The 11 Best eBook Reader Apps for iOS 2024 (iPhone and iPad) depend on where your books come from: Kindle is best for Amazon purchases, Apple Books for Apple users, Libby for public-library loans, Kobo Books for Kobo purchases, and PocketBook or specialist apps for personal EPUB and PDF files. Features and availability may have changed since 2024.

These apps are not interchangeable. A retailer app may be excellent at syncing purchased books but poor at opening files from another store. A library app may provide free access but only for the length of a loan. A specialist reader may offer better file management while lacking a bookstore, audiobook catalog, or dependable cloud sync.

Update note: This comparison preserves its 2024 framing. App availability, prices, supported iOS versions, interface labels, cloud features, and payment methods are volatile and should be checked against the linked App Store or vendor pages as of August 16–18, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Kindle is the practical choice for Amazon ebook purchases, Kindle Unlimited access, and readers who also use Kindle hardware.
  • Apple Books is the simplest option for people invested in iPhone, iPad, and Mac, with iCloud synchronization for reading data across Apple devices.
  • Libby is the strongest choice for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks from a participating public library, but loans expire and popular titles may have waits.
  • Google Play Books is unusually useful for personal EPUB and PDF uploads because Google documents an iPhone and iPad import workflow and cross-device access.
  • PocketBook Reader is the broad-format choice, advertising support for EPUB, PDF, comics, audiobooks, and DRM-protected EPUB/PDF files.
  • Marvin 3, KyBook 3, Yomu, and BookFusion are specialist options for personal files, but current availability, pricing, sync, and plan limits require verification.

How should you choose an iPhone or iPad ebook reader?

Choose the app that matches your book source before comparing fonts, themes, or page animations. A Kindle purchase normally belongs in Kindle, a Kobo purchase belongs in Kobo Books, and a public-library loan is normally managed through Libby or a library-supported delivery method.

What does “ebook reader app” actually mean?

An ebook reader app usually falls into one of three categories: a store-and-sync app, a library-borrowing app, or a personal-file reader. Treating all three categories as equivalent produces misleading rankings.

Store-and-sync apps

Apple Books, Kindle, Kobo Books, Google Play Books, and NOOK connect reading to a particular retailer or account. These apps generally make downloading, recovering purchases, syncing reading position, and finding highlights straightforward. The trade-off is ecosystem lock-in: a book purchased with one retailer’s DRM may not open in another retailer’s app.

Library-borrowing apps

Libby is primarily a library lending service rather than a general-purpose reader for files you already own. A valid card and a participating library are required. The library controls the collection, loan period, borrowing limits, holds, and available formats.

Personal-library apps

PocketBook Reader, KyBook 3, Yomu, Marvin 3, and BookFusion are more relevant when you have DRM-free EPUBs, PDFs, comics, textbooks, or other files obtained outside a major bookstore. These apps can offer more control, but importing files and maintaining synchronization may take more work.

Which ebook reader app is best for each type of reader?

Reader need Recommendation Decision reason
iPhone, iPad, and Mac household Apple Books Strong Apple-device integration and iCloud library data
Amazon customer or Kindle Unlimited reader Kindle Best access to Amazon books and Kindle hardware
Free legal ebooks and audiobooks Libby Library borrowing without buying each title
Kobo reader owner Kobo Books Synchronizes Kobo purchases and activity
Google customer with personal EPUB/PDF files Google Play Books Combines Google purchases with documented uploads
Many formats, PDFs, comics, and audio PocketBook Reader Broad format support and cloud options
Deep DRM-free library organization Marvin 3 or KyBook 3 Power-user customization and local-library control
Minimal EPUB reading Yomu Less store-centric and more focused
Personal library across platforms BookFusion Cloud-based storage and synchronization, subject to current plan limits

What are the 11 best ebook reader apps for iOS?

1. Apple Books — best default choice for Apple users

Apple Books is the best starting point for readers who use Apple devices and want the least complicated setup. The app handles Apple Books purchases, EPUB files, PDFs, and audiobooks in one familiar interface.

Apple’s current support documentation says reading position, bookmarks, notes, highlights, collections, and related book data can synchronize across Apple devices when the same Apple Account and appropriate iCloud settings are used. See Apple’s instructions for accessing Books on other Apple devices.

Apple Books is less attractive when your library is split among Amazon, Kobo, Google, and independent files. Apple Books is also not available in every country or region, and its cross-platform reach is weaker than Kindle, Kobo, or Google Play Books.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where books come from: Apple’s bookstore and personal EPUB/PDF files.
Sync: Apple devices through iCloud when configured correctly.
Offline: Downloaded books can be read offline, subject to account or content restrictions.
Best iPad use: Large-screen EPUB and PDF reading, with Apple’s native multitasking and accessibility environment.
Main drawback: Apple ecosystem lock-in and limited usefulness for books purchased elsewhere.

2. Amazon Kindle — best for Amazon purchases

Kindle is the right choice when most of your books come from Amazon, when you use Kindle Unlimited, or when you move between an iPhone, iPad, Kindle device, and other supported Kindle platforms. Kindle provides the expected reading tools—font controls, bookmarks, highlights, notes, navigation, and reading-position synchronization—inside Amazon’s ecosystem.

The Kindle iOS app is primarily a reading application. Readers may need to use Amazon’s website for purchases or subscriptions rather than expecting the full Kindle storefront inside the iPhone or iPad app. Kindle Unlimited access is also a subscription license, not ownership of every included book.

Amazon’s DRM is the central trade-off. A purchased Kindle ebook should not be assumed to open in Apple Books, Kobo Books, Marvin, or another independent reader. Personal-file delivery exists within Amazon’s controlled workflow, but Kindle is not as open or format-neutral as a specialist EPUB reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where books come from: Amazon’s Kindle store and Kindle-related services.
Sync: Kindle ecosystem, including supported apps and hardware.
Offline: Downloaded books can generally be read offline, with DRM or account authorization potentially affecting access.
Best iPad use: Amazon books on a larger screen and synchronized with Kindle hardware.
Main drawback: Amazon DRM and purchasing friction on iOS.

3. Libby — best for public-library borrowing

Libby is the strongest recommendation for readers who want to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from a participating public library. The app supports library discovery, holds, renewals where the library permits them, multiple library cards, and offline downloads.

Libby does not turn a loan into a permanent purchase. The loan remains subject to the library’s due date, even when the book has been downloaded to the iPhone or iPad. Selection, waitlists, loan periods, borrowing limits, and available formats vary by library and its licensing agreements.

Libby is therefore not a substitute for Kindle, Apple Books, or a personal EPUB manager. Libby is the correct tool when the reader’s priority is temporary library access, including library audiobooks, rather than owning a portable file.

Where books come from: Participating public libraries.
Sync: Library account and Libby activity, subject to the service’s current behavior.
Offline: Downloaded loans can be read or played offline until the loan expires.
Best iPad use: Reading library ebooks and listening to borrowed audiobooks on a larger display.
Main drawback: Availability and access are controlled by the library, not by the reader.

4. Kobo Books — best for Kobo purchases and Kobo devices

Kobo Books is the natural choice for readers who buy from Kobo.com or use a Kobo ereader. Kobo purchases and reading activity synchronize to the iOS app, and Kobo’s documentation discusses support for DRM-free EPUB files.

Kobo’s official Kobo Books app basics for iOS also makes an important limitation explicit: the iOS app does not support Amazon Kindle ebooks or audiobooks. A Kindle library therefore cannot simply be moved into Kobo Books because both apps display ebooks.

Some Kobo purchases are completed on Kobo.com rather than entirely inside the iOS app. Catalogs, currencies, promotions, audiobook availability, and Kobo Plus offerings vary by country, so readers should check their regional Kobo store.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where books come from: Kobo store, Kobo devices, and some DRM-free EPUB files.
Sync: Kobo purchases and reading activity within the Kobo ecosystem.
Offline: Downloaded Kobo books can be read offline, subject to DRM and account requirements.
Best iPad use: Kobo purchases when the reader also uses Kobo hardware.
Main drawback: Kobo cannot open Amazon Kindle books or audiobooks.

5. Google Play Books — best for Google purchases and uploaded files

Google Play Books is one of the most flexible mainstream choices for readers who want both a commercial bookstore and a cloud shelf for personal EPUB and PDF files. Google documents that uploaded EPUB and PDF files can be read on iPhone, iPad, and other devices signed in to the same Google Account.

To import a personal file on iPhone or iPad, open Files, locate the EPUB or PDF, tap the share or open command, choose Open with Play Books, and sign in to the Google Account used for the library. Google’s official upload instructions also document bookmarks, highlights, and notes for supported uploaded files.

Google’s iOS purchasing guidance directs users to follow a web link to complete some book purchases. That purchasing path is inconvenient, but it does not prevent the app from being a capable reader after the book reaches the account.

Google Play Books supports offline downloads on iPhone and iPad; the offline-reading instructions describe downloading a book from the Library. Google also warns that publisher-defined device limits can apply. Google describes typical limits of three to five devices for some content, while some textbooks have stricter rules; that is a Google-specific policy, not a universal ebook limit.

Where books come from: Google Play purchases and uploaded EPUB/PDF files.
Sync: Google Account access, including supported reading data for uploaded files.
Offline: Explicitly supported for downloaded ebooks; publisher restrictions may apply.
Best iPad use: Personal documents, novels, and Google purchases across devices.
Main drawback: Web checkout and account or publisher restrictions.

6. PocketBook Reader — best broad-format reader

PocketBook Reader is the strongest choice in this list for readers with mixed personal files, PDFs, comics, audiobooks, and supported DRM-protected EPUB or PDF content. Its App Store description advertises 19 formats, including EPUB, FB2, MOBI, PDF, DJVU, DOCX, RTF, TXT, HTML, CBR, and CBZ.

The same PocketBook Reader App Store listing advertises Adobe DRM-protected EPUB/PDF support, PocketBook Cloud synchronization, audiobook playback, text-to-speech, and connections involving services such as Dropbox and Google Books. The exact format list and capabilities should be rechecked because app features and supported iOS versions can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PocketBook’s format breadth does not guarantee perfect rendering. EPUB is normally comfortable because text reflows to the screen. A PDF remains a fixed document canvas unless the app’s PDF Reflow feature can successfully extract its text. Tables, columns, footnotes, formulas, scans, and complex layouts may become distorted during reflow.

Where books come from: Personal files, supported cloud services, and supported DRM sources.
Formats: Broad advertised support for ebooks, documents, comics, and audio.
Sync: PocketBook Cloud for supported books and reading data.
Offline: Downloaded files can be read offline; DRM authorization and cloud behavior vary.
Best iPad use: PDFs, comics, textbooks, and mixed-format collections.
Main drawback: More configuration and more format-specific rendering issues than a store app.

7. Barnes & Noble NOOK — best for existing NOOK customers

NOOK is worth installing when you already own Barnes & Noble ebooks or audiobooks. The app gives existing NOOK customers access to their library and the expected reading controls within the NOOK ecosystem.

  • Precise Cutouts: Full access to all controls and features(Cameras, Speaker, Ports and Touch ID) without removing the case. When your tablet is opened or closed, the magnetic strip automatically wakes or puts it to sleep. It protects and prolongs the life of your tablet

NOOK is less compelling for someone starting a new library from scratch, particularly outside the United States. Books purchased from Amazon, Kobo, Apple, or Google generally will not appear in NOOK, and current App Store availability, purchasing workflow, supported formats, and synchronization details should be verified from the current NOOK App Store listing and Barnes & Noble help center.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where books come from: Barnes & Noble and NOOK purchases.
Sync: NOOK account ecosystem; verify the exact data synchronized in the current version.
Offline: Downloaded NOOK content, subject to account and DRM rules.
Best iPad use: Existing NOOK libraries on a larger display.
Main drawback: Ecosystem lock-in and a smaller international footprint.

8. KyBook 3 — best for advanced personal-library control

KyBook 3 is aimed at advanced readers who want to organize multiple personal ebook formats and sources rather than browse a single retailer’s store. It is a candidate for local-library management, cloud imports, and a more configurable workflow than Apple Books or a retailer app.

KyBook 3 requires a particularly careful availability check. Confirm that the app is currently listed in the relevant App Store, supports the required iOS or iPadOS version, and still offers the cloud, import, annotation, and format features you need. Older reviews and screenshots should not be treated as evidence of current behavior. The KyBook 3 App Store page is the appropriate starting point.

KyBook 3 is not a workaround for retailer DRM. A file that is technically an EPUB may still be encrypted or tied to an account, and an independent reader may not be authorized to open it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Advanced management of personal files.
Use with: DRM-free or otherwise supported files and cloud sources.
Check before installing: Availability, update status, pricing, import methods, sync, and DRM support.
Main drawback: More uncertainty and setup than established store apps.

9. Yomu — best minimalist EPUB reader

Yomu is the specialist choice for readers who want a focused EPUB workflow with minimal store integration. Yomu makes more sense for personal EPUB files than for someone who needs Amazon, Kobo, NOOK, or public-library catalogs.

Before choosing Yomu, verify the current support for PDF, annotations, cloud synchronization, accessibility behavior, iPad multitasking, and audiobook playback. Also check whether the current version is free, paid, or includes in-app purchases on the Yomu App Store page. Those details are version- and region-sensitive.

Best for: Simple, EPUB-centered reading.
Use with: Personal files that are DRM-free or supported by the app.
Main drawback: It is not primarily a bookstore, library-borrowing service, or audiobook platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Marvin 3 — best power-user DRM-free EPUB reader

Marvin 3 is designed for readers who prioritize detailed organization, customization, and control over a personal DRM-free ebook collection. Marvin 3 is a better fit for a carefully managed EPUB library than for Kindle, Kobo, NOOK, or library DRM content.

Current compatibility and availability need verification before installation. Check the Marvin 3 App Store listing for iOS and iPadOS support, current purchase model, cloud services, OPDS catalogs, annotation handling, and import methods. A specialist app can be excellent for personal files while still being the wrong choice for an account-protected bookstore.

Best for: Power users with DRM-free EPUB collections.
Strength: Organization and reading customization.
Main drawback: It is not the first choice for retailer purchases, library loans, or audiobooks.

11. BookFusion — best cloud-based personal library

BookFusion is aimed at readers who want a personal ebook collection stored and synchronized in the cloud. It can be attractive when the same DRM-free EPUB or PDF collection needs to remain available across devices rather than stay inside one iPhone or iPad.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud convenience comes with trade-offs. Verify current storage allowances, supported formats, annotation features, platform coverage, subscription tiers, and privacy expectations at the BookFusion website and BookFusion App Store listing. DRM-protected retailer books may not be importable, and a recurring plan may be poor value for readers who want a one-time purchase.

Best for: A synchronized personal library.
Use with: DRM-free or otherwise supported EPUB/PDF files.
Main drawback: Current plan limits and cloud dependence must be weighed carefully.

Which iOS apps are best for EPUB files?

For ordinary reflowable EPUB files, Google Play Books is the easiest mainstream option when cloud uploads matter, while PocketBook Reader is the strongest broad-format option. Marvin 3, Yomu, and KyBook 3 are more focused choices for readers who want local-library control and customization. Apple Books is convenient for occasional EPUB imports inside an Apple household.

EPUB is not automatically DRM-free. An EPUB purchased from a retailer may be encrypted and account-protected. Check the rights and technical requirements of the source before assuming that the file can be opened in an independent reader.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which iOS apps are best for PDFs?

For PDFs, PocketBook Reader is the most relevant featured app because its listing advertises PDF support and PDF Reflow. Google Play Books is convenient for uploading and syncing ordinary PDFs, while Apple Books is suitable for straightforward Apple-device reading.

A PDF designed for paper, a textbook, a scanned document, or a two-column technical paper may be uncomfortable on an iPhone. Fixed-layout pages require zooming and panning. PDF Reflow can improve text-heavy documents, but reflow may damage tables, columns, footnotes, formulas, or scan layouts. Judge PDF support by the document type rather than by the presence of “PDF” in an app description.

Which apps are best for audiobooks?

Use the ecosystem that owns or lends the audiobook: Libby for library loans, Kobo for Kobo audiobooks, Google Play Books for Google Play audiobooks, and Apple Books for Apple purchases. PocketBook also advertises audiobook playback and audio-file support, while Kindle audiobook behavior depends on Amazon and Audible availability for the particular title.

Audiobook playback is not the same as text-to-speech. VoiceOver, system text-to-speech, and an app’s read-aloud feature do not provide the same experience as a professionally narrated audiobook. Google’s audiobook guidance also covers bookmarks, Wi-Fi-only downloads, accompanying PDFs for some audiobooks, and qualifications for AI-narrated titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can you buy books inside an iPhone or iPad reading app?

Sometimes, but the purchasing experience differs by ecosystem and region. Apple Books provides Apple’s bookstore experience, while Kindle, Kobo, NOOK, and Google Play Books may send readers to a website for some or all purchases.

Google’s official iOS guidance says users can select a book in the app and follow a link to complete the purchase on the web. Kobo similarly explains that ebooks and audiobooks can be purchased on Kobo.com and then synchronized to the iOS app. The absence of a full storefront inside an iOS app is therefore not necessarily a reading defect; it may reflect platform purchasing rules.

What file formats should you check?

Format What it is usually good for Important qualification
EPUB Reflowable novels and text-heavy ebooks May be DRM-free or encrypted; the extension alone proves neither
PDF Fixed layouts, textbooks, scans, and illustrated documents Often requires zooming on iPhone; reflow can damage complex layouts
CBR/CBZ Comic-book archives Support is concentrated in broad-format or specialist readers
MOBI/AZW/AZW3 Formats associated with Amazon’s ecosystem Do not assume every iOS reader can open them
DRM-protected EPUB/PDF Account-authorized retailer or library content Usually requires the originating account, approved app, or supported DRM system

PocketBook’s App Store listing is unusually specific about format support, including EPUB, PDF, FB2, MOBI, DJVU, DOCX, RTF, TXT, HTML, CBR, CBZ, Adobe DRM-protected EPUB/PDF, and cloud synchronization. Verify the exact current list before publication because app capabilities can change.

How do sync and offline reading differ?

“Sync” can mean only reading position. Before choosing an app, check separately whether it synchronizes reading position, highlights, notes, bookmarks, collections, reading statistics, audiobook position, and imported files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Books has documented synchronization for reading position, bookmarks, notes, highlights, collections, and related book data across Apple devices. Google Play Books documents access to uploaded EPUB/PDF files on devices signed in to the same account, along with bookmarks, notes, and highlights for supported uploads. Kobo synchronizes Kobo purchases and activity but is not a universal reader for Amazon content.

Offline reading also has conditions. A downloaded retailer book may still require account or DRM authorization. A downloaded Libby loan remains available only until the library’s due date. Google Play Books explicitly supports offline ebook downloads, but Google notes that publisher-defined device limits can vary; some content has typical limits of three to five devices and some textbooks have stricter restrictions.

How do DRM and lock-in affect your choice?

DRM can tie an ebook to an account, retailer, library, or approved application. A Kindle purchase generally belongs in Kindle-compatible software or hardware; a Kobo purchase belongs in Kobo’s ecosystem; and a library loan may be restricted to Libby or an approved delivery method.

DRM-free EPUB files are substantially easier to move between Apple Books, Google Play Books, PocketBook, Marvin, Yomu, KyBook, and other compatible readers. Do not assume that a file extension means portability, and do not remove DRM: doing so may violate a retailer’s terms, copyright law, or both depending on jurisdiction.

What reading features matter on iPhone and iPad?

Compare features that change the daily reading experience rather than relying on App Store star ratings. Useful checks include font selection, font size, line spacing, margins, justification, sepia and dark themes, continuous scrolling, page turning, chapter navigation, table of contents, search, dictionary, translation, highlights, notes, annotation export, reading statistics, shelves, tags, filters, and bookmarks.

  1. Open Settings.

What are the biggest mistakes in ebook-app comparisons?

  • Ranking incompatible products together: Kindle, Libby, Apple Books, and a local EPUB reader solve different access problems.
  • Using star ratings as compatibility tests: Ratings describe existing-user satisfaction, not whether an app opens your particular book.
  • Calling every app an EPUB reader: Store and lending apps may support EPUB-derived content without accepting arbitrary EPUB files.
  • Ignoring purchase friction: Some iOS apps require Safari or a retailer website for purchases.
  • Ignoring iPad use: Landscape layouts, large PDFs, multitasking, and keyboard navigation matter on iPad.
  • Confusing cloud sync with portability: A book can synchronize perfectly inside one ecosystem and still be difficult to export.
  • Using undated claims: App listings, prices, subscriptions, cloud integrations, and supported iOS versions can change.

Which app should you install?

Install Apple Books if your reading life is centered on Apple devices and Apple purchases. Install Kindle for Amazon books, Kindle Unlimited, or Kindle hardware. Install Libby when public-library borrowing is the priority. Choose Kobo Books for Kobo purchases and devices, and choose Google Play Books when Google purchases and uploaded EPUB/PDF files need to live together.

For a mixed personal collection, start with PocketBook Reader. For more specialized DRM-free EPUB organization, investigate Marvin 3 or KyBook 3 if the current listings show active compatibility. Choose Yomu for a focused EPUB workflow and BookFusion when cloud-based personal-library synchronization is worth its current plan cost.

There is no universal best iOS ebook reader. The decisive questions are where the books came from, whether the files are DRM-free, which devices must synchronize, whether audiobooks matter, and how much control you want over a personal library.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best ebook reader app for iPhone and iPad overall?

Apple Books is the best default for readers invested in iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while Kindle is better for Amazon customers, Libby for library borrowing, and PocketBook Reader for mixed personal files. No single app is best for every ebook source.

Can I read Kindle books in Apple Books or Kobo Books?

Generally, no. Kindle purchases are normally protected by Amazon’s ecosystem, and Kobo’s official iOS documentation says Kobo Books does not support Amazon Kindle ebooks or audiobooks.

What is the best app for reading EPUB and PDF files on iPhone?

Google Play Books is a convenient mainstream choice because it documents uploads of personal EPUB and PDF files, while PocketBook Reader is the stronger broad-format option. DRM-protected files may still require the originating account or approved app.

Can I read Libby books offline?

Yes, downloaded Libby loans can generally be read or listened to offline, but the loan still expires on the library’s due date. Library availability, holds, loan periods, and download behavior vary by library.

Do iOS ebook reader apps let you buy books inside the app?

Not always. Apple Books provides Apple’s bookstore experience, while Google Play Books and Kobo document web-based purchase or checkout flows for iPhone and iPad users. The exact experience depends on the app, country, and content.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Pick by source, not by star rating. Kindle is the Amazon choice, Apple Books is the Apple choice, Libby is the library choice, Kobo Books is the Kobo choice, Google Play Books is the upload-friendly mainstream choice, and PocketBook Reader is the broad-format personal-file choice. Specialist apps can be better for DRM-free collections, but their availability and features should be checked before committing.
