Clio Manage is the best all-around choice for most firms because it combines legal timekeeping with matter management, ABA billing codes, LEDES invoicing, trust accounting, expenses and reporting. TimeSolv is the better specialist billing system for firms that need detailed e-billing, trust controls and offline capture. MyCase suits small firms that want time entries tied automatically to matters, while PracticePanther stands out for configurable invoices and firm-wide reports. Smokeball is the strongest option when automatic activity capture is a priority, but its AutoTime feature is reserved for Prosper+.

The right choice depends less on a stopwatch feature than on how reliably a product attributes work to the correct matter, supports your billing model, handles trust and LEDES requirements, and gives partners usable realization and profitability data. The comparison below uses vendor descriptions and published prices available in 2025 and 2026; plans, integrations and prices can change, so confirm a current quote for your jurisdiction and seat count.

Quick comparison: the five strongest legal time trackers

Software Best for Capture options Legal billing depth Published price information
Clio Manage Broad cloud practice management for most firms Manual timers, editable entries and mobile/browser access Hourly, flat-fee and contingency workflows, ABA codes, LEDES, trust, expenses and reports Starter: $39 per user per month billed annually (Clio, 2025)
TimeSolv Billing-led firms needing detailed controls and offline work Browser and mobile entry plus TimeSync desktop capture, including offline use Detailed time and billing, e-billing, trust accounting, payments and integrations $55 per user/month for 1–4 users, $53 for 5–14, $50 for 15+; annual rates are lower (Clio, 2026)
MyCase Small firms wanting simple matter-linked billing Manual entry with automatic matter association Time and expenses, invoices and online payments in Basic Current price not stated in the supplied vendor material
PracticePanther Custom invoices, payment flexibility and firm reporting Timers and editable time/expense entries Flexible billing and one-click firm-wide reports Current price not stated in the supplied vendor material
Smokeball Automatic activity capture alongside legal billing Manual tracking in lower tiers; AutoTime in Prosper+ Legal billing, trust management and reporting Bill $49 and Boost $89 per user/month; Grow or Prosper quote-only in the cited comparison (Clio, 2026)

There is no independent, authoritative head-to-head accuracy or return-on-investment study for these five products. Vendor comparison pages are useful for discovering features, not for proving that one timer records more billable minutes than another.

What makes legal time-tracking software different?

A generic employee time clock answers when someone was working. A legal timekeeping system must answer which client and matter benefited, what task was performed, how it should be billed, and whether the entry can be defended months later. That difference affects both revenue and professional-responsibility controls.

Matter attribution and billing codes

Entries need a client, matter, date, timekeeper, description and billable status. Legal platforms commonly add ABA task or activity codes, rate tables, phase codes and billing narratives. A timer that stops at 5:00 p.m. but leaves the user to reconstruct matters from memory can still create inaccurate invoices.

Multiple fee arrangements

Hourly work requires duration multiplied by a rate, but firms also bill flat-fee phases, contingency matters, retainers and blended rates. Look for a system that can record time for management and profitability even when the client is not billed by the hour.

Trust, e-billing and auditability

Trust accounting needs separation between operating and client funds, matter-level balances, transfer records and permissions. LEDES or other e-billing workflows require structured fields and validation that ordinary invoicing apps do not provide. A useful audit trail records edits, approvals and write-offs instead of silently replacing the original entry.

Clio Manage: the broadest all-purpose platform

Clio Manage is the safest starting point for a firm that wants timekeeping inside a wider cloud practice-management system. Clio’s guide updated September 15, 2025 describes legal timekeeping with ABA billing codes, LEDES invoicing, trust accounting, expense tracking and reporting. That combination covers the requirements most small and mid-sized practices discover only after adopting a basic timer.

Where Clio fits

  • Firms that need matters, documents, calendars, intake, a client portal and billing in one environment.
  • Teams that want browser and mobile access rather than a desktop-only application.
  • Practices that send structured invoices or need trust and operating transactions associated with matters.

Price and trade-offs

Clio’s Starter plan is listed at $39 per user per month when billed annually in the 2025 guide. That is a dated annual-billing figure, not a guaranteed current price or a monthly commitment. Confirm which billing, trust, reporting and integration functions are included in the plan you are considering; moving from a basic tier to advanced controls can change the total substantially.

Clio’s breadth is also its compromise. A firm seeking the deepest specialist e-billing controls or offline desktop capture may find TimeSolv more focused. A solo practitioner who only needs quick matter-linked entries could find Clio’s larger platform more than necessary.

TimeSolv: specialist time, billing and offline capture

TimeSolv is designed around legal time and billing rather than treating them as one module in a general practice suite. Its product page describes the TimeSync desktop app, which lets users track time without keeping a browser open and continue working while offline. That matters to lawyers travelling, working in restricted environments or switching between remote locations with unreliable connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Capabilities that distinguish it

  • Detailed time and billing workflows for firms with complex rates, narratives and billing reviews.
  • E-billing and LEDES-oriented workflows, plus trust accounting and payment functions.
  • Integrations for accounting and payment processes, subject to the current plan and connector availability.
  • Desktop, browser and mobile access, with TimeSync handling offline capture and later synchronization.

Published seat bands

Seats Monthly price per user Qualification
1–4 $55 Published by a Clio comparison in 2026; annual pricing is lower
5–14 $53 Published by a Clio comparison in 2026; annual pricing is lower
15+ $50 Published by a Clio comparison in 2026; annual pricing is lower

TimeSolv is a strong fit when billing staff need granular review and when offline capture is a requirement, but it may be excessive for a small office that only sends straightforward invoices. Ask for a demonstration of your actual LEDES format, trust workflow and accounting integration rather than relying on a feature checklist.

MyCase: straightforward matter-linked entries for small firms

MyCase targets small-firm workflows in which the main risk is forgetting time or attaching it to the wrong file. Its official product page says that time entries automatically link to the right matter. The Basic plan includes time and expense tracking, invoices and online payments.

Why small practices choose it

  • Less administrative friction when a user starts from a matter and records time there.
  • A single path from time and expenses to an invoice and online payment request.
  • A practice-management approach that is easier to roll out than a specialist billing system for a small team.

Automatic association does not mean automatic accuracy. Users still need to choose the correct matter, describe the work, verify the rate and review entries before billing. If your clients require LEDES files, sophisticated trust transfers or complex multi-rate arrangements, verify those functions in your proposed plan; the Basic feature description alone does not establish that they are included.

PracticePanther: flexible invoices and firm-wide visibility

PracticePanther is a good candidate when the firm cares about how invoices look and how payment options are presented. The cited comparison highlights customizable invoices, time and expense tracking, flexible payment options and one-click firm-wide reports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best use cases

  • Firms with different invoice templates for practice groups or client arrangements.
  • Partners who want a quick whole-firm view of recorded time, expenses and billing activity.
  • Teams that need payment flexibility without assembling separate billing tools.

Before choosing it for a regulated or e-billing-heavy practice, test the exact fields your clients demand, including task codes, invoice sequencing, LEDES output and trust-account treatment. A visually flexible invoice is not automatically an electronic bill that a corporate portal will accept.

Smokeball: automatic activity capture with legal billing

Smokeball is the clearest fit for firms that want software to capture activity in the background rather than rely entirely on lawyers starting and stopping timers. Its official pricing page states: AutoTime, Smokeball’s automatic time and activity tracking feature, is included with the Prosper+ plan. Lower tiers provide manual tracking, so automatic capture is a plan-level decision, not a product-wide assumption.

What automatic capture can and cannot do

Background capture can surface time spent drafting, emailing or working in a matter that a lawyer forgot to start manually. It still needs a matter match, a billable/non-billable decision, a sensible narrative and human approval. Sensitive personal activity, duplicated work and internal administration must be excluded under a written firm policy.

Published pricing references

A 2026 Clio comparison lists Smokeball Bill at $49 per user per month and Boost at $89 per user per month; Grow and Prosper are shown as quote-only tiers in that comparison. Because AutoTime is stated by Smokeball to be included with Prosper+, a firm pricing automatic capture should request a quote for that tier and confirm implementation, user minimums and included trust, billing and reporting features.

How automatic capture changes your controls

Automatic capture solves one narrow problem: forgotten activity. It does not remove the need for a timekeeping policy. Decide in advance which applications and activities may be captured, how private activity is excluded, who reviews suggested entries, and how quickly corrections must be made.

  1. Define capture boundaries. Exclude personal browsing, breaks, internal administration and privileged activity that should not appear in a client record.
  2. Set attribution rules. Require a matter, task code where relevant, billable status, rate and narrative before an entry can be invoiced.
  3. Review daily. Lawyers should approve or discard captured activity while the work is still fresh, rather than reconstructing a month at a time.
  4. Audit synchronization. For offline tools such as TimeSync, verify that queued entries upload once, retain their original timestamps and do not duplicate after a connection returns.
  5. Protect access. Use role permissions, approval stages and an edit history so staff cannot silently alter another timekeeper’s records.

Trust accounting, LEDES and e-billing: questions to test in a demo

Feature names are not enough for compliance-sensitive workflows. Give each vendor a representative matter and ask the demonstrator to complete these tests:

  • Open a trust matter, receive client funds, pay an approved expense, transfer earned fees and show the remaining client balance without commingling operating funds.
  • Enter time with your firm’s actual ABA task and activity codes, rates, discounts and narrative rules.
  • Generate the exact LEDES or portal file required by a corporate client, then show validation errors and correction steps.
  • Reverse a mistaken entry or payment and show the audit trail, permissions and approval history.
  • Apply a flat-fee or contingency matter where time is tracked for profitability but not billed hourly.

Ask whether each workflow is included in your selected plan, supported in your country and connected to your accounting system. The American Bar Association comparison chart is useful for discovery but explicitly says it is not comprehensive, so it should not replace a product demonstration or your jurisdiction’s trust-accounting requirements.

Implementation: a practical rollout that protects billable time

  1. Inventory your billing rules. List matter types, hourly and blended rates, minimum increments, rounding, discounts, write-down approvals, trust transfers and e-billing formats.
  2. Clean your matter list. Remove duplicates, standardize client and matter names, assign responsible lawyers and close inactive files before importing data.
  3. Build templates. Create common task codes, narratives, expense categories, invoice layouts and payment instructions so users do not improvise descriptions.
  4. Set permissions. Separate time entry, billing approval, trust transactions, refunds and report access. Require a documented approval step for edits after invoicing.
  5. Pilot with real files. Use one hourly matter, one flat-fee matter, one trust matter and one e-billing client. Compare invoices and balances with your existing records.
  6. Train on the daily habit. Teach users to start from the correct matter, review captured activity each day, record non-billable work and submit entries before the firm’s cutoff.
  7. Measure operational outcomes. Track missing entries, rejected e-bills, write-offs, invoice aging and time from work completion to invoice—not just total hours recorded.

Common failure modes and fixes

Lawyers still submit late or incomplete time

Make daily review part of the workflow, send cutoff reminders, and have supervisors inspect missing-entry reports. Automatic capture can provide prompts, but it cannot supply a defensible narrative for work the lawyer does not recognize.

Time is attached to the wrong matter

Reduce duplicate matter names, require matter selection before the timer starts, and review suggested matches. Never invoice an automatically associated entry without a human check.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Invoices are rejected by a corporate portal

Compare the rejected file with the client’s current LEDES specification, validate task and activity codes, confirm rate and tax fields, and test a correction-and-resubmission cycle before a live billing deadline.

Trust balances do not reconcile

Stop transfers, preserve the audit trail, reconcile each client ledger to the bank and operating accounts, and involve the firm’s accountant or ethics counsel. Do not repair a discrepancy by editing historical entries without documenting the correction.

Automatic capture records too much

Adjust application and activity exclusions, limit access to captured data, and publish a written policy covering personal use, privileged work, internal tasks and review responsibilities.

Frequently asked questions

Is a legal time tracker the same as an employee time clock?

No. A legal tracker must connect work to a client matter and billing rule, preserve narratives and approvals, and often support trust, e-billing and different fee arrangements. An employee clock usually records attendance or shifts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can automatic capture guarantee that every minute is billable?

No. It can reduce forgotten activity, but matter attribution, billable status, privacy filtering, narrative quality and partner review still determine whether an entry is accurate and appropriate to invoice.

Which option is best for a solo lawyer?

MyCase is a practical choice when simple matter-linked entries, invoices and online payments are the priority. Clio Starter is the broader option if you also need the surrounding practice-management platform and its cited legal billing capabilities.

Which product is most suitable for offline work?

TimeSolv has the clearest documented offline path through its TimeSync desktop app, which is described as working without an open browser and while offline. Confirm synchronization behavior and supported operating systems during evaluation.

Do all five products support LEDES and trust accounting?

No. The cited material specifically describes both for Clio and TimeSolv, and describes trust management for Smokeball. MyCase Basic and PracticePanther feature descriptions supplied here do not establish those capabilities, so firms with those requirements must verify them directly.

How reliable are the listed prices?

They are dated published references: Clio Starter at $39 per user per month billed annually in a 2025 guide; TimeSolv at $55, $53 or $50 by seat band in a 2026 comparison with lower annual rates; and Smokeball Bill at $49 and Boost at $89 in that comparison, with higher tiers quoted. Vendors can change prices, plan names, inclusions and trial terms, so request a current written quote.
