Updated August 10, 2026: Apple has not officially announced a foldable iPhone, but the project now appears substantially more credible than the earlier rumor cycle suggested. Reports from multiple sources point to an inward-folding, book-style iPhone with a roughly 7.7- to 7.8-inch inner display, a 5.3- to 5.5-inch outer display, and software designed to recognize the device’s fold state and hinge angle.

The leading expectation is an announcement in September 2026, potentially alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. However, announcement and availability may not happen at the same time. Hinge engineering, display yields, memory supply, and assembly constraints could result in a later fall launch or limited initial inventory. The rumored price is above $2,000, with some estimates reaching approximately $2,399 to $2,500.

In short: Apple appears to be preparing a foldable iPhone, but the name, final specifications, price, crease performance, camera system, and retail date remain unconfirmed.

Apple’s Foldable iPhone for 2026: Key Rumors

The short version

Question Current information Confidence
Is it real? Multiple reports indicate an active Apple foldable-phone project, but Apple has not announced a product. High for the project; not confirmed as a retail product
Expected name iPhone Ultra is the most common label. iPhone Fold is also used as a placeholder. Medium
Design Book-style, inward-folding phone with a larger interior screen. Medium-high
Inner display Approximately 7.7 to 7.8 inches. Medium-high
Outer display Approximately 5.3 to 5.5 inches. Medium-high
Software iOS 27 beta references fold state, hinge angles, and multiple displays; an iPad-like interface is rumored. High for the software evidence; medium for the final user experience
Biometrics Touch ID in the power button is widely rumored instead of the current Face ID system. Medium
Cameras Most reports describe two rear cameras, often a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. Low-medium
Price More than $2,000 is the prevailing estimate; some predictions reach $2,399 to $2,500. Medium for the price class; low for the exact price
Launch September 2026 unveiling is plausible. Sales could follow later in the fall or begin with limited supply. Medium-high for the announcement window; medium for availability

These confidence levels matter because rumor pages often present an analyst forecast, a single-leaker claim, an accessory image, and a report from a major publication as though they were equivalent evidence. They are not.

Why the foldable iPhone rumor is credible now

There is still no official confirmation. Apple’s current iPhone Newsroom page and iPhone announcement archive do not list a foldable iPhone as of August 10, 2026.

However, several independent strands of reporting now point in the same direction:

  • The Information reported that Apple had moved forward with a foldable iPhone and had contacted Asian suppliers for components.
  • Bloomberg reported that the device would use an iPad-like interface when opened, including layouts designed for side-by-side apps.
  • 9to5Mac’s analysis of iOS 27 beta code identified references to fold states, hinge angles, and the number of built-in displays. The references were reportedly present in developer frameworks and beta code, but not in iOS 26.
  • Samsung Display is widely reported to be preparing foldable OLED panels for Apple, while supply-chain reporting has also described Foxconn production work, component deliveries, and final production adjustments.

The iOS evidence is especially significant because software that can detect foldState, angleDegrees, mechanicalAngleDegrees, and a device’s display count would make little sense for an ordinary iPhone. It strongly suggests that Apple is preparing software for a foldable or another multi-display device. It does not prove the final hardware design, commercial name, price, or release date.

The most accurate description is therefore: Apple appears to be preparing a foldable iPhone. It is too strong to call the rumored iPhone Ultra confirmed.

What will Apple’s foldable iPhone look like?

A book-style foldable is the leading design

The dominant rumor is an inward-folding, book-style design rather than a small clamshell phone like a flip phone. When closed, it would behave like a conventional smartphone with a usable outer screen. When opened horizontally, it would expose a much larger interior display with a wide, almost square shape.

MacRumors has reported that Apple tested different concepts, including clamshell designs, before reportedly selecting the book-style approach. MacRumors’ iPhone Ultra roundup and Macworld’s coverage both describe a phone-tablet hybrid rather than a traditional flip phone.

The result could look more like a compact tablet when opened: a wide inner screen suited to reading, email, documents, web browsing, video calls, calendars, messaging, and multitasking. That does not mean every iPhone application will immediately fill the entire interior display. Apple can provide system-level layouts, but third-party developers will still need to test and optimize their apps for the new aspect ratio.

Rumored display sizes

Display Reported range What the range means
Inner display About 7.7 to 7.8 inches Large enough to approach a small-tablet experience when open
Outer display About 5.3 to 5.5 inches Usable for ordinary phone tasks while closed
Open aspect ratio Approximately 4:3 Wider and squarer than a typical tall iPhone display

The size variation is normal for an unreleased product. The Information has been associated with figures around 7.7 inches inside and 5.3 inches outside, while reports citing analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, TrendForce, and MacRumors have repeatedly used approximately 7.8 inches and 5.5 inches. The difference may reflect different prototypes, rounding, or specifications that have not been finalized.

Will the screen really be crease-free?

Probably not in the literal sense implied by the phrase. The more defensible expectation is a display that may be visually near-crease-free compared with current foldables, rather than a panel guaranteed to be invisible at every viewing angle and under every type of light.

Reports say Apple has prioritized reducing both the visible and tactile crease. Samsung Display is widely expected to supply the foldable OLED panel. Reporting and analyst notes have associated the panel with:

  • Color filter on Encapsulation, or CoE: a technology that removes the conventional polarizer and may help reduce panel thickness and improve optical characteristics.
  • Metal support plates: structures intended to distribute bending stress across the screen.
  • Laser-drilled structures: reportedly used to spread stress around the folding area.
  • Fine M-Tec: a supplier reported to be involved in metal support or hinge-related plates.

MacRumors’ report on Samsung-made OLED panels, based on supply-chain and analyst reporting, describes the display approach. A separate Weibo claim said testing had achieved a visually crease-free result with long-term stability. That is a leaker’s claim, not an independent durability test or Apple documentation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

There are two separate engineering goals here:

  1. Crease reduction: making the fold line less visible or noticeable during ordinary use.
  2. Long-term durability: keeping the display flat, aligned, responsive, and free of damage after years of folding.

Success at one does not guarantee success at the other. A retail unit may look excellent in a product demonstration and still develop a visible crease, looseness, or display problem after extensive use. Claims such as “completely crease-free” should therefore be treated cautiously until independent long-term testing exists.

The hinge may be the make-or-break component

Liquid Metal is a rumor, not a complete hinge specification

Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that Apple planned to use Liquid Metal materials in critical hinge components to improve durability, flatness, and crease control. Kuo also linked the work to Dongguan EonTec. His original claim is available in this post, with further reporting from MacRumors.

Other reports mention titanium for structural elements, stainless steel in parts of the hinge, aluminum elsewhere in the frame, ultra-thin glass above the flexible OLED, and a 3D-printed hinge. These claims may describe different parts of the assembly rather than mutually exclusive designs. The material name is less important to buyers than whether the finished hinge remains stable and reliable.

Reported hinge problems and later fixes

A Weibo leaker reportedly claimed that the hinge was failing Apple’s quality standards after prolonged, high-frequency opening and closing. Other reports said hinge issues could delay production. Later supply-chain reports claimed that the problems had largely been resolved and that production was still on track for a September debut.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9to5Mac reported on the earlier hinge and crease concerns, while MacRumors covered later reports saying the schedule remained intact. A subsequent 9to5Mac report said hinge problems were reportedly solved.

A production fix is not the same as proven consumer durability. The hinge must remain:

  • Resistant to dust and debris
  • Strong enough to protect the flexible display from repeated stress
  • Stable at different opening angles

There is no public durability test that verifies the rumored Apple hinge. Be skeptical of unsupported figures such as a specific number of folding cycles, a multi-year lifespan, or claims that the hinge is dramatically more durable than competing designs. A CMB International investor report includes detailed durability and sensor claims, but those figures have not been corroborated by Apple or the strongest independent reporting.

How thin will it be?

Several rumor roundups cite approximately 4.5mm when unfolded and roughly 9 to 9.5mm when folded. Other reports suggest a folded thickness closer to 11mm. The measurement is unresolved, and the numbers may not be directly comparable.

For any thickness claim, readers should ask whether the figure includes the hinge, camera bump, cover glass, outer shell, and thickest point. A device described as 4.5mm per half would not necessarily measure exactly 9mm everywhere when closed, because the hinge and camera module can add thickness.

Thinness also creates trade-offs. Less internal volume can limit space for:

  • Battery cells
  • Cooling hardware
  • Large camera sensors and telephoto optics
  • Structural reinforcement
  • Hinge mechanisms
  • Water and dust resistance

A thinner phone could be easier to carry, but the closed thickness and total weight will matter much more than the thinnest unfolded measurement.

Touch ID or Face ID?

The leading rumor is that Apple will use Touch ID integrated into the power button instead of the current Face ID system. The usual explanation is that the thin bezels and display layers may not leave enough room for Apple’s existing TrueDepth camera hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is not confirmed. The final design could still use a smaller or relocated Face ID system, an under-display biometric system, side-mounted Touch ID, or a combination of methods. MacRumors and Macworld both identify Touch ID as the leading rumor rather than an established specification.

If Touch ID returns, the practical questions will include whether unlocking feels equally convenient when the phone is open or closed, how the sensor works for left- and right-handed users, and how wet fingers or gloves affect it. Apple Pay and third-party applications should continue to use Apple’s standard authentication interfaces, but the exact user experience cannot be known before launch.

What cameras might it have?

The common configuration: two rear cameras

The most repeated camera rumor describes:

  • A 48-megapixel main wide camera
  • A second 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, though some reports leave the second lens type less certain
  • One front-facing camera on the outer display
  • One front-facing camera on the inner display
  • No dedicated telephoto lens

A separate CMB International analyst report forecast four 48-megapixel cameras, including two rear cameras and separate front cameras for the inner and outer screens. That is an analyst forecast, not confirmation.

Accessory evidence is suggestive but limited

Recent accessory images reported by MacRumors appear to show two horizontally arranged rear lenses, a pill-shaped flash, and a possible LiDAR scanner. This conflicts with earlier reports that LiDAR and optical image stabilization might be omitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessory molds, camera protectors, dummy units, and CAD-based cases can reveal broad proportions and cutouts, but they cannot prove the final sensors, stabilization system, or camera features. The safest conclusion is that two rear cameras are more consistently rumored than a three-camera Pro Max-style system, while LiDAR and telephoto support remain unresolved.

This could become one of the product’s most important compromises. A hinge, two display assemblies, batteries in both halves, and a thin chassis may make it difficult to fit a large telephoto module, periscope optics, large sensors, LiDAR, and full stabilization hardware. If the foldable costs $2,000 or more but lacks the Pro Max’s zoom capability, buyers will have to decide whether the interior display is worth the camera trade-off.

Processor, modem, memory, and storage rumors

Component Rumored expectation Confidence Important qualification
Processor A20 Medium-low Mainly inferred from the expected 2026 launch timing; the exact chip is unconfirmed.
Modem Apple C2 Low-medium Repeated in reports, but not verified for this device.
Memory Approximately 12GB of RAM Low Appears in analyst and specification reports.
Storage Up to 1TB has been mentioned Low Do not assume 1TB will be the base configuration.

The A20 prediction is plausible only in the broad sense that a 2026 iPhone would be expected to use that generation of Apple silicon. The C2 modem, 12GB of RAM, and 1TB storage claims are less firmly supported. Apple has not published a specification sheet.

Memory supply could affect availability

On August 6, a report said Apple and its suppliers were racing to secure mobile DRAM. The report described roughly $1 billion worth of unpackaged processors waiting for memory chips and included the foldable iPhone among the products potentially affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This should not be described as a foldable-specific defect. It is a broader supply issue that could affect production volumes, launch inventory, or the timing of several Apple products. MacRumors’ coverage is the relevant source for that claim.

Battery expectations

One Weibo source suggested a battery capacity between 5,000mAh and 5,500mAh. Macworld also noted that iOS 27 beta references plural “batteries,” which could point to separate battery cells in the two halves of the device.

That is plausible for a book-style foldable, but neither the capacity nor the battery life is verified. There is no reliable information yet about wired charging speed, wireless charging, MagSafe support, charging behavior while folded or open, or battery-health management across multiple cells.

A high mAh figure would not automatically mean excellent endurance. The phone may need to power two displays, a much larger inner screen, more sensors for hinge position and device posture, heavier multitasking, more memory, and additional thermal-management hardware. Real battery life will depend on display efficiency, software behavior, and how often the inner screen is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What iOS 27 could do differently

The software may be more important than the hardware specification list. Apple’s iOS 27 developer beta reportedly contains these fold-related references:

  • foldState, which could identify whether the device is folded, open, or in another state
  • angleDegrees, representing the opening angle visible to software
  • mechanicalAngleDegrees, referring more directly to the hinge’s physical angle
  • A key for counting built-in displays

According to 9to5Mac and TechCrunch, the references appeared in both developer frameworks and beta code and were not present in iOS 26. That suggests Apple is building a platform-level foundation for foldable hardware rather than simply scaling up the iPhone interface.

Bloomberg’s reporting points to an iPad-like layout when the phone is opened, potentially including side-by-side apps. In practice, the open state could be used for:

  • Email beside a browser or document
  • Calendar beside messages
  • Video calls with additional controls or notes
  • Reading and research without constant app switching
  • Drag-and-drop workflows between compatible apps

Several questions remain unanswered:

  • Will opening the phone expand the current application automatically?
  • Will the inner display support genuine two-app multitasking or only larger layouts?
  • Will iPad applications run natively, or will the product remain fundamentally an iPhone?
  • Will Apple offer iPad-style windowing or Stage Manager?
  • What happens to applications that have not been optimized for the approximately 4:3 inner display?
  • Will Apple Pencil input be supported?
  • How will full-screen video handle the nearly square display?

The code supports fold-aware behavior. It does not prove any particular multitasking control, iPad application compatibility, stylus support, or window-management system.

When will it be announced and sold?

Announcement: September 2026 is the leading expectation

The strongest current expectation is a September 2026 unveiling alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. Supply-chain reports have cited September guidance, and Bloomberg-related reporting has placed the device in the 2026 iPhone cycle. MacRumors’ June 22 report summarizes the current September expectation.

That does not mean Apple has announced a keynote date. Until Apple publishes an event invitation or product announcement, September remains a forecast.

Availability could be later than the announcement

There are at least four separate dates to watch:

  1. Announcement: Apple shows the product and confirms its name and specifications.
  2. Preorders: Apple begins accepting orders, possibly after the event.
  3. First shipments: Early customers receive the phone.
  4. Broad availability: Supply becomes reliable across Apple’s online and retail channels.

Earlier reporting suggested that Apple could announce the foldable in September but ship it after the iPhone 18 Pro, potentially in October through December. A MacRumors report compared that possibility with the staggered launch of the iPhone X. Other reporting raised the possibility of a delay into 2027 if hinge or assembly problems persisted.

Later reports pushed back against a major delay. 9to5Mac reported a supply-chain claim that there would be no delay, and later coverage continued to describe production as moving toward a September debut. Even if the announcement stays on schedule, those reports do not eliminate limited inventory or a staggered regional release.

Best current timeline: expect a September 2026 announcement to be plausible, but treat the first sales date and initial supply as unresolved.

How much might it cost?

Most current reports place the starting price above $2,000. Some estimates reach approximately $2,399 to $2,500. These are predictions, not an Apple price. The final figure could vary depending on storage, region, taxes, and whether the quoted number refers to a base or higher-capacity model.

The price estimates would position the foldable as a luxury flagship above or alongside the iPhone Pro Max rather than as an ordinary iPhone replacement. At that level, buyers would reasonably expect premium cameras, strong durability, reliable battery life, high-quality materials, and long software support.

The meaningful comparison is not simply the cost of the foldable against another phone. Buyers may compare it with:

  • A high-end iPhone Pro Max plus an iPad mini
  • A Galaxy Z Fold-class Android phone
  • A conventional iPhone plus an iPad Air
  • An iPhone plus a MacBook Air for larger-screen productivity

It is too early to calculate savings from replacing two Apple devices. That depends on whether the foldable’s software, battery life, camera system, and app support are good enough to replace the separate tablet experience.

Other physical details rumored from accessories and dummy units

On August 9, accessory images reportedly pointed to silver and dark blue or indigo color options. This is weak-to-medium evidence because it comes from third-party accessory designs rather than an Apple filing or official product image. MacRumors reported on the accessory evidence.

Dummy units and cases have also been used to suggest:

  • Two rear camera lenses
  • A thin camera plateau
  • No obvious MagSafe ring
  • No obvious Action Button
  • No physical SIM slot

Those clues may indicate the broad shape Apple is testing, but they cannot establish final functionality. A case manufacturer may work from incomplete information, and dummy units can change before mass production. The presence or absence of MagSafe, an Action Button, a physical SIM tray, or LiDAR should remain unresolved until Apple provides official hardware details.

What could make the foldable iPhone compelling?

  • A large screen in a pocketable device: the inner display could make reading, browsing, email, documents, and video calls more comfortable than on a conventional iPhone.
  • Apple ecosystem integration: users could retain access to iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Watch, AirPods, iCloud, and Apple services in a foldable form factor.
  • Fold-aware software: iOS 27’s reported state and angle handling could make the transition between closed and open modes more consistent.
  • Potentially better platform consistency: Apple could provide a unified design system for app layouts, multitasking, and transitions, although that advantage remains an inference until the product is tested.
  • One-device convergence: some people could use it as both their phone and a small tablet, reducing what they carry.

That last point is a possibility, not a guaranteed benefit. If the inner display is excellent but the phone is heavy, fragile, expensive, or poorly supported by third-party apps, a separate iPhone and iPad may remain more practical.

The biggest compromises and unanswered questions

1. Cameras may not match the price

The most common camera rumors describe two rear cameras and no dedicated telephoto lens. That would make the foldable less versatile for zoom photography than an iPhone Pro Max, despite potentially costing more.

2. First-generation hinge risk

Apple must demonstrate that the hinge stays flat, aligned, quiet, and reliable over years—not merely that a demonstration unit opens and closes smoothly. The hinge and flexible display are likely to be among the most expensive components to repair, but Apple has not announced repair prices, warranty terms, or AppleCare treatment for this rumored product.

3. Weight and closed thickness

A thin unfolded profile does not guarantee a thin pocket profile. Two device halves, the hinge, camera hardware, and battery cells could make the closed phone noticeably thicker and heavier than a conventional iPhone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Battery life with two displays

Even a large dual-cell battery must power a larger interior screen and more complex software. The rumored 5,000- to 5,500mAh capacity cannot tell us how long the phone will last.

5. App compatibility

Apple can control iOS, but it cannot instantly optimize every third-party application. The value of a wide, approximately 4:3 display will depend on how developers support it.

6. Water and dust resistance

The dossier contains no verified information about an IP rating. Do not assume that the foldable will match the water and dust resistance of a conventional iPhone. The hinge and flexible display create additional sealing challenges.

7. Limited launch supply

Foldable OLED yields, hinge assembly, new-product introduction work, and the reported mobile-memory bottleneck could all affect availability. Some supply-chain estimates have circulated production targets as high as 10 million units, but that is an estimate—not an Apple commitment—and does not guarantee that customers will find the phone in stock.

More broadly, IDC has forecast strong growth for the foldable-smartphone market in 2026 and linked that growth partly to the expected arrival of Apple’s first foldable. That is market context, not evidence of Apple’s final specifications. See the IDC forecast.

Should you wait for Apple’s foldable iPhone?

The answer depends on what problem you are trying to solve:

If you value most… The sensible approach
Apple’s ecosystem and a large screen in one device Wait for official details if you can tolerate first-generation hardware risk and a potentially very high price.
A large foldable screen immediately Consider an existing Galaxy Z Fold-class or other Android foldable rather than waiting for an unannounced product.
Camera quality, durability, and lower cost A conventional iPhone Pro Max is likely to remain the safer choice.
Reading and occasional tablet use An iPhone paired with an iPad mini may offer better value and less repair risk.

Waiting is most logical for readers who specifically want an Apple foldable and are willing to pay an early-adopter premium. Buying now is more sensible if you need a dependable large-screen phone, the best available iPhone camera system, or predictable repair and availability policies.

Final assessment

Apple’s foldable iPhone looks increasingly likely to appear in 2026, but it is not official as of August 10, 2026. The evidence for an active project is now strong: supplier reports, display-production claims, high-authority reporting, and fold-related iOS 27 references all point in the same direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most credible hardware picture is a book-style foldable with an approximately 7.7- to 7.8-inch inner screen and a 5.3- to 5.5-inch outer screen. The software appears to be moving toward fold-aware behavior and an iPad-like open layout. The biggest unknowns are the hinge’s real-world durability, whether the crease is genuinely difficult to see, the final camera system, the biometric hardware, the price, and whether customers can buy the phone soon after its expected September unveiling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has Apple confirmed a foldable iPhone?

No. As of August 10, 2026, Apple’s Newsroom and iPhone archive do not list a foldable iPhone. Multiple reports and iOS 27 software references strongly suggest an active project, but they do not constitute an official product announcement.

What is Apple’s foldable iPhone expected to be called?

The most common rumored name is iPhone Ultra. iPhone Fold is also used as a descriptive placeholder. Apple has not confirmed either name.

When will Apple’s foldable iPhone be available?

September 2026 is the leading rumored announcement window, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. Sales could begin shortly afterward, later in the fall, or with limited inventory. No customer availability date has been announced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Apple’s foldable iPhone have a crease?

Reports claim Apple is targeting a visually near-crease-free display, but there is no independent long-term testing of the rumored screen. A completely invisible crease under all lighting and viewing angles should not be assumed.

Should I buy an existing foldable phone or wait?

Wait if you specifically want an Apple foldable and can accept first-generation risk and a likely price above $2,000. Buy an existing foldable if you need a large-screen phone now, or choose a conventional iPhone Pro Max if cameras, durability, and predictable availability matter more.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Apple’s first foldable iPhone probably is a real project and may be unveiled in September 2026, but it remains unannounced. Expect a book-style design, a roughly 7.7- to 7.8-inch inner display, fold-aware iOS 27 software, and a luxury price above $2,000. Treat the rumored Touch ID system, Liquid Metal hinge, camera layout, battery capacity, crease performance, colors, and sales date as unresolved until Apple publishes the specifications.
