the difference between a voice assistant and a custom AI assistant?

A voice assistant uses an existing platform integration, so you can give supported spoken commands without building an application. A custom assistant can be programmed to combine Spotify actions with its own logic, but it needs Spotify authorization and software that calls the relevant API endpoints.

Custom assistant using the Web API Playback control and playlist creation or management, depending on the endpoints and permissions implemented Requires OAuth authorization and appropriate scopes; Spotify’s documentation says Web API use requires Premium.

The practical choice is usually straightforward: choose a consumer assistant for hands-free control using its supported commands; consider a custom integration when you need an application to perform specific Spotify actions as part of a larger workflow. A custom assistant does not bypass Spotify’s account and authorization requirements.

How does a custom assistant control Spotify?

A custom assistant typically sends requests to Spotify’s Web API after the user authorizes access. The API can retrieve metadata, control playback, and create or manage playlists; the assistant must request the permissions required for the specific actions it offers.

OAuth authorization and scopes

OAuth is the authorization flow that lets a user grant an application access without handing the application their Spotify password. The application requests scopes—named permissions—which limit what it can do. For example, Spotify documents user-modify-playback-state for actions such as pausing, seeking, changing volume, skipping, shuffling, transferring playback, and managing the queue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Playlist actions need the relevant playlist-modification permissions. Depending on the operation, the application may need permission to create or edit playlists, reorder items, or replace playlist contents. A well-designed assistant asks only for the permissions its features need; playback control alone does not imply permission to change playlists.

Premium requirement for API playback

Spotify’s Web API documentation says a Spotify Premium account is required for Web API use, and its Start/Resume Playback endpoint specifically requires Premium and the user-modify-playback-state scope. That endpoint can start playback in an album, artist, or playlist context. Do not assume that a custom assistant can start playback through this endpoint with a Free account.

OAuth approval is not the same as a playback entitlement: a user can authorize an application, but the application still has to meet endpoint requirements. A developer should check the requirements for each endpoint rather than treating one granted scope as proof that every Spotify action is available.

Can a custom assistant play Spotify in a browser?

Yes. Spotify’s Web Playback SDK is a client-side JavaScript library that can create a local Spotify Connect device in a browser and provide streaming and playback control. A custom web assistant can use that browser player as its playback target rather than relying only on an existing speaker or phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important iOS limitation: Spotify says playback does not start automatically after a transfer without user interaction. If a browser assistant transfers playback to the SDK on iOS and nothing starts, the missing interaction may be the reason; the page needs a user action to initiate playback. This is a platform limitation, not evidence by itself that OAuth or the transfer failed.

Why might Spotify commands fail?

When a command does not work, first identify whether the issue is recognition, service configuration, playlist availability, authorization, or an account requirement. The fix depends on which layer is failing.

  • The wrong service responds: On Alexa, confirm Spotify is linked and selected as the default music service. On Siri, include “on Spotify” if the request is not routed correctly.
  • A playlist is not found: Use its exact name. If it was just created, allow time for it to appear in Alexa before assuming the integration is disconnected.
  • A custom assistant cannot change playback: Check that the user granted the playback-modification scope and that the application is using an endpoint compatible with its request.
  • Start/Resume Playback is rejected: Verify the Spotify account is Premium and the application has user-modify-playback-state.
  • Browser playback does not begin on iOS: After transferring playback to the Web Playback SDK, provide a user interaction to start it.
  • Google Assistant is unavailable on a device: Check current support for that device and region. Spotify’s cited announcement dates from 2020 and should not be treated as a current universal availability list.

What should you choose?

For ordinary hands-free listening, use the assistant already supported by your speaker, phone, or display and confirm that Spotify is connected. For automated playlist operations or application-specific behavior, a custom assistant can use Spotify’s API, but its capabilities are constrained by the user’s granted scopes, endpoint requirements, and Premium requirement for Web API use and playback initiation.

There is no single answer to whether an “AI assistant” can control Spotify: Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, and a custom API-based assistant have different command sets and conditions. Decide first whether you need simple voice playback or programmable control, then verify the current support and account requirements for that specific route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Spotify assistant use my password directly?

A custom application should use Spotify’s OAuth authorization flow rather than ask you to give it your Spotify password. OAuth lets you grant scoped access, such as playback control, without handing the application your login credentials.

Can Spotify voice control work without internet access?

The available Spotify guidance for these assistant integrations does not establish offline voice control. Whether previously downloaded music can play offline is a separate Spotify feature and should not be inferred from the assistant integrations described here.

Does Google Assistant still support Spotify in my country?

Spotify’s announcement on October 21, 2020 described support on Assistant-enabled devices, but it does not settle present availability in every country. Check the current service options on your own device and in your region.
