There is no single best remote desktop application. For most paid personal and small-team use, choose Splashtop Remote Access. For free personal access, choose Chrome Remote Desktop. For attended technical support, choose TeamViewer Remote or another dedicated support platform. For self-hosting, choose RustDesk. For native Windows connections, use Microsoft RDP through a VPN or zero-trust gateway. For gaming and creative work, use Parsec.

The correct choice depends on what you are connecting to, whether anyone is present at the remote computer, how many devices and technicians are involved, and whether you need administration or high-performance graphics. The prices below are U.S. price snapshots based on annual billing where stated; promotional pricing, taxes, renewal prices, plan limits, and availability can change.

Quick recommendations

Use case First choice Why Important limitation
Personal access to your own computers Splashtop Remote Access Unattended access, file transfer, remote printing, and a relatively low starting price. Solo is displayed at $6 per month, billed annually; Pro is $8.25 per user per month, billed annually. Remote Access is intended for computers you own or manage. Technicians supporting customers should evaluate Splashtop Remote Support instead.
Free personal remote access Chrome Remote Desktop Simple setup, browser access, mobile apps, and Mac, Windows, and Linux host support. It lacks the help-desk queues, detailed reporting, role administration, and fleet workflows found in commercial products.
Attended technical support TeamViewer Remote Mature attended and unattended support, temporary sessions, file transfer, remote printing, recording, branding, deployment, permissions, and integrations. Commercial subscriptions can be expensive for simple personal access. Free use is limited to personal, non-commercial use.
Open-source or self-hosted remote access RustDesk Open-source client, free open-source server, broad platform support, and control over ID and relay infrastructure. You become responsible for server security, keys, networking, upgrades, backups, availability, and bandwidth.
Windows PCs and servers on a managed network Microsoft Remote Desktop/RDP Built into supported Windows editions and efficient with Microsoft infrastructure, VPNs, gateways, and Remote Desktop Services. Windows Home cannot host incoming RDP. Never expose RDP directly to the public internet.
Gaming, CAD, video, 3D, and creative work Parsec Built for interactive streaming, with 60-FPS/UHD capabilities, gamepad support, hardware encoding and decoding, and paid options for accurate color and pen input. It is not a substitute for a help-desk platform, endpoint inventory system, or RMM tool.
Many fixed endpoints on a budget RemotePC Plans are organized around computer counts, including 1-, 10-, 50-, and 100-computer tiers, with always-on access and common support features. Pricing varies substantially by billing period and promotion. Check endpoint limits and overage terms before buying.
Lightweight commercial remote control AnyDesk Broad operating-system support, unattended access, privacy mode, access controls, 2FA, mass deployment, and on-premises availability in higher tiers. Its current displayed U.S. pricing is much higher than figures repeated in many older comparison articles.
VNC workflows, Raspberry Pi, and industrial devices RealVNC Connect Strong VNC heritage, cross-platform support, unattended device access, attended Instant Support, and higher-tier auditing and LAN options. Licensing is based around active connections and remote devices, so compare it by normalizing your actual usage.

These are editorial recommendations based on documented features and current pricing evidence, not independent speed or security laboratory tests.

Logitech MK270 Full Size Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo - Black | Full size keyboard with spill-resistant design, compact ambidextrous mouse, connect via single included USB-A Nano Receiver
  • Reliable Plug and Play: The USB receiver provides a reliable wireless connection up to 33 ft (1), so you can forget about drop-outs and delays and you can take it wherever you use your computer
  • Type in Comfort: The design of this keyboard creates a comfortable typing experience thanks to the low-profile, quiet keys and standard layout with full-size F-keys, number pad, and arrow keys
  • Durable and Resilient: This full-size wireless keyboard features a spill-resistant design (2), durable keys and sturdy tilt legs with adjustable height
  • Long Battery Life: MK270 combo features a 36-month keyboard and 12-month mouse battery life (3), along with on/off switches allowing you to go months without the hassle of changing batteries
  • Easy to Use: This wireless keyboard and mouse combo features 8 multimedia hotkeys for instant access to the Internet, email, play/pause, and volume so you can easily check out your favorite sites
  • Remote access connects you to computers that you own or manage. It is the usual choice for reaching a work PC from home or accessing a home computer while traveling.
  • Remote support lets a technician help another person, normally with that person’s knowledge and consent. A temporary code and attended approval are common.
  • Unattended access allows a connection when nobody is sitting at the remote computer. It is convenient for your own devices and fleet maintenance, but it increases the damage a compromised account could cause.
  • Remote administration or RMM adds inventory, monitoring, alerts, patching, scripts, policies, deployment, and audit workflows. A screen-sharing application may not provide these capabilities.
  • RDP is Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol and its client/server ecosystem. It is especially useful for Windows hosts on a controlled network.
  • VNC describes a family of screen-sharing protocols and products. RealVNC is a commercial VNC platform; it is not interchangeable with every VNC server or viewer.
  • VDI and cloud PCs provide a desktop hosted in a data center or cloud rather than connecting to your existing physical computer. Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, and similar services solve a different problem.

Many comparison pages put all of these products in one ranking. That can make a high-frame-rate game-streaming tool look like a support application, or make a one-time support utility look suitable for managing 500 business computers. Choose the job first.

The best remote desktop software, reviewed

1. Splashtop Remote Access: best paid choice for most individuals and small teams

Choose it for: accessing your own home, office, or managed computers regularly without paying enterprise-support prices.

Splashtop is the strongest default paid recommendation here because it combines the features most personal and small-team users actually need: unattended access, file transfer, remote printing, multiple-monitor support on applicable plans, and security controls without forcing a support technician workflow on someone who only wants to reach their own computers.

The current displayed pricing is $6 per month for Solo, billed annually ($72 per year), and $8.25 per user per month for Pro, billed annually ($99 per user per year). Splashtop says the Solo price increased from $5 to $6 effective March 1, 2026, so older articles are stale. Pro is aimed at teams and adds functionality such as multi-monitor support and user/role management. See the current pricing page before subscribing.

Remote Access is not the same as Splashtop Remote Support. Remote Access is for computers you own or manage; Remote Support is the product to examine when technicians need to support customers or users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security features listed by Splashtop include device authentication, two-step verification, idle session timeout, connection notifications, screen blanking, local-input blocking, and logging. Splashtop says sessions use TLS and AES-256 encryption and that encoded screen streams are transmitted but not stored. Those are vendor statements, not an independent guarantee: your account configuration, endpoint security, permissions, and offboarding process still determine much of the risk. Its security documentation and compliance material should be read as deployment information, not proof that every customer deployment is automatically compliant.

Skip it if: you need a temporary one-click support session, a complete RMM system, or a self-hosted relay and identity service.

2. Chrome Remote Desktop: best free option for personal access

Choose it for: reaching a personal Mac, Windows PC, or Linux computer from a browser or phone with minimal setup.

Chrome Remote Desktop is intentionally simple. For unattended access, open remotedesktop.google.com/access on the computer you want to reach, download and install Chrome Remote Desktop Host, choose a computer name and PIN, then connect from the web client or the Android and iOS apps. Google documents Mac, Windows, and Linux computer access in its setup guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For one-time support, use the Remote Support flow rather than registering a permanent unattended host. The person at the remote computer generates a temporary code, shares it with the helper, and participates in the connection. That is a better safety model for helping a family member because the access does not silently remain available afterward.

Connections rely on Google services for negotiation and may use direct, STUN, or TURN/relay connectivity. Google’s network documentation lists outbound TCP 443 and TCP/UDP 3478 requirements, with dynamic ports involved in the live session. Work and school networks can block the service, unknown browser extensions, or relay traffic. It has basic remote-control conveniences, but it is not a help-desk platform: expect limited inventory, role management, audit reporting, deployment, queueing, and integrations.

Skip it if: you support customers commercially, need detailed session records, require SSO and delegated technician permissions, or need a managed fleet.

3. TeamViewer Remote: best for attended technical support

Choose it for: helping customers, colleagues, relatives, or employees through attended and unattended sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TeamViewer Remote is the most complete conventional support choice in this group. Its documented features include temporary support sessions, unattended access, mobile-device connections, file transfer, remote printing, wake-on-LAN, multiple monitors, black screen, blocking remote input, session recording, mass deployment, reporting, custom branding, permissions, and integrations. The exact feature set depends on the product and subscription.

TeamViewer states that only the expert needs a paid license for a supported session. That can make the licensing model workable when technicians connect to many support recipients, but it does not mean that every device, concurrent connection, or management feature is unlimited. Commercial offerings are subscription-based and the current product description identifies Remote Access, Business, Premium, and Corporate offerings. The current getting-started material lists a 14-day business trial. Use the features page, product description, and current U.S. checkout flow rather than an old comparison article for a quote.

Free use is limited to personal, non-commercial use. A business using the free edition for customer or employee support risks licensing problems even if the technical connection works.

Skip it if: you only need to access two personal computers and want the lowest recurring cost, or if keeping all rendezvous and relay infrastructure under your own control is a requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. RustDesk: best open-source and self-hosted alternative

Choose it for: privacy-sensitive users, organizations that need infrastructure control, and administrators willing to operate their own service.

RustDesk has an open-source client and an open-source server. The OSS server uses hbbs for ID, rendezvous, and signaling functions and hbbr for relay traffic. Its documentation covers Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and web support. RustDesk describes peer-to-peer connections with end-to-end encryption based on NaCl, but an operator still needs to understand what is encrypted, what metadata is visible to infrastructure, and where logs and account data are stored.

Server Pro adds the administration layer many businesses will need: a web console, API, OIDC, LDAP, 2FA, device management, access control, multiple relay management, and a web client. The free OSS server is not “zero cost” in practice. You must provision and harden a server, protect private keys, configure DNS and TLS where appropriate, limit administrative access, update the server and clients, monitor logs, back up configuration, and pay for hosting and relay bandwidth.

The official GitHub release page showed version 1.4.7 in the research snapshot for this article. Release numbers change, so check current releases before deployment rather than copying that version into an installation script.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skip it if: you want a zero-maintenance hosted service, need a polished support queue out of the box, or cannot take responsibility for the security and availability of a public-facing server.

5. Microsoft Remote Desktop/RDP: best native Windows option

Choose it for: Windows-to-Windows administration on a LAN, VPN, Remote Desktop Gateway, or other protected business network.

RDP remains a strong technical choice when the environment is already Microsoft-based. Supported host editions include Windows 10/11 Pro, Enterprise, and supported Education editions, plus Windows Server. Windows Home cannot act as an incoming RDP host. The client can be the built-in Windows Remote Desktop Connection application, commonly launched with mstsc. Microsoft’s newer Windows App is used for resources such as Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Dev Box, and some other services; it is not a blanket replacement for every ordinary PC-to-PC RDP connection.

Microsoft’s Store Remote Desktop app reached end of support on May 27, 2025. A separate standalone Windows-client transition date of March 27, 2026 applies to certain Microsoft cloud resources. This does not mean that Microsoft retired the RDP protocol or that mstsc stopped being relevant for ordinary remote PCs. See Microsoft’s Windows App documentation and transition notice for the resource-specific details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To enable a host, open Start → Settings → System → Remote Desktop, turn on Remote Desktop, and select Confirm. Add accounts through Remote Desktop users or Select users that can remotely access this PC if the account is not already an administrator. The host must be powered on, connected, enabled for RDP, reachable, allowed through the firewall, and configured for an authorized user.

Never forward TCP port 3389 directly to the public internet. Use a VPN, Remote Desktop Gateway, zero-trust access gateway, or equivalent protective layer. Restrict accounts, use strong unique credentials, apply MFA through the surrounding access system where available, patch the host, and monitor authentication logs. CISA specifically recommends disabling RDP where unnecessary and protecting required RDP with a VPN/MFA or zero-trust gateway.

Skip it if: the host runs Windows Home, you need simple phone access through a cloud relay, or you are supporting nontechnical users who need a temporary consent-based session.

6. Parsec: best for gaming and creative workloads

Choose it for: low-latency interactive work such as gaming, video editing, 3D, CAD, and other applications where frame rate and input response matter more than help-desk administration.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parsec’s product materials emphasize high-performance streaming, including 60 FPS and UHD capabilities, gamepad support, and hardware encoding and decoding. Paid tiers add capabilities such as multi-monitor streaming, 4:4:4 color, privacy mode, Wacom pressure and tilt support, administration, SSO, role-based access, and audit features. Enterprise host documentation lists Windows 10 or newer and macOS 10.15 or newer.

Use the native client when performance matters. Parsec documents that its web client lacks some low-level hardware optimizations available to the native application. Actual results depend heavily on round-trip latency, jitter, host upload bandwidth, client download bandwidth, GPU encoding, client decoding, Wi-Fi congestion, resolution, frame rate, and codec settings. “Low latency” in a product description is not a substitute for testing on your own network.

Skip it if: you need endpoint inventory, patching, support queues, customer consent workflows, extensive unattended maintenance, or conventional remote printing and file-management features.

7. RemotePC: best budget-oriented endpoint model

Choose it for: a fixed number of computers where paying according to endpoint capacity is more predictable than paying for every technician.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RemotePC organizes its offerings into Consumer, SOHO, Team, and Enterprise models. Its current pricing page presents capacity tiers including 1, 10, 50, and 100 computers, with larger quantities available. Listed functions include always-on access, file transfer, remote printing, whiteboard, reboot, multiple-monitor support, session recording, chat, browser access, and an RDP Connector on applicable plans.

The service offers a seven-day trial without requiring a credit card. However, its monthly, annual, two-year, and promotional displays can look very different. RemotePC also documents account limits and possible additional charges when usage exceeds the purchased capacity. Before buying, check how many computers, users, simultaneous sessions, and support features the selected plan includes, and read the overage terms at the plan-limits page.

Skip it if: you need a self-hosted system, sophisticated identity governance, or a high-performance graphics-first connection.

8. AnyDesk: capable commercial alternative, but no longer an obvious low-cost default

Choose it for: broad platform coverage, unattended access, lightweight remote control, mass deployment, and optional on-premises operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AnyDesk supports unattended access, privacy mode, access control, 2FA, session logs, mass deployment, and higher-tier on-premises availability. Its current displayed U.S. pricing is materially higher than many older articles suggest:

  • Solo: $28.90 per month billed annually; one licensed user, three registered devices from which to connect, and 100 managed unattended devices.
  • Standard: $49.90 per month billed annually; starts with one concurrent connection and 500 managed devices.
  • Advanced: $111.90 per month billed annually for two connections; starts with 1,000 managed devices.
  • Ultimate: custom pricing.

That works out to $346.80, $598.80, and $1,342.80 per year respectively before tax, assuming the displayed annual-billing prices remain unchanged. The meaningful comparison is not just the monthly number: check concurrent connections, licensed users, registered devices, managed unattended devices, and whether the team needs SSO, API access, or on-premises deployment.

Platform details matter. AnyDesk’s current support documentation says incoming Linux sessions require Xorg; Wayland is limited to outgoing sessions. iOS and iPadOS remote control is constrained by Apple’s platform rules, so an app’s ability to display a device does not imply that it can fully control it.

Skip it if: your main criterion is the lowest price for personal access, you need a full RMM platform, or your Linux hosts depend on Wayland for incoming control.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

9. RealVNC Connect: best mature VNC-style option

Choose it for: Raspberry Pi, industrial or specialist devices, cross-platform VNC workflows, and organizations that want a clear split between device access and attended support.

RealVNC’s Device Access product is intended for owned or managed computers and can support attended or unattended connections. Instant Support is designed for attended, on-demand assistance and does not require installing the full server on the customer’s computer. Higher tiers add user and device groups, roles, recording, MFA, audit logs, on-demand assistance, and direct LAN connections.

The current platform documentation lists Windows 10/11, Windows Server, macOS through Tahoe 26, Ubuntu, RHEL/Rocky/CentOS, SUSE, and Raspberry Pi versions subject to version limits. Verify the exact operating-system version before deploying to older equipment. RealVNC licenses around active connections and remote devices, so its price should be normalized against your number of technicians, simultaneous sessions, and managed endpoints rather than compared with a simple per-user plan.

Skip it if: you want a free, minimal setup, or you need a high-frame-rate creative streaming tool rather than a VNC-oriented access platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose the right product

Start with the job

  1. Accessing your own computer? Start with Splashtop Remote Access, Chrome Remote Desktop, RemotePC, or RDP if the host is a suitable Windows edition.
  2. Helping someone once? Use Quick Assist, Chrome Remote Desktop’s Remote Support flow, TeamViewer, or RealVNC Instant Support. Prefer a temporary code and explicit consent over permanent unattended access.
  3. Supporting customers repeatedly? Choose TeamViewer or a dedicated support product. Check technician licensing, concurrent sessions, branding, queues, session logs, and commercial-use terms.
  4. Managing many endpoints? Compare device limits, mass deployment, role-based access, SSO, inventory, logs, APIs, alerts, scripts, and patching. A remote-control product alone is not necessarily an RMM.
  5. Need privacy or infrastructure control? Evaluate RustDesk self-hosting or an enterprise on-premises option. Include operational costs and security responsibilities in the decision.
  6. Need gaming or creative responsiveness? Test Parsec or another streaming-focused product with the exact host GPU, client hardware, network route, resolution, and frame rate you will use.
  7. Need a Windows server or office PC? RDP is efficient, but place it behind a VPN, gateway, or zero-trust control rather than exposing it directly.

Check host and client compatibility separately

“Cross-platform” can mean that an app has a viewer for a platform, not that the platform can host an incoming session or receive full control. Before installing, verify:

  • Host and client operating systems, versions, and editions.
  • Whether Windows Home can host the connection. It cannot host incoming Microsoft RDP.
  • Whether macOS privacy permissions are available to the person installing the host.
  • Whether Linux uses X11 or Wayland and whether the product supports incoming control on that display server.
  • Whether an iPhone or iPad is merely viewable. iOS and iPadOS generally restrict full remote control of the device itself.
  • Whether Android control requires a vendor-specific accessibility service or plug-in.
  • Whether a headless computer needs a virtual display, dummy HDMI adapter, display emulator, or special host configuration.

Understand the billing unit

Price comparisons fail when they compare unlike billing models:

  • Per user: economical when one person accesses many devices, but expensive when ten employees each need a seat.
  • Per remote computer: useful for a fixed fleet accessed by several people.
  • Per technician: common for support teams that connect to many customers.
  • Per concurrent connection: useful when a large team has only a few simultaneous sessions.
  • Per managed device: relevant to endpoint administration and unattended access.
  • Annual subscription: often reduces the monthly equivalent but creates a renewal commitment.

Three example cost scenarios

These examples show why the billing unit matters. They are arithmetic based on the displayed prices and plan capacities, not quotes for every product.

  1. One person accessing two home or office computers: Splashtop Solo is $6 × 12 = $72 per year, billed annually, assuming the plan’s device allowance fits the setup. Chrome Remote Desktop has no separate subscription for its basic service, so it is the free-first option. RemotePC’s one-computer tier may not fit two hosts, so check the next capacity tier rather than assuming the lowest headline price applies.
  2. Two technicians supporting 50 endpoints: AnyDesk Advanced starts at two concurrent connections and 1,000 managed devices. At the displayed $111.90 per month billed annually, the base calculation is $111.90 × 12 = $1,342.80 per year before tax. Standard is cheaper at $598.80 per year but starts with one concurrent connection, so it may not meet the two-technician requirement. RemotePC’s 50-computer tier and TeamViewer’s expert licensing could be better fits, but their current prices depend on checkout configuration.
  3. Ten employees accessing 20 shared workstations: Splashtop Pro’s displayed seat price gives a base of $8.25 × 10 × 12 = $990 per year before tax, subject to its host/device allowance and team terms. A device-priced plan may cost less if only a small number of employees connect at once; a concurrent-connection plan may be better if all ten do not need simultaneous sessions.

Evaluate performance honestly

Remote-control responsiveness is determined by the entire path, not just the brand. Consider round-trip latency, jitter, host upload bandwidth, client download bandwidth, hardware encoding and decoding, resolution, frame rate, color accuracy, audio, input responsiveness, Wi-Fi congestion, and whether the session uses a direct path or relay.

If you conduct a comparison test, record the host hardware and GPU, client hardware, operating systems and versions, physical distance, network type, resolution, frame rate, codec settings, latency-measurement method, and whether the session used a relay. Without those details, claims such as fastest, lowest latency, or best image quality are not reproducible.

Is remote desktop software safe?

It can be, but remote-control software is powerful access software. The important question is not whether a product displays an encryption badge; it is whether the complete deployment limits who can connect, what they can do, how access is logged, and what happens when an account or endpoint is compromised.

Security checklist

  • Enable MFA or 2FA for every administrative and technician account.
  • Use strong, unique account passwords and never reuse an unattended-access PIN.
  • Require device authentication and use allowlists where available.
  • Give technicians only the permissions they need. Disable file transfer, clipboard, local input, or elevation when the task does not require them.
  • Use session expiry, idle timeouts, screen blanking, and local-input blocking where appropriate.
  • Keep host agents, clients, operating systems, browsers, and gateways patched.
  • Review session logs and audit trails, especially after staff changes or suspicious support requests.
  • Remove unattended access, revoke tokens, delete devices, and rotate credentials during offboarding.
  • Do not expose RDP or another remote service unnecessarily to the internet.
  • Separate support accounts from ordinary personal accounts and protect the device used by technicians.

CISA identifies exposed or poorly secured remote services, weak passwords, missing MFA, unpatched software, and open ports as recurring initial-access risks. Its security-controls advisory is a useful baseline for business deployments.

Understand the data flow

Ask vendors and administrators to distinguish among:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Signaling and authentication: how the clients find each other and verify the session.
  • Direct peer-to-peer traffic: screen, keyboard, mouse, audio, and file data that may travel directly between endpoints.
  • Relayed traffic: data that passes through a vendor or self-hosted relay when NAT or firewall rules prevent a direct connection.
  • Files and clipboard data: often subject to different controls or logs than screen pixels.
  • Recordings: stored locally or in a cloud service only if recording is enabled, but still requiring retention and access policies.
  • Metadata: account identities, device names, IP addresses, connection times, session duration, and support relationships.
  • Inventory and administration data: devices, users, roles, policies, and API records.

“Encrypted” does not automatically mean that a vendor cannot see metadata, relay traffic, store recordings, or administer the service. When a vendor says its screen traffic is end-to-end encrypted, attribute that claim to the vendor and determine whether it covers file transfer, metadata, recordings, and relays. With self-hosting, you gain infrastructure control but assume responsibility for keys, certificates, updates, access controls, monitoring, and backups.

Beware of remote-support scams

Remote-control tools are routinely abused by impersonators. The FTC warns that an attacker with remote access may view files, install malware, or steal credentials.

Safety rules:

  • Never accept an unsolicited remote-support call or pop-up claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, your bank, or an antivirus company.
  • Never read a remote-access code to an unexpected caller.
  • End the session as soon as legitimate support is complete.
  • Uninstall temporary support software if you no longer need it.
  • If an untrusted person connected, change passwords, inspect installed programs, startup items, and browser extensions, and review financial accounts.

Setup guides

Chrome Remote Desktop: unattended personal access

  1. On the computer you want to access, open Chrome and visit remotedesktop.google.com/access.
  2. Under Set up Remote Access, select Download.
  3. Install Chrome Remote Desktop Host.
  4. Follow the prompts to choose a computer name and PIN.
  5. From another computer, open the Chrome Remote Desktop web client, or install the Android/iOS app.
  6. Select the registered host and enter the PIN.

If it fails, confirm that the host is powered on and online; check that the network permits TCP 443 and TCP/UDP 3478; inspect antivirus and firewall rules; test from a different network; update Chrome and Chrome Remote Desktop; and use the temporary Remote Support flow if the task is attended support rather than permanent access. Google’s network guide describes the relevant connectivity requirements.

Windows RDP: protected setup

  1. On the host, open Start → Settings → System → Remote Desktop.
  2. Turn Remote Desktop on and select Confirm.
  3. Add permitted accounts through Remote Desktop users if necessary.
  4. On the client, open the built-in Remote Desktop Connection application, commonly by running mstsc.
  5. Enter the host name or protected network address and authenticate.

Before testing, verify the host edition, power state, network route, firewall, user permissions, and VPN or gateway policy. Do not solve an external-access problem by forwarding port 3389 directly to the internet. Use a VPN, Remote Desktop Gateway, zero-trust gateway, or another authenticated protective layer. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover host enablement; CISA’s RDP guidance covers protection.

Quick Assist: one-time attended support

  1. Open or install the current Microsoft Store version of Quick Assist.
  2. The helper selects Help someone.
  3. The helper shares the six-digit code.
  4. The recipient enters the code and selects Submit.
  5. The recipient allows screen sharing.
  6. The helper selects Request control if full control is required.
  7. The recipient explicitly approves control.
  8. Select Leave when finished.

Quick Assist is for trusted, attended support, not unattended administration. Microsoft advises users to accept connections only from people they trust because unsolicited technical-support requests are a common scam. See Microsoft’s Quick Assist instructions.

RustDesk OSS self-hosting

RustDesk’s documented Docker-based OSS installation currently includes:

bash <(wget -qO- https://get.docker.com)
wget rustdesk.com/oss.yml -O compose.yml
sudo docker compose up -d

The documentation’s example UFW rules are:

sudo ufw allow 21114:21119/tcp
sudo ufw allow 21116/udp
sudo ufw enable

After deployment, clients generally need the self-hosted ID Server address and the server’s public Key. In the RustDesk client, the documented manual path is Settings → Network, where the ID, relay, API, and key fields can be configured.

These commands are not a production-hardening guide. Inspect the compose file, protect the server, restrict administration, configure TLS and DNS as appropriate, back up configuration and keys, monitor logs, limit firewall exposure, and keep the server and clients updated. Start with RustDesk’s OSS installation and client-configuration documentation.

Troubleshooting common failures

The host is offline or cannot be found

  • Confirm the computer is powered on, not shut down, and connected to the network.
  • Check whether sleep, hibernation, a laptop lid, or a disconnected display is stopping the host agent.
  • Verify that the remote-access service or host agent is running and signed in.
  • Test the host locally. A crashed operating system cannot accept a remote session.

A powered-off, disconnected, or crashed host normally cannot accept a session. Wake-on-LAN is not magic: it requires compatible hardware, BIOS/UEFI settings, network configuration, and often another device on the local network to relay the wake packet.

The connection works at home but not at work or school

Corporate networks may block relay domains, UDP, WebRTC, unknown installers, or dynamic ports. Test from a permitted network, ask the administrator about the product’s documented outbound requirements, and do not bypass organizational controls. For Chrome Remote Desktop, Google lists outbound TCP 443 and TCP/UDP 3478; live sessions may also use dynamic ports.

The screen is black or there is no display

  • On macOS, grant the host application Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Input control may require a separate permission.
  • On a headless PC, add a virtual display, dummy HDMI adapter, or product-specific display configuration if the GPU does not expose a desktop.
  • Check whether privacy mode or screen blanking is enabled. Those features intentionally hide the local display.
  • On Linux, check whether the product supports the current X11 or Wayland session. AnyDesk, for example, documents Xorg as required for incoming Linux sessions.

The connection is slow or blurry

  • Measure round-trip latency and jitter rather than relying on the product label.
  • Reduce resolution, frame rate, color depth, or image quality temporarily.
  • Prefer Ethernet or a strong 5-GHz/6-GHz Wi-Fi connection at both ends.
  • Check whether the session is relayed and whether host upload or client download bandwidth is saturated.
  • Use a native client for performance-sensitive Parsec sessions.
  • Verify hardware encoding on the host and decoding support on the client.

The keyboard, mouse, file transfer, or printer does not work

  • Check whether the session is view-only or whether the recipient has approved control.
  • On macOS, revisit Accessibility and input permissions.
  • Check product policy for clipboard, drive, file-transfer, printer, and local-input redirection.
  • Confirm that a privacy mode or local-input block is not enabled.
  • For RDP, review Group Policy and connection settings controlling clipboard, drives, audio, and printer redirection.

A phone can view but not control the remote device

Mobile operating systems impose restrictions. iOS and iPadOS generally do not permit an ordinary app to take full control of the iPhone or iPad itself. Android control may need an accessibility service or vendor plug-in. A remote desktop app’s presence in a mobile app store does not guarantee full mobile-to-mobile control.

The session times out or commercial-use warnings appear

Check whether the product is being used outside its free-personal license, whether the trial expired, and whether the plan limits technicians, endpoints, or concurrent connections. Chrome Remote Desktop is a reasonable free personal tool, but it is not a free commercial help desk. TeamViewer’s free use is limited to personal, non-commercial use. RemotePC and AnyDesk can also enforce plan capacity or overage rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clients connect inconsistently after an update

Update the host agent and client together, confirm that the account and device registration are current, review vendor release notes, and test with a native client instead of a browser. For self-hosted RustDesk, verify that client keys, ID server addresses, relay addresses, server versions, certificates, and firewall rules still match.

FAQ

What is the best free remote desktop software?

For basic personal access, Chrome Remote Desktop is the best starting point. It supports Mac, Windows, and Linux hosts, browser access, and mobile clients. For one-time Windows help, Quick Assist is often safer because the recipient explicitly approves each session. Neither is a replacement for a commercial help-desk or fleet-management platform.

Can I remote into a computer from an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes, many services provide mobile clients, including Chrome Remote Desktop and TeamViewer. The remote computer must still be powered on, online, reachable, and permitted to accept connections. Mobile control of the phone itself is much more restricted, particularly on iOS and iPadOS.

Can I remote into Windows Home with Microsoft RDP?

No. Windows Home cannot host incoming Microsoft RDP sessions. Upgrade the host to a supported Pro, Enterprise, or Education edition, or use a separate remote-access application that supports the host edition.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is RDP safer than TeamViewer or AnyDesk?

Not automatically. RDP can be efficient and well integrated, but an exposed RDP service is a common attack target. A brokered product can avoid inbound port forwarding but introduces account, vendor, relay, and agent risks. Compare the complete security model: MFA, access restrictions, patching, logs, permissions, relay architecture, and exposure.

Does the remote computer have to be turned on?

Normally, yes. A computer that is powered off, disconnected, sleeping beyond the agent’s ability to wake it, or crashed cannot accept a normal session. Wake-on-LAN can help only when compatible hardware, firmware, network configuration, and a wake relay are available.

Can I use remote desktop software without port forwarding?

Usually. Chrome Remote Desktop, TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Splashtop, and similar cloud-brokered services typically negotiate a connection through their service and may relay traffic. RDP commonly needs a VPN, Remote Desktop Gateway, or zero-trust gateway for access from outside the local network. Avoid direct public port forwarding for RDP.

What is best for helping family members?

Use Quick Assist for a trusted, one-time Windows session, or Chrome Remote Desktop’s Remote Support flow when its platform support fits. Use a temporary consent-based code, end the session immediately, and remove any installed support agent afterward. Never help someone who contacted you unexpectedly through a pop-up or unsolicited call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is best for a small business?

For employees reaching managed computers, start with Splashtop Remote Access or compare RemotePC by endpoint capacity. For customer support, TeamViewer or a dedicated support product is a better fit. Compare technicians, concurrent sessions, endpoints, SSO, roles, deployment, logs, recording, API access, and commercial licensing rather than just the monthly headline price.

What is the best self-hosted alternative to TeamViewer?

RustDesk is the clearest self-hosted choice in this guide. Its OSS server provides ID and relay components, while Server Pro adds a web console, API, OIDC, LDAP, 2FA, device management, access control, relay management, and a web client. Self-hosting shifts security, maintenance, uptime, and backup responsibilities to you.

Can remote desktop software transfer files and print?

Many commercial products can. TeamViewer, Splashtop, RemotePC, AnyDesk, and RealVNC document file transfer, while remote printing and clipboard support vary by plan, host operating system, and session policy. Chrome Remote Desktop is more limited. RDP supports clipboard, drive, printer, and audio redirection when enabled by policy.

Does remote desktop software work through a browser?

Chrome Remote Desktop is browser-first. TeamViewer, RemotePC, RustDesk Server Pro, and some other products provide browser workflows. Parsec documents that its native client is preferable for performance because the browser client lacks some hardware optimizations. A browser client may also have fewer device-control features than a native application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if the internet connection drops?

The session normally pauses or disconnects. Unsaved work can be lost, and a relayed service may need to renegotiate the connection. After recovery, reconnect and verify the host state. Local-network RDP through a stable VPN may recover differently from a cloud-relayed session.

How do I remove unattended access securely?

Delete the device from the provider console, disable or uninstall the host agent, revoke tokens and API keys, remove saved passwords and PINs, rotate credentials, review active sessions and logs, and remove firewall or VPN rules that are no longer needed. For a self-hosted deployment, also remove the client’s server and key configuration or decommission its account and certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best remote desktop software for most people?

For paid personal and small-team access, Splashtop Remote Access is the best default recommendation in this guide. Chrome Remote Desktop is the better free personal option, while TeamViewer is better for attended support.

Is remote desktop software safe to use?

It can be, provided you enable MFA, use strong credentials, restrict devices and permissions, keep software patched, review logs, and avoid exposing RDP directly to the internet. Treat unattended access as a high-impact privilege.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best self-hosted remote desktop tool?

RustDesk is the strongest self-hosted option covered here. Its OSS server is free, while Server Pro adds identity, access-control, API, web-console, and management features. You remain responsible for hardening and maintaining the infrastructure.

Can I use a remote desktop app to control an iPhone or iPad?

Usually not with full control. iOS and iPadOS restrict device control by third-party apps. Many apps can connect from an iPhone or iPad to a computer, but that is different from controlling the mobile device itself.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: choose by job, not by a generic ranking. Use Splashtop Remote Access for most paid personal access, Chrome Remote Desktop for free personal use, TeamViewer for attended support, RustDesk for self-hosting, RDP behind a protected network path for native Windows administration, and Parsec for graphics-heavy interactive work. Before subscribing, verify the host operating system, unattended-access requirements, billing unit, concurrent sessions, security controls, and the price at checkout.
