The M5 MacBook Air launched on March 11, 2026, in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. It keeps the recent fanless aluminum design but adds Apple’s M5 chip, 512GB of starting storage, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, faster SSD technology, and support for more demanding external-display setups.
The 13-inch model starts at $1,099 in the United States, while the 15-inch model starts at $1,299. Both include 16GB of unified memory and 512GB SSD storage, but the entry-level 13-inch configuration has an 8-core GPU rather than the 10-core GPU used in every 15-inch configuration.
Apple M5 MacBook Air release date
Apple announced the M5 MacBook Air on March 3, 2026. Preorders opened on March 4 at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time, and both sizes reached Apple Stores and other retailers on March 11, 2026.
The 13-inch and 15-inch models launched at the same time. This is not a chassis redesign: the M5 Air retains the thin, flat aluminum enclosure and the same four-color lineup used by recent MacBook Air generations.

| 15-inch MacBook Air | $1,299 | $1,199 | 16GB | 512GB SSD | 10-core |
These are U.S. prices before sales tax and optional upgrades. Available memory configurations are 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB. Storage options are 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB.
The 13-inch Air can be configured with either an 8-core or 10-core GPU. The base $1,099 model uses the 8-core GPU, while the 10-core version is an upgrade. Apple lists the 15-inch Air with a 10-core GPU in every configuration.
M5 chip specifications
Both MacBook Air sizes use the same basic M5 processor:
- 10-core CPU with four performance cores and six efficiency cores
- Up to a 10-core GPU
- 16-core Neural Engine
- Neural Accelerators integrated into each GPU core
- Hardware-accelerated ray tracing
- 153GB/s memory bandwidth
- Hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, ProRes RAW, and AV1 decoding
Apple claims that the M5 Air delivers up to four times faster AI-task performance than the M4 MacBook Air and up to 9.5 times faster performance than the M1 MacBook Air. These are Apple test results, so they should not be treated as independent benchmark averages.
What changed from the M4 MacBook Air?
The most practical improvements are storage, wireless connectivity, and the processor rather than the exterior design.
- M5 processor: adds the newer CPU and GPU architecture, Neural Accelerators, and ray-tracing support.
- More base storage: the entry-level configuration now starts with a 512GB SSD, double the previous starting capacity.
- Faster SSD: Apple claims up to twice the previous generation’s read and write performance.
- Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6: provide newer wireless standards when paired with compatible networking equipment.
- Apple N1 chip: handles wireless networking features.
- Up to 4TB storage: gives users more room for media libraries, development tools, and local files.
- Longer claimed streaming runtime: Apple rates both sizes for up to 18 hours of video streaming.

Both models include a USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable and a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W maximum output. Fast charging requires a 70W-or-higher USB Power Delivery source, which is an optional configuration rather than the standard charger.
MagSafe frees both Thunderbolt ports during charging. That matters because the Air has only two USB-C ports, and both are on the same side of the laptop.
Ports and external-display support
Each M5 MacBook Air has:
- One MagSafe 3 charging port
- Two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports
- One 3.5mm headphone jack
The Thunderbolt ports support DisplayPort, USB 4, charging, and transfer speeds up to 40Gb/s. The Air can run the built-in display at full resolution while also supporting external screens in these configurations:
- Two external displays up to 6K at 60Hz
- Two external displays up to 4K at 144Hz
- One external display up to 8K at 60Hz
- One external display up to 5K at 120Hz
- One external display up to 4K at 240Hz
Apple also says two external displays can be connected through a single Thunderbolt port with the appropriate dock or adapter setup. Check the dock’s bandwidth and display-support specifications before buying; not every USB-C dock can drive two high-resolution monitors at the advertised refresh rates.
There is no built-in HDMI port, SD-card reader, or USB-A port. Photographers, presenters, and users with older USB accessories will need a USB-C adapter or dock.

Both models are available in Sky blue, Silver, Starlight, and Midnight. The 13-inch model is 0.6 pounds lighter, which is noticeable for commuting and frequent travel. The 15-inch model gives you a larger workspace but takes up more room in a bag and on a small desk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFanless cooling and sustained performance
The M5 MacBook Air is fanless, so it runs silently. That is useful in classrooms, offices, libraries, and recording environments. It also eliminates the fan noise that can distract during calls or audio work.
The trade-off appears during long, continuous workloads. Repeated video renders, extended 3D exports, large software builds, and sustained AI processing can heat the chassis and reduce performance compared with a MacBook Pro with active cooling. For browsing, office applications, programming, photo editing, and ordinary video editing, the silent design is generally an advantage. If your workload keeps all CPU or GPU cores busy for long periods, compare the Air with a cooled MacBook Pro instead.
macOS and Apple Intelligence
The M5 MacBook Air ships with macOS and supports Apple Intelligence features available for its installed macOS version, language, and region. Apple’s launch materials highlighted macOS Tahoe features including Live Translation, expanded Reminders categorization, Shortcuts actions using Apple Intelligence, the Phone app on Mac, Live Activities, iPhone Mirroring, and an Edge Light effect for video calls.

Feature availability can vary by language, region, and software version. Apple Intelligence support should therefore be checked against the specific macOS release and account region you use.
Which M5 MacBook Air should you buy?
- Choose the 13-inch base model if portability and price matter most. At $1,099, it is the least expensive option and still includes 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage.
- Choose the 13-inch model with the 10-core GPU if you need additional graphics capability but want the smallest Air. The 10-core GPU is not included in the entry configuration.
- Choose the 15-inch model if you want more workspace without carrying a MacBook Pro. It also includes the 10-core GPU and a stronger six-speaker system by default.
- Choose 24GB or 32GB of memory for large creative projects, virtual machines, software development, or local AI workloads. Memory cannot be casually added later, so choose based on the applications you expect to use over the laptop’s lifetime.
- Choose at least 1TB of storage if the Mac will hold photo libraries, video projects, games, or development environments. The 512GB entry option is more useful than last generation’s base storage, but it can still fill quickly.

The Bottom Line
The M5 MacBook Air is a specification refresh rather than a physical redesign. Its strongest improvements are the M5 processor, 512GB base storage, faster SSD technology, Wi‑Fi 7, and broader external-display support. The $1,099 13-inch model is the sensible choice for portability, while the $1,299 15-inch version suits users who value screen area, speakers, and a standard 10-core GPU.
Remember the limitations: the Air remains fanless, its internal display is 60Hz, it has only two USB-C ports, and fast charging requires a separately configured 70W-or-higher power source. For sustained professional rendering or 3D workloads, a MacBook Pro remains the better fit.
