Apple has not announced a foldable iPhone. As of August 9, 2026, the company’s official iPhone Newsroom page lists confirmed products such as the iPhone 17e, but no foldable model. Everything currently available about Apple’s first foldable phone comes from supply-chain reports, analysts, leakers and dummy units.

Those reports point to a premium book-style device with a roughly 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch internal screen. A fall 2026 announcement is widely expected, but the retail launch, name, price and specifications remain unconfirmed.

What is Apple’s 2026 foldable iPhone?

The rumored device is often called the iPhone Fold, but that is a media nickname rather than an official product name. More recent reports have suggested iPhone Ultra, reflecting the phone’s expected position above the Pro Max range and its potentially extreme price.

Apple has reportedly explored several foldable designs. The strongest rumor consensus now favors a book-style phone that opens like a small tablet, rather than a clamshell design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. Apple is said to have tested flip-style prototypes but moved away from that format because closing a normal-sized phone into a smaller square offered fewer compelling advantages.

  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

The product would therefore be closer in concept to a Galaxy Z Fold: a conventional-looking phone when closed and a much larger, nearly square screen when opened.

Rumored design and dimensions

Leaked dummy units reportedly show a short, wide device with a raised camera section on the rear. Dummy models are mainly produced for accessory development, so they can reveal the approximate shape and placement of major components. They cannot confirm the final materials, buttons, cameras or ports.

Rumored characteristic Current report Confidence
Fold type Book-style inward fold Relatively strong rumor consensus
Outer display Approximately 5.5 inches Unconfirmed
Inner display Approximately 7.8 inches Unconfirmed
Inner aspect ratio About 4:3 Unconfirmed
Open thickness Roughly 4.5 mm Unconfirmed
Rear cameras Two cameras Repeated supply-chain rumor
Frame Titanium or a titanium-based material Unconfirmed

An approximately 4:3 internal display would make the phone useful for reading, email, document editing and multitasking. It would also be a different shape from the tall, narrow screens used by current iPhones. The outer display is expected to be relatively compact, which could make one-handed use easier when the phone is closed.

Will the iPhone Fold have a crease-free display?

Probably not in the literal sense. Reports describe a greatly reduced, nearly invisible or class-leading crease, not a display guaranteed to have no visible fold line at all.

Apple is reportedly focusing on the hinge and flexible display construction to reduce the crease. Rumored hinge materials include:

  • Liquid metal
  • Titanium alloy
  • A combination of different metals
  • A possible 3D-printed structure

The liquid-metal claim has been repeated by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Chinese leakers, but other reports suggest Apple has continued evaluating alternatives. It is therefore more accurate to say that Apple may be testing a liquid-metal or similarly advanced hinge—not that the final phone will definitely use one.

There are also conflicting reports about production difficulty. One account claimed the hinge struggled during prolonged opening-and-closing tests against Apple’s durability standards. Another source disputed the idea that the hinge was the main manufacturing problem. Either way, hinge reliability is one of the most important unanswered questions for the product.

Bottom line on the crease: expect Apple to market improved crease resistance if the phone launches, but treat “completely crease-free” as an exaggeration until independent reviews examine a retail unit.

Touch ID could replace Face ID

Several reports claim the thin foldable chassis may not have enough internal space for the current TrueDepth camera system used by Face ID. The proposed alternative is a fingerprint sensor built into the side button, similar in principle to Touch ID on recent iPad Air and iPad mini models.

This would be a major change for the iPhone range, but it is not confirmed. Apple has not announced whether the foldable phone will use Touch ID, Face ID, both systems or another biometric arrangement. The reported 4.5 mm open thickness is the main reason analysts expect Apple to reconsider the usual Face ID hardware.

Cameras and internal hardware

The most consistent camera rumor points to two rear cameras rather than the three-camera arrangement found on Pro iPhones. Reports also suggest that the phone may not have a dedicated telephoto camera because the folded design leaves limited space for a large periscope lens and its moving components.

A two-camera system could mean a main camera and an ultrawide camera, although Apple has not confirmed the configuration. The rumored choice would prioritize the foldable form factor over matching every camera capability of an iPhone Pro Max.

  • Titanium frame and reinforced edges provide a premium, durable build, reducing weight compared to stainless steel while enhancing grip and making the phone easier to handle during long sessions of video recording, gaming, or editing.
  • Camera system designed for versatility and precision, including ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with improved low-light and macro capabilities, giving photographers and creators a broader range of expressive tools while maintaining sharp details across the frame.
  • Advanced Action button offers customizable shortcuts, allowing quick access to features like capturing photos, launching apps, controlling accessibility tools, or activating automation tasks without interrupting your workflow.
  • Audio and video performance optimized for creators, with spatial audio, improved microphones, and stabilized video recording, providing professional-quality sound and smooth footage whether recording content, streaming, or joining video calls.

Other reported hardware features include:

  • High-density battery cells
  • Two battery cells with a combined rated capacity of at least 4,883 mAh
  • Vapor-chamber cooling
  • A titanium-based frame
  • No physical SIM tray in some leaked-model interpretations

The 4,883 mAh figure comes from a leaker and should not be treated as the final capacity. Battery performance depends on display efficiency, processor power management, modem behavior and software, not capacity alone. Vapor-chamber cooling is also a supply-chain claim rather than a confirmed specification.

Software: will it run iPadOS?

Rumors suggest Apple is adapting iOS for the larger inner display. Possible features include two-app multitasking, iPad-like sidebars and new developer APIs for foldable layouts.

That does not mean the phone will run iPadOS. Current reports do not say that Apple plans to install iPadOS or provide unrestricted support for iPad applications. The more likely approach, if the product launches, is an iPhone version of iOS with additional interfaces for the unfolded screen.

For buyers, software support may matter more than the hardware dimensions. A 7.8-inch display is useful only if apps resize properly, support side-by-side work and preserve state when the phone is opened or closed. Apple’s developer documentation will be the first reliable indication of how broad that support is.

Expected price

There is no official price. Current estimates generally range from $1,800 to $2,500, with several reports placing the starting price around or above $2,000. That would make the foldable iPhone Apple’s most expensive iPhone by a considerable margin.

One speculative storage breakdown reported by MacRumors gives the following estimates:

  • Smartphone
Storage Reported estimate
256GB Approximately $2,320
512GB Approximately $2,610
1TB Approximately $2,900

These figures are not leaked Apple pricing. They may reflect analyst assumptions, regional pricing or an early configuration model that never reaches stores. The defensible expectation is simply that the device will sit in an ultra-premium price tier and could start above $2,000.

When will Apple launch it?

The leading target is fall 2026, potentially at Apple’s usual September iPhone event. However, an announcement date and a retail availability date may not be the same.

Reports have described trial production at Foxconn, followed by claims that mass production was delayed from June to early August. Later supply-chain reporting suggested production had begun ramping up. This indicates that the project may be beyond the early prototype stage, but it does not guarantee a finished product or a launch.

Possible launch scenarios include:

  1. Apple announces the phone and begins sales in September 2026.
  2. Apple announces it in September but releases it later because initial production is limited.
  3. The retail launch moves to October.
  4. Production problems push availability as late as December.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has compared the possible rollout to the iPhone X, which was unveiled in September but became available later because of constrained production. That type of staggered release would make sense for a first-generation foldable with a complex hinge and flexible display.

The most reliable way to separate reporting from fact is to use three categories:

Also popular on Amazon
Apple iPhone 16 Plus, 128GB, Pink - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
  • Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
  • Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
  • Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
  • Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
Category Examples
Officially confirmed Nothing about a foldable iPhone; Apple’s Newsroom has not announced one as of August 9, 2026
Strongly rumored Book-style design, roughly 5.5-inch outer screen, roughly 7.8-inch inner screen and a reduced crease
Highly speculative Exact price, final name, 4,883 mAh battery, liquid-metal hinge, Touch ID and exact launch day

Claims that Apple has “confirmed” an iPhone Fold, a zero-crease screen or a September retail launch are incorrect. Even supply-chain reports about trial or mass production cannot establish that Apple will ship a specific configuration on a specific date.

Should you wait for Apple’s foldable iPhone?

Wait if you want a large screen in a phone-sized device, already use Apple services and are comfortable paying an early-adopter premium. The rumored design could combine iPhone software with a compact tablet-style display in a way that appeals to people who do not want to carry an iPhone and iPad separately.

Do not wait based only on the current rumors if you need a phone soon, want a proven foldable hinge or expect Pro Max-level cameras at a normal flagship price. First-generation foldables can involve compromises in weight, durability, camera hardware, repair cost and app support. The first retail units—and Apple’s warranty and repair policies—will matter more than leaked dimensions.

FAQ

Has Apple officially announced the 2026 iPhone Fold?

No. As of August 9, 2026, Apple’s official iPhone Newsroom page does not list a foldable iPhone. The name, design, specifications, price and release date remain unconfirmed.

Will Apple’s foldable iPhone be completely crease-free?

That has not been established. Current reports point to a greatly reduced or nearly invisible crease, possibly enabled by a redesigned hinge and display construction. “Completely crease-free” is stronger than the available evidence supports.

How much could the foldable iPhone cost?

Current estimates range from about $1,800 to $2,500, with several reports suggesting a starting price around or above $2,000. Storage-specific estimates as high as $2,900 have also been reported, but none of these prices are official.

When might Apple release its first foldable iPhone?

Fall 2026 is the leading rumor, with a possible announcement in September. Apple could delay retail availability until October, December or later if production remains constrained.

The Bottom Line

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is widely rumored to be a book-style model with a 5.5-inch outer display, a 7.8-inch 4:3 inner screen and a much less noticeable crease than current foldables. Touch ID, two rear cameras, a titanium-based frame and iOS multitasking are all plausible but unconfirmed.

The biggest practical expectations are a price potentially above $2,000 and a fall 2026 announcement followed by limited or delayed availability. Until Apple publishes an announcement and specifications, “iPhone Fold,” “iPhone Ultra,” the crease-free claim and every quoted price should be treated as rumor rather than fact.
