ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: At First Glance

Once again, ASUS raises the bar with this versatile performer – the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370. ASUS claimed that the ZenBook Flip S is the thinnest convertible available, and it almost feels so.

For ASUS, making such a light and thin convertible laptop packed with so much power isn’t an easy feat. However, it managed to pull it off.

Not only that, but ASUS also managed to make the price of the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 quite competitive. Speaking of the cost, when I wrote this article in February 2022, the laptop had a starting price of $999. 99.

Is the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 worth the hype it was given by its manufacturer? Read on to find out.

ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: Design, Dimensions, and Weight

The design of the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 is undoubtedly impressive. Although light, thin, and beautiful laptops are not very rare these days, the sheer class of the Flip S is distinctive.

It has a slimline aluminum casing that feels sturdy enough to cope with the harshness of being on the road. Moreover, ASUS freely included even a protecting sleeve to keep the chassis from scratches.

Every part of the laptop’s exterior is covered in metal, which offers an instantly premium feel. It also feels pleasant to the touch, unlike some other aluminum-built laptops with a little aggressive brushed effect.

ASUS made the aluminum case of the Flip S UX370 available in Smoky Grey and Royal Blue colors. Both colors are good-looking; hence, you can choose the one that suits your personality best.

With the Flip S UX370 being a convertible laptop, the hinge is important, and thankfully it meets the standard. The hinges are solid and firm.

You can use the Flip S UX370 in tent mode by folding the keyboard backward and using it as a stand. The tent mode is perfect for presentations.

Additionally, you can fold the keyboard completely backward to use the Flip S UX370 in tablet mode. The tablet mode is perfect for streaming videos or browsing the web.

Thankfully, the hinges don’t only make it easy to flip the screen around. They also make the Flip S UX370 stay put at any angle you position it.

Proceeding to the screen, it employs a ‘NanoEdge’ technology. NanoEdge is used to describe a screen surrounded by very thin bezels.

Meanwhile, the Zenbook Flip S UX370 has a screen size of 13.3-inch. The display supports two resolutions, this implies that you can set the resolution you prefer in the display settings.

Speaking of the resolutions, you can choose an FHD (1920 x 1080) resolution or 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) resolution. However, the UHD resolution takes a toll on battery consumption.

Hence, to make the battery last longer, you should set the display resolution to FHD. Thankfully, the FHD display resolution is vibrant but not as much as the UHD display.

Furthermore, this laptop’s screen hits a 100 percent reproduction of the sRGB color gamut. Therefore, the colors are very vivid.

Additionally, the glossy screen has a maximum brightness of 350 nits which makes it suitable for outdoor use. Meanwhile, despite the glossiness of the screen, the Zenbook Flip S UX370 handles reflection well.

Another impressive feature of the display is that it supports multitouch gestures. This is ideal when using Windows 10 with the included stylus pen or your fingers.

Speaking of the stylus, ASUS includes one with this laptop. It looks the same as an Apple Pencil and functions similarly.

The stylus pen is great if you intend to draw on the screen or generally interact with the Flip S in tablet mode.

Moving on to the audio, although the ZenBook Flip S is tiny, ASUS still packed some serious speakers into it. The laptop features two stereo speakers, but you will need to do a bit of manual tuning to get the bass.

Impressively, playing music and watching movies with the laptop should give an impressive sound.

Proceeding to the keyboard, one might expect a poor keyboard on this laptop to compromise its good display. However, that isn’t the case as the keyboard is intuitive and spacious.

Furthermore, the keyboard has no odd key placements or clustered keys like some laptops. Also, the backlighting works very well with nice, even, and easy-to-see lettering.

The essential action is also fantastic, with an even response that allows you to know when you’ve hit a key.

For the trackpad, it is large and responsive. It also has a smooth aluminum surface which enables your fingers to slide effortlessly across it.

Tracking is also absolutely accurate, and the click motion is light. In short, the trackpad is absolutely a joy to use.

Moving on to the ports, unsurprisingly, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 does not pack so many ports. Again, this is a result of its slim build.

The laptop has two USB 3.1 Type C ports and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports on each side. This ASUS 2-in-1 laptop also has a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

As for wireless connectivity, the laptop features Bluetooth version 4.1 and 802.11ac (2×2) wireless LAN.

Having talked about the design features of the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370, let us talk about its size and weight. ASUS made no jokes when it announced the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 as the world’s lightest and thinnest laptop.

This claim seems valid with the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 weighing only 1100 g.

Not only is this laptop lightweight, but it is also ultraportable and super compact. Its dimensions measures only 323 x 218 x 10.9 mm (W x D x H).

It is lighter than its competitor, HP Spectre x360, which weighs 1,270 g. Also, the HP Spectre has a dimension of 306.8 x 194.5 x 17 mm (W x D x H).

In conclusion, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 offers a premium and sleek design. Hence, it will be appropriate to rate it nine in this design, dimension, and weight review section.

ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: Processor (CPU) Performance

The ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 features an Intel Core i7-8565U processor. This processor has a base frequency of 1.80 GHz and a maximum frequency of 4.00 GHz.

The Flip S UX370 processor is designed to handle complex computing tasks based on its processor’s specs. Hence, using this laptop to carry out tasks like video editing will not make it slow.

Next up, let me further explain the processing power of the Flip S UX370’s processor. To do this, I will share the laptop’s test results on the single-core and multi-core Geekbench 4 tests.

Geekbench 4 benchmark is a test tool that evaluates a computer’s capability to carry out office-related computing tasks. Furthermore, a high score on the test implies that the computer’s processor is speedy, while a low score means that the processor is slow.

Impressively, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 delivered a score of 4,715 points in the single-core test. Likewise, it scored 14,075 points in the multi-core test.

Comparatively, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 scored above the HP Spectre x360 and Samsung Notebook 9 Pro. Specifically, these competitors scored 8,147 points and 8,597 points, respectively, in the Geekbench 4 multi-core test.

In conclusion, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 proves that it is a sleek laptop and has good performing power. Therefore, I rate it nine out of ten in this review section.

ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: Memory (RAM) Performance

The ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 offers two memory configurations. One, with an 8 GB LPDDR3 RAM and another with a 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM.

Both memory configurations come with just a single RAM slot. Meanwhile, the Zenbook Flip S UX370’s memory is not user upgradable.

The choice of which memory configuration to purchase will depend on the tasks you will want the system to perform for you. However, the 16 GB memory configuration will deliver a better performance than the 8 GB configuration.

For this review, we will focus on the performance of the 8 GB memory configuration. Performance-wise, the 8 GB RAM on the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 should comfortably open up to 20 Chrome browser tabs.

Some Chrome tabs might include streaming videos on YouTube, web browsing, and word processing. Not only that, but smoothly switching between the chrome tabs will also not be difficult.

The performance of the memory can be further confirmed by the laptop’s fantastic result on the PCMark 8 test. For clarity, PCMark 8 is a benchmark test that tells a laptop’s ability to handle multitasking and day-to-day computing tasks.

As you might already guess, a higher score in the PCMark 8 benchmark means better performance.

Therefore, in the PCMark 8 benchmark test, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 scored 3521 points, which is virtually above average.

The ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370’s impressive performance doesn’t only end there. It also outperforms the Lenovo Yoga C640 on the same benchmark test.

Specifically, the Lenovo Yoga C640 scored 3,313 points on the PCMark 8 test. Therefore, with this test result, it is right to say that this laptop has the needed power to handle any computing task.

Overall, the performance of the 8 GB RAM configuration is impressive. However, you can expect that the 16 GB memory configuration will do better.

In conclusion, this laptop’s memory proves to be a good multitasker. Hence, I rate the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 eight in this memory review section.

ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: Storage Options and Performance

The storage drive found in the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 is an M.2 SATA SSD or M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. The two storage options are SSDs but with different connectors.

The M.2 SATA SSD has a SATA connector, while the NVMe PCIe SSD comes with a PCIe connector. The M.2 SATA SSD has a 1 TB maximum storage size for the storage sizes.

Meanwhile, the NVMe PCIe SSD has a 512 GB maximum storage size.

Unfortunately, there is no provision for storage expansion as there is no SD card slot. Like the memory, choosing which storage configuration to purchase will depend on your storage needs.

Obviously, the 1 TB storage configuration will deliver more space than the 512 GB configuration. Meanwhile, you will get the 1 TB configuration for a few more dollars.

This review is centered on the storage performance of the 512 GB SSD. With that being said, let us now examine how the laptop’s SSD storage coped in a file transfer test.

Since SSDs are popular for their high speed, one would expect an excellent performance from the laptop. Thankfully, that is just what the laptop offers.

The laptop was able to transfer 4.97 GB of multimedia files at a transfer rate of 145.4 megabytes per second (MB/s).

Comparatively, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 offered a faster transfer rate than the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro. Specifically, on the same file transfer test, the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro delivered a transfer rate of 300 MBps.

To further confirm how fast the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370’s SSD is, I will share the laptop’s outcome in a Crystaldiskmark test. Crystaldiskmark is a benchmark test that calculates the writes and read speed of a system’s storage drive.

To be clear, read speed implies how fast a computer’s storage can open a file. On the other hand, write speed means the time it takes the storage to save a file.

In the Crystaldiskmark benchmark test, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 had a sequential read speed of 1112.1 MB/s. Meanwhile, when it comes to the write speed, it had 726.5 MB/s.

In comparison, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370’s read and write speeds are faster than that of the Acer Nitro 5 Spin. According to the benchmark test result, the Acer Nitro 5 Spin had a read speed of 484 MB/s.

Also, Acer Nitro 5 Spin had a sequential write speed of 408.5 MB/s.

In conclusion, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 has sufficient storage space and excellent storage speed. Therefore, I rate the laptop eight out of ten in this review section.

ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: Graphics Card Performance

In terms of the graphics card, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 features an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 Graphics. This graphics card has a base frequency of 300 MHz and a maximum frequency of 1150 MHz.

Being an integrated GPU, it does not have a dedicated VRAM. Therefore, the laptop lacks the ability to run most title AAA games.

If you wish to play games like Doom or The Witcher 3, you’ll have to do so on the lowest settings. Notwithstanding, less demanding like Asphalt 8: Airborne and FIFA 12 will smoothly run on the laptop at whatever graphics settings.

That said, let me discuss the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 performance on a 3DMark test. But first, 3DMark is a GPU benchmark test that examines how well a laptop can render graphics in 3D.

In this benchmark test, the higher the score, the better the graphics performance. Meanwhile, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 scored 76,333 points in the 3DMark test.

While that’s above the average score of 56,624 points, it is also above the scores of two competitors of the Zenbook Flip S UX370. Speaking of which, the Lenovo X1 Yoga scored below the Zenbook Flip S UX370 with 76,248 points.

Likewise, the HP Spectre x360 scored 70,494 points.

From the details above, I believe the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 deserves eight out of ten in this review section.

ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370: Battery Life and Performance

In the aspect of battery, the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 uses a 2-cell, 39Whr Lithium-polymer battery. The advertised battery life for this laptop is 10 hours.

However, hyped battery life is very common as everyone wants a laptop with long battery life. Hence, a real-life battery test is best to confirm the advertised battery life of a computer.

This test is a video playback test that involves setting the laptop’s brightness to its maximum. Additionally, the laptop’s volume was set to 50%, while a 4K resolution video was played continuously until the laptop went off.

The laptop endured for 7 hours and 8 minutes based on the battery test. Unfortunately, this battery life is less than the 8 hours 18 minutes average.

Moreso, the battery life is below that of the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro (8 hours 9 minutes).

After thoroughly considering the battery test result, I will rate the ASUS Zenbook Flip S UX370 seven out of ten in this battery review section.
