For a touchscreen Kindle, the most dependable hands-free option is a clip-on RF page-turner that physically taps the display. If you own a 2024 Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition or Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation), try the built-in double-tap feature first. Kindle books read in a tablet app can use a Bluetooth controller such as Bookmote; readers willing to leave Kindle can choose an e-reader with physical buttons, such as Kobo Libra Colour. Kindle Click is a newer announced option, but its exact model support and regional availability need confirmation on the current Amazon listing.

Choose the right alternative first

Hands-free page turning is not one universal feature. Kindle e-readers, Kindle apps, and other e-readers accept different kinds of input, so a remote that works with an Android tablet may do nothing on a stock Paperwhite. Use this decision path before buying anything:

  1. Keep a touchscreen Kindle and want silent, visual reading: choose a clip-on RF screen-contact page-turner, after checking the exact Kindle generation, bezel and case clearance.
  2. Own a Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition or Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation), both 2024 releases: try accelerometer-based double tapping on the side or back before adding an accessory.
  3. Read Kindle books in the Kindle app on an iPad or Android tablet: use a controller that sends standard Bluetooth keyboard or volume-key input, such as Bookmote.
  4. Prefer spoken navigation or have limited visual access: use Kindle Assistive Reader with an Alexa built-in device.
  5. Want physical page buttons built into the reader: consider moving to Kobo Libra Colour, or look at Android-based readers such as BOOX Palma 2.
  6. Considering a newly announced Kindle remote: Kindle Click is described as a Bluetooth page-turn remote, but verify the live product listing for supported models and availability.

The comparison below shows what each route actually controls and where it works.

Clip-on RF page-turners: the safest choice for a touchscreen Kindle

A clip-on RF page-turner solves the compatibility problem by touching the screen for you. The clip sits over the Kindle display, and a small actuator lands on the page-turn area. Pressing its separate RF handset makes the actuator contact the glass. Because the Kindle sees an ordinary screen tap, this arrangement does not depend on Bluetooth keyboard support inside the e-reader.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

An Amazon forum response to a question about Kindle remote control points readers toward a third-party clip-on page-turner (Amazon forum discussion). A manufacturer manual for this type of accessory says its remote uses RF, needs no Bluetooth pairing, and changes pages when the remote button is pressed (manufacturer manual). That physical approach is why it remains the most dependable general answer for dedicated touchscreen Kindles.

Check fit before ordering

Compatibility is mechanical, not merely electronic. Confirm the exact Kindle generation named by the accessory maker, then check:

  • Bezel shape: the clip must sit squarely without covering text or missing the active page-turn area.
  • Case clearance: a folio, thick bumper or raised edge can keep the actuator from reaching the glass.
  • Screen orientation: verify whether the design is intended for portrait reading and whether it can be repositioned for left-hand use.
  • Page direction: establish which handset button advances and which reverses before settling in bed.
  • Charging or batteries: follow the particular manual; the RF design removes Bluetooth pairing, but it still has its own power requirement.

Do not assume that a clip made for one Paperwhite generation will fit another. The frame, bezel and case combination can change even when the screen size looks similar. If the clip rocks, presses a neighboring control or leaves a gap above the display, return it rather than forcing the actuator against the screen.

Set up a clip-on unit

  1. Remove or loosen the Kindle case if its edge prevents the clip from sitting flat.
  2. Open a book and place the clip over the display according to the accessory manual, aligning the actuator with the page-turn area.
  3. Tap the handset once and watch for a single page advance. Test the reverse control as well.
  4. Move the clip a few millimeters if the tap misses, advances twice or triggers an unwanted control.
  5. Mark the reliable position or leave the clip installed if you use the same reading setup regularly.

RF is useful beside a bed because it avoids the Kindle’s Bluetooth settings, but it does not make an incompatible clip fit. The exact model and case check remains the deciding step.

Double-tap control on two newer Kindle models

Amazon documents one-handed, accelerometer-based tap detection on the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition and Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation), both identified as 2024 releases. Amazon says that double tapping the side or back advances the page (Kindle Help: tap detection).

This is the lowest-effort solution when your reader is one of those two editions: no clip to align, no remote to charge and no separate radio connection. It is especially convenient when one hand is holding the Kindle and the other cannot comfortably reach the display.

Use and troubleshoot the gesture

  • Hold the Kindle securely, then double tap the side or back with a finger or knuckle.
  • Use two distinct taps rather than one long press; the accelerometer is looking for a tap pattern.
  • If nothing happens, remove a third-party case temporarily. Amazon warns that the feature may not work through every case.
  • Test the gesture in a normal book page before assuming the hardware is defective.
  • If your model is not one of the two named Signature Editions, do not infer support from a similar-looking Kindle or from a software update announcement.

Double-tap is a model-specific convenience, not a general Bluetooth remote protocol. It also advances by detecting movement, so it will not provide the same tactile certainty as a physical page button or a clip that visibly contacts the screen.

Kindle Assistive Reader for voice-controlled reading

If the goal is to avoid touching the reader altogether, spoken navigation can be more useful than a silent page-turn accessory. Amazon’s Kindle Assistive Reader lets Alexa read supported Kindle books and accepts voice controls (Kindle Assistive Reader help). Amazon describes it as: “Turn on Kindle Assistive Reader to read books with Alexa and control Alexa’s reading with your voice.”

What voice control covers

With Assistive Reader active on an Alexa built-in device, Amazon lists commands to:

  • Pause and restart reading.
  • Navigate by chapter.
  • Move by a time interval.
  • Change reading speed.
  • Set a stop timer.

This route is designed for audio-first access. It does not silently flip the visible Kindle page in response to a remote button, and the listening experience depends on whether the particular book and Alexa setup support Assistive Reader. Choose it when spoken content, hands-free control or reduced visual demand matters more than silent reading.

Bookmote and other Bluetooth controllers for tablet Kindle apps

Bookmote is a software-based alternative for people who read Kindle books in the Kindle app on a tablet rather than on a dedicated Kindle e-reader. Its Google Play listing says it pairs as a standard Bluetooth keyboard, accepts volume keys or on-screen controls, and supports Kindle books in the Kindle app on iPad or Android tablets (Bookmote listing).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up the tablet workflow

  1. Install Bookmote on the compatible tablet or phone setup described by its listing.
  2. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode and pair it through the tablet’s Bluetooth settings.
  3. Open the Kindle app, load a book and choose either the controller’s volume-key behavior or Bookmote’s on-screen controls.
  4. Press the page-turn command while watching the app. Confirm that one press produces one page movement.
  5. Keep the tablet awake and within normal Bluetooth range while reading.

The important boundary is the operating system. The same listing explicitly says that stock Kindle Paperwhite, Oasis and Scribe firmware does not accept Bookmote’s Bluetooth keyboard input. Installing the app cannot change that firmware limitation, so this is a tablet-app solution, not a universal Kindle e-reader remote.

Switch to an e-reader with built-in page buttons

If physical controls are essential and you are willing to leave the Kindle ecosystem, buying a reader designed around page buttons avoids the remote-compatibility problem entirely.

Kobo Libra Colour

Kobo Libra Colour is the clearest replacement for readers who want familiar e-reader ergonomics with dedicated physical page-turn buttons. T3 names it its best all-round Kindle alternative and notes that the buttons allow reading with very little hand movement (T3’s e-reader alternatives guide).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is ecosystem migration. Books, purchases, notes and syncing follow Kobo’s platform rather than Kindle’s library system. Before switching, confirm that the titles you need are available in the new store or can be legally loaded in a supported format. The physical buttons themselves are the reason to choose it: page advance is built into the chassis, so there is no clip alignment, Bluetooth pairing or touchscreen gesture to learn.

BOOX Palma 2

T3 describes BOOX Palma 2 as a pocket-sized Android e-reader that can run apps. That makes it relevant when you want an e-ink-style reading device but also need the flexibility of Android applications. A Kindle app may be possible in an Android environment, but app compatibility, performance and controls depend on the installed software and current support; it is not the same as a Kindle-branded reader with guaranteed Kindle firmware behavior.

Choose Palma 2 when app flexibility and a small form factor matter more than a dedicated Kindle workflow. Test the exact reading app and page-control method before making it your primary hands-free device.

Hannspree Lumo

T3 describes Hannspree Lumo as using a reflective LCD and requiring the reader to choose an ebook app. It therefore belongs in the “select your software” category rather than the “drop-in Kindle replacement” category. The display technology and app choice may suit someone who wants a different screen approach, but the hands-free experience depends on whichever ebook application is installed.

Kindle Click: a newer announced remote

Amazon’s 2026 Kindle refresh was reported to introduce Kindle Click. Android Central describes it as “a Bluetooth remote that lets you turn pages without touching the reader” (Android Central report).

That announcement establishes the product concept, not universal compatibility. Before purchasing, verify three items on the live Amazon listing for your country:

  • The Kindle models and software versions officially supported.
  • Whether the remote is sold in your region and ships with the required receiver or accessories.
  • Whether a case, landscape orientation or accessibility setting changes its operation.

Until those details are confirmed for your model, treat Kindle Click as a promising first-party option rather than a guaranteed replacement for an RF screen-contact clip.

Why generic Bluetooth remotes often fail on Kindle

Bluetooth alone does not guarantee page turning. Dedicated Kindle e-readers may ignore keyboard, volume or media-control events that a tablet accepts. That is why a controller can work perfectly in an Android or iPad app yet fail on stock Kindle firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BOOX Tappy illustrates the risk. TechRadar reports that it uses Bluetooth 5.4 with an approximately 10-meter range, yet failed to turn pages when paired with three Kindles. The report attributes the limitation to differences between e-reader operating systems (TechRadar hands-on report, published June 12, 2026).

Do not treat a generic Bluetooth camera shutter, media remote or another e-reader’s controller as a safe Kindle purchase without model-specific evidence. A device may pair successfully and still send commands the Kindle does not map to next-page or previous-page actions. The practical alternatives are to use a physical screen-contact mechanism, a documented built-in gesture, an app environment known to accept the input, or a reader with native buttons.

Match the solution to your reading situation

Reading silently in bed

Start with the clip-on RF design if you have a touchscreen Kindle. It keeps the Kindle’s normal display and library, and the handset can be operated without reaching for the screen. Check that the clip does not catch on bedding and that the case can remain installed or be removed quickly.

Holding the Kindle with one hand

Owners of the supported 2024 Colorsoft Signature Edition or Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation) should test double tapping first. If the case blocks detection or the model is different, an RF clip provides a separate physical control instead.

Limited hand movement

Choose the interface requiring the smallest reliable motion. A double tap may be easier than reaching the display, while a large RF handset button can be better when precise tapping is difficult. For readers who prefer not to look at the page or need spoken access, Assistive Reader shifts the interaction to voice commands.

Visual-access needs

Assistive Reader is the option in this list built around spoken playback, with chapter, time, speed and timer controls. Silent remotes still require visual access to follow the text and confirm that a page changed.

Reading Kindle books on a tablet

Use a tablet-app controller rather than trying to force e-reader firmware to accept keyboard events. Bookmote’s documented scope is the Kindle app on iPad and Android tablets; its listing excludes stock Paperwhite, Oasis and Scribe firmware.

Willing to change ecosystems

Kobo Libra Colour offers the simplest physical-button experience among the alternatives described here. BOOX Palma 2 and Hannspree Lumo offer app flexibility, but you must evaluate the chosen ebook app and its controls as part of the purchase decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-purchase and setup checklist

  • Write down the full Kindle model name and generation from the device settings or purchase record.
  • Measure or inspect the case edge where a clip would sit; remove the case for a fit test if necessary.
  • Decide whether you need silent page advance, spoken reading or both.
  • For a Bluetooth product, confirm that the documentation names your exact device or app, not merely “e-readers.”
  • For a tablet solution, check the current app listing, supported operating system and required permissions.
  • For a replacement reader, verify library availability and export or format requirements before moving purchases.
  • Test one page forward and one page back before settling into a long reading session.

Prices, stock, regional sales and compatibility can change, especially for newly announced hardware and software controllers. Check the current manufacturer or store listing immediately before ordering and retain the return option until the accessory has passed a real reading session with your case and preferred book.

Bottom line

A clip-on RF screen-contact page-turner remains the best general alternative for a touchscreen Kindle because it works at the display layer and avoids uncertain Bluetooth support. Use double-tap on the supported 2024 Signature Editions, Assistive Reader when voice control is the priority, and Bookmote only with Kindle books running in a tablet app. If built-in buttons matter more than staying in Kindle, Kobo Libra Colour is the most direct replacement; Kindle Click may become a first-party choice once its model and regional support are confirmed.
