There is no single best meditation app for everyone. Headspace is the strongest structured starting point for beginners, Calm is the best fit for sleep and relaxation, Insight Timer offers the most flexible free library and timer, and Medito is the best choice if you want a genuinely free app with no account, ads, or subscription. Waking Up stands out for meditation theory, Balance for personalization, Happier Meditation for practical instruction, Healthy Minds Program for research-oriented training, Smiling Mind for families, and Breathwrk for guided breathwork rather than conventional meditation.

This 2026 comparison uses current U.S. prices where official listings provide them. Prices, trials, taxes, and renewal terms can vary by country, platform, account, promotion, and whether you subscribe through an app store or a website.

1. Headspace: best structured starting point

Choose Headspace if you are new to meditation and want to be told what to do next. Its main advantage is not simply the size of its catalog but the way its guided meditations, courses, and programs are organized into a relatively clear learning path.

Retrospec Sedona Meditation Cushion, Buckwheat Pillow, Meditation Pillow
  • NATURAL COMFORT & SUPPORT: Filled with sustainable buckwheat hulls, this meditation cushion elevates your practice by aligning your spine and hips - no more achy joints during those long sessions
  • CUSTOMIZE YOUR ZEN: Unzip the inner compartment to add or remove buckwheat hulls, creating the ideal firmness for your comfy chair experience - whether you're meditating or relaxing
  • ECO-FRIENDLY DESIGN: The 100% cotton cover keeps your workout space free from microplastics. Machine washable and built to last, it's as gentle on the planet as it is on your body
  • VERSATILE COMPANION: Double as physical therapy equipment or exercise support. The sturdy handle makes it easy to carry from home workouts to outdoor bench sessions
  • MINDFUL ENGINEERING: Expertly crafted to boost circulation and maintain proper posture, helping you stay focused on your practice instead of fidgeting for comfort on your yoga mat

The current App Store listing describes more than 500 guided meditations, courses, programs, sleep tools, and additional mental-health-related features. It also lists access to licensed therapists, mental-health coaches, and an AI companion called Ebb. Headspace supports Apple Health integration for meditation-session data. View the current listing

  • U.S. App Store price: $12.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
  • Trial: Headspace’s current official offer advertises a 14-day trial, although the exact offer can vary by platform and account.
  • Best feature: a polished, curriculum-like experience for building a regular habit.
  • Trade-off: its value depends on paying for the subscription after the trial or limited introductory access ends.

One easy-to-miss billing detail matters: if you subscribe before a free trial ends, the unused portion of that trial is forfeited. Check the renewal date and the platform handling the subscription before starting a trial.

Verdict: Headspace is the best default recommendation for a beginner who wants consistency, clear instruction, and a polished app rather than an enormous menu of unrelated sessions.

2. Calm: best for sleep and relaxation

Choose Calm if sleep content is as important to you as meditation. Calm is broader than a meditation app. Its catalog combines guided meditations with Sleep Stories, music, breathing exercises, soundscapes, multi-day programs, and recurring features such as Daily Calm, Daily Trip, Daily Jay, and Daily Move. View the current App Store listing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calm has a usable free tier, although much of the catalog is Premium. Free users can find timed meditations by opening Discover → Meditation → Less Guidance. The free selection also includes one breathing exercise, Day 1 of multi-day programs, the Sleep Story Blue Gold, and free background scenes. A padlock icon identifies Premium content. See Calm’s free-content guide

  • Trial: Calm offers a seven-day Premium trial for qualifying users and offers.
  • Price: Calm does not have one universal price. It says website, Apple App Store, and Google Play prices can differ, and pricing is localized.
  • Renewal warning: Calm updated its yearly pricing policy in February 2026 and says existing subscribers on legacy pricing may move to the current standard price at renewal. Read the pricing update

Verdict: Calm is the strongest choice for people who want to wind down, fall asleep, listen to stories, or use relaxing audio. It is less compelling than Headspace or Healthy Minds Program if your priority is a focused meditation curriculum.

3. Insight Timer: best free library and customizable timer

Choose Insight Timer if you want maximum choice without paying at the outset. Its free version includes thousands of guided meditations, music, ambient sounds, community groups, teacher-following tools, statistics, milestones, Apple Health Mindful Minutes integration, and a customizable meditation timer.

The free timer is unusually capable. It supports custom bell intervals, reminders, statistics, and offline use. You can use it for silent practice, timed breathing, or any technique that does not require a narrator. See the free timer instructions

MemberPlus adds courses, offline downloads for more content, the Advanced Player, and high-quality audio. Official U.S. pricing lists MemberPlus at $59.99 per year or $9.99 per month. Individual courses cannot currently be purchased separately; Insight Timer says courses are accessed through MemberPlus. See course-access information

The size of the catalog is both its strength and its weakness. Insight Timer contains many traditions and teacher styles, including Buddhist, Zen, Vipassana, Kundalini Yoga, Advaita Vedanta, Christian, atheist, and other communities. That breadth can be valuable, but the experience is not edited as consistently as a closed-library app. Beginners may need to experiment with teachers and read descriptions carefully.

For subscription management, current Insight Timer instructions identify these paths:

  • Android in the app: open the three-line menu ☰ → Membership.
  • Apple: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.
  • Google Play: Profile → Payments & Subscriptions → Subscriptions.

Verdict: Insight Timer is the best value for experienced meditators, people who want a silent timer, and anyone comfortable navigating a large, user-generated catalog. It is not the best choice if too many options make it difficult for you to begin.

  • Comfort and Support: The large, ergonomic design provides exceptional comfort and support for extended meditation sessions
  • Premium Velvet Cover: A soft, luxurious velvet cover enhances comfort and adds an elegant touch to your meditation space, making it a thoughtful Christmas gift for loved ones
  • Traditional Buckwheat Filling: Filled with natural buckwheat hulls for customizable firmness and stability, promoting proper posture
  • Versatile Use: Ideal for meditation, yoga, floor seating, or as a decorative piece in your living room or bedroom
  • Durability: High-quality materials ensure long-lasting use, with a removable cover for easy cleaning

4. Balance: best personalized meditation plans

Choose Balance if you want the app to recommend a session instead of browsing hundreds of options. Balance asks about your goals, mood, and preferences, then assembles guided meditations from its audio library.

Its main structure is built around 10-day Plans, with an Advanced Plan for experienced meditators. It also offers single meditations, sleep activities, immersive meditations using vibration and sound effects, ten meditation techniques, and Apple Health Mindful Minutes integration. View the current listing

  • U.S. App Store prices: $11.99 per month, $69.99 per year, or $399.99 for a lifetime option.
  • Trial: qualifying new users receive access to all meditations during the trial.
  • Important billing term: after the trial, the account converts to an annual subscription unless canceled at least 24 hours before renewal.
  • Eligibility limitation: a trial may not be offered to someone who previously had a Balance trial or subscription. See Balance’s trial terms

The $399.99 lifetime price is a substantial commitment, and the App Store displays other historical or promotional purchase entries. Treat the live checkout screen—not an old article—as the final price.

Verdict: Balance is a good middle ground between a rigid beginner course and a giant open catalog. It is especially suitable for people who prefer personalization and a recommended next step.

5. Waking Up: best for meditation plus theory

Choose Waking Up if you want to understand meditation, not only follow instructions. The app combines guided practice with theory sessions, philosophy, life courses, conversations, Q&As, sleep content, a customizable timer, and community features.

Its current introductory course is a 28-day program. The app also organizes content into Daily Meditations, Moments, Daily Quotes, Reflections, Sleep, and Meditation Timer sections. That makes Waking Up more intellectually demanding than a quick relaxation app, but also more useful for readers who want explanations and a durable practice framework. View the current listing

  • Website price: $129.99 per year or $19.99 per month.
  • U.S. App Store price: $149.99 per year or $19.99 per month; the App Store also lists family-yearly options.
  • Financial assistance: the website says subscriptions have a money-back guarantee and scholarships are available to people who cannot afford membership. Check the current offer

The difference between the website and App Store annual prices is a good reminder to compare the checkout channel before subscribing. Website and app-store subscriptions may also be managed separately.

Verdict: Waking Up is best for skeptical, philosophically curious, or serious users who want meditation instruction with context. It is less suitable when your only goal is a five-minute calm-down or a large collection of sleep stories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Happier Meditation: best practical, secular-feeling instruction

Choose Happier Meditation if you want straightforward mindfulness instruction that connects to everyday life. The app is currently named Happier Meditation and is identified in the App Store as formerly Ten Percent Happier. Calling it only Ten Percent Happier is now outdated, although the former name remains useful when searching for older references. View the current listing

The current listing describes more than 500 guided meditations, personalized plans, sleep and stress content, expert teachers, courses, vertical videos, and short-form content. In a 2025 product change, the Podcasts tab was renamed Shorts, with Practice In Action and Wisdom Clips collections.

  • Annual price: the U.S. App Store lists an Annual Membership at $99.99.
  • Monthly price: the store lists several monthly purchase entries, including $9.99 and $14.99. Because there are multiple monthly SKUs, do not rely on one universal monthly price without checking the live purchase screen.
  • Best fit: readers who want expert guidance that feels practical and relatable rather than heavily mystical.

Verdict: Happier Meditation is a strong choice for people who want to apply mindfulness to stress, relationships, work, and ordinary situations, with enough longer-form instruction to support a sustained practice.

7. Medito: best genuinely free meditation app

Choose Medito if you want meditation without a paywall, advertising, subscription, or signup. According to the nonprofit Medito Foundation, every meditation, course, sleep story, sound, breathing exercise, challenge, and timer feature is free. No account is required to begin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hihealer Premium Crescent Meditation Cushion, Buckwheat Yoga Bolster Pillow
  • ERGONOMIC DESIGN: Crescent-shaped meditation cushion provides optimal support for spine alignment and comfortable seated meditation practice
  • NATURAL FILLING: Premium buckwheat hull filling molds to your body shape while maintaining firmness and stability during extended sessions
  • VERSATILE USE: Perfect for meditation, yoga, mindfulness practices, or as a floor cushion for daily relaxation and stretching
  • SUPPORTIVE COMFORT: Traditional bolster design helps reduce pressure on knees and ankles while promoting proper posture
  • DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: High-quality materials ensure long-lasting performance and maintain shape through regular use

Medito is operated by the nonprofit Medito Foundation and is open source. That makes it one of the clearest recommendations for readers who reject recurring subscriptions or do not want to hand over an email address simply to try meditation. Read Medito’s access policy

The trade-off is the lack of an account-based service layer. Without an account, Medito cannot provide the same level of cross-device synchronization, social features, or personalized tracking as services built around profiles and memberships.

Verdict: Medito is the best no-cost option when free means more than a limited sample catalog. It gives you the full core experience without ads or a premium tier, although it may feel less socially connected and less personalized than subscription apps.

8. Healthy Minds Program: best free research-oriented program

Choose Healthy Minds Program if you want a systematic wellbeing curriculum rather than entertainment-style wellness content. The app is entirely free and offers up to 600 days of content. It is based on the Healthy Minds Framework and was created by Humin, formerly Healthy Minds Innovations, in connection with the Center for Healthy Minds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The program is available on iOS and Android, but registration is required before you begin. See the Healthy Minds Program

Its structured, research-oriented approach is a better match for users who want a progression through wellbeing skills than for users looking primarily for celebrity narration, sleep stories, or a large ambient-music catalog. It is free, but it is not an anonymous, instantly usable timer in the way Medito is.

Verdict: Healthy Minds Program is the strongest free recommendation for readers who value a coherent framework and long-term training over entertainment or variety.

9. Smiling Mind: best for families and children

Choose Smiling Mind if meditation is a household activity or you want mental-fitness content for children and teenagers. The nonprofit app remains free for individuals and families and includes more than 700 meditations, micro-lessons, and interactive practices for children, teens, and adults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smiling Mind is broader than a basic meditation timer. Its current content is organized around five mental-fitness skill areas:

  1. Live Mindfully
  2. Embrace Flexible Thinking
  3. Grow Connections
  4. Act Purposefully
  5. Recharge Your Body

Useful navigation labels include Explore, Collections, Pathways, Routine, and Fitness. You can search by keyword, filter for Kids, Teens, or Adults, and filter by content type. To schedule a session, select Add to Routine; inside a session, the sun icon can set a day and time. See Smiling Mind’s current navigation guide

There is one important access limitation: anonymous use is not supported. The product information statement says a valid email address is required to create an account. The same statement describes the app as preventive and not a treatment tool for moderate-to-severe mental-health concerns. Read the product information statement

Verdict: Smiling Mind is the best pick for families, educators, and adults who want meditation integrated with broader skills such as flexible thinking, relationships, purpose, and rest.

10. Breathwrk: best breathwork-focused alternative

Choose Breathwrk if you want guided breathing exercises more than conventional meditation. Breathwrk is primarily a breathing and performance app, so it belongs on this list as a meditation-adjacent alternative rather than a direct substitute for a contemplative practice library.

It offers more than 50 breathing exercises across calming, sleep, energizing, and performance categories, along with coach-led classes. Current features include customizable voice, sound, haptics, and duration, plus guided classes, habits, and a Me tab for achievements and records. View Breathwrk’s current features

  • Pro price: $9 per month or $4.08 per month when billed annually.
  • Trial: the website lists a seven-day free trial.
  • Peloton: Breathwrk says it is now part of Peloton and is included for Peloton All-Access, Guide, and App+ members. Peloton App One and Strength+ members must subscribe separately.
  • Support: contact the developer from Me → Settings → Contact Us. See Breathwrk’s FAQs

Verdict: Breathwrk is a better fit for short, guided physiological down-regulation or energizing exercises than for learning meditation techniques, contemplative theory, or silent practice.

Which meditation app should you choose?

Your priority Best first choice Why
I am a complete beginner Headspace Its structured programs reduce the problem of deciding what to do next.
I want help sleeping Calm It has Sleep Stories, music, soundscapes, breathing, and sleep-focused content alongside meditation.
I want the most free content Insight Timer The free library and timer are unusually broad and customizable, though the catalog requires more filtering.
I want everything free and no account Medito It has no premium tier, ads, subscription, or account requirement.
I want a research-oriented course Healthy Minds Program Its free program is based on the Healthy Minds Framework and can extend to 600 days of content.
I want the app to personalize my plan Balance It uses your goals, mood, and preferences to assemble sessions and 10-day Plans.
I want meditation explained in depth Waking Up It combines practice with theory, philosophy, Q&As, and a 28-day introductory course.
I prefer practical, relatable instruction Happier Meditation Its teaching style emphasizes real-life mindfulness and expert-led instruction.

I want breathing exercises Breathwrk Its core experience is guided breathwork across calming, sleep, energy, and performance categories.

Free versus paid: what the labels really mean

These apps use several different definitions of free:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fully free and no account: Medito says its entire offering is free and does not require registration.
  • Fully free but account required: Healthy Minds Program requires registration, and Smiling Mind requires an account created with a valid email address.
  • Free core with optional membership: Insight Timer provides its main library and timer for free, while MemberPlus adds courses, offline downloads, advanced playback, and high-quality audio.
  • Free sample or limited tier: Calm provides selected meditations, a breathing exercise, Day 1 of programs, a Sleep Story, and background scenes, while much of the catalog remains locked.
  • Trial-based access: Headspace, Calm, Balance, and Breathwrk advertise trials or trial offers, but eligibility and renewal terms matter.

If avoiding an unexpected charge is important, do not stop at the words free trial. Read the price shown on the final checkout screen, identify whether the subscription is through Apple, Google, or the developer’s website, and set a reminder before the stated cancellation deadline. For Balance, the documented deadline is at least 24 hours before renewal. For other services, use the terms shown for your specific offer.

What to check before installing

  1. Decide whether you want instruction or choice. Headspace, Balance, and Healthy Minds Program guide you through a clearer progression. Insight Timer gives you more choice but also more responsibility for selecting teachers and styles.
  2. Separate meditation from sleep audio and breathwork. Calm is strongest when sleep and relaxation matter. Breathwrk is strongest when the desired activity is timed breathing. Neither should be judged by the same standard as a theory-led meditation course.
  3. Check account requirements. Medito does not require an account. Healthy Minds Program requires registration, and Smiling Mind requires a valid email address. Account-free access is useful for quick testing but usually means less synchronization and personalization.
  4. Compare the purchase channel. Waking Up currently shows different annual prices on its website and U.S. App Store. Calm also says its web and app-store prices may differ. Always check the channel through which you plan to subscribe.
  5. Look beyond the headline price. Balance displays annual, monthly, lifetime, historical, and promotional purchase entries. Happier Meditation displays multiple monthly SKUs. The visible checkout offer is more reliable than an old comparison page.
  6. Choose a style you will actually use. A huge free library is not automatically better than a short course. If browsing causes you to skip practice, use Headspace or Balance. If repetition bores you, try Insight Timer. If explanations motivate you, try Waking Up or Healthy Minds Program.

Are meditation apps medical treatment?

No blanket claim that these apps treat anxiety, depression, insomnia, or other disorders is justified by this comparison. They are wellbeing and practice tools with different content models. Smiling Mind explicitly describes its app as preventive and not as a treatment tool for moderate-to-severe mental-health concerns. If you are looking for help with a diagnosed condition or serious symptoms, evaluate an app separately from professional care rather than treating a subscription as a replacement for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which meditation app is completely free and does not require an account?

Medito is the clearest match. The Medito Foundation says every meditation, course, sleep story, sound, breathing exercise, challenge, and timer feature is free, with no premium tier, advertising, subscription, or account requirement.

Which meditation app is best for sleep?

Calm is the strongest sleep-first choice because it combines meditation with Sleep Stories, music, soundscapes, breathing exercises, and other sleep content. Its pricing and Premium availability vary by region and purchase channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Insight Timer really free?

Its core library and customizable timer are free, but it is not entirely free in the broadest sense. MemberPlus adds courses, offline downloads, advanced playback, and high-quality audio for a listed U.S. price of $59.99 per year or $9.99 per month.

Is Ten Percent Happier still the app’s name?

The current App Store name is Happier Meditation, formerly Ten Percent Happier. Use Happier Meditation when looking for the current app, while the former name explains older reviews and references.

Is Breathwrk a meditation app?

Breathwrk is better described as a breathwork app. It offers guided breathing exercises and classes for calming, sleep, energy, and performance, making it a useful adjacent option rather than a conventional meditation library.

The Bottom Line

For most beginners, start with Headspace. Choose Calm when sleep is the priority, Insight Timer when you want a large free library and a powerful timer, or Medito when you want a fully free experience without an account. Balance is the best personalization pick, Waking Up is the best theory-led option, Happier Meditation is the most practical-feeling choice, Healthy Minds Program is the strongest free structured curriculum, Smiling Mind is best for families, and Breathwrk is the right pick when breathing exercises—not meditation—are the real goal.
