If you want a character built around the study of arcane magic, the Wizard is the most direct fit in the official Dungeons & Dragons rules. If you mean a character with magical abilities or Arcana proficiency but not the Wizard’s scholarly identity, consider Sorcerer, Warlock, Bard, Eldritch Knight, or Arcane Trickster. These are concept matches, not a universal power ranking.
This guide compares the 2024 fifth-edition Basic Rules, with a brief note on the 2014 rules and a 2025 playtest document. “Arcana” can mean the Intelligence-based skill for magical knowledge, or it can be shorthand for an arcane-magic character concept; those are not the same thing.

Which D&D class best fits a scholarly arcane character?
For a character whose defining trait is learning magic through study, choose Wizard. The 2024 Basic Rules give the Wizard Intelligence as its primary ability and describe the class around the study of magic. Its features include a spellbook, Ritual Adept, Arcane Recovery, and preparing spells from that book. Arcana is also one of the Wizard’s available class-skill choices. The 2024 Wizard rules make it the clearest official match for an arcane scholar.
That does not make Wizard the only way to have Arcana proficiency. In the 2024 rules, Sorcerer can select Arcana as a skill proficiency, and Bard can choose any three skills. Skill proficiency represents knowledge; it does not determine where a character’s magic comes from or make that character a Wizard.

Best alternatives by character concept
Choose based on the story and play style you want—not on an unsupported claim that one option is strongest. The class descriptions and rules establish different identities, but do not provide a measured ranking of these options.
| Option | Best fit | Magic and character identity |
|---|---|---|
| Sorcerer | A character whose magic is innate | Charisma-based spellcaster; may select Arcana proficiency under the 2024 Basic Rules |
| Warlock | A character framed by occult knowledge and a patron | Pact magic and a patron-centered concept in the 2024 Basic Rules |
| Bard | A capable spellcaster who is also broadly skilled | Can choose any three skills under the 2024 Basic Rules |
| Eldritch Knight | A character who should primarily feel like a fighter | Fighter subclass with spellcasting; not equivalent to a full Wizard |
| Arcane Trickster | A character who should primarily feel like a rogue | Rogue subclass with spellcasting; not equivalent to a full Wizard |
Sorcerer: magic as an innate power
Pick Sorcerer if you want an arcane character whose identity is not built around academic study. In the 2024 Basic Rules, Sorcerer is a Charisma class and can select Arcana proficiency. That combination lets you portray a magically knowledgeable character without adopting the Wizard’s spellbook-centered scholarly framework.
Warlock: occult knowledge and a patron
Pick Warlock if the character’s magic is tied to a patron and an occult frame rather than years of independent study. The 2024 rules describe the class through occult knowledge and pact magic, giving it a distinct source and story for its abilities.

- Ability / Spell name and important info is easy to find for quick reference.
- Descriptive / Mechanical text is written in full wherever possible. When it isn’t, a Player’s Handbook page reference is given.
- Scaling spell-like abilities have an additional section with details on how they improve.
- Card backs prominently display class or race icons for easy sorting.
- The cards are highly durable and are made to last. Each card has a coating that protects them and makes them safe to use with dry erase markers.
Bard: magic plus broad skill coverage
Pick Bard if you want a spellcaster whose character concept also emphasizes varied expertise. The 2024 Basic Rules let Bards choose any three skills, which can include Arcana. That flexibility is useful when the character should know about magic but also be competent in several other areas.

Pick Eldritch Knight when the character should play and read first as a fighter, with magic as an added dimension. In the 2024 multiclass spell-slot calculation, Fighter levels count as one third of a level, rounded down, when the character has the Eldritch Knight subclass. This is a slot-calculation rule; it does not give the subclass the same spell access as a full Wizard. See the 2024 multiclass rules for the calculation.
Arcane Trickster: a rogue with magic
Pick Arcane Trickster if you want a rogue foundation rather than a full spellcaster’s identity. Under the same 2024 multiclass calculation, Rogue levels count as one third of a level, rounded down, for a character with the Arcane Trickster subclass. That rule concerns spell slots; it should not be read as giving the subclass a Wizard’s spell access.

Arcana proficiency or arcane spellcasting?
Start by deciding which of these you actually want:
- Arcana proficiency: Choose a class or other character option that grants the skill if your priority is identifying with knowledge of magic. The 2024 Basic Rules allow Wizard and Sorcerer to select Arcana, while Bard chooses any three skills.
- Arcane spellcasting: Choose based on the source and role of the magic: study and a spellbook for Wizard, innate power for Sorcerer, a patron and pact for Warlock, broad-skilled spellcasting for Bard, or a martial or rogue foundation with magic for Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster.
Having Arcana proficiency does not by itself grant spellcasting, and being a spellcaster does not by itself make a character a scholarly specialist. Use the character’s class and skill choices to express each part of the concept separately.
How the 2014 and 2024 rules differ for Wizards
The editions frame the Wizard differently in their class rules, so check which rules your table uses before choosing features. The 2014 Basic Rules describe the Wizard as a student of arcane magic, using a spellbook and choosing an Arcane Tradition at level 2. They list eight traditions: Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy, and Transmutation. The 2014 Wizard rules cover that version.

The 2024 Basic Rules instead describe the class through its spellbook, Ritual Adept, Arcane Recovery, and spell preparation from the book. Do not assume that a feature or subclass presentation from one version carries over unchanged to the other.
Are the 2025 Arcane Subclasses official?
No. Wizards of the Coast’s 2025 Unearthed Arcana: Arcane Subclasses document says it uses the 2024 Player’s Handbook rules, but labels its options experimental and in draft form: “They aren’t officially part of the game.” Read it as playtest material, not as a list of current official character options. Open the 2025 Arcane Subclasses playtest PDF for its stated status.
