Microsoft Office for the web: the simplest starting point
Microsoft’s browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint let you create and edit files without installing the traditional desktop Office suite. You need a Microsoft account, and the free tier includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage. This can be a practical fit for Stream models with limited local storage or Windows in S mode, which restricts app installation to the Microsoft Store. Microsoft 365 for the web
Use the web versions when your work can happen online and you want to avoid an installer. For cloud use, plan on having an internet connection. If a particular file relies on specialized formatting or features, check that file in the web app before depending on it for important work.
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides: another browser-based suite

Before moving important work to Google’s apps, try the actual files and sharing workflow you use. The available information does not establish perfect Microsoft Office format fidelity or a universal offline setup, so verify those needs rather than assuming every feature or file will behave identically.
LibreOffice: a desktop option, subject to your Stream’s limits
LibreOffice is the desktop suite to consider if you need locally installed applications or want to work with files stored on the laptop. Its published system requirements list Windows 10 and Windows 11 support. That compatibility listing does not guarantee that the current suite will run well on every HP Stream configuration, or that every Microsoft Office file will retain all formatting and functionality. Before downloading it, check the exact model’s free storage, Windows version, and S mode status. These details determine whether installation is possible and whether you have room for the suite and your files.
Check the exact HP Stream before installing software
HP Stream is a family name, not a single hardware specification. For example, HP lists the 11-ak0012dx with Windows 10 Home in S mode and 64 GB eMMC storage; the 11-ak0053dx is listed with Windows 11 Home in S mode, 4 GB RAM, and 64 GB eMMC. HP’s Stream 11 Pro G5 datasheet lists 4 GB onboard memory across the configurations it describes. These examples do not define every Stream model. Find your exact model or SKU and check its specifications and available storage before installing a desktop suite. Find the model and available storage
- Check the product label or Windows system information for the full model number or SKU; do not rely on “HP Stream” alone.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage to see how much local space is available before downloading an installer.
- Confirm the installed Windows version and whether S mode is enabled before choosing a desktop app.
Understand the S mode restriction
Windows in S mode allows apps to be installed only from Microsoft Store. Microsoft says switching out of S mode is permanent; returning to S mode requires a reset or reload. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided under standard support. Check whether your specific Stream is eligible for an upgrade and what support applies to it; do not assume that every HP Stream can upgrade to Windows 11. Do not look for the retired Office Mobile apps
Microsoft says the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Mobile UWP apps for Windows are no longer available to download from Microsoft Store, and support ended October 14, 2025.
