The best alternative depends on where your authoritative business data already lives. Microsoft-centric organizations should start with Microsoft Copilot Studio; Google Cloud and data-platform teams should assess Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform; AWS teams choosing a new service should evaluate Amazon Bedrock AgentCore; Salesforce-led operations usually fit Agentforce; regulated enterprises needing centralized control across development styles should consider IBM watsonx Orchestrate. Zep is different: it is a context and memory layer for teams that already have an agent runtime and need shared, time-aware business context.

That distinction matters more than feature-count rankings. A complete agent platform provides development tools, model access, retrieval, action execution, runtime operations, identity, governance and observability. A business-suite extension keeps those capabilities close to an existing system of record. A context layer improves what agents know across systems but does not replace the runtime, tool execution or governance services you still need.

First decide which layer you are buying

“Business context” is not a single product category. The six options in this guide occupy different positions in an enterprise agent stack, so comparing them as if they were interchangeable can produce an expensive architectural mismatch.

Complete agent platforms

Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and IBM watsonx Orchestrate are designed to support much of the agent lifecycle. Their capabilities span some combination of model selection, development frameworks, grounding and retrieval, managed execution, identity, evaluation, monitoring and governance. They are candidates when you are building or standardizing agents across multiple departments and systems.

Business-suite agent extensions

Microsoft Copilot Studio and Salesforce Agentforce are strongest when the suite itself is already an authoritative operating environment. The value is not just an agent builder. It is the combination of existing identities, records, permissions, workflows and actions. If your teams work primarily in Microsoft 365, Power Platform or Dynamics 365, Copilot Studio can reduce integration work. If customer, sales, service or field operations run in Salesforce, Agentforce can keep agent decisions and actions close to CRM data.

Context and memory layers

Zep addresses a narrower but important problem: giving multiple agents a shared, durable and time-aware representation of business context. It is not a drop-in replacement for an agent runtime. You would still select a model, framework, execution environment, tool permissions and operational controls.

Detailed alternatives and where they fit

Microsoft Copilot Studio: the default for Microsoft estates

Copilot Studio is the practical starting point when Microsoft 365, Power Platform, SharePoint or Dataverse already hold the records employees use every day. Microsoft describes agents as assistants that understand business context and take action on a user’s behalf. In product terms, that context can come from Power Platform, Dynamics 365, websites and external systems.

The source catalog is unusually relevant to mixed business environments. It includes SharePoint and OneDrive for documents, Dataverse and Azure SQL for structured data, Azure AI Search for retrieval, and connectors for Salesforce, ServiceNow, Confluence, Jira and Azure DevOps. That breadth can reduce the number of custom ingestion pipelines you maintain.

Actions are as important as answers. Copilot Studio combines generative AI and knowledge with actions, connectors, REST APIs and MCP servers, and can expose agents across channels. A service-desk agent, for example, can retrieve a policy from SharePoint and then invoke a ServiceNow action rather than merely describe the next step.

  • Choose it when: Microsoft identity, tenant controls and Power Platform workflows are already standard.
  • Check before purchase: licensing and usage pricing, connector-specific permissions, tenant governance and how portable your agents must be outside Microsoft. These commercial details depend on your configuration and were not established here.
  • Architectural caution: confirm that every connector enforces the same user- and service-level permissions as the source system. A successful connection is not proof that least-privilege access is preserved.

Google Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform: broad managed lifecycle

Google positions Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform as a unified environment to build, deploy, govern and optimize enterprise agents. It combines Agent Studio, an Agent Development Kit, agent identity, Agent Gateway, Model Armor, RAG Engine, Vector Search, a managed runtime, sessions, evaluation and observability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Cloud’s 2026 documentation says the platform provides access to more than 200 foundation models. Treat that as a documented availability figure, not a performance ranking: model quality, latency, region, safety controls and cost still vary by model and workload.

The platform also emphasizes grounding and interoperability. Build documentation describes advanced search, MCP and A2A support in addition to retrieval services. This is attractive when one team wants managed controls while another needs open-source components or agents that communicate through emerging protocols.

  • Choose it when: your data and engineering teams already operate on Google Cloud, or you want one managed lifecycle from model choice through evaluation and observability.
  • Check before purchase: Google Cloud architecture fit, data residency, model costs and the operational complexity created by combining managed services with open-source components.
  • Proof-of-concept question: measure whether the chosen grounding path can respect row-, document- and application-level permissions, not merely whether it retrieves relevant text.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore: the current AWS path for new deployments

AWS documents that Amazon Bedrock Agents, now called Bedrock Agents Classic, is no longer open to new customers. New AWS projects should therefore assess Bedrock AgentCore rather than design around the Classic offering.

AgentCore is described as a secure, serverless runtime for dynamic agents and tools. It supports CrewAI, LangGraph, LlamaIndex, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK and Strands Agents, along with models from multiple vendors. MCP and A2A protocol support makes it possible to connect agents and tools without locking every component to one framework.

This flexibility is useful for engineering teams that already have an agent codebase. You can preserve a preferred framework while adopting managed runtime and enterprise controls instead of rewriting everything into a proprietary builder.

  • Choose it when: AWS is your operating environment and framework or model choice must remain flexible.
  • Check before purchase: the migration path from any existing Bedrock Agents Classic deployment, depth of integration with the AWS services you use, and cost visibility across runtime, models, retrieval and tool calls.
  • Migration discipline: inventory prompts, tools, IAM policies, memory, evaluation and telemetry separately. A runtime migration can preserve code while silently changing permissions or operational behavior.

Salesforce Agentforce: CRM-native context and actions

Agentforce is built around Salesforce data and CRM operations. Its building blocks allow agents to use CRM data, knowledge articles and fields, uploaded files and web sources, then invoke standard or custom actions.

That combination is most valuable when the system of record is Salesforce itself. A sales, service or field agent can work with the same customer, case, opportunity or service information that employees already use, while actions remain close to the permissions and workflow rules governing those records.

  • Choose it when: customer, sales, service or field workflows are centered in Salesforce and CRM-native actions matter more than a broad multi-cloud runtime.
  • Check before purchase: edition availability, usage limits, model and provider choices, data architecture outside Salesforce and the cost and maintenance burden of custom actions.
  • Boundary to test: identify which decisions require data outside Salesforce. If critical context lives in an ERP, data lake or collaboration system, validate retrieval, identity mapping and write-back behavior before committing.

IBM watsonx Orchestrate: governed multi-path development

IBM watsonx Orchestrate targets organizations that cannot standardize on one development style. Its documented options run from visual no-code design to pro-code work with an ADK, Python, APIs, Langflow, OpenAPI and MCP. It can also import LangGraph agents.

The control plane is positioned as the place for observability, optimization and governance regardless of where an agent was built. That separation can suit large or regulated organizations with central risk teams and distributed application teams.

  • Choose it when: governance must be centralized while departments retain different frameworks and skills.
  • Check before purchase: IBM Cloud and hybrid deployment fit, the maturity of skills and catalogs for the target department, and the total cost of operating imported frameworks.
  • Operating model question: define who owns an imported agent’s code, prompt changes, tool permissions, evaluation sets and incident response after it enters the central control plane.

Zep: a specialized context graph, not a replacement platform

Zep describes itself as a unified context layer for enterprise data. Its temporal knowledge graph combines conversations with structured business data and records how that data changes over time. The enterprise context graph model covers projects, products, operations and other business domains.

The temporal aspect addresses a common agent failure: treating yesterday’s truth as today’s truth. An agent that knows a customer’s current contract, project status and prior conversation can make a more useful decision than one that retrieves disconnected documents with no history. Zep’s stated goal is that every agent works from the same context built from business data, documents and conversations.

  • Choose it when: you already have an agent runtime or framework and need durable, shared, time-aware context across multiple agents.
  • Check before purchase: connector coverage, authorization, graph maintenance, latency and whether a separate context layer is justified instead of extending your existing retrieval system.
  • Boundary to test: verify that context returned to each agent is filtered by the requesting user, tenant, purpose and time validity. Shared context must not become shared access.

How to choose: a practical decision sequence

  1. Identify the system of record. List where customer, employee, financial, operational and technical data is authoritative. If one suite dominates, start with its native option: Microsoft for Microsoft estates or Salesforce for CRM-centered operations.
  2. Define the required control level. Decide whether you need centralized governance across many teams, formal evaluation and observability, hybrid deployment or only a governed assistant inside an existing suite.
  3. Separate retrieval from action. Write down the systems an agent must read and the actions it may execute. A platform that retrieves documents but cannot safely update a case, ticket or order does not meet an action-oriented requirement.
  4. Set your portability requirement. If you need to reuse existing LangGraph, CrewAI, LlamaIndex, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK or Strands Agents work, examine AgentCore and watsonx Orchestrate especially closely. If portability is less important than suite integration, Copilot Studio or Agentforce may reduce implementation effort.
  5. Choose the runtime boundary. Decide whether the vendor should manage sessions, execution, identity, evaluation and telemetry, or whether your platform team will own those services. This is the line separating a full platform from a context layer such as Zep.
  6. Run a permissioned pilot. Use representative users with different roles, records that change over time and at least one write action. Measure unauthorized retrieval, stale context, failed actions, escalation behavior and audit completeness.
  7. Model the complete cost. Include models, runtime, retrieval or vector services, tool calls, connector usage, storage, evaluation, observability, human review and the engineering time to maintain prompts and integrations. Published pricing was not established for these candidates, so request a configuration-specific estimate.

Due-diligence checklist before signing

  • Identity: Can the agent act as the user, a service principal or both? How are delegated permissions represented in logs?
  • Data boundaries: Are source-system permissions preserved during indexing, caching, retrieval and response generation?
  • Freshness: What is the delay between a source-system change and the context an agent sees? Can the system mark information as historical or superseded?
  • Actions: Are high-impact operations protected by approval, idempotency, transaction checks and rollback procedures?
  • Audit: Can you reconstruct the user request, retrieved evidence, model version, tool calls, approvals and final action?
  • Evaluation: Can teams run repeatable tests for factuality, permission leakage, tool selection, refusal and escalation?
  • Interoperability: Which frameworks, models and protocols are supported now, and which require custom adapters?
  • Operations: Who owns runtime upgrades, connector failures, model changes, latency incidents and emergency shutdown?
  • Exit: Can you export prompts, tools, conversation history, context graphs, evaluations and audit records if the architecture changes?

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by model count

A large model catalog does not guarantee accurate business answers. Google’s documented access to more than 200 foundation models is useful for selection, but grounding quality, permissions, latency and cost determine whether an agent is dependable in production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling a context layer a complete platform

Zep can improve shared context, but it does not remove the need for a runtime, model, tool permissions, action controls and operational monitoring. Budget and design for those components explicitly.

Ignoring the source system’s authorization model

Connecting SharePoint, Salesforce, ServiceNow or another system is only the first step. Test access with users who should see different records and documents, including revoked and recently changed permissions.

Building new AWS work on a closed path

Because AWS says Bedrock Agents Classic is no longer open to new customers, use AgentCore as the starting point for new designs and document any migration assumptions for existing Classic deployments.

Underestimating imported-agent ownership

Framework flexibility can spread responsibility. When importing a LangGraph agent into watsonx Orchestrate or running a framework-based agent on AgentCore, assign clear owners for code, prompts, tools, security reviews and evaluations.

Which option is best for each situation?

Situation Most logical starting point Why Primary validation
Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Dataverse and Power Platform are authoritative. Microsoft Copilot Studio Native access to Microsoft data, identity and workflows plus broad connectors. Connector permissions, tenant governance and portability.
Google Cloud is the strategic data and application platform. Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform Managed lifecycle, grounding, identity, evaluation, observability and broad model access. Residency, cost and managed/open-component complexity.
AWS is standard and new agents must support several frameworks or model vendors. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Serverless runtime with framework, model, MCP and A2A flexibility. Classic migration, AWS integration depth and cost allocation.
Salesforce records and CRM actions drive the workflow. Salesforce Agentforce CRM-native context, permissions and standard or custom actions. Edition limits and non-Salesforce data access.
Many teams build differently but central governance is mandatory. IBM watsonx Orchestrate No-code through pro-code paths and a central control plane for imported agents. Hybrid fit, catalog maturity and operating cost.
An existing runtime needs durable, shared, time-aware context. Zep Temporal knowledge graph for conversations and structured business data. Authorization, freshness, latency and graph maintenance.

Final buying principle

Start with the system of record and the action boundary, not with a feature checklist. Select Copilot Studio or Agentforce when a business suite already governs the data and workflows. Select Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, AgentCore or watsonx Orchestrate when you need a broader managed lifecycle or multi-framework operating model. Select Zep only when the missing capability is shared, durable business context and you are prepared to supply the rest of the agent stack.
